- The movie story is about Pooja who grew up as an orphan girl and always dreamt of owning a house, becomes insecure when she finds out that she and her husband, Inder have to leave the apartment they rent. The twist that occurred when Inder gives her the keys of a new house proves to be double-edged, when it is revealed that he is in love with another woman, Kavita with whom he earned the money for the new apartment. While previously giving advice to her maid cheated by her husband, now Pooja becomes herself involved in a similar situation. When Inder deserts Pooja for Kavita, she chooses to leave the apartment for a women's hostel with only ₹2000 that she had when she got married. She is helped by Raj to surpass the difficulties of life as a single person, to find a job and to rely morally on herself. Raj and Pooja become good friends. Gradually, Kavita's mental instability deepens her fears of insecurity, even after Inder requests Pooja to sign the divorce papers.
Raj falls in love with Pooja and proposes to her. She refuses saying she is empty and cannot give him anything. Raj tries to persuade her saying that she cannot spend the rest of her life feeling miserable about the past and that she should try to find a new life for herself. Pooja promises to think about it.
Pooja's maid, whose only aim in life is to secure a good education for her daughter, has saved ₹1000 towards her admission fees. She finds out that her drunk husband has stolen the money. Furious, she searches for him to find him in the arms of his lover after spending all the money. She kills him and goes to the police station and confesses her crime. Worried about her daughter, she calls Pooja who promises to take care of the daughter.
After the insistence of Kavita's mother and her personal doctor, Pooja personally assures Kavita that she is not interested in Inder any more. However, Pooja's attitude only convinces Kavita that breaking Pooja's marriage was a mistake. To escape from her feeling of guilt and insecurity, she breaks-up with Inder. The latter tries to revive his relation with Pooja, but is rejected.
Pooja continues to live with her maid's daughter and refuses to marry Raj saying that she has found a new meaning to life in being independent and being a mother to the child and marrying Raj will only weaken her.

The end part where she says “companionship will make me weak” had me in tears. And I find the courage to become a single mother.

Raj Kiran is the most underappreciated element of this film, he gives such a beautifully layered and heartrending perfomance as a struggling ghazal singer, falling for an unrequited love & his chemistry with Shabana Azmi is slam dunk brilliant

For the songs and Raj Kiran - I can watch this gem again n again . Kulbhushan Kharbanda character was the hardest one to portray because a character we are bound to hate but still he has to express his agony , shamelessness and uncomfortability to make the character more organic to us .

Highlight of the film: the 'arth'~ful and poignant lyrics of Kaifi Azmi which are in complete empathy with the 'kaifiyat' (state of mind) of the protagonist Pooja.
There is more to understand than to watch in this movie. I loved the simplicity of the portrayal of a beautiful story of self love and self respect. Why they don't make such movies anymore?

My mom always spoke highly of this movie, so today I finally took some time to watch it and I must add she isn't wrong. Loved the movie, way ahead of it's time and era. All the actors, actresses were phenomenal all through out. Shabana Azmi Ji beautiful,elegant and spell binding acting. And last but not the least the songs sung by Late Jagjit Singh Ji are just absolutely beautiful. Thank you Mom for the suggestion.

When she counter questions him in the end , he should have been left speechless shamed and dropped his head and unable to answer. The answer was obvious.
But with him saying "no" openly spoilt the climax. If he openly said "no" why did he go back to her ? He should have been unable to give that obvious answer.
All three were the right choice for their roles. Qudos to the producers and directors.

So relevant, so much shining actors-all of them! Loved Raj and his positivity. Such strong female characters and brilliant performances by Shabana and Smita and can not forget Rohini.
The essence of the entire movie is at the end 1:43:20. when Shabana ask him a counter question and then her reply after his. That's the message of the movie. A women's courage and her independent choice making.

The third woman played by Rohini Hattangadi is a subtle representation of one more alternative...but remains almost ignored...the climax, where Smita Patil asks Kulbhushan to leave and Shabana also decides not to accept him, shows true respect for self esteem 👍👍
It's indeed a sad truth as portrayed in movie that how just due to an undeserving partner the other one gets damaged forever even pushing away the worthy love. That's so painful to watch.

I just watched this movie and I'm thinking what a beautiful time that was nd how meaningful subjects were made
heartbreaking when you're true to your love and the betrayal hurts too sharp to come in terms with, In the end you only realize to be self loving more than anyone else is the vital most love of life. Shabana ji is so graceful.

I had only heard of Shabana Azmi, but watching her in a film, that too like Arth is nothing sort of a wonderful experience... I would just say that this movie should be watched for at least just one scene at 1:43:15, in a so called progressive 21st century where movies like Animal earns thosand of crores it is so nice to realise that back in 80s something like Arth was made... Kudos to everyone involved in the making of this gem of a film...

Raj Kiran has a nice and understanding role. He seems to be too cute and in love. Never have I seen Raj Kiran so handsome and chubby. Especially in the climax scene.

My request to Bhatt Saab is that, after this many years, he release the film without any scenes deleted. As he expressed in an interview that Smita has given true meaning to the "other lady" and performed more intensely than he ever imagined and was ready to do so without any payment because the story resonated with her. The world deserves to see the story with impact as it was written and performed. It can be the best tribute to Smita Patil Ji, more than any award.

Shabana ji and Kulbhushan jis raw acting in Arth and the movie itself is still nothing short of a masterpiece. They are both seen together very shortly in JP Duttas Umrao Jaan remake when she comes to take Umrao to Sheesh Mahal and you would never tell that almost 40 years ago now they created such heart wrenching drama together. Life really is so strange. The way Inder broke 7 years of marriage so easily and ignored Pooja as something irrelevant in this song, Shabana had the upper hand and ignored Kulbhushan who had a minute irrelevant role in Umrao. Almost as though life reached full circle

I am surprised Rohini Hattangdi accepted this small role. An NSD grad...and a great talent. The role is significant in the movie but not enough to do justice to her talent. Regardless she did an impeccable job of it. Also amazing is the little girl. My heart broke for her. There must be a million of them in this world 🥺

I would have loved to see Deepti Naval in this role, especially in this song. I get tears in my eyes whenever I see the sadness in her beautifully expressive face in "kahaan se aaye badra" from Chashme Baddoor.

mahesh bhatt has shown his own story where he was live in relationship wit parveen bhabhi who used to spend money on him while his english wife kiran was frustrated & he showed how parveen used to get frustrated angry psychatrically mad on him during their relation.
