We had a nice sized paper wasp nest on our house. Convinced my mom to not kill them if I knocked it down instead. Due to the fear it took me 3 attempts (one each night) to knock it down successfully. The next morning I go out and we see them all huddled together. Later in the day we see them buzzing and rebuilding their nest. After some research on their behaviors and short lifespan, my mom regrets having me knock it down and we're both rooting for the wasps to successfully rebuild. Feel bad that all the larva got taken by the ants. It was a full nest. Hoping they make a comeback because they didn't bother us at all.
I looked this up because I've got a bunch of nests on the side of my house and I know my wife is going to want me to kill them. My neighbors texted me about them too. I like to let creatures live so I'm hoping I can use stuff like this to convince them to let me keep them up.
This guy's touching a paper wasp like no big deal while I just had one in my house and now every little sound I hear I think there are more coming for me.
I hate that sound of those wasp😂. One time a wasp wing flew by my face and i got scared and i almost land into a 3 inch tall fire ant pile. Its like a double team karma.
I actually tried an experiment with wasps when I was a kid. Normally, if a wasp from a different nest tries to land on some other wasp nest the wasps there will know it doesn't belong and will attack. So, I put about three nests together that had some capped cells on the outside windowsill and waited to see if the hatching workers of each nest would all get along since it was like one continuous nest. Never got any results because my mother would spray the nests at night to kill off any ones that hatched each day. Wasn't until years later she told me what she did. Maybe someone else who has an interest in wasps can try the experiment to see if they get along as new adults.
Wow, that is actually a very interesting experiment. Too bad it was tampered with. I am pretty sure the babies with merge with whatever population they are born into.
Part of that fear might be from the unknown power of the sting of various species. There are a few species that look pretty intimidating to me, and that adds to the tension
Unless you get stung on your finger or toe, it won’t be a crippling pain. You will most likely grasp the area due to throbbing/sharp/painful sensations, but a Red Wasp isn’t as painful as it is itchy. You will scratch the blood out of yourself over the next two weeks, because wherever you get stung, you won’t stop itching.
A bee landed on my hand and I didn't notice until halfway at the end of my bus trip. The best part was when she was chilling on my finger until the trip finished. After that I put her on the bench.
Thanks Mike. So much tends to be out of my control, I hate being scared of something, but at the same time, I love the thrill when it's something I can have an affect on overcoming
We have a bunch of western paper wasps at my apartment, and they are super chill. Yesterday morning, I stepped outside for some fresh air, and there was a wasp laying awkwardly on the ground. I guess it was cold, because it crawled right onto my finger and hung out for a bit. When I tried to send it on its way, it came right back and clung to the front of my shirt. No fear, no agitation, just a neighbor in need of a pick-me-up. Nature is so fascinating...
I have soft spot for this little lady building her nest right outside my window. I watch her sleep and tend to her nest every single day. I just saw her leave for the first time a few minutes ago. She’s probably going to get more supplies to finish her nest. ❤️
I'm not going to lie... I'm terrified of wasps. I give you credit for being able to be so calm around them. I try hard not to let them freak me out... but I can't ever seem to get past my phobia. I'll keep trying... maybe someday ! Thanks for the video Chris.
Thank you Joe! It would be awesome if we get to do some exploring in the woods someday. Perhaps we could safely work on that phobia (not to say that I blame you, though)
@@jpenadelaify Where I live, the red paper wasps are very docile. They are the ones I hold and feed. I've hand-fed red paper wasps that had never seen me before. My only fear of wasps now, is having them land on me anywhere except my hand or forearm, where I can see them. I don't want to think I have a mosquito on my back and slap it, only to get stung.
I rember being stung by these things multiple times as a kid at my cousins pool. No real provocation I can think of. I remember one landing on my little sister's back. I didn't want to alert her. I was afraid she would freak out, and it would sting her. It stung her anyway, and flew off. She was standing still just talking. These things are just demons.
I love wasps too, but at the same time, I am deathly afraid of them. When I was younger I used to catch them in my yard, but stopped doing so out of fear. Great video!
