I own a V90 T6 and I will say Volvo's Aisin 8 speed is definitely is more on the smooth side instead of fast shifts. I hope the new DCT will work better
I want to like it, I love the way it looks, (I had an 84 DL wagon for a few years and absolutely loved it and loved volvos ever since). But with transmission like that and such a complicated engine/engines can't see that it's worth it for that price. If you bought one you would have to anticipate mechanical/electrical issues. I wish Volvo would do better especially since they're one of the few manufacturers still making wagons.
i love wagons. but volvo's T8 line is horribly confused and over engineered. modern volvos are already unreliable and they throw two motors and piles of electronics into the mess. too much power in the front and not enough in the rear - resulted in torquesteer in the xc60 t8. its hybrid performance is horrible and it's way overpriced compared to the competition.
2016 Volvo Polestar was the pinnacle of their engineering achievements, T6 in-line 6 with Twinscroll Turbo and Rebel Blue. Disclaimer I am biased af because I own an S60, you guys should review one of those to compare it to the newer model.
Not Volvo’s best car but styling-wise they’re just killing it right now. The headlights, body lines, and interiors are top notch on so many of their new cars.
Brian Oof, I don’t know where you’re getting that opinion at all. Volvo used to be really bland but they’re one of the only car makers doing something truly different right now. Their styling is so distinct with stuff like the thor hammer headlights and their use of stuff like white woods and really clean interior lines that give it that Scandinavian look. It’s so refreshing.
Great job doing videos in winter. The scenario fits this Swedish car perfectly. Also you keeping it real, everybody can do this in California... ;) The filming quality, lighting and framing is done soo well despite the conditions. Many of us viewers live with winter driving conditions and it is just a part of our real world experience.
I adore this car and it's perfect to review it in snow, but i don't think hating on transmission and bad launches is fair because all volvos (even "performance" ones) are all about comfort, not hard launching or fast downshifts. And in regards of general car ownership comfort, volvos are amazing.
I am interested in the basis of your complaints. I just drove this car and was super impressed, preferred over my base Porsche Macan in almost everyway. The technology, the handling, seats, the brakes, the paddle shifters. This car has it all and a near perfect high end daily driver
I have a 2019 XC60 T8 in Canada and can say the powertrain is horribly frustrating. You can’t have it default to AWD, so it will start in Hybrid which is RWD electric. If you’re cruising around town in Hybrid or Pure mode and turn down a poorly cleared road you’ll want AWD. To do this you need to go into the infotainment system and turn on AWD. Alternatively you’ll need to wait until you start slipping until the front power kicks on. This is fine when the car is running, but my garage is underground so I need AWD from starting. When the car turns on I need to wait for the infotainment system to boot before I can turn on AWD, which is frustrating. The cameras are also fully linked to the infotainment booting so often aren’t ready until I’m fully backed out of my driveway. Driving in Hybrid mode in snow and ice results in a lot of rear tire spinning followed by a jolting thud as the front tires realize they’re needed and the engine turns on. It’s has reached the point where I don’t trust the T8 in snowy and icy conditions. It definitely doesn’t feel like the engineers who designed the car live in a northern climate like Sweden. This is confirmed by the programming of the pilot assist which likes to brake late, even when set to brake early. I don’t like to ride up on someone and brake at the last possible second, especially in snow or wet conditions. Combined with an ABS issue relating to regenerative braking, described below, it can create a horribly dangerous situation. The simple fix would be having the ability to choose which drive mode the car is in when it turns on. In summer I’d set it to hybrid, and in winter I’d have it on constant AWD. The infotainment system feels like Apple CarPlay was an afterthought and while it works, isn’t implemented well. Simply adding the ability to reorganize the ‘home screen’, or delete some options would resolve 90% of the issues. Solely a software issue. A lot of wasted space above the car play window on the home screen. No split screen is also a huge miss. Traction is also an issue. There is so much going on with the competing drivetrains that the rear tires end up spinning routinely before the front wheels kick on. I don’t understand the larger polestar brakes, the stock T8 can do a nose stand. That said, with regen braking on if you his a manhole cover while braking on dry pavement that tire will slip turning on the ABS. As we all know ABS extends braking distance so you feel like you’re sliding on a dry road. This is the dangerous I mentioned when the slippy braking is mixed with the late braking Pilot Assist likes. Also, the washer fluid through the wipers is heated in T8. I don’t regret getting a T8, but do hope they resolve some of the transitions between electric and gas. The ride is a bit jolty if you run in Hybrid as it jumps between electric and gas. In power/AWD it is smooth, as are Pure and my custom raised profile of raised air suspension with pure mode. It’s just laggy. Not at all a sporty. Numbers are ‘new math’. Performance is like a Golf GTI... a bit laggy, can be quick, traction will leave you wanting more.
