On account of the previous upload having audio issues, I have fixed those but the wind noise is back. With that said, I added a few other bits. --James

Just inherited one just like that in nickel. It was my father’s who served on the LAPD from 1971-1991. Miss you dad.

Your father’s gun that he carried was probably a special edition version authorized by the Department. I carried the same weapon on the LAPD. It should say Los Angels police department on the barrel. It’s stainless steel not nickel.

@@professorpewpuew Real life problems kept me away for a while. After my dad died I needed to spend a lot more time helping out my mom. Trying to keep her in her own house instead of having to go to the care center. Also was getting a little burned out on youtube and was starting to having trouble with cataracts that were getting worse. Hard to do a shooting video when you can`t see the sights on the gun. But now I`m about to retire and ma finally had to go to the Care Center, so I should have plenty of free time. Thought I would ease back into being more active on youtube again. Also finally had the cataracts fixed. Not fun, they keep you awake while they do the surgery, but it beats the hell out of going blind. :)

Mines about 45 yrs old, tgt trigger hammer and REALLY tight lockup. Not surprisingly, it's quite accurate as well. Mint condition. Sinking wad cutters into a bullseye is a very nice way to spend an afternoon with this revolver. It may not be very tactical or cool, but sure it's gratifying as heck.

Have a 14-4 with target trigger and hammer and a Bomar rib on top. I use it for local competition and have won many matches with it. SA Trigger breaks cleanly at 2#, DA trigger is about 6.5#. I shoot slow fire in SA and timed and rapid in DA. LOVE this gun

The six-inch blue steel Model 14 was a mainstay with the LAPD during the 1950's and 1960's. Some of the six-inchers at LAPD were cut back to 4-inches by their armorers, as the Model 15 took root at LAPD and gradually replaced the 6-inch Model 14's they were still using. I believe that's the way the pecking order went with the Model 14 Masterpiece and Model 15 Combat Masterpiece in that given time period.

FYI - Posting this in 2023. The Model 14 has not been available for some time now.
Currently, the only .38 Special revolver S&W makes is the Model 10.
Also, the LA Police department didn't offer Model 14's to their officers. They offered Model 15's.
There is a very good series of videos on YT where a former LA Police officer talks about things were back in the 70's and 80's and how much things have changed since then.
He uses his own carry weapon from that time, a Smith & Wesson Model 15.

  • @1972glm
    @1972glm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

LAPD period of use is more late 40's/50's to late 60's if I recall. Definitely till the late 60's, where they then switched over to 4'' model 15's. Actually, some officers had their 14's turned in and the department cut the barrel to 4'' and reattached the front sight. Unfortunately, IIRC, for a period a 6'' .38 (a Model 14 or a Colt Officers Model Match, if you bought your own) was your sidearm-plains clothes too. So you had plainclothed units trying to hide big long revolvers. If you look up the sidearms of the two LAPD cops involved in the 'Onion Field' incident, they were plain clothes and had a model 14 and a colt with 6'' barrels.

Season 1 of Adam 12 1968-69 used these model 14s.
      Later seasons were Model 15s.
Nice 38... I prefer the 4 inch barrel for me, but these 6 inch ones are really accurate.

    These are gorgeous gorgeous guns.
I was wondering if you or anyone else here who’s more knowledgeable on these olds Smiths could help me out a little bit.
I just bought a model 14 recently that’s in pretty decent shape.
It was a police evidence seizure that I won with a bid of $275.
The seller didn’t list any information about it other than it being a model 14 and the pictures didn’t make it look like it was in very good shape.
When I got it in hand it seriously looks significantly better than the pictures made it seem. Blueing looks decent and it just had a little rust on a few places.
My local gunsmith function checked it and it’s in perfect working order and has been all cleaned up.
I’m trying to figure out when it was made and if I got a good deal though.
All I know about it is that it has a pinned barrel and doesn’t have a dash. It’s just a model 14 I guess.
What exactly do I have here??
Did I luck out with it?
Thank you so much to anyone who bothers reading this and can hell.

These particular revolvers were designed to shoot wad cutters at target velocities . So I wouldn't be shooting any +Ps in the older ones .. The older ones from the 50s and 60s had a very sweet, light ,crisp ,trigger pull and easy double action right out of the box because time was spent fine tuning every gun back then . No need to go to a Smithy and have him stone and polish everything ... It was done at the factory .
This is a shame they don't spend the time on them like they used to ... because today with the better metallurgy and the use of CNC equipment they could produce an even more superior revolver at an even lower cost (today vs 1950 allowing for inflation) . If you can get your hands on one you will love it , I promise ...