I always have paper wasps hanging around my house in the summer and they have never done anything to bother me. The love checking out the plants in my garden, they are not aggressive at all
Sorry I love nature but this just isn't true various species of paper wasps are highly aggressive some more than others. We have muddobbers here where I live and they are super nice and never harm anything, but we also have yellow jackets that will literally attack anything that moves within a certain radius of their nest during late summer.
@@jamesu3816 Yellow jackets are vicious. Normal wasps normally won`t bother anyone unless you mess with their nest but some colonies are more aggressive than others when under stress. Yellow jackets act like killer bees if you accidentally disturb their nest and can quickly sting a person dozens of times. Messing around in August on up until the weather finally turns cold here in Louisiana is a gamble. I`ve even seen nests built in certain places that receive morning sun remain active all Winter here. If the paper wasps aren`t being mean I allow them to live on my property because they actively hunt pests in my garden like cabbage worms.
Wasps are amazing! Just bought a house and had a huge community of paper wasps living in a vine at my previous rental that the owners were going to kill, so I took some of them with me to my new house and now they are already building a new nest!
Love this video.....we have a paper wasp nest on top of our stove vent flap near the garage. The flap rises out with use and the wasps just pay it no nevermind! I was sitting outside with a cuppa and earlier this summer they flew around me, unnerving me a little, but I decided to wait it out, not being allergic. One landed on my hand with my buttered toast in it, I just watched. She/he walked up my hand to my toast, appeared to "taste" it with antennae, turned around, peered at my face, and flew off. Ever since then, I'm not afraid anymore. I stay away from their nest (but I do use my stove vent daily) and they seem to accept me. Plus, I'm the PEZ dispenser for water since I refill a water container with a rock in it every day for them to drink out of. I've finally become zen with the paper wasps here in the Northern Colorado mountains, I guess.
Cool story, I like it. It is neat that one moment can have such an affect on our relationship with something. These are cool insects and, like you, I am more cautious around their nest that the individuals. Cool insects.
I have three nests on my porch right now. They’ve been there for years and I go out there all the time. As long as you don’t mess with them, they don’t care about you. I love watching them feed and take care of their babies and come flying in all haywire with a load of pulp or mud. I was real sad yesterday when one was born sick or almost still. It died. Still have it on the table here ☹️
My workplace is surrounded by paper wasps and I’m terrified. I’m scared it will come up to me and not leave me alone and will sting me continually. I live in a foreign country so there’s a language barrier if I need medical help. I’m searching these kinds of videos to calm myself down
I am sorry, Abigail. I am sure if you don't harass them or anything, you should be fine. I am close to them all the time and I don't have any problems with them. Also, if you were stung and left the area, it isn't like they would all follow you. Are you allergic?
When I was in junior high a average size hornet/wasp was just flying around. It flew and faced me at eye level and slowly approached, I flinched back and it flew back and flew away in a whimsical, apologetic manner.
I was rebuilding a deck in the summer time, i reached under it and right into the nest! My whole arm filled with fluid, stayed that way for a week. I can honestly say the pain was worse than appendicitis.
I've always loved wasps, but I was always told that they were like 10x as agressive as bees. (Not to mention how many memes I've seen like bees=good, wasps=bad lol) it wasn't until recently when I started learning about how misunderstood most spiders were that I thought, "hey maybe wasps are misunderstood too" cool video dude!
I love your thinking. I completely agree! Thanks so much for your compliment. And yeah, wasps are one of my most favorites of the animal kingdom. So cool and often....cute.
I genuinely cannot figure out where the angry wasps meme came from. Only thing I can think of is maybe because wasps are worse at flying so they bump into people and then get swatted? And of course the person assumes it attacked them when it stings in response to the swat
@@catpoke9557 I know im a year late but that's why i was terrified of bumble bees when I was a kid. They would just stumble right into me and I thought I was under attack. It's ironic to me because bumble bees are probably the most peaceful bee out there.
I find it amusing that I’ve been stung by bees 8 times in my entire life but never once by a wasp. I didn’t give the bees any reason to sting me whatsoever, one instance I was in my pool and one flew straight at my face and stung me above my eye.