Joe Mikey I was in that position a few months back while shopping for a new midsized SUV. I rented 5 different cars to get extended test drives and ultimately settled on the XC60. I wish I had waited until winter, but assumed if the designers are from Sweden then it’ll be fine in Canada. From what I can tell the biggest differences in the polestar engineered V60 are the 15 extra horsepower from electric, and the bigger brakes. I would love more power as, like the v60 featured, it’s not a real 400hp. As I mentioned above the tiny brakes on mine are insane. The combination of regenerative braking with conventional brakes results in impressive stopping power... on dry pavement. On snowy, wet, icy conditions, even with brand new X-Ice tires the wheels lock too easily and ABS takes over. I’m going to swap the Michelin X-Ices out for studded Hakkapelita 9s which should be here this week. Where I live winters are more icy than snowy. I also invested in some mud flaps to help disguise the rear studs a bit. Let me know if you have any questions along the way. Being able to talk to existing owners is something I appreciated during my hunt.
Abbas Haider Nobody brags about Volvos 😂 I mentioned it because they missed it which is more exciting than localized spray. 2020 the Kias and Hyundais have heated wipers now. I believe MK6 Golfs has heated wiper fluid too... circa 2011.
5putput I said that because it may have seemed like I was shitting on it. I like my Volvo way more than the 2018 GLE 63S it replaced. I can’t say too much bad about it as I gave it to my cousin who will definitely read this 🤣. It fits into my life as a weekend vehicle where I’m likely to have passengers, not a daily driver. Besides, they’re relatively cheap,l so no regrats! Although I am starting to get excited about the Polestar 2. Should arrive just in time for me to retire the XC60.
It’s rarely so, but the lack of punch is plainly visible on video. I drive a previous generation V60 D6 Polestar, and because of the low-end torque of the turbocharged diesel engine matched with the instant torque of the electric motor, it doesn’t need all that much horsepower to knock your brains out when you floor it. I’d personally recommend always getting the D6 instead if you want punchy fun in a Volvo. Sure, it doesn’t have the petrol engine sound, but they already douse it so hard with sound isolation that the diesel ricky-ticking away under the bonnet sounds no worse, and in my opinion, actually makes things better. And you don’t feel underwhelmed by the performance on top of it, even though it is mostly placebo.
I like the winter reviews. It lets you know how the car looks in the winter, you get to see how the water runs along the body lines, and if there are any annoying fenderbergs that you'll have to remove every morning.
I’m excited for your upcoming Polestar reviews. I would rock this car, despite its price. The seats are amazingly comfortable, the sound system is incredible, and it’s not the usual BMW or Mercedes.
It seems to me that with the multitude of drive train components, and the overall complexity of the system, this is a vehicle I would not want to break down in on the open road, hundreds of miles away from the nearest dealership or brand qualified mechanic.
I still own one, at 240k miles and still running strong on original engine and transmission. I doubt that any of these new Volvos will be running strong at 240k miles on original engine and transmission.
5 cylinder Volvos were nice but their day has passed. You can always find used ones. What I did not like about the 5 and 6 cylinder Volvos was the boat like turning circles. The new Volvos have much tighter turning circles. I look forward to Volvo's electric period. But they got to get it right. That it is coming in Polestar first gives me hope. The xc40 Recharge is a very important car for Volvo. If that has good performance and range, then Volvo has taken a big step. But they also have to get a charge network down and have fast charging.
@@benjaminsmith2287 I think its the wrong way to force people to buy electric. Brands like should keep the older engines alive. Lets see what customers actually want.
I know it's rough to test and film cars during winter in the Great White North, but honestly, for those of us who drive cars on snowy roads for 7 (or more) months of the year, I love these reviews. On the plus side, at 5:15 you get the rare test of how well can the wipers clear slush from the windshield. It's like the sunvisor test, part 2.
