Another powerful fact about Rodriguez is that his cultural heritage from Mexico is overwhelmingly indigenous. That just adds to the epic story of why this great man matters.
I grew up in the Detroit metro area in the 70s and went to a lot of live music at that time. I never heard of Rodriguez until I watched Searching for Sugarman. I am glad the movie focused on his inner grace. The way he handled life no matter whether it was fair or good or bad, was like a saint. We can all learn from his inner poise. Hope he is making great music in heaven.
Found his music in 1981, just completed a two year stint of military conscription, walked into a record bar in Hillbrow South Africa and a friend popped two albums in front of me, saying, “Buy these.” - Cold Fact and After the Fact (Coming from Reality), bought both albums without listening to them, went home and fell in love.

I just watched the documentary and have now fallen into a Rodríguez hole, trying to discover as much as possible about this man and watch his live concerts on TH-cam. I’m as amazed as his personality and character, as much as his story. It’s incredible to see how humble and human he is, completely uncharacteristic of legendary artists. He is shy and not at all comfortable in the limelight, but yet when he starts playing and singing, you see the mind behind the man, and it’s beautiful. He expresses himself completely through his music, and I’m so glad that he was found again and able to do this at least later in life. His is both a sad and happy story, and we have become better for knowing it and being able to hear this legend play.
I feel sad that he was not given any recognition in US, most probably because his lyrics were true but anti establishment. With the war in Vietnam sending thousands of young Americans to their death, and young people fleeing into Canada.
Along with many fellow South Africans discovered this gem years ago - had absolutely no idea he was not an international star on the level of the greats of his generation. By a miracle we have ' Cold Fact ' as a testimony to this gentleman's superb talent.

Its a shame that such a good, loving and a talented man had to wait to be appreciated. His music is remarkable. Im glad he got to enjoy some music success in his life time. It should have happened years sooner. Thank god for the documentery Sugar Man. It brought this talent into my life. Love Rodriquez the man and the musician.
Well he kind of got what he deserved in life at least while still breathing... Some artists die and get the recognition only after that, he got incredibly lucky all things considered
I have, mixed feelings, anger and pain for the such great live and triumphs, he has been taking away, and an immense happiness, for him who finaly get what he deserves. Thanks, South Africa, for keep it him alive.
Apart from Sixto's soulful artistry, his lead guitarist and the backing group generally are a tight and talented band. Backing and supporting Sixto very flexibly even when he lost the thread, and all the while enhancing his performance brilliantly, and never overshadowing the old maestro. A wonderful performance. Thank you so much for uploading this.

the man is 76 years young people and worked his ass off his whole life...great crowd...Thanks from the U.S.
he is 82 now was 81 at this concert
@@georgeclooney1293 Nope, he was 76 at the time of the concert, he announced he was born in 1942. That would make him 78 in 2020. Peace to you all.
I 'd just watched the documentary, I have never heard of him and i fell in love with him and his story, an example of artist and person.
I just watched it a couple days ago and I was surprised to discover an artist who I will be listening to from now on. The story is great but his music is even better !
I discovered him thanks to the Black Pumas cover of Sugar man. and I mean thanks to them!
LIKE ! AN ANGEL ! YOU ARE ! FREE ! SIXTO ! THE SUGAR MAN ! R.I.P ! ❤
Played in Australia early eighties, landed in a chopper played 4 songs and left remember it well , fan here 🇦🇺⭐
This forgotten and talented musician poet has been recognized after more than 3 decades thanks to real NOT FAKE journalists, giving out of heart and No Money to find him, just for the love of true music lover, poeme..etc..thanks to Malik who dared to challenge the odd to make him emerged from anonymous...Rodriguez is working class musician hero!
And rest in sweet, calm, soothing peace Malik. He reopened history and has helped given Sixto to us all.
This man has taught me so much, so much wisdom on life. I love and appreciate you more than you could ever know Sixto Rodriguez. I continue to learn from you everyday, and others will get the same privilege even long after you've left this world. Thankyou, from the bottom of my heart.
His simplness and humble is enough to bring it home
thankyou for enrishing Australia in the 70, 80,s still playing it today 2022 .
Your music isnt like anything else .
You are loved
Its a shame that such a good, loving and a talented man had to wait to be appreciated. His music is remarkable. Im glad he got to enjoy some music success in his life time. It should have happened years sooner. Thank god for the documentery Sugar Man. It brought this talent into my life. Love Rodriquez the man and the musician.
Lorna Smith think how sad it would have been if he had never been found. He has said anger is to strong an emotion to waist on a negative thing.
Well he kind of got what he deserved in life at least while still breathing... Some artists die and get the recognition only after that, he got incredibly lucky all things considered
He' seams happy with no regrets, so why feels bad for him, he is a happy man :)
if only he had got the recognition and fame he deserved back then, we would have a good 10 solid albums to listen to.
Considering he was playing with Glacoma and totally blind his talent is, was incredible.
💕
@almagirimai8931 , well put! good analysis
He was absolutely HUGE in South Africa, thought it was the same worldwide until 'looking for sugarman' came out!
Words cannot describe how humble and beautiful this man is to the world. Cannot wait to see him in Perth in 2019
Hi Annie, is he coming to Australia?
how do you know, what about Sydney...any info you could kindly provide?
All best
Kindest regards.
Que la tierra te sea leve, maestro Sixto Rodriguez
I definitely fell in love with this crack after watching his documentary searching for sugar man. I love his music and what a privilege to be able to see him here, it restored my belief that dreams come true and that what is done with love transcends and has its reward. ✌️❤️🎸
SIXTO RODRIGUEZ EL POETA MUSICO DE LOS POBRES TEDESEO 🇪🇸 EL VIAJE MAS VONITO DEL MUNDO ERES UN MITO DE LA MUSICA
rest in power sixto. thank you for the beautiful music.
The Man deserves to get attention from the whole planet. He's one of a kind, also one of the last. Viva Sixto Rodriguez!!
God bless you Rodriguez! ♥ Love from Prague, Czech Republic :)
As a south african, this man is god. Saw him live in cape town in 2001 and wellington new zealand in 2013
I cannot imagine what it must have been like to see him in Cape Town...wow
Jon Boyd he puts Springsteen to shame as a working class hero! Not that he’s competing with anyone...💖
He played in the small town of Strand. I thought it was going to be a tribute singer. Imagine seeing my teenage hero alive and well.
What an unexpected delight to come across this footage of the legendary Rodriguez! What a man, what a legend, what a beautiful human!!
every once in a while justice is served ! keep on rockin Rodriguez
Just that brother! just that
This is one of the greatest examples of an artists works influencing a person, a culture, a nation, and generations, to change, for the better.
Every artists of any medium wants their work(s) to have this kind of impact.
I always have tears when I watch his documentary.
YES South Africa thank you for finding such a precious gem!!!
South Africa loves you my friend... thank you for signing my CD's and the beer and the chat...
Just discovered him a few days ago after searching for the movie Searching, and I came across the documentary. Can’t stop playing his music. So lucky to everyone who’s seen him live. What an amazing soul. Thank you, Rodriguez.
Wow! From South Africa ... this brings tears to my eyes. Merci Beaucoup! :-)
Found out about this man when the documentary was nominated for an oscar and won. I live in Detroit and never knew anything about this gem we had here. Many blessings to him. He has a whole new audience now. Documentary makes me cry. Such a humble man. I'm so glad he got his just due.
That is so sad. It seems that America will only recognize talent after it has been recognized. Bad America, bad.
Detroit once again delivers magic when hope sometimes ceases to exits .. sir we salute you
Not sure this dry gulp in my throat can ever be explained of the love I have for this man.
RIP Sixto. The heavens embrace you now.
He starts his set with an Elton John song, follows it up with some Doors, and in my music collection, his albums rank up there with theirs in terms of their status and prominence on my list of albums and artists. Legend
God bless Rodriguez. An absolute legend.
Had the privilege of seeing him twice.
I’ve been playing his music - the soundtrack of my life - ever since I first heard it. Know every song backwards.