Yeah, even though most feel wasps are blood thirsty. Bees must have somehow felt threatened about something. The only times anything has ever stung me has been accidentally stepping on them (or their home!) bare foot, or mistaking them for a leaf in my shirt and yeah....accidentally laying upon various species.
I hadn’t been stung for 25 years, I was just a toddler and stepped on a bee. Then within a year I got hit with 3 paper wasps. one was in a towel I was taking to the washing machine and it got my palm. The second I stepped on early in the morning and it got my arch. The third, I was without shirt in the garden near some rose bushes and got hit mid back. Yesterday I was riding my bike and got stung by a bumble bee. I know one thing- that bumble bee doesn’t have shit on a paper wasp. It literally feels like a white hot needle jammed into your soul, and then it itches like all hell for two weeks.
no thanks I was walking inside my house when I felt three painful stabs on my shoulder . Turn around and behind me are about 5 angry red wasps. I DIDNT DO ANYTHING but mind my damn business and these dudes come after me like wtf. Peaceful my ass.
@@chrisegnoto One of them got trapped in the house and was angry. Decided to take it out on me in my room. Stung my armpit when I was changing, which hit the nerve. Arm locked up, so it stung me again. Lol I don't kill wasps, but i always keep an eye on em now.
I had yellow paper wasps make a small nest outside my window so I got a really nice view of them from a safe place! They never acted aggressive towards me even when I pressed my face against the glass to watch them. I think they grew up seeing me so they knew I wasn't a threat. I even went around outside "EXPOSED" to their nest and they never attempted to attack me.
Hey! Thanks for the video! We have a wasp nest in a broken solar lamp on our patio. I’ve successfully identified them as guinea wasps. They don’t seem bothered with me trying to peek inside the crack of the lamp and don’t bother us when they go foraging. I’m stuck with a decision of trying to get rid of them or just leaving them be. For now I’m just enjoying getting to watch them and I’m trying to learn all I can!
I use to have an issue with jellow jackets until paper wasps made a nest on part of the roof. The yellow jackets fucked off as the paper wasps would constantly harass them when getting close to their nests and attack them. Now I can sit outside in peace.
I love bees and wasps too, always had a connection with them since I was little. I thought I was special because they don't sting me, and also only ever got stung once. It was in my drink, and I didn't know until it stung me to get out. I tend to call wasps 'fairies' because they remind me of them.
I like that name. And yeah, right there with you on that. Very cool insects. As for that sting, was it on your lip, or in your mouth? Sounds very painful either way!
@@chrisegnoto It was on my lip, and wasn't that bad. I was/am also sensitive to pain, and that was before I started trying to increase my pain tolerance. I don't think it was trying, and wouldn't be surprised if it was actually a bite.
Glad you love them enough to post these videos cuz I'm using them to desensitize my friend's vespiphobia. It's been a long few years but we made a lot of progress, he no longer enters a blind panic and is capable of killing wasps on his own. Maybe sooner or later he'll be able to get one to land on him without freaking out and learn their body language so he'll know they aren't completely aggressive.
And who knows, he does have a habit of catching and releasing spiders and centipedes to the annoyance of his family so once his phobia is worn down enough he'll extend that courtesy to wasps with even a drop of sweetened water.
I have a wasp nest in my side view mirror I admire it from a closed window, but I think it's so awesome because sometimes ill drive out of town to go somewhere and the wasps come with me still thriving
some paper wasps (i think) have made a home in my window out of an old very small one-wasp nest that’s been there forever. i was going to get rid of them but they’ve grown on me. every day i see them and i think how cute they are and how they’re doing so good building their lil home. very cute edit: as i’m watching this i’m realizing they aren’t paper wasps, but i don’t know how to classify them. they are like red wasps but some of them have yellow faces. they definitely aren’t yellow jackets so i’m not sure.
Once upon a time I had a paper wasp land on my arm. My dad said “don’t move and it’ll just fly way.” So I stood still. And I watched that little stinker jab his stinger into my arm for no reason at all. I’ve been stung by them a lot in my life. Mostly from disturbing their nest unintentionally. But that time the wasp was not provoked. So I hate paper wasp.
