  • In today's video I am looking at the successor to the fabled Volvo V60 Polestar - the V60 "Polestar Engineered". However, is this just a case of badging up a lesser car, or is there something going on beneath that sharp Swedish exterior?

Those window switches aren’t Ford, they were always Volvo and other Ford companies used them in their cars. Agree about the sound system though, I experienced it in several V90s and it’s a bit disappointing. But a good looking car, seems like a competitor to the Peugeot Sport Engineered 508

15+ year old switches from a lower class manufacturer (I’m not a snob, I’ve only ever owned Fords), is not acceptable in an up market £60k flagship car. It’s just not. I’ve bought WiFi dongles that feel more premium than Ford switch gear.

I wouldn't call it over engineering. Engineering is about making things work, over engineering is like making a very intricate boot hinge mechanism to get an extra degree of opening, a lot more effort for little additional benefit. This 'everything through a screen for clean looks' isn't engineering. It's designers and marketing leading the manufacturing. It's about looking good in an advert and leaving the customer stuck with the rubbish after they buy.

The window switch thing seems to be a thing that a lot of manufacturers just seem to think has been perfected and needs no further development. Just test drove a 2021 Citroen C3, and the window swithces as well as the cruise control stalk were identical as in a 2001 Peugeot 307. I mean i noticed it, but they work well and if it's really a choice between an old physical button or just a touch screen control i'll take the 20 year old switch any day over the touchscreen madness.

I had the 2018 (2.0L) V60 Polestar for a year and had a love hate relationship with it. The carbon front splitter was a PITA, in that it almost pulled the front bumper off when driving through a suburban flood at walking pace. It also made recovery of the vehicle an 8 hour endeavour when there was a puncture and the tire sealant didn't (couldn't load it onto a low loader due to overly low, now bonded on splitter). The sheer amount of dash buttons was absolutely ridiculous. It seems those two 'features' are solved with this model, plus a little bit more grunt too. The local dealer has one in stock too, think I will take a closer look. It did get a lot of complements from the types of folk that you would want to complement and the 'boy-racer' types that you would want to ignore you did.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @markwright3161
      @markwright3161 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@lvk104 I imagine someone at Volvo wiped it down as part of the Covid procedure to prevent spread. The idea is to prevent it spreading from being on the surface. To wipe down for aesthetics sake afterwards with a microfibre towel, the towel would need independently sterilised.
The streaking is from the alcohol rapidly evaporating. Its boiling point is only around 60 degrees Celsius I believe compared to water being 100 degrees, so it will naturally evaporate faster off a surface of the same temperature, and a higher humidity (relatively common in the UK) increases the rate at which the alcohol evaporates as it's attracted to the water in the air, higher humidity means more water in the air which increases evaporation of any alcohol present (had to google that, I was thinking of a different, now known to be incorrect, reason).
I think using a microfibre towel to apply the fluid will still result in streaking because it needs to be on the surface in order sterilise it properly. Wiping on and off at the same time will not be very effective. Effective application of the sterilising agent would be like wiping a car down with an already damp/wet towel.

The T5 is half a ton lighter than the Polestar engineered so handling is better. It is no way a super car but it tramps on and in a smooth cool comfy way. The T5 has a different gear change setup. The window switches work really well and are solid.... why would you change that. The touch screen is dead easy to operate once you have owned the car for a week or two. The Dashboard can also be configured in different ways... with way more info available than what you need. It is not a replacement for the old V60 but more a replacement for the V70. The question I always ask with hybrid tech like this is - as you describe running around in electric drive only and then you want some performance, so you use all systems go- the engine kicks in and you start to use it harder- If you were using a normally powered car you'd warm it up for a mile or two, surely using an ICE engine in this way is going to increase wear and shorten its life.

If I recall correctly that's the same as the last Polestar. If that the case, then that's ridiculous!

Interesting, I have been in an S90, and I found the Bowers and Wilkins hifi to be superb, super crisp, with little to no quality loss even on higher volumes, with good bass (not too over powering). Maybe it was the audi that you listened to?

