  • The artists of the Art Nouveau period broke new ground back then. Away from the prevailing compulsion to cling permanently to the old. Adia meets up with Alexa Brauner (art historian and city guide) to explore Viennese Art Nouveau in this episode of VIENNA/NOW Tours.

#1 Zum Schwarzen Kameel: The Schwarze Kameel is Vienna's oldest trendy restaurant. The restaurant is known for its hearty Viennese cuisine.

#2 Engelapotheke (Pharmacy): A pharmacy as a tourist attraction? Certainly, if you're looking for traces of Art Nouveau in Vienna! The story of the Angel Pharmacy reaches back into the 16th century. In 1902, after several relocations, the pharmacy moved into its present home in a typical Art Nouveau building that is still important today.

#3 Art Nouveau Toilet: The first and by far the most beautiful of the city's underground public lavatories built in the Art Nouveau style.
#4 Austrian Post Savings Bank: The Imperial-Royal Post Office Savings Bank was built between 1904 and 1912 by Otto Wagner, one of the most eminent architects of the beginning of the twentieth century.

#5 Secession: In 1897, Gustav Klimt and a number of other artists quit the conservative Künstlerhaus and founded a new art association called the Secession. The building of the same name was completed in 1898.

#6 Majolikahaus: A true Art Nouveau gem. This house was designed by Otto Wagner on Linke Wienzeile.

#7 Café Rüdigerhof: The Rüdigerhof owes its name to Field Marshal Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg and its appearance to the architect Oskar Marmorek. This student of Otto Wagner had the Rüdigerhof built in 1902 and it became an important Art Nouveau building with its many typical designs and decorations.

Good tour. I miss seeing Art Nouveau architecture in London. It didn’t happen here in the same way as it did on the continent

You missed the church of St. Leopold which is arguably the most impressive Art Nouveau building in Vienna.

I think you guys missed some masterpieces in Vienna... the butterflies house, the church of St. Leopold, the Anker Clock, Karlsplatz...

I loved the tour and would love to see more details of the inside of the buildings, if they are still art nouveau.
