RIP Sixto Rodriguez (July 10, 1942 - August 8, 2023), aged 81 And RIP Malik Bendjelloul (September 14, 1977 - May 13, 2014), aged 36 You both will be remembered as legends.
I miss ol Suga Sug. What an inspiration to people who play beautiful music that somehow finds a way to people's hearts without the industry. 🥲@@michaelrg3836
So sad that Malik took his own life, but through his tireless efforts to tell the story of "Rodriguez" he left us a legacy that will speak his name beyond the passage of time...
I think he wanted to close this crazy and beautiful story with a touch of madness and sadness that haunt the soul of every great artist that deceased before. It' s a big loss but it make sens.
You were blessed. Just imagine IF he had been given a chance what a super star of an artist he could have been. Thank heavens South Africa found Rogriguez and introduced him to the world. He was respected in New Zealand as well as Australia. Rest in peace our friend.
Thank you so much Malik Bendjelloul...What a fantastic documentary you made about Rodriguez..You left us too soon...May your Soul rest in peace...and you will be always the pride of Sweden . The Mokdads, Sundsvall, Sweden.
Much gratitude to Malik Bendjelloul for sharing this story before his death. I hope these two souls with enormous depth are swirling somewhere laughing at us all.
THANK YOU MALIK FOR FINDING THE GREATEST SONG WRITER ALIVE AND WELL AND I HOPE YOU FIND THE PEACE IN THE AFTERLIFE THAT YOU FAILED TO FIND WHEN YOU WERE ALIVE....R.I.P.
Once in a while something really stops you in your tracts...on closer inspection you find this lump developing in your throat and tears appear out of nowhere...and this sense of justice finally being done makes you believe that maybe ....just maybe theres still hope for humanity....thanks for sharing this story
it is a wonder Rodriguez made it out alive in his neighbourhood, these people have not idea how dangerous the area that he lived in was for many years, alot better now for sure
Miraculous how these two stories of Rodriguez and Malik are so interwoven; maybe Malik was born just to do this one docu. So, we need to reflect on the reason for Rodriguez being brought to human consciousness : qualities of humility, humbleness, gratitude, hard work for its own sake as reward.... In other words, the Truth might be more like SEARCHING FOR THE HUMAN SOUL!!! This is how it works.
I don't know how his music didn't sell outside of South Africa. It's timeless and amazing and ironically heavily played to tourists visiting my country. The irony of them being Americans not knowing a local favourite despite him coming from their own country.
They don't deserve this interview... I only know the mans music for two months and I know for a fact I'd be crying if he played that shit the way he did in front of me
They treat him like he’s just some showpiece on this interview. You could Malik had NO issue at all letting him talk but these interviewers asked Rodriguez only a few questions and it felt like Malik was the only one talking very much. There was a lot more engagement between Malik and the interviewers than there was between Rodriguez and the interviewers.
I have never listened to two albums that made my hair stand on end as much as his music, thom york and radiohead are the closest thing, if these two got together it would be musical perfection.
The real truth is we loved his music! There is nothing better than smoking a joint and listening to The cold fact. It had nothing to do with the End Apartheid movement. His lyrics are simple and profound.
@@sparekeiv Watch some of the other videos about him... half of the fourth finger on his left hand is missing... maybe had an accident while working because he did demolition-work for most of his life.
He would be in this universe but two things happened. Someone took all his royalties from his South African record sled, and he’s so humble and content with his life that he’s given most of his earnings from touring to family.
If he was white and not brown he would have been promoted like hell. Racism was so strong in American in the late sixties and early seventies. For Pete's sake Little Richard took the Beatles on tour in Germany before they became famous. Keith (Keef) Richards was a big promoter and admirer of BB King and Chuck Barry. Small narrow minds in America while Europe looked at the talent world in wide bright glasses. Look at what happened to Josephine Baker. France embraced her, in New York should was shocked, she couldn't rent a hotel room. So she high tailed it back to France where she was treated like a well deserved super star. What we are saying it was a sigh of the times back in the day.
He reminds me of José Feliciano. But apart from guitar skills, Rodriguez is even better than Feliciano as a whole package of a musician, especially as a song writer.
A Clip from the 2012 Documentary ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ has a hidden humorous side: My wife answered the phone at one-o’clock in the morning because it was on her side of the bed. Exhibiting a look of awe while pointing at the head-set, she mimes to me “It’s H-I-M!” I dash to the study phone and pick up the Caller saying, “Hello, is that Sugar?”
"the artist Rodrigrez?''... no director to say ''cut, take two?''.... or no editor to post-vid just zap out the 'grez' to guez?''.... that three secs was more than enough..... there's plenty of other interviews with the man.... outta here
Can't understand why folks are putting the lady down , she is lovely and obviously in tune with Rodriguez who is the paragon of modesty and humility . despite the onset of fame in his later years ...
