Once upon a time when we lived in the country when my Dad was logging and my mom was anything that needed to be done and a wife she loved persimmon's and would stand at the trees to eat them, she would then bake a bread using them (on the lines of banana bread) which we had as toast in am or even as a treat at night. Try googling for a recipe for persimmon bread. You live it!

I've always heard they were gross. When James mentioned them on his channel I looked them up from other gardeners they weren't recommended. Ive never seen them at stores here in Texas. I wanna try one now to see for myself
@@ikeshia1981 I think it probably depends on how ripe they are. If they aren't ripe enough they don't really taste like anything I find, but when they are ripe they are the perfect sweetness. This time of year is the only time they're in grocery stores here, but I live in Ontario, Canada, so I'm not sure about Texas! But definitely try them if you find them! 🙃
My Korean friend started feeding me her different kind of foods .I got a report from the doctor to eat as close to fresh as i could l then found James online . This is what turned me on to Organic farming . I love all her persimmons ,and Kim chi ,sushi dishes ,they were delicious. And my tummy is very happy no problems. So the food forest is best for me .

They freeze really well too! I have persimmons all year, they’re delicious from the freezer. Very sorbet-like if you eat them frozen, or they’re jelly-like if you defrost them.
Persimmon fudge is unbelievably good. I don't know how to make it but buy it every year from the little country stores that make it. It is really good.

I was raised in southeast rural Indiana. My grandparents had a Grove of seedless persimmons, orange in color. She would make up the best persimmon pudding and persimmon Jam. She would make pulp and freezer and we enjoyed Persimmons year round, delicious...

That little white film on the persimmon is called biofilm, it's a layer of beneficial bacteria and their waste, it essentially blocks harmful bacteria or fungi, also makes it less appetizing to bugs, so yes! It very much so helps protect it from pests
Persimmons and paw paws- that's exactly what I thought. Last fall I planted a Meader persimmon and a serviceberry, thinking they could mostly look after themselves. I attempted to plant paw paws a few years earlier, from free seedlings, but they didn't take. Now I find one seed planted itself and next fall I'll be planting another paw paw (from a nursery) for the cross pollination. They are a bit needier than the persimmon and serviceberry, but I'm gradually stepping up.
It's my understanding that they are traditionally pressed and dehydrated to preserve. I have a family member that works for Mitsubishi Electric... she has connections... 😉. You can try this... Dehydrate them like an apricot and cut them into supper tiny little cubes, then mix with sweetened coconut flakes (about 1 part persimmon to 3 parts coconut) then add enough sweetened condensed milk to hold the mixture together into a ball. You then roll the sticky 1" balls in a crushed walnut or pecan and refrigerate. They are my kids favorite Christmas treat. You can substitute papaya or apricot in a pinch. Hope this helps you get some longer life out of your harvest. 💚

My family loves to eat Fuyu Persimmons and every Fall, we buy a box every 2 weeks. Now, I bought the Nikita's Gift and the Fuyu Persimmon trees. I planted the baby trees last Summer. Will have to wait a few years for the fruit to produce. But I am excited. I'm also thinking of getting the PawPaw trees too.
My Nakitas Gift is 6 years old. It is loaded with fruit. I have picked a few to ripen inside by covering with newspaper. I live in Media Pa and we have not had a killing frost yet. I am still picking orange paruche tomatoes
There are two ways to turn the stringent persimmons into edible ones, 1) put them in a container sitting on a bed of any alcohol ( I personally like white whine for this)and seal the container with cling film. They will turn sweet in about 3 to 5 days. 2) peal the skin and hung them outside similar to garlic or onions. The persimmons turn sweet and become preserved fruits.
You can take either variety when they are close to ripe and put them whole, in the freezer overnight. Next day thaw out in a big bowl of fresh water. Dry off and eat. Sweet as honey!! The key is the "natural frost". 🍯🐝🐻

when i lived near a Korean market, i used to buy dried persimmons. they were covered with a white fungus, a little tough to eat but they were more or less to eat like candy. i bought one here in the market and it cost $2.00 apiece. i left it out on the counter for 2 weeks and then friged it for a week and it was sooo good. cp. ps. hey, tuck!

persimmon😋there’s a couple of persimmon trees in next to the France pear tree in my grandparents backyard .in northern Japan,persimmons are astringent they spray it with shochu and place them in huge ziploc bags and wait for days till it gets sweet,some hang them dry
The astringent persimmons are best dried. Peel the skin off and hang them somewhere with light wind or good air circulation. They’re called hoshigaki in Japanese. They’re a delicacy, a natural sweetness, and a gift from Mother Nature.

We always went out picked wild ones to cut seeds and see if knife spoon fork to predict the winter. Old Ozarks folk ways . Didn’t eat them so bitter . Nice info lots wild ones here. Ya we have wild paw paws too ... but don’t know much about eating these things. It’s good to know in these times. White tale deer love them lol
My mom had an Asia Persimmon and it was like eating candy... just so delicious. I lived in a house with an American Persimmon and would make persimmon walnut cookies... those were good too. Now I want to plant a persimmon!😋

Persimmons are extremely delicious & everyone needs to try some! If they are available where you live- buy the one that looks like a slightly squashed down tomato (the Fuyu-asian) very orange & still firm (like a 'green' tomato just about to turn red in your hand) it will taste like a cinnamon-spiced peach with a hint of pumpkin. If you buy the 'American' it is VERY BITTER to eat raw- it is not pleasant! I have no idea why James described it as a cucumber taste unless the hybrid has lost all its original flavor in favor of a compromise. They are about 60 cents each in stores here (likely Meijer & Kroger, for sure, but i am not sure whatever other supermarkets in various locations)

I'm in Zone 5, I think the hybrid isn't hardy enough if it can only handle -10F. We typically get that cold every year, even -20F can happen on cold winters.
I cut up my ripe persimmons, and freeze them in ice cube trays. We had too many to eat. I then would defrost them in the refrigerator and put them in my overnight oats. Heaven in a bowl.
I was just given my first asian persimmon tonight. I tried my first stringent persimmon about 2 weeks ago and only one side was soft and sweet (the rest almost choked me out it was so drying). Good to know it grows well in zone 7 and something I can reap from in November even December 😊🍅

Jaime, the Hachya, Giombo and Saijo persimmons are also Asian varieties which are also an astringent type.
We peel them and freeze then in small containers. Eat frozen or thawed.
