    What a gorgeous yarn bowl. How wonderful that your friend took into consideration the center of mass that helps keep the bowl steady.

    I completely know what you mean about older knitters not taking us seriously. More than once I've decided not go back to a shop because I felt like they didn't treat me like a worthy customer. I'm not sure if they think it's because I can't afford much because I'm young or if it's something else. But the shops that cater to a broader, more modern audience just feel so different. It's just wonderful to actually have someone talk to you and try to figure out if there's anything they can help you with or what you enjoy etc.

    Understand about the conference brain, this weekend went to National Alpaca show and saw sooo much luscious fiber, left with raw fleece to work in felting slippers and try drop spinning. I gathered cards and 2 days later have no idea who was whom. I think older knitters like me are intimidated by the mastery of so many stitches and techniques that were so confusing in writing pre internet. I have learned so much while watching all the videos while enforced rest now. When I started knitting at 6yrs, no other kids were knitting, at 13 I was teaching knitting and the only adult knitter I knew was picking knitter who wasn't friendly. So many people I have taught basics to, just this winter met group of fiberworkers that could have friendships with. You are lucky to have knitting community.

    • @dunkelgrun1425
      @dunkelgrun1425  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh Cheryl, I absolutely understand you. I am fascinated by your generation who was knitting before the digital age. We all would probably not have learned so many stitches and techniques in such a short time if we wouldn't have the internet. I remember how my Mum tried to learn stitches from books sometimes when I was a kid and how frustrating it was for her sometimes, if the explanations didn't make sense. Now we just search a video, or we ask in a ravelry thread and the information is somewhere out there. It is so nice that you are passing your knowledge on to new knitters! And hey, you are a part of this knitting community too!

      I, too, am an "older" knitter, I learned when I was seven when we were living in France (I'm American and my father was military). We had a French cook who taught me to knit by "letting" me watch her; she didn't speak English and I was a shy little girl who knew very little french but knitting seemed to be our common language (that was 50+ years ago). I tried teaching my two daughters to knit, one took to it mainly because of a knitting website BUT I DID teach my then 10 year ( now 12) granddaughter to knit. don't know that she's stuck with it, but it does show I can teach it ;-)
      But I initially want to thank you, Anna, for taking us to the EYF!! Oh how I'd love to go and taking my knitting daughter with me!! I've been to Scotland once and once is definitely NOT enough!! Thank you for telling and showing us about it, that was so very lovely

    Sounds like a fabulous time! I too get overwhelmed at festivals and forget what I want to look for, so I always make a detail list of vendors to checkout, as well as the amounts and colors of wool I want.

    Another lovely episode! Enjoyed hearing about your EYF stories :) I have to say, I know exactly the feeling you describe about being judged based on age while yarn shopping. I am 32 and I've felt that too, although some times I wonder if it's real or perceived; as I tend to always feel like i'm being judged in public or that I don't belong anywhere- it's the anxious introvert in me. Any how, take care, Anna

    • @dunkelgrun1425
      @dunkelgrun1425  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Melissa! The "anxious introvert" feeling and thinking people will judge me is certainly something I do to. I think most older knitters actually get absolutely delighted when they find someone our age who is that much into knitting, and it might be also our task to show them (because their assumption that most young people don't care about the craft is not so wrong). Anyways, the beauty of the knitting community is that people of all ages and backgrounds are connected by their love for wool and knitting :)

    Anna, thanks for sharing your EYF story. It was my dream to go but I just had a baby 3 months ago so it wasn't practical but I was SO wishing for it. So your account helped me feel a little bit of that joy for myself. I completely relate to your story of it not feeling real until you stood there with your own ravelry pin. That is how I feel..hoping one day I can join. Wanted to ask you what is your recommendation for sourcing undyed yarn..a merino blend perhaps or whatever you love) for dyeing? Love to see all your hand dyed work!!

      Hi Ruth! I am happy to hear you could feel a little bit of the EYF joy as well. I hope you can make it to a fiber festival near you soon. I know how it is to look at all the pictures and videos and not being able to go. But one day you will! All the best to you and your little baby!

    • @borigitana
      @borigitana 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      dunkelgrün Hi Anna, can you tell me where you get your undyed yarn that is eco treated for dyeing? Is it local or do you order online? Really inspired by your hand dyeing!!

    • @dunkelgrun1425
      @dunkelgrun1425  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I forgot to answer that. Yes I get it locally, and unfortunately I don’t know a place outside of Switzerland who sells something similar. But I’m always keeping my eyes open 😉 if you would like some just for your own use, I could get some undyed skeins and send them to you!

    Anna! I know what you mean about going into a knitting shop and not being taken seriously. One time a woman just led me directly to the big chunky bright colored stuff without listening to what I was looking for. She kept saying that's what all the young people like to buy! I was like are you serious! She didn't even ask what I was shopping for. So frustrating. I have avoided these situations by always making sure I wear something intricate or impressive haha

    • @dunkelgrun1425
      @dunkelgrun1425  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha I love the idea of wearing something intricate or impressive! Once I bought some basic sock yarn as a contrasting color in a LYS here in Zurich and the lady asked me "Do you have the needles?"... hmmm 😆 I am sure she meant it in a kind way, but it felt like she thought I had no idea about knitting.

    -Love the woodwork, so much more elegant than a simple dowel. sigh. Watched you while finishing knitting seedstitch scarf in my first handspun 2 ply yarn. alas, it was more uneven than you do so 4oz fiber really made more of a collar.sigh. So many years of using commercial yarn in wild abandon is nothing like using homespun is it. deeper sigh.

    Have never been to a knitting/crochet yarn confernce, though had been to handweaving one (with lots of yarns and tools). Thank you for showing info and people and yarns! Have been experimenting again with natural dyes on yarns and fabrics and reading about fermenting dying (ancient techniques - Kirsta Vajanto-paper on ironage dying in Finland (mentions fiber stronger after this method! ) there is a a FB group also. www.exoriente.de/cms/faerberei.html?&L=3 , Mentions fermenting the fiber so it will recieve the dye better and be less feltable ( nature made "superwash" ). Still trying to figure the steps /materials to use.

    Lovely to see you enjoyed your trip. Could you dye the white John Arbon yarn with tea to darken it a bit without having to purchase more? Just wondering...

    • @dunkelgrun1425
      @dunkelgrun1425  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Yes my first thought was also to dye it. But then I realized I had a very specific shade of light beige in mind and without doing some tests it would be unlikely to achieve that. And the yarn is non-superwash and very fuzzy... so I couldn’t use a different yarn as a substitute. That’s why I went with the order of an additional skein. And it arrived already and it’s perfect! John Arbon is great 😁