Thanks for sharing this. I have a large paper wasp nest on my home. It's actually quite interesting, and the wasps don't seem to be bothering anybody. I'm in a wooded lot with few people around, so I'll leave the nest alone. I'll remove it in the Winter or Spring, since they don't re-use them. Nature is quite interesting.
If I ever picked one of these up I know for a fact it would sting me just sensing my extreme hatred for them. When I was a kid I stepped on a hidden nest of yellowjackets under leaves and was stung at least 100 times. So I have good reason.
Paper wasps are usually fairly chill. They don’t like tons of traffic going on around them, and each of the 3 times I’ve been stung was when I was going in and out of a doorway repeatedly that I didn’t know had a nest above it. After walking under them repeatedly (at least 8 times) in a relatively short period one came out and zapped me. In every case it was under a door that I had been using frequently. Difference seems to be the repeated disturbance bothers them because infrequent traffic doesn’t seem to. Hurts worse than a bee sting but not as easy to see on the skin.
Yes, I definately agree. The kinds of movements and the speed, depending on what we are doing, makes a difference, too. Overall, pretty much all the species in my state tend to be chill, for the most part. Maybe that's just for me, because SOOOO many people disagree with me. If I'm lucky, I don't take it for granted, lol.
I've been stung by paper Wasps before, hurts like hell. I left a nest alone that was on a reef on my front door. One day I closed my front door a little too hard for them and they stung me. I respect nature but I won't take chances with it again. And people have different reactions to stinks. I wouldn't downplay getting stung as some folks might be allergic to them.
I agree. Most people that say anything attacks for no reasons, is often mistaken. We are often right near their home or doing something that truly disturbs them..and just don't know it. Most things that have a bad rep are just misunderstood.
Caught a few of those recently. Honestly they aren’t out to sting you unless you swat them or squish them. If you gently place them in a net it would be ok. I never put a wasp on my finger and I don’t wanna risk getting stung since I just hate wasp stings. They itch and burn afterwards but they don’t hurt really bad right when you get stung
TBH, if they seem well mannered, I would for sure. I am not so...wise that way, lol. But in all honesty, I am pretty calculated. Especially with the Widows. I have too many videos of me holding dangerous things :/
@@chrisegnoto i bet you would, but if i remember theres a species of a very large honeybee thats out in kenya or near there somewhere, that very few that got close to them walked away because of how fast they attack anything or anyone that get close to their hives, and some say the sting is so painful that they dont want to ever be stung again, they call them the giant honeybee,if you search them it should come up,but do you think you could get close and not be stung
I have a queen paper wasp I'm keeping until spring was doing good but past couple days she's not been moving and doing normal stuff I'm worried any tips?
Sometimes those wasps can be quite annoying because when I mow the lawn they like to fly right in front of the mower and land in the grass in front of me and I can’t stop the mower fast enough and one of them gets ran over and next thing you know the whole nest that’s next to the gutter is stinging me but overall these wasps aren’t a problem
I am 10 and I held a wasp I was scared but it never stung me. Shes a good wasp, my dad won’t let me keep her I want her because now I’m more comfortable around yellow jackets. It was a normal small wasp.
So I’ve gotten over my fear of most bugs, including spiders. I handle them all the time and am rarely spooked. I’ve really wanted to get over my fear of wasps, I’ve never been stung and I’m hoping to learn more and understand them. I know wasps are very intelligent as well!
I think there might be some factors that play into how aggressive they are. I walked past one, probably a whole 5 feet away from it, and a moment later I heard it fly up behind my ear and it stung my lightly once and really hard a second time. The whole left side of my head felt like it was squeezing for an hour. It might've been a different wasp species because we have Cicada Killer wasps here too, it just didn't look like one from what I've seen online.
Video title says it all. Been stung by many a yellowjacket with no provocation nor any ill effect. As a child, I'd regularly harass paper wasp nests and almost paid with my life once I found out I was allergic. Left them alone and never once did they sting me again nor come anywhere near me lol.
i was stung by a red wasp when i was 13, veryyyyy painful. was swarmed by yellow jackets when i was 9 and stung 6 times. stung twice by scorpions, one in my bed and one in my shoe. gotta love growing up in texas. we got alot of vicious critters here.
