- How To Practice Singing - Vocal Tutorial - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
There is a very specific way to practice your vocals.
It is not random.
It is not picking a smorgasbord of what you like and don't like.
There is a sequence on how to build and grow your voice safely and correctly.
In this video I give a quick snapshot of what that is supposed to look like.
I hope this helps you become a better singer!

Love your lessons and commitment to practicing what you preach. You are your brand. And I’m with every bit of it.
I’ve only been studying your material for a few weeks and I’m doing things I never in my life thought I’d be doing. Thank you. Genuinely and seriously, thank you for all of the above. Hope to meet you some day.
i like this guy because he genuinely wants to help people.
I like you because you can see people shining in a world that is sometimes very dark.
" A PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT"- the quote of the day.
Indeed!
He seems like a really nice guy who genuinely wants to help people instead of just being a pure businessman. Nothing wrong with being a businessman, but passion for your business is a great booster of success. Plus, people will like you more!
Thank you. I love singing. It's that simple.
Passion is needed for real success.
I'm going to start this today, I have never been able to pay for singing lessons because we are poor, but this gives me hope. I will be putting as much effort into this as I can. My friends are all really talented with singing and I just can't match up at all and I've been wanting to learn for a long time. This seems to be my way to learn. I want to sing, because I love music, music is my world and I want to be able to leave my mark on the world with my voice. Even if you do not remember this insignificant comment, I will update you as I continue to improve. Thank you so much for giving me a way to do this
Thanks for your comment, Blaize, and it's not insignificant to me. It means a lot to me that so many people, all around the world, are reporting that they are having great results with their voices, simply by watching my singing videos, and doing the things that I tell you will help you. You will find many videos from me here on TH-cam, and if you pay attention and practice the things that I show you, you can improve your voice. It takes a long time to see some of the improvements, and some take a lot of practice, but you can improve, one step at a time.
That is my plan and I am willing to do what I can as much as it is needed. If I can see the potential in myself and what I can do, I may try to take the beginners lessons from your site if I can afford it. Thank you so much for giving me a way to work on myself
@@blaizegurr5990 any updates 4 years later?? i hope you’re doing well and still going full throttle with your dreams!
I love how short yet insanely descriptive your videos are! They’re so addictive lol
Kens done the work, and he’s made mistakes, the KTVA course he put together is the result of his work, and what he’s learned from his mistakes, he knows what not to do, which is golden.
I highly recommend the KTVA vocal course. Why did I choose it over other courses? Cuz Ken himself is proof of the results. You’ll spend a lot more money on a private vocal coach, and how do you know if that person is going to be teaching you lessons that are foundationally sound?
Thanks, Richard. There are lots of choices, but only one that will give this kind of results. Let your coach prove it with their voice.
+Richard Goldman I couldn't agree more.
"Lie from the pit of hell" LMAO - that was awesome (and very true)
I call them as I see them, Dennis!
Yeah ,I lost it too, lol, wayneeden95@gmail.com
I love how you talked about the "four stages of competence" I've looked up on all of them but with the hard words that describe it I could never understand it in detail so thanks for explaining that with simpler words that make sense to me, thanks to you I can try apply this to other things as well!
I'm a worship leader. I've been practicing with all your videos. It's been insane how much my voice has improved. People wonder how I improved my voice. You're the best of the best.
That's totally awesome, David! I'm glad the videos are helping you!
The beginning was perfect. As an example. I started to play basketball in 2015. I've decided early that I need a jumpshot. I've looked all aroumd the internet and stuff and practiced with a horrible shooting form and always wondered why my shots won't go in. So I had to tweak my jump shooting form a bit, and after several weeks of changes I've managed to develop a great shooting form and right now I'm hitting jumpers over my buddys constantly. I think thats exactly the same with singing. Of course there is no perfect way to learn singing, but you can strive for the near perfect way for yourself. I decided weeks ago to start singing and practiced several things and already heard what's working and what's complete bullshit. Thank you for putting out these type of videos. I will keep you updated on my voice development.
Good morning Mr.Ken. Great to see you again. I understand, the proof is in the practicing. You can't take them by the hand and say okay it's lesson time. Your the proof of hard work. May you and your loved ones be healthy and prosper always.
Thanks, Skylark!
So much truth being spoken here gang. Working on Kens vowel modifications was a real revelation unlocking the mystery of why certain words/syllables were always problematic, especially on the high side of E/F.The scales are a MUST to fix this, especially after 40yrs "bad practice".Thanks Ken for your always spot on insight.
Thank you, JOHN KUHN MUSIC!
Your “practice makes perfect” speech is true. I practiced singing a few songs over and over again a few months ago. That was when I was going through a huge voice change and pretty much every note was off with a lot of voice cracks. But this morning I woke up and felt motivated to sing. (Remember I haven’t sang in a few months) I actually did really well for no singing knowledge at all but when I went back to those songs that I was practicing a few months back it was still off because I practiced them so much
Keep it up!
@@kentamplin You too man!
