- Nima and Balraj Kohli are happily married middle aged couple, living in rich neighborhood of Pune. They have two boys, elder Sagar and younger Babbu. Things seem to go smoothly and Sagar falls in love with medico Sarita who easily gains the approval of Sagar's parents. Slowly it is revealed that Nima was Balraj's second wife and not actually the biological mother of Sagar. Balraj was the husband of Sharada, the elder sister of Nima. When Nima lost her husband in an accident, immediately after her marriage, shocked Sharada falls off the stairs, damaging her head. She had been in a mental institute since 14 years. As Balraj had no one to manage his household in the absence of Sharada, Nima started to look after Balraj and seven year old Sagar. Seven years after the accident, Sharada and Nima's father, hopeless of Sharada's recovery, convinces Balraj and Nima to get married.
In present day Sharada gets hit on her head by an inmate of mental institution and goes into coma. Balraj along with Sagar goes to Delhi to finalise Sagar's marriage with Sarita. In Mumbai, Sharada suddenly comes out of the coma and thinks that she woke after the initial accident 14 years back. The doctor tells her that she had been in a coma and doesn't reveal the fact that Balraj and Nima are now married. Confused, Sharada escapes hospital and comes home. By the time, Nima gets the information from doctor and arranges everything as it was 14 years before. She sends her young son to stay with Sarita and makes herself up like a widow, as her sister knew.
Sharada comes home and feels happy to see everything was same as before. After some time Balraj returns with good news of his son's engagement. He is happy to see Sharada recovered but feels sad to see Nima in a widow's attire. They maintain things in that way for some time for fear that Sharada will fall ill again if she knows the truth.
But, Nima's son Babbu comes home from Sarita's hostel, making everyone reveal the truth to Sharada. Sharada is shocked and loses consciousness. When she regains consciousness she acts crazy and violent. Sarita, while trying to pacify her, comes to know that Sharada was just acting crazy to be put away permanently from her sister's life. She makes Sarita promise not to tell anyone and she does same with the doctor. Thinking that she again lost her mind, saddened Nima and Balraj resume their normal life.

Shardas's sacrifice. Man! This is what we call true Love. Isn't? So selfless. Sadly such love doesn't exist in real life and if it does, cases must be rare.
To every mother her son is always a savera. I was also the same to my maa whenever she sang that song. Though she had left me19 yrs ago but still maa you are not Basera for me. I love you very much and you will always be my savera till the last breath of my life.
Madhubala, Nutan, Hema Malini, Madhuri Dixit are the the supposed super beauties of bollywood, for me its Rakhee Gulzar she looks so pure and elegant even without makeup.
Now shes around 75, still she looks so divine.

The most interesting thing abt the script is that it is nobody's fault in the movie that things turned out in this way, yet one of them hs to make a sacrifice to ensure that the rest of them remain happy...what a script, cast and direction 👍
I think Nima should have made the sacrifice!!! Poor Sharada has suffered a lot! She too deserves some Happiness
True..maybe Nima would have gone away with her father and son, away frm Sharda's world, but before that Sharda came to know of the truth due to Babboo's innocence. So Sharda took the decision first. And maybe she would not have got the same love from her husband which any wife would have expected because now she felt like an outsider in their world. Sab writer ke hisaab se hai...😀

Such a heart wrenching movie. How most humans only think of themselves..n some are so selfless..as far as their happiness was concerned the whole family was bothered n put up a face of being sad for Sharda, her husband, sister n even father.whereas the truth is they were actually relieved, to see her go back to her normal self n they resuming their normal lives..so so sad..the truth painted in such a lively way..

I'm quite surprised that people hating Rekhaji and Shashi Kapoor's character. His wife was sick for 14 years. It's quite a long time. They have the right of having normal and happy life. Everyone has sympathy for sick people. This is great. But Rekhaji's character also gone through hell. She almost lost everything by one night. She tried to pretend everything is ok while couldn't even meet her little kid. Whatever Sarda( Rakhiji) didn't deserve this pathetic ending at least she could live in separate house with her son and daughter in law.
Yeah, u r just right!!! I have been kept thinking since many yrs the same...
But we can guess that they wanted to make the climax most heartrending.
& if Sharada wanted to take away her son and son-in-law with her...
She also didn't want Purnim a to know the fact that her sister had came back... evanchually disturbing their married life of last 14 years...

Great sacrifice of rakhee for her sister... Great movie...I think there will hardly be a sister who will sacrifice so much for her sister.
Rakhi realised her husband and her son no longer love her...That was the reason she left all behind...means where is love n care, that place is good to live.
And nobody should sacrifice her own life for others. I would have never forgiven myself, if my sister would have sacrificed herself for me. It's a huge burden to live with!
Rakhi has a huge amount of self respect . Her son, her sister and her husband betrayed her. She was left out. Her sister was behaving that she was coming in between her husband and her. In fact Rekha was feeling uncomfortable instead of feeling sorry or guilty. The way she cries in the bedroom when Rakhi is with her husband is more disgusting. She snatched her life and is acting as if her sister did something wrong to her. Her son was feeling extremely uneasy. These things would have murdered her. Her own son has betrayed her. Horrible movie. Instead of living with people who don't want her, she chose to live alone.

This impeccable film has topped all of the films so far. Almost through every moment, the inclination, in every sense it means, was towards everything and everyone else but her, particularly as the interval resumed. Obvious and not wrong. And one thing to be noted is that it ain't a question of "right" or "wrong". Appallingly, as the end is closer, all that she personified is beyond the bounds that one could imagine in a lifetime. A small opening could be enough to undo it all again and never feel complete, which is exactly where her call left a powerful impact on the spectator ions that we are. Being a little bit open and subtle, it's about realizing the tussle it is to think anything is strictly this or that. The sayings like "If this wouldn't happen..." and "If that wouldn't exist..." can stay calm for a while. The thing is, consider the "baseline" of the situation is exactly that, at least for as long as a film runs. Everything, event-to-event, as the storyline goes, doesn't have to be "likeable" and "realistic" "enough". At the end of the day, it comes down to how we take it to be. There's an array of learning points and themes at every possible instant of the film.
I love this movie
I have seen this movie in 1986 in an open cinema of Nasik's Air Force Camp. After seeing this movie memories refreshed. 😭😭😭 How quickly time has passed 😭😭😭. If some logics are left out, then the film has turned out to be very good. This picture can be seen sitting with the whole family.

Shashi Kapoor missing her and the moment she is better,she is a PROBLEM. sister doesn't go to see her at all but later pretends so much Love. It feels Fake. How about telling elder sister the truth. Even husband now dsnt love her. This is not a good end to send her to mental hospital. No one is on rakhi's side. She fell sick. It is not her fault. But waking up is treated this way...then they should have let her die.
Its not fake... its true love swinging between past and present...