We have some really aggressive red wasps as well as some Caterpillars in the garden around my house and I'm trying to shape it up for permaculture. I'm thinking about bringing in some paper wasps to mellow things out. I wonder how well they will do here in south east Texas?
They should do fine, I imagine. I know hot weather can breed hot tempers down south. There are species you have that are a bit more agressive than others.
Walked into a gas station and felt something crawling up the back of my neck. Grabbed it with my fingers and brought it around where I could see it and to my surprise it was a paper wasp. It crawled around my hand, flew to my torso, and wandered around my torso for another 5-10 seconds and flew away. Never thought I could manhandle a wasp without getting stung. Don't think I will forget this for a long time.
There is a dark brown paper wasp on my window sill. I dont want to kill it because there is a nest inside the window, and there is a hole in the window. I want to pick it up and move it back in the hole without threatening it, but I'm not sure how to do so, it's staring at me like a praying-mantis right now.
lol, they are like that. They aren't hard to move and if you move slowly, they will often cooperate. A container, broom a shirt or something that doesn't hurt them...
Been stung twice once when i was 8 and again a few months back. At 8 i was in pain crying from a sting, but stung at 15 hurt was less than I remember and it’s actually more annoying to feel the venom contract ur muscles.
Used to beekeep. Lately been escorting the paper wasps out with just my hand for a couple weeks,(they've been getting in through a gap I'm trying to fix in one of the old doors) only just got stung by one today. Pretty interesting creatures, each one different.
\ you are awesome and learned many things from this video. great to teach compassion towards wasps. i got stung by amuddauber a month ago twice under my eyes. the wasps sometimes get stuck in my very long hair when flying around me. i swatted at it not knowing what it was while it was stuck in my hair so it stung me. it swoll up quite a bit for three days or so.
Ok.. can you explain to me why i see them attack windows?? I mean like when they try to sting the windows. And is it true that they are attracted/offended by certain colors of clothing? Im trying to genuinely learn more about wasps so i can conquer my extreme phobia of them? Like it's not a fear... its a phobia. I hate even being outdoors for a second in the warm months because im so terrified.
Hi. Okay, I am betting they aren't really trying to sting the windows. These (among many invertebrates) will undulate their abdomen in order to breath. Especially when warm or busy. This can look like they are fixing to sting something. Perhaps it's that, but who knows. As for certain colors or whatnot. That can play a role in different species. If they look like bright colors or flower colors, that can cause them or any insect to fly closer to have a look. Same goes for fragrances. Most of the time, they are really good at finding out it isn't a flower, and they move on. I tell students in most of my programs, not to worry, just continue whatever we are doing and the insect will move on. They do. Sometimes, if you are lucky, imo, they might land on you or nearby and clean themselves and move on. This is also nothing to worry about, unless they are covered in pesticide, lol.
I have gotten some wasps that get in my house in the winter when it’s cold. Do you know anything about wasps like can wasps get in homes when it’s cold or something. It usually happens in late fall and winter. I believe they are paper wasps. Don’t get me wrong it’s not an infestation but there would be times where I would see at least 1 or 2 some days or every other week in those times
Yeah, wasps and hornets will seek warm habitats when the nights grow colder. They can sometimes resort to eating more meat and becoming scavengers at those times. In fact, European hornets will even turn to raiding spider webs for insects to steal.
I have several massive paper wasp colonies in my attic. They are 3 different Polistes species (red with black wings, black with yellow legs, and a brownish one with yellow markings). The ones living in my attic are pretty good roommates, though every year the overwintering queen manages to accidentally make her way into the living area of my house instead of the attic. I used to kill them but now I gently catch and put them outside- usually don’t have to do it more than twice because they DO learn! I still don’t want them living and breeding in my shed, because I am deadly allergic to stings. As long as they stay in the attic, we get along great.
Wow, that's really interesting. Are you in the south? We have red ones here, but I don't think it is the same species that you are talking about. I love the wasps and it is so much better when they don't seem to mind us - lol
@@chrisegnoto I’m in south central Kansas. The black ones and the black winged red ones must be very closely related, because I often see them together. The black species is Polistes metricus, the brownish one is P. fuscatus, and the mahogany one is P. carolina. They all forage together.