I think your reviews are pretty comprehensive. Similar to Doug’s quirks, but everything else car. It’s also good that you guys don’t agree all the time but don’t argue about options.
Maybe..... just maybe..... other auto journalists didn't set satellite presets because they don't listen to satellite radio because it SUCKS. Literally any streaming service is better for the price. Great review as always, guys! Just my gripe about satellite radio.
@@chocolatewheelchair amazing how easily people get triggered these days. But you still can't choose exactly what to listen to on sat radio. Until then, no one will ever convince me to pay for it. Also had it for 3 month free trial on last car. Spotify blows it out of the water.
I was just on Doug demuro site but why he can't get a C8 Corvette and I was proud to see how many people recognize you as legitimate place to get car reviews people that are not just kids looking for an entertainment anyways proud of you guys great job
The styling of the interior and exterior are tops and it is super safe because it’s a Volvo. I agree though, don’t get convinced into thinking it’s a sports car. I had a 2015 V60 with the sport package and the disappointing performance of the transmission was one of the reasons I sold it and bought a car with a manual again.
@@zephyrrlt9425 but as 'boring' as some may say a volvo is, tesla cars are even more boring with no engine noise, no ability to shift up and down gears and the car basically drives for you. So as safe as it may be, a tesla is just...
@@sjwang40 I drove the older model S p90d earlier this year, It was really fast in terms of accelleration and I have to admit that part was pretty fun. But I felt that it was lacking character because it lacked steering feel and felt a bit numb if I'm honest. I can see where you guys are coming from, but I guess a Tesla just isn't my cup of tea 🤷🏻♂️
Looks wise I love it. However it's far too complicated for my liking. Turbocharged, supercharged, and electric hybrid systems all mashed into one thing feels like a nightmare waiting to happen. I'd much rather have the actual performance Polestar V60 from the previous generation and save 20-30k
My wife's new XC40 has the new shifter. She has had no problems picking reverse or drive and she is not a car nut at all. Makes perfect sense if you think of safety first, always neutral first then the gear you want, only one tap away from neutral from either gear.
It's a horrible design -- the worst in the automotive industry. Other carmakers get it right with electronic shifters -- drive is one click away from reverse, and vice versa. Also, the silly drive-mode roller dial should be on the steering wheel, not down around the cupholders... bad design...
It's obvious that is not the best car in the segment. But honestly, I don't care. The design and the attention to detail is top notch. I think that is one of the most beautiful cars that you can buy new, not just for the segment but of the whole market. I would drive this over any any other brand.
I just bought a S60 polestar, it does have gold caps on the stems. Comes in a little pack in the glove box. And there is launch control. All you do is put it in Polestar engineered mode, and the put the brakes down and gas down all the way. Makes a big different with the launch.
I have a T6 V90 Ocean Race with the Polestar chip. You can kick the back out in snowy conditions (Hakka R3s). Although the delay in the infotainment on start up and initial acceleration are clearly negatives, overall, it’s a great car. The interior is absolutely gorgeous, the seats are incredibly comfortable, the supercharged and turbocharged engine actually makes some pretty cool noises and you don’t see yourself coming and going. I like the idea of the T8 V60 Wagon, but decided to take a pass when I realized the engine and electric were separate. At least with the T6 I can get 50% of the power (maybe more with the chip) to the back wheels. Just seemed like it would be more fun to drive. Based on the reviews I’ve read and listened to, including yours, I think I made the right call. I would say mine is a “sporty” wagon that works very well in the real world as a car that does everything pretty well, but is not a 911 chaser. As long as you come in with the right mindset, Volvo wagons can be a pretty good option.
Yep, I agree: electric motor powering only the rear axle and engine powering only the front axle is a downer for me, too. Too much disparity between the axles -- as noted in this review. Better to get an ICE-only Volvo with AWD powered to both axles by the ICE or a new Polestar 2 with better electronic AWD going to both axles. (I bought a 2018 Panamera 4 E-Hybrid last year after looking very closely at the Volvo T8s, with lots of test drives, and the technology is night-and-day better in the Porsches with electric motor and ICE powering both axles, plus the gear shifting is way smoother and the all-electric range much better in the Panamera. For an automaker that's touting its electrification, Volvo is far behind in many ways.)