You Ken are a legend , I trained for 4 months almost everyday by 3 hours (1 hour exercises and 2 hours singing) and then one day I said I'm gonna rest for 1 week and after that my voice was boom now I can sing with distortion and my throat doesn't hurt it feels like natural , thank you for your very good tutorials
Thanks, Endrit!
Can you list me the videos that you followed and helped you a lot ?
Thanks
Endrit Shabani upload your singing on TH-cam
Yes pls list in which tutorial u follow the most..
please!!! we need those videos
6:22 oh wow! I’m a baritone and always been jealous of tenors! Lol! That is exactly me, even the same upper note for chest voice all these years! There is hope!
There is!
I love how honest you are in the teaching and to the point. Need more like that
Jsusfrk20 I appreciate that comment!
@@kentamplin you're most welcome :)
Those crazy eyes while belting ^_^
Ha, ha! All the better to Sing to you with, Goldilocks!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy You're great when you do that and it is like a signature of yours for me :)
Ken you are so rad. My friend bought me your full course but I moved shortly after and it was lost. I am now having to resort to your webvids. Keep killing it!
The discussion of the stages of learning is surprisingly scholarly. Very impressive.
Amazingly, I have a lot of knowledge about how singing and learning work...
I picked up the KTVA program a little over two months ago and I am just amazed at the progress I've made. I just moved on to level 2 of the program and, wowza, some great exercises on there too. I'm excited to see my progress on level 2 and can't wait to move on to level 3 when my voice is ready for it! Mostly because glottal compression is used a lot in my favorite songs! You, sir, are amazing and I regret nothing in getting your program! I reached a massive level of frustration after a couple of weeks into the program, as I was having difficulty getting to the higher notes in the level 1 dudes warm-up. After continuing to apply what was taught (vowel modifications, release valves, etc), I feel better about hitting those higher notes on the dudes scale. I got through that first level of frustration and kept going. Now, I am doing alright so far with the even higher notes presented in the level 2 dudes exercises! Still working my way up (as I'm a baritenor with a range of around F2 - Bb4 - trying to at least reach the high C one day) during my daily exercises and practice! Two of my biggest issues before getting the course was pitch control and tone, and I'm amazed at the progress I've made so far!
Those that are trying to get all the information from these free videos, I can tell you that the "How to Sing Better Than Anyone Else" program through KTVA is a great investment if you're serious about learning appropriate techniques for singing. All of the information in the program is not here on TH-cam - and there are some great teachers on TH-cam that offer free advice, but my voice did not grow as much as it has in the past two months! And, I've found some great teachers that offer free programs, but I'm glad I invested in the program Ken Tamplin has to offer!
I'm hoping to post some videos of me playing my guitar and singing some of my favorite covers once I feel as though my voice is primed and ready! \m/
Jason, thanks for taking the time to let others know what you are finding out for yourself. My program really works, and if you put in the time and effort, you will be hitting those C5's and better. You will be very proud of yourself when you realize that you have accomplished that, through your own hard work. You know, you're never alone with my program. When you run into snags, you can go to my singers forums and ask questions and get interactive feedback on your demos of your KTVA exercises. The moderators will help you to know what you need to do to get to the next step. You will hit plateaus, but they are just the prelude to your next big accomplishment. As long as you keep doing my program, your voice will continue to grow, like it already has, even years from now. Good singing to you, my friend!
Certainly! Yes, and the forum is an amazing resource. The moderators have already been very helpful during my first steps in the program and I will utilize that resource the next time I hit a snag or have a question.
Alright, Then the moderators are doing their jobs right! They know my program inside-out and are there to help you get the most out of your program!
Hey Ken - would you post a video of your actual full daily practice session? I would love to follow along as best I can.
Set long term goals. Got it.
Thanks Ken, I feel a little better about my progress
dimplez1ish Keep at it!
Love that you have intelligent, researched and experienced advice. Respect that.
Thanks for your kind words, tropicgal55!
I wish that I could take voice directly from you, Ken. I know exactly what you mean here. I’ve been criticized for the natural classical training, so that all goes through my head and I freak out a bit with those thoughts when trying something modern.
If you've had classical training and ended up frustrated with the results when trying to sing pop or jazz or rock or other modern styles, you would LOVE my training, because it has the same root of Bel Canto, without the operatic rounding and darkening. Instead, I OPEN UP your voice and help you set it free. My home course is loaded with videos that help you see what I am teaching, and you get tons of exercises to train your voice. My forums has top-notch moderators that help you to understand fine points and evaluate your progress, giving feedback. If you decide to up the ante, you can have one-on-one skype lessons with me to boost you up another notch. Finally, if you need that in-person experience, you can do the travel and work with me, but the skype lessons are really less costly and work wonders. The home course is a great way to start.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Wonderful! I’ll get the course and get help with the forums as well as see if we can set up Skype lessons as well. I’m going to discuss it with my husband and see what we
can budget right now. Please pray for us (especially my hubby, Will) as we are renting a room at his parents’ home and the singing lessons actually made him happy to hear. God bless you!
