You are so absolutely lucky with these wonderful contractors.
Because I live rural in Oregon and we have a hell of a time getting guys to come out and work for us even when we’re totally loyal and pay what they want and everything it is so difficult for everyone not just me ,this summer has been a bear. So you were just so lucky that these guys care about you and want to help you and I believe that they do care about you and want you to make it is not just money for them.
    They are made of gold!

I have heard many terrible stories of bad contractors taking money or doing crappy work. Or even just doing 1/2 the work! That would have been the death of my cabin as it had to get that new roof before winter! I took a HUGE chance with my contractor but he always kept in contact and showed up! My contractor explained that he gets 90% of his work from word of mouth and reputation is everything. But yeah, he and all of the people he brought on treated my cabin as if it was their own cabin. No short cuts. Extra special attention to details. And you will definitely be seeing them again! Thank you so much Violet!

I can't believe there was never a window there in the first place! Of all places to have great lighting, you'd want that to be in the kitchen. This window is a game changer for me! And it's nice to see my front yard from inside the cabin! Thank you so much Bev!

I always talk about the solitude here and how quiet it is. But there are always the sounds of nature that keep everything sounding nice. Not interested in 100% complete silence like a sound proof room! But hearing the birds, hearing the wind and of course actually hearing a distant river is amazing! The window addition is amazing! Like there should have been a window there all along! Seeing my front yard now is actually really nice! Who doesn't like to work in a kitchen with a view! Thank you so much Connie!

Be SURE! you use the right finish on your window casing because in the winter it will tend to ice up in very cold weather and when melt occurs it will run down on the casing. A fan directed at it will help keep it clear. You are cooking near the window which doesn't help.
Go to "Northern Tool & Equipment", enter "rv water pump". There is a video of the $89 pump.. Hook it up to 12 volts and add a couple hoses and you can have running water from a storage container to a simple camper sink etc. Also transfer water between containers. Saves lifting & pouring. I used the blue 30 gal bbls. for storage. I used something similar to Cabela's deluxe camp sink that was stainless steel with a simple faucet.

    • @AloneinRemoteAlaska
      @AloneinRemoteAlaska  2 ปีที่แล้ว

A lot of fantastic advice here George! I understand all my windows will require some TLC during the winter and I plan on swapping out all the windows to this same casement style eventually. I have 4 55 gallon plastic (open top) barrels coming to me from Colorado when my son brings up all my stuff. Water transfer will be a concern for sure! The Cabela's camp sink is something I have eye balled a few times. More for my outdoor kitchen maybe. I like it! Thank you so much for the awesome PRO TIPS George!

Love your piquresque opening...and the quietness...what beauty and peace you live in...so healing and rejuvenating for the soul. AND YES - you chose correctly on your beautiful window, which will now give you years of pleasure, which you would have forfeited if you let yourself become impatient and opted for something quicker. Good for you! I must tell you, the stars are with you in finding that fantastic contractor. I think the folks who choose to live and work in Alaska are of a high caliber in integrity and workmanship. Their word is their word. 🙂 Loved that yummy looking dinner, even though I'm plant based. It looked absolutely scrumptious! The best part of this property is the solitude! Sitting outside and hearing nothing but mother nature is the way to live! Sometimes even the birds get a bit carried away but that also means no predators around. My contractor is awesome! I had only contacted him because I was casting a wide net and emailing every contractor I could find. He was the ONLY one to contact me back! How lucky was that! And honestly I don't think my contractor would have allowed Home Depot windows because he is making sure the cabin stays safe and rustic! He literally would have told me to have someone else install them if I had decided that way! And that's what makes him good! The pork chops where incredible! I had done a vegetarian dish awhile back but the footage was all bad! I will do it again soon. Thank you for joining my journey here! We have some interesting times coming up! Thank you so much

Hello Alone, thank you for your recent response. It is always a pleasure to hear from you here in the UK. Your world is so completely opposite from mine, which is what I love so much about it. I think there is always a degree of escapism in most of us, but you have achieved the ultimate and am loving that you are sharing this with us 👍. I think it's going to be fun for all of us to 'meet' your son and will be interesting to see your sightseeing trips together, which you hopefully will be sharing. I loved your opening peaceful scene this week with the river. It is amazing how far sound does travel. How far do you need to walk from your cabin to see the view of the river? The window addition is fantastic, giving another dimension to your home. The view is beautiful and peaceful and brings the outside in to your living area. I see you have a table under, so somewhere nice to sit and look out now, when you having your meals or a coffee or just feeling reflective. I had a thought, when i was watching the overhang support being installed. Would you want something to hang from there? Something decorative that could hang as a permanent fixture? Just a thought. When you have contractors visit to do work for you, do they ever comment on your choice to live out there alone? Or are they used to meeting people living as you do? Are there many women living alone do you think? I imagine you might be the only one in Alaska 😊. Even though I don't eat Pork chops, your recipe looked extremely tasty with the cherries. I think they compliment each other well...recipe additions are fun. Thank you for this update Alone, keep safe and look forward to your next installment 😍

