Early Fuyu Persimmon Harvest: Tips for Picking and Enjoying

- Time for the persimmon harvest!!
Persimmons are one of my favorite fruits: no acid, pure sugar. They are delicious fresh, baked into cakes and quick breads, dried, and frozen (eat them with a spoon like sorbet!). Here are some of my tips for harvesting and enjoying this decadent late-season fruit.
Asian persimmons are self-fertile and some varieties tend to produce heavily on alternating years. They grow in zones 7-11.
Early Fuyu Persimmon is a non-astringent persimmon.

We have been planting persimmons - both Asian and American varieties - in the new orchard gardens around our farm. They are just tiny guys now, and it will be a while before we see any fruit. So, for the next several years, we will simply enjoy their beauty (and they are quite beautiful little trees!). Looking forward to the days when we have wonderful harvests like yours!

Last year I got about 100+ fruits but this year I got so little. Thanks for the video, now I know why I got so little this year.

I tried my first persimmon about four years ago. It's now one of my favorite fruits. I've been buying a box full yearly from a no spray grower in my area. Love 'em and they dehydrate really well too, for preserving.
I so appreciate the knowledge you are sharing! I am in northwest Washington State and am slowly planting my own food forest.
Major suggestion, build an expandable Greenhouse and start growing some citrus fruit inside
I currently have 2 fuyu persimmon trees growing here in MA zone 6b. This year one of my fruit finally bear 1 fruit 😂
It took A LOT of trials and my tree death to find the ideal variety and location, but it was all worth it.
That experience is a wonderful way to appreciate the tree, life, and the fruit.
I have never had a persimmon, live in zone 5, but they look beautiful! What a blessed community around you to have your farmstand.

Planted a Fuyu this year. Probably 3 or more years till first harvest but Looking forward to it.
I think you don’t have to wait 3 years, I planted two trees and one of them bear fruits just one year after I planted them.

I have a massive fuyu in my yard. This must be her big year because there are hundreds of fruit. It’s unbelievable. Thanks for video. I’m not sure when to pull them!

FYI Stark Bros has varieties on Asian persimmons that can be grown in zone 6.
I would love to hear from folks who are growing them on how they actually do because I’ve heard that they can have die back in a cold winter. I have a hybrid Persimmon that is supposed to be Hardy to 6, but it is semi astringent

I have an American Persimmon, Meader. American Persimmons need a pollinater, and my male died. Until I can replace my male, no fruit. Males are hard to find. Many nurseries don't sell the males, only unsexed seedlings, or sell out very early. Still looking to replace him. I should have went with an Asian Persimmon in the first place, sigh...

I don’t have a Jiro. If I had space I would have another variety or two for sure!
Thank you for the video. My persimmon tree has fruit for the first time this year. Yay....7 persimmons. LOL. My question is, do they ripen better on the tree or does it make any difference? I don't want my 7 to fall victims to wildlife.
Folks say they are tastier after the first frost, but once the squirrels and birds start pecking the ones high up at the tree I pick them all. They soften up quite nicely on the counter
"Victim"? It won't be long before you enjoy sharing your bounty with many of your widlife neighbors.