This car is now the cheapest non-lifted wagon you can purchase in the United States. The only other wagons are the Audi RS6 Wagon, the Mercedes AMG E 65 wagon, and, well, the Porsche Panamera, all of which start $20,000 more than this car. Note that I specced out a UK version that has the standard features in the US version - many of the additional options in the UK are standard in the US version, which brings the price to about $67500 (no VAT in the US). But the Climate, Seat, Lighting, Lounge, Driver assistance, Smartphone Integration, B&W Sound are already included in that base price in the US. The few options in the US are fancier paint, various luggage racks, mudflaps, child locking bits, rubberized mats, rear bumper protection, and various Bike rack things. Maybe that provides a different verdict.

Shiny black plastics are just the worst things to put in a car. It does not look premium, it looks cheap even when clean. Why do they continue to do it? And touchscreens are utterly useless as well. Also, is it just me or do all these systems suffer from terrible update rates? Not just the infotainment, but the dash as well. They all seem to be being powered by several generation old arm cpus. The loss of buttons is just a huge step backwards.

I had the older V60 Polestar with just the twincharged inline 4. I never had so many issues with a brand new car engine. I flipped it before it went out of warranty. The supercharger bypass valve assembly would fail at least yearly, and at the end the supercharger needed to be replaced. I can't imagine owning the same powertrain but with hybrid slapped on top long term. The car would be a nightmare. The only one worth owning was the inline 6 Polestar model.

I'm just a tad surprised with Jay's assessment of thIs particular Bowers and Wilkins system, which up till now has been universally praise as the benchmark in the premium segment. I was messing around recently on the V60 configurator and I too thought the colour options were a bit meh for the range but then when I looked at the Polestar I too was a bit surprised no unique colour option. But then when I looked at the 508 PSE it only has I think 3 colour options and I suppose these are cars vying for the same purchaser.

Of course that's my opinion but I really don't understand your obsession with climate controls being buttons.
My point of view is just this: you set your preferences once, the climate control does its job, if you have to modify any settings en route then it's a failure of the climate control to do its thing. It's that simple.
Therefore, always in my opinion, it makes perfect sense to do away with all the buttons and set them once and for all on a screen interface.

I don't really get the in-car entertainment options in cars these days. Volvo's Dolby Pro-Logic stereos in their higher spec V70s were best in the business 20+ years ago. If the massively expensive upgrade isn't much cop today, how is that progress? Seems too often, you pay for a fancy logo on the grille rather than a decent hi-fi experience. Similarly, the Bowers and Wilkens in my Jaguar XK looks great, but sounds average. Fortunately in that car, the V8 is all I really want to listen to :D

  • @nox6885

Maybe with the estate version the sound system sounds different, which is highly unlikely. We have an XC90 at home with the same B&W sound system and its brilliant. Other channels that have reviewed Volvo cars and spoken about the sound it provides have all been very positive. Not sure what JayEmm is on about, learn to configure the car equalizer and I'm sure you'd find a sound you prefer. Comparing B&O to a VW Golf sound system is laughable as I have a Golf 7 R and theres no comparison. Standard Volvos have always had good sound systems, from the 850s to S70s and S60s, the sound has always been some of the best. And if you got the premium sound system then even better. Love your content though. 👌🏿

"Volvo is a company that very often seems to be at odds with itself".
This is very true, but not really because of the hybrid bit. They are a "safety first" company that bothers to build cars with a gratuitous 400 HP. They build performance cars that do everything in their power to prevent you from enjoying that performance. They tout ergonomics but shove everything into a non-ergonomic touchscreen and voice interface. They claim premium but cut corners and options out the whazoo.

Aye, that's true. I love my 09 S60, but SE trim, which was the middle in terms of luxury, apparently didn't feature heated seats, powered passenger seat, premium audio, laminated side glass, sunglasses holder, rear sunblind, bixenon headlights or a heated windscreen (to be fair, none of the P2 gen came with a heated windscreen). You need an SE Lux to even get most of those features, never mind all