That's just them breathing. They undulate their abdomen to draw air in and out of their spiracles for respiration. Many insects do that, but most peeps only notice wasps and bees doing it because.......stingers - lol
When dealing with potentially dangerous or harmful wild "animals", taking your time to get closer and closer (increase risk) to a species over several days/weeks/months/years, will help you learn what causes them to respond and how they respond. After doing this with red paper wasps, I learned the local species here, very calm and easy to interact with safely. I used to hate and fear all wasps, but now I enjoy them and see why people are willing to have them as pets.
I'm an AC repairman. Paper wasps love to build their nests on commercial rooftop ACs. I've learned paper wasps are not aggressive, but they are defensive. I've opened control panel covers to discover a wasps nest inside. The noise and sunlight gets the wasps attention and they'll fly around me to see if I'm a threat. I've learned to remain still and calm and they'll relax and leave you alone. It was scary the first few times when a dozen wasps are flying around your head. I've changed out parts right next to the nest without getting stung. If I make a loud noise they will check me out again, then relax. It's kind of weird to put your trust in an insects ability to decide if you're a threat or not. I've only been stung once when I put my hand on a wasp i didn't see. I avoid mud wasps , they are aggressive. If you swat at a paper wasps and flail your arms around, that will get you stung. Stay still, take a breath and trust them .... it works.
Last week I discovered a little nest of 5 paper wasps on the top of a window frame in my bathroom (totally sealed off). Tbh I have developed a fondness for them, especially since I never have to come into direct contact with them. I’ll put my hand or face up close to the glass slowly, and I think they’ve become used to me! They’ll be a little shocked at first, but then they’ll resume their usual business. A couple will crawl up onto the glass and stare at me lol. Quarantine craze rlly hits when you wake up and immediately go tell your wasp neighbors good morning.
lol, I am pretty good at handling pain if I do get stung, but that doesn't mean I enjoy it. When it comes to handling animals and insects, I am pretty good at knowing how to act with them and also reading their body language. I can feel their moods...
Yeah, when I was younger, I figured out which was a male, because wasp males have curled antenna, and their face is more colored, and idk if its just me, but at the end of their belly, their stinging area looks 3 pronged and menacing despite not having a stinger. I imagine its some weird latch on device to hang onto the female.
Yeah lmao I dont know how I figured it out, probably some awful trial and error or something, grabbing them because I noticed their face was different. Although with ground wasps IMO its harder to tell from their face, and you gotta go by antenna, and their not as curly, just long. Like even though I knew they couldn't sting, they still pretend like they can, and they stick that out; which works, because I let go in fear via automatic responds.. so thats cool and weird lol..
Actually had one of these land on my nose a few years ago while i was mowing..that was a very uneasy feeling especially when it turned and looked directly at me cleaned its front legs and flew away thankfully knowing what i do about their temperament i didnt freak out and start swatting at it its all about controlling your heartbeat and breathing c02 in your breath can act as an attractant
Wasps are very primitive looking. If you shrank them down, and took away there wings they would fit in with ants perfectly. You can tell they are closely related to one another.
Yes, they are very similar to ants. And yeah, they are related and even share in the sometimes complex cast systems that ants do, although not quite as complex.
Check out their taxonomy. They are actually way closer than many people think. Genetically, both ants and bees should be considered wasps. When you ignore the paraphyletic barrier that cuts them off from the many other apicrotans, bees are just herbivorous wasps, and ants are just flightless, eusocial wasps.
I just move to a home surrounded by woods. As I was unpacking, I felt a pain on the top of my foot. I looked down to see a paper wasp on top of my foot. I didn't realize they were at all active in February in Ohio. This one was lethargic, but obviously aggravated for some reason. I don't know how it felt provoked, but it crawled up on top of my sock and stung me.