Honestly, I loved when Volvo made only 5 and 6 cylinder engines and did not make 4s. I didn't love 4s. I had a hard time with Volvo announcing they'd introduce 4s and in time phase out the 5s and 6s. They have. They're not going back. A lot of comments are complaining about it and I get it. But time moves on, we have the 4s. Volvo is looking to go hybrid to electric. The next-gen flagship xc90 will be a smoother and better car with a performance electric in it than the "T8" motor that has the same set up as this Polestar V60. That's due in 2022. What I like about this car is it is a V60. But I'll take a normal T6 AWD version. When will this car be greater? When it is electric. You can't beat the quiet and smoothness and directness of electric power. I think that's the future. So, at this point, I'm fine with Volvo losing the bigger engines even though I like them way better. They're moving forward. That's a good thing.
I believe that the slow transmission tuning was toned down on purpose. The car with three turbos and el motor was to jumpy and just configured for an average driver. It would be hard to control the 2 litre engine in high revs.
I've got a 2016 V60 T6 polestar tuned AWD wagon. I do like it, but it's biggest problem as a performance car is the transmission is not very responsive. The new ones are no better, and they drive worse in my opinion with the 2.0 engine, prefer my 3.0L... so it seems that Volvo is getting worse if you're after a performance drive. I'll miss the excellent seats when I change cars but my next vehicle won't be a Volvo because of the overlly comlpex drivetrain and poor transmissions (and I really hate having all the buttons burried in the infotainment). Love the wagon though, so likely going to a C43 wagon at some point in the future. The 2019 C43 I drove wasn't technically much faster to 100 km/h than my current car, but it felt faster because of the transmission. Currious if Audi will bring an RS4 Wagon to Canada in the future, The RS6 wagon is great but a little too $$$$ for most of us :)
That is a shame to hear about the new transmission. I have the exact car you have but in 2015 sedan form. I don't like the lack of exhaust sound or the transmission on that car. It is a shame the new transmission isn't improved because I love Volvo's styling? Too bad Audi doesn't have something that would better suit you besides an SQ5 or a tuned A4 Allroad.
Antonio Akiki yeah which is ass, since In my own opinion, every Volvo is very handsome looking, sporty even except the smaller suvs, but all their sedans and wagons have such a sporty look yet they aren’t any faster than other cars due to the transmission and all the doohickeys the engine has going on
Please mention the battery charge level in EV and PHEV reviews if you complain about performance. These PHEVs only do their *full* performance if you have a well charged battery and you are in sport mode that fully engages *both* drivetrains at the same time. This should also help the first kick from both launch and when punching the pedal during driving. You only get the electric *jerk* if the battery is charged. That also incentives gearheds to charge them up to get more power.
5:50 you can use the navigation still, which will give you directions on the drivers display and heads up which you will not get if you use nav through apple car play
0:24 - Sorry guys, you guys made one mistake here - You should have put the car to ESC Sport mode (right next to the charge & hold buttons). I have a new 2020 XC60 T8 (same powertrain) and I had the exact same issue that the car felt soooooo slow. Turning ESC Sport on made a world of difference and I only realized this after two weeks of owning the car. Thanks!
@@TheStraightPipes Weird that it still felt slow. My mistake then, at least in my XC60 T8 the difference was massive. Also drove on the snow with winter tires (studded). Keep up the good work and happy holidays! :-)
The_steaksauce Haha I cringed as well but this time I just felt I should explain how really easy it is to say correct 🤓 I think it’s the exact same sound for the Ö in Danish and Norwegian language as well 👍🏻
I used to always want a volvo wagon. (V70R). I love how the new ones look. Way too busy under the hood and what used to be the “radio”. We need vehicles we can operate when wearing gloves. Sweden still has winter... am i wrong?
You are right. This feels like a beta test to me for all their new shiny drive drain toys. It is good that they try something new but I would not pay that kind of money to be an early adopter.
Turbocharged, supercharged, plug-in hybrid 4 cylinder, this sounds like an endless money pit in terms of maintenance if you plan on doing anything other than leasing it.
I would really only look at the t5s for models v60, xc60 and smaller. Either you have too much going on with the car to get enough power for the weight or not enough power with the 4 cylinder turbo for the weight. So t5 XC40 is going to be a better drive than a t8 whatever. And it has less going on, so fewer things that can break.
@@dpALC8414 The question with that is reliability. I also feel ir won't feel like the true power of the reported HP with a 2 liter 4 cylinder. They're trying to replace cylinders for green boost and I don't think it can truly work.