Thank you 😊
Thanks a lot ❤
what a beautiful and humble man.
discovered Rodriquez back in 1970-1971 after a friend returned after serving in the marines in Cuba where he found his "Cold Fact" vinyl album and brought it back to the states
I only watched it yesterday and I cried for this legend. I was brought up listening to this in the 70's and I thought he was such a star all this time. I'm so glad you guys found him and he got what he deserved.....
right at the end he apologises. Such a humble man. One of the greats in my eyes, right next to Bob Dylan. Grew up on their music :)
Bob who???
This man is freedom, genius and courage combined. Hero.
Humble, gracious lovely human being.
thank You -Rodriguez ❤❤❤
Such a beautiful soul!
no question
Indeed!
Rodriguez's 'Cold Fact' LP was HUGE in South Africa in the 70's. Africa loved you first Rodriguez!
um, you are incorrect there Catherine. Rodriguez smashed it in Australia. Awesome in the 1979 tour of Australia
@@sherylpretty5241 1975 precedes 1979 ...but l was unaware that he had toured Australia in 1979...the documentary implies that the later S.A. tour was his first. However...if you're right, l apologise.
yep 70's in OZ
Had both his albums in the 70's and had mates who lived in Sydney who saw his concert in the late 70's.
Yes.. every song there was huge He's amazingly
Feel nothing but pity and compassion for the 204 misguided souls who decided to thumb this musical beauty down.
2024 still listening to this man. Ive known this man 30 years of my life. Thx to my mama. Ive noticed only the people who have a real passion for listening to music only knew who he was. Not bashing on people but, if you knew who Sixto was, you were the very few.
What a lovely crowd, he deserves! I still baffled after watching the documentary.
He is beyond talented and wise man!
You can tell he really played for the crowd. No effects, no show. Just a man with wisdom and his old guitar. Very respectful audience. Happy to see him getting so much positive feedback.
He's such a perfectionsist. Most musicians would just play through their mistakes, not Rodriguez. He doesn't want to let himself or the audience down. Just straight up tells them when he "fucks up." Love the honesty.
Gracias Sudáfrica, por dale vida a este hombre.
Ustedes son los héroes de la Leyenda Sixto Rodríguez
Sacré monsieur sixto Rodriguez une des légendes vivantes encore en activité pour le bonheur des gens.
From Mexico: Thank you South Afrika!!!
I absolutely love him! He's so talented and humble. Glad he's finally getting credit ❤
Thank you South africa for giving us this music genius...love you ever more
Honest to god , I am In Love with this man! I will get to one of his 2019 concerts if I have to sell everything I own.
I hope you can do it!!!
Great for you Barbara. No other feeling but love can we feel for this musician man a wonderful human soul.
