Nandita Das stands heads and shoulders among today's actors, directors and now producers (new release Zwigato), though keep in mind that her first film was FIRE in 1996. She was doing theater and especially meaningful street theater since the late 1980's.

Mahinder and Sudha' pain at the end made me cry but I was glad that she had remarried and was not portrayed as the perpetual woman pining for her lost life. Her moving on was the best part of the film.
When shashi kapoor understood its Mahendra his half hearted smile told that she didn't moved on , first it was Maya in the earlier marriage now its Mahendra... that's the complexities of life.
No....Use move on nahi krna chahiye tha.....is se mere dil ko dukh hua.....kyu ki mene apni gf ko promise kiya tha ki me shadi nahi kruga aur mene shadi nahi ki.....I'm now 37....but she moved on......she is married and living in England now...... after watching the end....it's 12.10 AM midnight and I'm crying badly.......love hurts!!!

The saddest of life is to be lonely, without a friend, companion... and every individual at one point has to experience this phase!! Ijaazat captures the pain of loneliness beautifully 😌🙏
I m experiencing that phase now, preparing for govt exam, searching for myself, my importance of existence in this world, by watching old movies, at the age of 28, after taking a break from shitty jobs, learning a lot about the life seriously, loving these moments, days, understanding the present complexity of the society.
It's been such a long time I have seen the movie and still cannot get over it. Despite of being mature and sensible adults, how easily we loose sight between right and wrong. How easily the depth of our sorrow consumes us. How impossible it becomes to walk back into the lives that we once took for granted. It's only a matter of moments that changes everything forever. And you find yourself sitting in a waiting room for your turn. This movie is what life is all about. Love, trust, loneliness, innocence, heartbreak, loss, grief, hope.
This movie should have got Oscar for best film, best director, best actor, best actress, best actress in a supporting role and for best dialogues at least. Music of this film is just from heavens. Gulzarji I just worship you for making this movie.
Sudha... this character z simple yet extraordinary. She loved Mohinder wd utmost respect n loyality but wen he made a mockery of it wd his toxic gf,Sudha ws courageous enough to leave him in a dignified manner. I'm happy that she has now found a husband who z equally devoted n caring as her own self! Rekhaji has done full justice to this character... and Shashiji's smile towards d end... lovely!
"Toxic Gf" So truly said.. dnt know abt all bt the comments i went through were mostly lenient towards that crap girl or atleast sympathetic directly or indirectly. Just immature or ... dnt know wat to say ..
agree. maya's character is toxic. she kept mahendra in his life for entertainment. and didnt respected the dignity of married life. mahendra's character is somewhat lost. he lost diamond for some cheap fake jewelry. he should have left maya long ago on her own.
This film always remains my favourite for its authenticity, emotional resonance, poetic songs and timeless appeal. A cult classic !! If you’ve ever loved, lost, or found yourself standing at the crossroads of past and present, this movie will feel like home !!
*SPOILER ALERT* I can totally resonate with everyone in the comments section here. I stumbled upon this movie only because I was intrigued by listening the song "Choti si kahani se". I'm glad I decided to watch it. This movie is indeed a gem. Such great intelligent, mature characters, so beautifully written and acted. The pain started to creep in from the moment Maya got involved in the accident. Tears started shedding when Shashi Kapoor identified who Naseer was and smiled at him 😩 This is one of those rare movies where everyone is nice to everyone else. They are sensitive, vulnerable, sensible, empathetic, confused. The hidden villain here is feelings, broken communication and some lost moments. Perfect melancholy. ❤️
I was so touched by the blessings Sudha receives from Mahen. A gem of a movie if you have a heart and realize you can never forget the last five minutes of the film. The last five minutes are so much painful for me......... I will always remember this movie until my death...
Please translate for me the last five minutes please,I don't speak Hindi but the movie and music I really love.So much colours just beautiful.Repect the culture.
Couldn't stop my tears within these 5 minutes. Speechless situation when he came to know that sudha got married again whereas he was planning to rejoin as a life partner
Very soulfully expressed your feelings. Similarly, I suggest you to spare only just 5 minute to see railway station climax of movie ' Anupama' (1967). You will able to realize the pain of a lonely, widowed father when a daughter leaves him to join her beloved for marriage. This was also a heart touching ending presented by director Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
Really loved this movie. It reminded me of "A marriage story" that won the Oscars in various categories in 2020. I'm sure this movie would have made a mark as well. I was living through with the characters.
Right . Abhi ke to bjp, rss ka propogenda chalate h uska ex adhipurash, Kashmir files, kerala story h . Cinema ko bhi nahi chhod rhe aaj ke . Third class standard ho gya h . Phle beautiful writer, director, singers, actors Hua krte the
What a film!!! As a child and then teenager, I found all of Gulzar Saab's movies 'Aandhi' 'Mausam' 'Ijaazat' boring. I couldn't stand even the songs featured on Chitrahar. But as an adult, I can see those movies repeatedly and never get bored. The play of human emotions is amazing, which only writers can see and portray so sensitively.
Long back, we used to have a FM radio... We had no TV then.... I heard the whole film in the radio by keeping the radio in TV mode.... Years have passed... We got TV too... But, I didn't watch this film in TV yet.. Finally, I have watched it today... What a film....m just speechless.... While watching the last few minutes... Like, from the scene where Shashi Kapoor enters to the last scene where Naseeruddin Shah stands helplessly.... It was very very emotional..... I was simply crying...!
Beautiful movie. Brilliant acting by both naseer and rekha. This movie teaches us many things. But one thing that stood with me is that in life, it's never easy to make choices but sometimes we create more problems by not making the necessary choices which ultimately leads us to the pathway of unending pain, agony and repentance.
This is one of the best love story of Bollywood. A master piece. Gulzar, RD, Naseer Sahab, Rekha. Sensitive dialogues, super screenplay every thing so perfect. If u have a heart u will never forget the last 10 minutes of this film.
I'm 30 years old by now. I found this movie boring during my teenage days whenever it was telecasted on TV. But now I am able to understand the depth and values of the characters played in this movie. Late 80's and early 90's movies were also good as today's.
Same for me. Saturday evening with these kind of film was really boring for us. Farooq Sheikh, Deepti Naval, Amol Palekar, Smita Patil were beyond our radar. Then action movie was preferred by me. But now I can really enjoy these parallel movies and prefer to those mainstream movies.
Yes, he should have never lied to her. And he shouldn't have let the other girl kiss him and be playful or with or be too close to him. The other girl was immature and didn't respect his relationship with another woman.
Today i watched it for 15th time in last 7 years , the begining is beautiful with the song chhoti si kahani se , superb location , train in rain , valleys , what a direction and music , unmatched script , real masterpeice
Watching this on the day the movie completed 35 years. 35 years of this gem... Every word, every beat, every single expression in this film is a gem. Can't make another one like this. Long live Gulzar Sahab.
You love someone.. And at the same time hate someone for having an affair.. And again keep trying to love someone.. It's wonderful the way Rekhaji was able to convey all these emotions so flawlessly, with such elegance..
This is not a film. This is a poem which we are fortunate enough to visualize with these extraordinary performance of Nasiruddin sir and Rekha mam plus brilliant performance of Anuradha patel. This movie feels like soft candle burning with pain and glory😢
The end is so satisfying. As someone said in an online review of the movie, "Living well is the best revenge...but upgrading to The Shash has got to be even better!" :D Plus the smirk that Shashi Kapoor gives Naseer's character...wah wah.
I'm 22 & this movie taught me something very early i thought. it will be remain with me for some days. the character of mehen & his unconditional love for sudha & Maya totally unmatchable. it inspire me to be man like him.✨
I love everything that Gulzar sahab has done. I think Ijazat is the epic of all his work and it fulfilled my desire to the point that I watched it in 7 hours, rewinding each dialogue 3, 4 times not to miss anything at all it’s like looking at a painting in a gallery. The last scene where Naseer sab is left alone on the platform summarizes the story of our lives. Loneliness defined in the most pinching way. The editing of the movie keeps you engaged and the audience is waiting for the next part to get answers for their questions. I can’t stop writing about this film. It’s the best thing produced by the Indian film industry. Masterpiece!
The way Naseer's eyes, his face and his whole body language changes when he realizes that Rekha has married... That was the moment when the death of something inside him was so palpable... Its almost like you can touch it...