@@benjaminsmith2287 I think its the wrong way to force people to buy electric. Brands like should keep the older engines alive. Lets see what customers actually want.

I just love Volvo's. Come to The Netherlands and see a ton of them.
Can’t wait to see a Polestar 2 review!🤞🏼
I know it's rough to test and film cars during winter in the Great White North, but honestly, for those of us who drive cars on snowy roads for 7 (or more) months of the year, I love these reviews. On the plus side, at 5:15 you get the rare test of how well can the wipers clear slush from the windshield. It's like the sunvisor test, part 2.
TheStraightPipes did a new video on my birthday 🎊 that’s a good way to start my day !
Happy birthday Celso
Thank you @TheStraightPipes y’all my favorites car reviewers keep up the grind
I think your reviews are pretty comprehensive. Similar to Doug’s quirks, but everything else car. It’s also good that you guys don’t agree all the time but don’t argue about options.

Tesla is safer tho

EXACTLY. I like the classic looks but then 3 subsystems that can fail and be a fortune to repair. No thank you.
Yep... when that goes out of warranty $$$.
You hit that nail on the head. I'll bet that drivetrain will become a money pit before 100,000 miles.
That’s why you lease this vehicle and then get off it in 2-3years. Also you only pay tax on your lease total rather than the whole vehicle.
I love the style and idea of Polestar but they always seem to fall flat when it comes to actual performance.
These guys are a bit jaded these days. 0 - 60 in 4.3 seconds is pretty impressive. Dude looked like he was gonna fall asleep.
Best part about this car? No unpainted plastic trim. 10/10
Great review! Don't worry about the cars being dirty. It's winter. You made it pretty clear with the shots of the slush hitting the car! 😄
Listening to this video with active noise cancelling headphones was a super trippy experience when you activated your concert hall mode!
Volvo THANK YOU for sticking to producing WAGONS! Most other brands don't really understand why wagons are awesome, at least not outside of Europe
Great Video guys. I'm glad we don't need winter tires in San Diego :)
Keep filming in the winter, we appreciate it
We don't have a choice!
It's obvious that is not the best car in the segment. But honestly, I don't care. The design and the attention to detail is top notch. I think that is one of the most beautiful cars that you can buy new, not just for the segment but of the whole market. I would drive this over any any other brand.
Gotta admit I love the the intro music, you gentlemen always keep it fresh

Ya I know
Great content guys! Love your reviews!
Got one, pearl white, almost full option, love it, I do have gold valve caps tho
I just bought a S60 polestar, it does have gold caps on the stems. Comes in a little pack in the glove box. And there is launch control. All you do is put it in Polestar engineered mode, and the put the brakes down and gas down all the way. Makes a big different with the launch.
That's a pretty wagon. And the yellow belts don't hurt.
Also that harlequin hoodie 😍
Awesome video! Love u guys as always!
Folding down backseat headrests. Now that’s attention to detail.
Mitcha Jankovic I’ve got a diesel V90 and the gearbox is as dim witted in that too. Just a slow responding gearbox.
I love straight pipes!
Yeah it's just you

I can't wait for the polestar 1 review
Came back to this video while helping my mum car shop and just noticed the Office Space reference 10:08
Polestar: Should we use a turbo or a supercharger?
Volvo: Why not both?
Customers: so is this car turbocharged or supercharged or some kind of hybrid?
Volvo: yes
Ferrari: neither!
@@cbatiau2528 N/A V12s are the best.
My mum always loved volvos although i was never a fan. Turns out... She was right volvos r amazing
This motor out of warranty will be such a joy to own. Only 50billion things to go wrong

Not surprised about the transmission. If I had three people pushing me around while trying to move something around I would have trouble...
The transmission in the other volvo models suck too. They are fine for comfort cruising but very sluggish for any fast driving.
Antonio Akiki yeah which is ass, since In my own opinion, every Volvo is very handsome looking, sporty even except the smaller suvs, but all their sedans and wagons have such a sporty look yet they aren’t any faster than other cars due to the transmission and all the doohickeys the engine has going on
Volvo has the best station wagon designs
Great review!
Exactly, We own an xc90 t8 and my mother bought the new X5 and she always pull on the shift lever twice...
Volvos now are so beautiful
Please mention the battery charge level in EV and PHEV reviews if you complain about performance. These PHEVs only do their *full* performance if you have a well charged battery and you are in sport mode that fully engages *both* drivetrains at the same time. This should also help the first kick from both launch and when punching the pedal during driving. You only get the electric *jerk* if the battery is charged. That also incentives gearheds to charge them up to get more power.
1:03, the 177LB-FT says GAS while it should be ELECTRIC

0:24 - Sorry guys, you guys made one mistake here - You should have put the car to ESC Sport mode (right next to the charge & hold buttons).

Turbocharged, supercharged, plug-in hybrid 4 cylinder, this sounds like an endless money pit in terms of maintenance if you plan on doing anything other than leasing it.
ldawson103 lmao the Scotty is strong with this one.
I would really only look at the t5s for models v60, xc60 and smaller. Either you have too much going on with the car to get enough power for the weight or not enough power with the 4 cylinder turbo for the weight. So t5 XC40 is going to be a better drive than a t8 whatever. And it has less going on, so fewer things that can break.
i have a xc60 t6 R design awd and im pleased with the power delivery for a mid sized suv at 5k lbs.
@@dpALC8414 The question with that is reliability. I also feel ir won't feel like the true power of the reported HP with a 2 liter 4 cylinder. They're trying to replace cylinders for green boost and I don't think it can truly work.
@@edzebes T5s and T6s suck because of turbo lag. Going only 4-cylinder was a huge downgrade.