Is it just me, or is the male co-host being a colossal prick? Very rude and self conscious. Otherwise, a great interview with a living legend. Rodriguez will live forever, because people (like us) will always identify with what he sang. A great loss to humanity, his passing. I'll always listen to his music. The guy lights me up!
Sidebar: Anybody know why this asinine pro-NRA ad is all over TH-cam? I can't watch a thing without having to listen first to that crap. But I love the Rodriguez story and the story of the documentary. Beautiful line from Malik:"Rodriguez' story: he didn't know he was famous, and then there's the South African story: they KNOW that he's dead". Fantastic place to begin.
i really really wished the woman did not speak AT ALL. She is an absolute picture and definition of "annoying".."irritating" ..." embarrassment" .... how to make a fool of herself....oh boy...
RIP Sixto Rodriguez (July 10, 1942 - August 8, 2023), aged 81
And
RIP Malik Bendjelloul (September 14, 1977 - May 13, 2014), aged 36
You both will be remembered as legends.
I rewatched the film this morning, having seen it when it first came out and watched it a few times in between. RIP Sixto.
It's so sad that such a great achievement could not sustain Malik in life. What a loss!
I miss ol Suga Sug. What an inspiration to people who play beautiful music that somehow finds a way to people's hearts without the industry. 🥲@@michaelrg3836
It kills me that Malik died at 36! And he committed suicide!! WHY!!! Why do amazing, successful, loved people do this!!
His documentary is an amazing masterpiece in and of itself!
I am a old man of 70 and have loved this man for most of my life as a South African so proud to have grown up with his music ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Being 70 doesn't make you old!!! What an amazing experience growing up w Rodriguez' music!
So sad that Malik took his own life, but through his tireless efforts to tell the story of "Rodriguez" he left us a legacy that will speak his name beyond the passage of time...
sad, but true
What irony, huh? Malik makes a film about a man who was supposed to have committed suicide and he ends up doing it himself...Go figure:
I think he wanted to close this crazy and beautiful story with a touch of madness and sadness that haunt the soul of every great artist that deceased before. It' s a big loss but it make sens.
Youssef .Z thats a ridiculous and awful thing to say
What??? I had no idea. That is f* up! So he took his own life on the day before this was uploaded??
I was soo lucky to see Rodriguez in the 70s😍🇦🇺
Where? How was it?
You were blessed. Just imagine IF he had been given a chance what a super star of an artist he could have been. Thank heavens South Africa found Rogriguez and introduced him to the world. He was respected in New Zealand as well as Australia. Rest in peace our friend.
Look at Sixto's snazzy suit! I am glad he was found, acknowledged & shown the love he truly deserved! I am sorry the other young man passed.❤
Just found you, the day you died. Reborn again in this Irish heart. Slán
Rest in peace ✌️ ☮️ 🕊 my brother 🙏 glad 😊 I got to know your beautiful music 🎶
THANK YOU MALIK FOR FINDING THE GREATEST SONG WRITER ALIVE AND WELL AND I HOPE YOU FIND THE PEACE IN THE AFTERLIFE THAT YOU FAILED TO FIND WHEN YOU WERE ALIVE....R.I.P.
Malik didn't find him; "Sugar" (Segerman) and 2 other guys found him.
Malik DID make a brilliant documentary about him.
Saddend by the news today..Rest in ❤ and peace to Rodriquez
THANK YOU MALIK FOR EXTRAORDINARY FILM AND FOR INTRODUCING US WITH SIXTO ❤❤❤!!! ...forever grateful 🤗❤!
Wow what a wonderful man. And how sad that Malik was so troubled that he did not see a way out. RIP
Once in a while something really stops you in your tracts...on closer inspection you find this lump developing in your throat and tears appear out of nowhere...and this sense of justice finally being done makes you believe that maybe ....just maybe theres still hope for humanity....thanks for sharing this story
Analiza Bonzo you spoke out of my true feeling which I can't explain in words.. thank you.
What a legend
What a beautiful spirit, Sixto Rodriguez ❤
I can¨t imagine a more inspirational real life story.
the quality of his voice is solid.....wow
I agree it’s the best story I’ve ever heard. Totally had me in tears when we finally meet Rodriguez
8:46 rodriguez is such a good artist that he can materialize a guitar out of thin air when asked to play a song.
it is a wonder Rodriguez made it out alive in his neighbourhood, these people have not idea how dangerous the area that he lived in was for many years, alot better now for sure
love this man, so real, real life make real man, humble, true.. a lesson of life so far from showbiz ligths
Humble and beautiful soul
Rodriguez toured in Australia in '79 & '81. He arrived by helicopter at Tanelorn Festival. He was also a huge success in Australia & probably NZ.