Just mind-blowing... Superbly written script, the supreme acting of Naseeruddin Shah, his beloved Maya and off course Rekha made this movie a masterpiece. Indeed, this is called a film...lovely 👌👍
Aisa sirf aur sirf Gulzar sahab hi kr sakte hain... Relationships ko itni gracefully dikhana.. 3 log 3no mein pyaar bahut pyaar aur pain bhi 3no ko hi mila..jb do log pyaar mein ho aur ek move on ho jaye life mein toh dusra insaan kitne pain aur kitna suffer krta hai aur kaise mohinder apni dono responsibilities nibhata hai.. Maya ko pain se nikalne ki puri koshish krta hai.. The movie is so amazing ki bss dekhte rho.. Ek ek scene ek ek dialogue.. Ufff... Amazing ❤❤ loved it❤❤
Two decades ago, ‘Izaazat’ was just another film to my 20-year-old self. I used to get bored and would wonder why my parents liked this movie. But now, after 25 years, its profound message resonates with me on a deeper level. The delicate dance of love and loss portrayed by Naseeruddin Shah and Rekha now mirrors my own experiences with life’s intricate relationships. It’s a testament to the film’s timeless relevance and its ability to grow with us, teaching us the value of communication and presence in our most cherished bonds.”
Moral of the story, just because you were honest about a gf you have doesn't mean you continue to suffocate your wife with your past. The character of Nasser and Maya though in love never understood how they affected the character of Rekha as a wife. She did right by leaving him.
Exactly and in 80's it's very difficult to potray the role of rekha and it was practical and best decisions , but I never understand mohinder because what he needed maya or sudha I didn't understand and also he never want to leave his past so he ruined his relationship
I have fallen in love with this movie...it is so beautiful. We are ought to owe respect to great actor like Naseeruddin Ji and Rekha ji. In each movie I see them ,they are just at the top of the acting hemisphere. They have created an another world where we can pay them by our pity gratitude. They are so marvellous.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I agree.. and also Anuradha ji as Maya is also a character to remember. She has done an amazing job. And the way she speaks is just so sweet and lovable.
@@barshavishwaqarma8737 Yes. You are correct. Anuradha Patel did a great job in this movie. Talent is in her genes. Not to forget, that she is the granddaughter of the legendary actor Dadamuni Ashok Kumar ji, legendary Kishore Da is her grand uncle, and singer Amit Kumar ji is her uncle.
You need a Classic Story first to make a Classic Movie! This is based on Bengali Author Subodh Ghosh's Jotugriha! Gulzar kept the essence intact with his poetic touch. I can't think of anyone else in place of Rekha & Naseeruddin ! and Sashi Kapoor with that parting smile .....Don't understand how someone can dislike this masterpiece?