First one looks like a yellow jacket. Ive never known a wasp that wasn't angry. Those paper wasp when their wings go up I go away.. I remove them from my house if they are near where I enter or exit or walk. But had one nest in an out of the way area that went up later and I felt bad for them. It was a cold time for a wasp to have a nest. They seemed to huddle together and make it through the 30 something degree nights. I was lucky to see the last little guy fly away and never return a few weeks back in Oct when it was in the 40s. Hope he made it. I have no idea how long wasps live or if they move with temps
So I finally identified the wasps that are getting into my RV. They're pretty mild and slow. Not sure why they love my RV. I leave them alone unless one of them happens to get inside. They're so slow that I usually just get a pair of scissors and cut them in half while they're landed on the ceiling.
Got stung by a hornet on my pinky about a month ago. It hurt for 3-4 days. I got stung by two paper wasps today on my ankle and my forearm didn’t hurt at all but I’m about to go absolutely insane from the itching.
They sting me for no reason every time for just walking by... once I got stung on my eyebrow. The first time I was sitting there minding my own business
I have a bunch of paper wasps around my house and they are super chill. They have never acted aggressive to anyone in my house and even seem to tolerate my loud and clumsy toddler son. I read somewhere they don’t like yellow-jackets and was curious if this is actually factual.
Weirdly I somehow compromised with a paper wasp. I left her nest alone and she and her brood didn't attack. I even see her discipline a wasp for almost stinging me. I had my hand too close to the nest and q wasp climbed on my hand, I moved my hand in time. She didn't like what happens and pounced on that wasp.
Sort of. They do have a larval stage, and then they pupate within a chamber in the nest or hive. So, yeah. But you don't find them crawling about like fly larva.
I love wasps. I am not afraid of wasps. I sit in my balcony full of flowers and plants. Wasps come to eat insects from plants and to drink sugar water i kept in balcony. They always fly around me sometimes sit on my arms and hands. They never sting me. People have wrong perceptions about them. They are actually very calm and friendly if you just stay calm.
Wasp arent mean, but they build hives in the worst spots. I used to be allergic to paper wasp venom as a kid and have been stung numerous times. For me, I hive up for a week wherever I was stung. After 2012 I didn’t get stung again till last year. I’ve been stung twice then because my work has me out in stations near swamp/woods and they love building nests in my stations. I don’t try looking for them and they aren’t entirely aggressive (especially when foraging), but they’re always in the worst spots and are highly defensive.
@@chrisegnoto Honestly It was only the second time a wasp stung me on purpose in my 33 years on this planet. The first was at 6 and a ground hornet guard nailed me when I tempted fate jumping closer and closer to its nest. The annularis got me when I was removing rotten fascia behind my gutters and I hadn't noticed the nest. Turns out wasps don't like power tools within inches of their nest!

We need some beekeepers to attempt this!
If you find the hornet king on TH-cam he actually does this with bald faced hornet nests. :) I think you'd like the results.

Never stung by a bee or wasp, still terrified of them
Part of that fear might be from the unknown power of the sting of various species.
I got stung on the bridge of my nose and dude it HURTS 😂😂
A bee landed on my hand and I didn't notice until halfway at the end of my bus trip.
The best part was when she was chilling on my finger until the trip finished. After that I put her on the bench.
Dawg, i got stung on my ankle. Ive always hated wasps and i kinda hate them even more bc i got stung and i did nothing to it lmao
Even though you can read their body language, that is still gutsy getting them to climb up on your hand. I do see the beauty of their design.
Hey Chris, I'd totally be down with that !

If you are mindful, you can interact with them fairly easily :)
You and me both, Ologyny. I'm also allergic and I fear that if I get stung, I may not be around any longer. Thus, my worst fear is actually death.
I always have paper wasps hanging around my house in the summer and they have never done anything to bother me. The love checking out the plants in my garden, they are not aggressive at all
Agreed, aparently you and I are crazy or something :/
Sorry I love nature but this just isn't true various species of paper wasps are highly aggressive some more than others. We have muddobbers here where I live and they are super nice and never harm anything, but we also have yellow jackets that will literally attack anything that moves within a certain radius of their nest during late summer.
@@jamesu3816 They are talking about "paper wasps" not yellow jackets.
They get in my house and divebomb me in late summer after their nests have died… I hate them
Wasps are amazing!