Rodrigues put South Africa on the map for something good as opposed to all the other bad stuff you hear. What a great story.
What makes me so sad is that Malik died.
Damn i didnt know that
Threw himself under a train in sweden
ohhhh gosh
really
Yes. So young, RIP.
This lady goes “in your song sugar man, you got layed off two weeks before Christmas” what a dope
The female host of this show is a dope. RIP Malik.
He is so awkward. Such a genuine man. RIP, poet.
RIP Sixto Rodriguez ❤😢.
this Man is a legend no greater, no less.
I don't know how his music didn't sell outside of South Africa. It's timeless and amazing and ironically heavily played to tourists visiting my country. The irony of them being Americans not knowing a local favourite despite him coming from their own country.
Am from S Africa and heard this for the first time at university. LOVe this man. ❤️❤️❤️
Rodriguez brought colour to my life ❤
They don't deserve this interview... I only know the mans music for two months and I know for a fact I'd be crying if he played that shit the way he did in front of me
THANKS SIXTO.
Awe that’s heartbreaking to learn about Malik life always gets better if you just hold on 💔😢
Awesome impromptu performance of sugar man.
RIP, Malik. 🖤
Imagine if Bob Dylan or Willie Nelson took him on tour. They should. He deserves it.
They Stole His Money But Could Never take His Songs
Dreadful, thieves, stole the money from a man who really needed it to provide for his young family.
I hold my Spanish guitar like Sixto Rodriquez when playing
What a great song "sugar man"
They treat him like he’s just some showpiece on this interview. It's called anti establishment not anti apartheid. We loved him for his music.
Bummer that Malik took himself out. Thanks for your art.
Bravo!!!!! Absolute Legend!!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️
Beautiful soul.
In 1978 I saw Rodriguez in Sydney twice ( he outsold rod stewart who was huge ) I saw Him again at Bluesfest in 2010 what a talent !
The day before this was published, Malik killed himself :(
I have never listened to two albums that made my hair stand on end as much as his music, thom york and radiohead are the closest thing, if these two got together it would be musical perfection.
wooaww, that Sugar Man interpretation is awesome !!! Best I've heard so far !
The real truth is we loved his music! There is nothing better than smoking a joint and listening to The cold fact. It had nothing to do with the End Apartheid movement. His lyrics are simple and profound.
Well said brother
and strong.
Sixto captured so much feeling in his art.
So sad about Malik :(
RIP Malik
This story helps to shift the balance a little to the side of good.
This was published 1 day after the tragic death of Malik Bendjelloul.....
A epic story. Better than ever story
Requiescat in Pace, Malik. We hardly knew ye.
This IS THE man,Love him, listen to him mose days, ripped off , people should be ashamed of themselves.
he is so smooth
Humble and natural.
Now I feel sad for both of them...
Anyone notice Rodriguez has a finger missing on his left hand? Amazing how well he can play with that handicap.
I count 4 fingers and 1 thumb on each hand. No missing digits.
@@sparekeiv Watch some of the other videos about him... half of the fourth finger on his left hand is missing... maybe had an accident while working because he did demolition-work for most of his life.
omg you're right. He still very much uses it to play though
rest in peace Rodriguez and Malik.
POV: you are here after listening to the Sixto Rodriguez - Things I Learned Last Night
Sixto's head and heels better than Dylan.
я один руский который это смотрит спустя 6 лет? видимо да, я узнал от гон флада)
Sit properly and stop touching him woman!
in a paralel universe this guy would be rich
$$$ should not be the Unit by which we measure our lives.
caleron What is to be rich?. You say be rich is to have material things?. Is that for you?.

You couldn't have that concert there today. Not sure what changed ;-)
I Love Him.
And Joar Benjeloull killed himself a few years later, but he ha a brother who is a FANTASTIC JOURNALIST HERE IN SWEDEN
He reminds me of José Feliciano. But apart from guitar skills, Rodriguez is even better than Feliciano as a whole package of a musician, especially as a song writer.
Best of the best what I heard from Ukrainians. It's brilliant and...very, very sensitive!

Priceless words, what a miracle.

What? Malik took his own life? Why?! Bless his soul 😭
depressions
suddenly..GUITAR!
AT LEAST on par with Dylan
She really isn't doing the movie any justice with her stupid comments. Watch it and be amazed
Why is she doing a job that requires empathy?
😂

It also had to do with him using his brother Jesus’ name to do with a law suit that helped him kind of disappear!
Other performers sing Bob Dylan's songs 'better' than Bob can sing!
She looks like she doesn't even know who Donovan is... Disgrace
Is she stoned?
cocained.
Great story, infuriating female host.
