The whole family has been a class act from everyone I’ve spoken to that I interacted with them. I grew up in the suburbs of Cincinnati, about 2 miles from where Griffey went to HS (Archbishop Moeller). My mom was the librarian at Moeller for several years, and when the Griffey family (as well as Larkin and [Buddy] Bell families) came back or were asked to help out the school, they always did so. Even more impressive, they made it personal (not just phoning it in or having a rep send something).

His swing is the reason why I started switch hitting, 7 in t-ball. F. Fwd to my first varsity game 9th grade my coaches forgot I can hit righty (natural side)where i played basically zero pitchers were southpaws except that day I remember being upset I couldn’t hit lefty for my first AB. By the time I was a senior I could still count my right hand ABs using my fingers. Best decision ever becoming a switch hitter!! No better feeling than hitting one out from each side in one game. Didn’t happen for me till I was an adult playing in a men’s league but hey it was still incredible.

I ALMOST saw Griffey's final HR. Hit the RF wall. He retired a week or two later. Also was fortunate to be there when he hit the 5,000th HR in Mariners history. It was my first time seeing him back with the Ms after watching him many times in the Kingdome.

I will never forget his last season with the Mariners. I was 19 years old, landed a job selling auntie annes pretzels in the stands. Basically got paid to have free season tickets/access to whole stadium. Favorite moment was his first homerun back as a Mariner, they send him in to pinch hit, near sold out stadium gives him standing ovation, you could just feel something special was about to happen. I completely stopped working, standing in the aisel along first baseline and just stood there in awe as my child hero walks up to the plate and sends (If I recall correctly) the very first pitch deep over the right center field fence with the smoothest swing in baseball history, just like he had done so many times before when I had gone to games as a child in the kingdome.

I was raised in Brooklyn and am a fan of that team in The Bronx (I wont say the name 😂)
But Jr.’s swing is something I can watch all day.
    It is pure perfection.
If they can bottle that swing up somehow, they should display it at The Smithsonian.
    Great video.
And the fact that Niehaus called both hits is legendary!

there isn't anyone I miss more than Niehaus. I preferred the radio over watching just because of him. 21 year playoff drought, and I didn't care as long as he was commentating. my favorite memories was hearing his voice on the way home from work. ugh the authentic human excitement and electricity he provided to a failing franchise is true love. wish he witnessed last year's playoff appearance 😢

My idle as a kid growing up. He started playing when I was 9. He actually got me to like the Sonics. I’m from Pittsburgh, played all sports, soccer, football, baseball, basketball, street hockey, billiards, any sport to be busy. My hometown teams I loved and also had idles on other teams.

Lol his swing is so fast it doesn't even seem like it's generating that much power but the ball FLIES when he makes contact. It's like he mastered physics with his swing.

He was the definition that everyone can win a championship but not everyone can be a hall of famer. One of the greats to ever do it, if your a baseball fan you at least try to do this swing more than once in your life and imitated his batting stance.

Ken Griffey is to baseball what Jordan is to basketball and Ali to boxing and jerry rice to football. The mariners never won the World Series but man i shire remember it feeling like they did more then a few times they produced more iconic players and singularly awesome moments for the sport of baseball then one franchise has any right to practically. Junior hands down purest swing ever to cross the plate and an absolute legend not only because he was so talented it’s what he did to the players around him his smile and his energy were infectious and he was and is my favorite person I’ve never met though I talk about him like I played on the team obviously I never had the pleasure but it’s funny I feel like I actually was on some of those teams. That’s what the kid did to people that’s what he did to me. That’s what he did for baseball. Thanks Griffey your father did right by you. Your the best and it’s not even close.
