they actually explained in ep 9(i guess) that Hanami, Jogo, Dagon and Mahito are curses created from humanity's collective fear of natural disasters. Hanami is from the fear of the forest, Jugo - fear of earth, Dagon - fear of the oceans, and Mahito - fear of humans.
