    I cannot imagine this being good for the cartilage between your vertebrae either. My mother got a slipped disk back in the late 80s from doing cashier work, which was this same rotational motion.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you! I suffer with low back issues and had a discectomy spring 2019. Since then I’ve been doing very light low back strengthening exercises and yesterday I was at the gym and I did some torso rotations. I am in a lot of pain right now and I’m so scared that I reaggravated my back. I’ll never do Torso rotations again! I’m so happy I found this video because I know it was the torso rotations that aggravated my back to be in so much pain. I’m trying to get in the best shape of my life right now and it’s so frustrating when you have a paperthin back that breaks that every twist turn or bending over. Do you have any advice on safer exercises and how I can heal so I can get back to the gym?

    Yes! That makes sense. Thank you! We have an ab twist machine like that at the Fitness 19 in Menifee except you're on your knees twisting. Last time I used it i felt a stinging sensation on my spine. Couldnt figure out if it was due to poor posture or what but this answers my question. Gonna avoid that thing for good now. Thank you for the info! Yall saved my poor spine lol.

    You can also do leg lifts while in a side plank to take the progression even further :)

    Wow, I think you just described what could be going on with my back. Like you mentioned in response to a previous comment, there are many contributors to LBP, but this seems spot on with my symptoms. And I don't work out at a gym. Thanks for all your helpful advice!

      That Multifidus muscle being too inhibited can certainly lead to a lot of problems! It's very overlooked though. Very glad to help you out!

    Make sense, but you didn't address other oblique exercises that involve rotating the waist like Russian Twist or oblique crunches when you doing a crunch to the side are those ok?

    yeah I used that machine and I heard the muscle and I got lower back pain.

  • @Deristrome
    @Deristrome 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did the machine and while it does stretches my lower back a lot I don’t feel any pain afterwards. Should I keep using it? I’ve experienced positive strength gains, but if it will hurt my back I won’t use it.

    I have lumbar lordosis and spasm. Im on meds and on physio just getting deep tissue massaged before I can do stretch exercises. Back pain is the worse.

    • @Fitnessoriented
      @Fitnessoriented  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is good that you are getting help with that. Back pain is indeed not fun, especially since SO many different things can contribute to it. It is very hard to pin point a single cause.....often it is multiple things

    So no rotory torso machine, what about standard torso machine? It has you press your chest against pads hold bars and twist while on your knees? Will this one also cause long term pain?

      Thank you! I'd see a doctor about that....as that can result in Spondylolisthesis over time. In particular, I'd see a physical therapist actually, as they'll know more about the musculoskeletal system than any doctor except an orthopedic surgeon

    Good points those machines injure people, free wheights and body weight !

  • @mat_leo
    @mat_leo 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What about the machine whereby you kneel instead and your pelvic rotates instead of your upper body?

    • @Fitnessoriented
      @Fitnessoriented  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That can also cause issues, as now it's your upper body being kept still while your pelvis rotates. Those oblique twist machines are just bad in general! I also didn't mention in the video that your Lumbar Vertebrae aren't really made to twist like that, unlike your Thoracic Vertebrae, which can lead to a disc injury in the lower back

    Hi, I'm sorry this isn't related, but recently I started seeing more fitness people on the social media use knee sleeves to squat with. Should a healthy person use knee sleeves to squat heavy even though they don't feel any pain when squatting? What do knee sleeves actually do for healthy knees? I've read they help for people with previous knee injuries, but what about people without any injuries, would it be better for the knees with or without when squatting heavy?

    • @Fitnessoriented
      @Fitnessoriented  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the main thing they can help with is proprioception and making you more aware of how your knee is moving. It can also provide extra support, but that could be a bad thing as well as it could mask pain you would get in your knees from using improper form. As for if one is better using or not using knee sleeves, that's up to the individual

    • @manfromearth8656
      @manfromearth8656 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it can be considered a safety net if you go heavy and do some wrong move.. if they are tight enough
      once I was doing a PR and got off balance for sec, I felt it pulling the knee cap in place..
      for the obliques your telling us not to do *any* twisting motion? what about side bends? that's harsh

    • @PaleoLifestyleUK
      @PaleoLifestyleUK 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, that's what I thought too! You may get dependent on them if using constantly, but you have to learn do squat without them.

    • @PaleoLifestyleUK
      @PaleoLifestyleUK 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Doe If you're stupid enough to do PR's and 1 rep maxes, then yeah you SHOULD use them.

  • @cpemg

    Hi. Thanks for your videos. In Pilates and yoga there are stretches which are the same as this but without using the machine. Do you also think they could be harmful?

    • @Fitnessoriented
      @Fitnessoriented  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahhh, you mean like laying with your back on the floor and rotating your body? That should be fine as long as you have no pain. This one is bad because it locks the pelvis or on other machines, the upper body into place. Then you are twisting and moving weight. So doing that repeatedly can stress the Multifidus and the Discs in your spine

  • @boots7859
    @boots7859 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this is an older video, however I just watched another vid where the Planet Fitness version on which you kneel and twist from waist to mis-chest was called out as causing serious potential injury. Similar your yours.
    Seems like both of you are saying any sort of twisting with weight is potentially problematic. Hard to know who, which, both are correct without someone with some medical background. Not saying you are wrong, just that there seems to be conflicting advice.

  • @thebeast647
    @thebeast647 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    what abt the machine that you put your knees on and hold your chest againts a pad. you twist your knees to work the obliques. its essentially the opposite of this, is that unsafe too?

    • @Fitnessoriented
      @Fitnessoriented  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahhh, the one that rotates your pelvis while your upper body remains still? That's still pretty bad and can lead to the same issues. Also, I didn't mention that your Lumbar Vertebrae aren't really meant to twist like your Thoracic Vertebrae....so doing this exercise could potentially lead to a disc injury

    Hi Jeff. Do you know anything about shin splints... I suffer with them A LOT. I'm trying to jog recently, but I can only jog for 10 seconds on a flat before I have to stop because of the pain. I'm using ice and some stretches at the moment. Anything I can do to get rid of them forever?

    • @Fitnessoriented
      @Fitnessoriented  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed I do! I don't know about something to get of them forever, but I'd avoid anything painful....perhaps go to a physical therapist too to get evaluated. With Shin Splints, the Anterior Tibialis and/or Posterior Tibialis muscles can be affected. They may do particular massages on you, help you strengthen them, etc

    I do crunchies for the rectus abdominals. Then I twist elbow to opposite knee for obliques. Is this hard on the back too?

    • @Fitnessoriented
      @Fitnessoriented  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can keep your lower back pressed firmly on the mat or ground you are doing the exercise on, then it shouldn't be bad. Obviously if you have pain though, then don't do them

    i never recommend twisting machines, i never recommend twisting while holding a Plate in a pause the sit-up position. What enhances the problem is when you see Newbies doing this, people with weak untrained lower back strength doing this with the assumption they can spot reduce the Trunk area.

    • @Fitnessoriented
      @Fitnessoriented  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sit ups are just a bad exercise all around! I agree, I think a lot of people assume they have more thoracic extension and thoracic control than they really do, and then they run into problems