It is always my pleasure to bring you along for my journey here! Once my son gets here, we will have to unload the Uhaul and I have a couple projects for him but we will definitely be doing some sightseeing and bringing you along! The river we were listening to in the beginning is about 2-3 miles away (I think) but it is through some rough untrailed country. Everything past my backyard is National Park or Wildlife Reserve so I can't make a trail but a path will be wiggled through somehow. I have not given any thought to hanging anything in the front except maybe the American Flag. Every person that has worked on my property so far loves this property. they just wonder how I was able to find it. And yeah they are shocked it's just me and Kenai! I think there are a few other women who live out here alone because they have commented. I just may be the only one with a TH-cam channel. To be honest, I am not a pork chop kind of gal either but when I do make them, I like them to be tasty! Fruit always helps! This recipe is amazing! Thank you so much!

I have casement windows throughout my home and I love them! The screens are mounted inside so they don’t get so dirty.
If that cabin stood through many winter snows as it was built, the changes you’ve made can only add to its stability.
Btw, Julia Child said a tiny bit of pink in pork is perfectly okay. Folks who don’t care for pork chops probably ate over cooked tough chops. Will try your recipe!

Casement windows just make sense for me. They are beautiful and safer in case I ever need to use one! (fire) The cabin is very sturdy and now that it has a new roof, it will out live me easily! Oh NOW Julia Childs says its ok after I spent years perfecting the pork chop cooking! LOL! And yeah I think most people hate pork chops because they were cooked to the texture of leather! And they taste so awesome when cooked correctly! Thank you so much Deb!

Kenai and I really enjoyed the meal! You should give it a try and if you don't have a big dog like Kenai maybe you can eat most of it yourself! Kenai always gets 1/3 of my dinner! And the new window is so nice! Brings in so much light and I can see my front yard now! Thank you so much Kimberly!

Oh the music! Sometimes it is SO difficult to find just the right music! I ended up signing up for two music services to make sure I have enough to choose from. It can make or break a video! And that window was so worth waiting for! I love it! Hope you try the recipe sometime! It's awesome! Thank you so much!

I'm so glad you waited for the window you wanted. I absolutely love it. That part of your house on the outside looks really nice with the new window. Enjoy it. I ordered a t-shirt and a cap from your Alone in Remote Alaska store . I should be getting it soon. Take care and God Bless ya always

Hello Lisa! I am very happy I waited as well. The window looks so much better and now I want the other 6 replaced! And thank you Lisa for your purchase! I get notification when something is purchased but they don't tell me anything about who bought it so I can't add them to the contributor wall at the end of each video! Thank you for letting me know so I can add you to it! I have not received my samples yet so I am not aware of the quality but PLEASE, if you are not happy with the purchase, do not hesitate to return it! Thank you so much Lisa!

Ok now I’m hungry. That pork recipe looks so delicious. Definitely going to try to make that. The key word is try because I’m not the greatest cook. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us. 🐶💖😀👩‍🍳 Stay safe my friend. I love your new 🪟 window. Great 👍 choice.

HA! No worries Carri Ann I always show simple recipes as that is how I like to cook. Although I do have some complicated ones too! The new window is just so nice! And now I want to change out the other 6! 🤪Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

Hi Alone! The new window looks great. Perfect place for it. Cheeries over pork chops is something neither of us have tried before. Saving this recipe! Catching up!

The window looks great! I agree with you that vinyl windows would not be good. The added sunlight will help a lot. The pork looks very tasty!

Hello Beth! The pork chops were incredible! Kenai was begging me to eat the other one and I almost did since Kenai got about 1/3 of my pork chop! I am happy I waited for this window. My contractor had to drive all the way out here just to install a window! But it has brightened up my kitchen so much that I keep thinking the front door is wide open! I love it! Oh and now I can see if someone is in my front yard!! LOL! Thank you so much Beth! 🧡🤗💚

Morning from Arizona. You asked about the window. When i had my log cabin. It ruined the vibes and the look of my cabin when they wanted to put painted windows and doors on it. I stood my ground and waited for the clear wooded casements and it added to the beauty. You done right

Yeah for sure windows can make or break the overall look! I am very happy with this window and now want to get them all replaced! But that will be awhile. It will get done though! Thank you so much