It died. Still have it on the table here ☹️
I’ve never been stung but I’m still so scared of them. I’ve been scared since I was a kid and I think the irrational fear just kinda grew with me
Very understandable. It is common for that to happen.
That's pretty cool.
I was rebuilding a deck in the summer time, i reached under it and right into the nest! My whole arm filled with fluid, stayed that way for a week. I can honestly say the pain was worse than appendicitis.

I have an irrational fear of them and there’s one upstairs in my room! I’m downstairs! Idk what to do. I’m so afraid
I like how you portray wasps as interesting. The fear people have is mostly irrational.
If I ever picked one of these up I know for a fact it would sting me just sensing my extreme hatred for them. When I was a kid I stepped on a hidden nest of yellowjackets under leaves and was stung at least 100 times. So I have good reason.
Hey, Yellow jackets are different. They're mean.
What video camera are you using?
I've been stung by paper Wasps before, hurts like hell. I left a nest alone that was on a reef on my front door. One day I closed my front door a little too hard for them and they stung me. I respect nature but I won't take chances with it again. And people have different reactions to stinks. I wouldn't downplay getting stung as some folks might be allergic to them.
We have a paper wasp nest close by. We have an inground pool and they come to gather water. They are very docile. I call them the ginger wasps.
I love this comment. I couldn't agree more. And yeah, that itching!

We keep having paper wasps always coming out of our bedroom but there always slow and lethargic why is that? Even found a few dead ones too
Probably because the nights and environment are still cold this time of year. They are cold blooded, so the warm weather allows the to move quicker.

you are awesome and learned many things from this video. great to teach compassion towards wasps. i got stung by amuddauber a month ago twice under my eyes. the wasps sometimes get stuck in my very long hair when flying around me. i swatted at it not knowing what it was while it was stuck in my hair so it stung me. it swoll up quite a bit for three days or so.
Ok.. can you explain to me why i see them attack windows??

Two hoped on one of my legs and they're stingers were pulsing. BROOO. That scared me
That's just them breathing.
Stay still, take a breath and trust them .... it works.
You are so sweet and gentle with them.☺️❤️
:) Thank you, I love things, can't help it, lol.
Wow! You didn't even wear protective gloves or anything! I aspire to have your level of bravery, sir!
lol, I am pretty good at handling pain if I do get stung, but that doesn't mean I enjoy it. When it comes to handling animals and insects, I am pretty good at knowing how to act with them and also reading their body language. I can feel their moods...
Nature Now! - Chris Egnoto
That's a very good talent/ ability to have!
Of course its safe to hold wasps even I did it.....im only ten kiill me but Im not joking, tbh I was scared holding the wasp bit it was worth it.
That's neat about the antenna and I wonder about the end of the abdomen, too.
Yes, but they tend to only get upset when their family is threatened or they are. Mowing the lawn....could be bad - lol
@@chrisegnoto oh yea most definitely i wasnt too far from the nest under the eave of my house
They're so slow that I usually just get a pair of scissors and cut them in half while they're landed on the ceiling.
got stung 5 times last summer. Paper wasps are territorial and mean.
there are a few that nightmare are made of for most people, but most really aren't too aggressive as long as you're not aroumd thier nests.
Got stung by a hornet on my pinky about a month ago. It hurt for 3-4 days. I got stung by two paper wasps today on my ankle and my forearm didn’t hurt at all but I’m about to go absolutely insane from the itching.
"in next weeks episode i make friends with a Asian Hornet...."
They sting me for no reason every time for just walking by... once I got stung on my eyebrow. The first time I was sitting there minding my own business
Wasps and all, when they clean their antenna they are tooooo cuteee
Does paper wasps grow like an insect?
Like flies?
I love wasps, but a sting from Polistes annularis is God awful. The sting I got was my own fault, but my finger was swollen for over two days
I got stung by one once. I thought a leaf was in my shirt....so I wasn't careful. It wasn't bad, but I think I might have been lucky - lol
Yeah... they still skeez me out like no other.
I am holding my breath when you had those wasps on your hand.
You must love my wasp sweries, then, lol
Just about 10 minutes ago I got stung by some paper wasp looking thing in my room, worst sting from a wasp of my life