People call Yash Chopra, an epitome of Ramance, but I feel no one can underline Romance better than Gulzar Saheb. It's far better than Silsila. Must watch movie.
Lovely movie. Practical advice to men : move on. Male character was in love with two women. People say it's a mistake. Yes, maybe. But that's why it's a mistake. It happened unknowingly. He tried his best to keep Maya away. Maya wanted a child from him and asked him to marry Sudha. Sudha asked him to marry Maya. Both of them acted cool with him. Maya attempted suicide and Sudha mentioned her mother's suicide if they didn't get married. The women thoroughly confused him as well . When I say 'women' , I also mean to say the 2 situations. Nothing against women. This film is so lovely because it is real. That's how men and women are. Male character even told Sudha to not think about past and to move ahead and he wanted help to do that . But coming back to practical advice ...to all the broken hearts on TH-cam!....move on...take a baby step. It takes lot of time but it will heal. It will heal if one doesn't keep photo of ex gf or ex wife in the wallet ! Be practical ...get re-married like Sudha...and put in pics of little kids. Or maybe climb Everest . Both are fine. Give yourself a goal , that's important. Fantastic movie !
Mahendra says in the end to Sudha that he was only helping her at that time but in real he was not only helping her but also cheating her at that time. He lied in the end and sudha did the right thing by leaving him
Sorry to bother you, Apologize.. But When you feel the same thing in your life that's how painfull when you have same amount of love for such two person. Its hard to choose ... And also control your emotions. Can't be describe what it feels like.....
@@anupkhobragade3939 A person can never love two persons at a same time. If he is claiming to love two persons at a same time then it is not love, it is lust. A person who loves his partner truly would never be confused between two persons. He would choose his partner without giving a thought to it. The thing is he never loved sudha he was just using her to forget his gf.
@@humerashaikh8839 felt the same way...he was honest at first when he told everything about himself. After marriage also he was honest but after his birthday he tried to hide and Sudha got suspicious. And the deciding moment was when Sudha was reluctant to call Maya home then he should have told his motive behind this. He should have taken care of his wife first then the rest. Also, there were some loopholes in the plot. But still a better movie than most current movies.
I haven't seen this movie earlier in my young age. But today I realise what a miss it was then. Now I am 56 yrs. old, but while watching this I found myself in a very sacredly romantic feelings.

I'm happy that she has now found a husband who z equally devoted n caring as her own self! Rekhaji has done full justice to this character... and Shashiji's smile towards d end... lovely!

"Toxic Gf"
So truly said.. dnt know abt all bt the comments i went through were mostly lenient towards that crap girl or atleast sympathetic directly or indirectly.
Shashi's entry awesome...Shashi captured our heart
Shashi kapoor is such a natural actor
he looks so handsome in that suit
each dialogue is soo deep and touching...like poetry

This film always remains my favourite for its authenticity, emotional resonance, poetic songs and timeless appeal. A cult classic !!
If you’ve ever loved, lost, or found yourself standing at the crossroads of past and present, this movie will feel like home !!
*SPOILER ALERT*
I can totally resonate with everyone in the comments section here.
Tears started shedding when Shashi Kapoor identified who Naseer was and smiled at him 😩
This is one of those rare movies where everyone is nice to everyone else. They are sensitive, vulnerable, sensible, empathetic, confused. The hidden villain here is feelings, broken communication and some lost moments. Perfect melancholy. ❤️

This is what happens when we take good people for granted and expect them to stick around regardless the abuse we put them through.
Yes, he should have never lied to her. And he shouldn't have let the other girl kiss him and be playful or with or be too close to him. The other girl was immature and didn't respect his relationship with another woman.
