I am Winne Clement -flutemaker/ musician.
This is a basic tutorial on how to start playing the Romanian Caval.
Since there is not to much info around and many of you where asking me about it I decided to start making some simple home made tutorials on playing various types of woodwinds. If you have any questions or requests don't hold back and I will try my best to answer, have fun!

Hi. I'm from Romania and i had a few kavals gathering dust on top of my bookshelf. Watching your 'kaval tutorials' made me clean them up and try to play them againg, and with your help i'm able now to play a few notes.
I'm still waiting for "Part 2" :)

Thank you very much for the tutorials. I've looked everywhere for tutorials on how to play the caval since acquiring one a couple years ago. I will certainly watch if you come out with any more tutorials.

Great tutorials! Your Kavals must be very good, 'cause on my 5-hole Romanian Caval I could never make that slide/glissando!
In the original recording, they use a 6-hole traditional Caval, with a hole for the pinky which creates that perfect D natural.
what is the original recording? it's a traditional song with many independent versions and multiple old recordings. also you can find many renditions of the song played just fine on 5 hole with half-holing the D, but it does take some practice to nail the intonation. as a starting point, you can try covering the 3rd hole with the tip of the ring finger (instead of the flat), i found it much easier to pull it off like that at first.