Thank you Ken for you precious piece of advice...
You're welcome, FBGOODIE!
Thank you ken for these I was learning form dozens of TH-cam videos ..sometimes sls, sometimes ktva......i will not now
Glad to help!
I swear to god i tried your instructions and can sing wayyyyyy better. I am so thankful I found your channel. 🙏🏻

I appreciate your videos, I only stumbled on them yesterday. This is exactly what I’m looking for. Thank you
Thanks for the kind words, Trevor!
ken you are so right about that i wanted to say also a lot of people do not understand the different between band music and solo for example the song love bytes by def lepard on the course line its all the band members singing at the same time or harmonizing thanks ken for all your stuff
:-)
Yes finally found you again. You are the best!
Welcome back!
You helped me believe in myself. I got a new instructor per you video. Thanks for being so helpful
My pleasure, Becca!
Great brother! It’s pretty amazing that you put ALL this info out here for FREE!!
SonnyGTA- Hope it helps!
Wow! I'm totally hooked to your videos now. We are on a tight budget, saving for our first home, but hopefully soon we can invest in your full lessons. Definitely getting your book asap, though. Thank you so much for taking time out to make these videos!! Looking forward to seeing lots more and, who knows, maybe even meeting you some day! Stay blessed!!!
Thanks for the kind words, Rhonda!
I understand what you mean, but not everyone can afford the lessons. But I'll still try to do with what I have already. Thanks anyway :)
I started learning voice lessons from TH-cam and an Android app for just two months also watching live music videos from Artists like Debbie Gibson (inspired me to sing) , Sussana Hoffs (bangles), Foreigner. Etc. At first, I cracked my voice singing waiting for a girl by foreigners all in chest voice then i realized there is head voice. Voice exercises also through breathing exercises.
It really was a trial and error with no having physical professional instructors that monitors and corrects postures and improvements.
By the way, not all videos in TH-cam are useful, some can damage your voice. I tried following one voice instructor.
My highest range is a#5 and lowest is e2. That's 3 and half octaves.
By the way, in my elementary days, I topped in Music Class exam in the Finals that our Valedictorian personally approached and congratulated me😁. So no doubt about how i got 2 months (I'm a fast learner) but really Voice is not like musical instruments you can push to learn.
Also see understand the anatomy of voice box (larynx).
It's only now I had interest in singing and composition. Although I had tried to compose a song with dance steps in elementary but dropped it feeling I thought was not good enough for me. But from my understanding, being a Soccer Varsity and still feeling not good enough for me yet everyone who sees me including our coach as a very talented person. Including how I won as the best keyboard player in a college battle of bands but feeling wasn't enough for me 😁.
True wisdom from a master, thank you Ken. 👏🏻😉❗
You are absolutely right it take some time to master the skill. You can hit a high note after some tricks in vocal exercise or someone one on one show you that do this do that and suddenly you hit the note but it didn't make anyone singer overnight( maybe in some cases if person is naturally good singer😉) you have to practice enough to sing with that techniques. I only believe those vocal coach's who himself physically demonstrates.
Varun, You're right about proving it with their voice. If a voice can't sing, then why didn't their teaching give THEM a good singing voice? A REALLY good singing voice to sing really tough songs? Why is that?
Greetings Ken! I'm not a lead vocalist, I'm a guitar player, and more specifically, the lead guitar player for 2 different bands. In one of my bands there are multiple singers, so I'm not asked to do much vocally. However, in my other band, I've been asked to step up and sing more. I was doing mostly harmonies and background vocals, but will now be taking lead on a few songs, and the male lead vocal on a duet. I had basic, rudimentary vocal training back in college (jazz program as a guitarist), and that was because pretty much all music majors, no matter your main instrument, were required to take 2 semesters of vocal classes as part of your core curriculum. Needless to say, I've never been confident in my singing. I've decided that its time to take singing and vocal training more seriously, rather than faking it every night on stage. I'm a musician, and I take pride in being able to play my instrument well. Now it's time to do the same with my singing. I've watched several of your YT videos, and was ultimately directed to your website. The materials and tools you offer in your various courses, seem to cover every facet of singing and what it will take to ultimately be successful. You go way more in depth than most of the private vocal teachers that I've researched, and/or met with in person do. Just wanted to say thank you, and that I'm really looking forward to diving in head first. I think I will be starting with the "Main Course" package that you offer, but if you think I should consider adding another specific course, let me know.
Cheers!
Jonathan
johndubb78, I recommend you get The Course Plus PRO PACKS. It's the best deal, and if you're serious about singing, that's the way to go, from the start. You have a very realistic view as to what kind of dedication REALLY improving your voice will take. Thank you for doing your homework and seeing for yourself what's out there and who is really delivering real-world results. If you want to be a PRO, you can go from "just singing some backing vocals", to LEAD SINGER, simply by learning how it's done, seriously practicing, and applying that to your voice. KenTamplinVocalAcademy.com/
You've got a new fan, Ken! Thank you for the amazing content, Brother! I've recently discovered a passion for singing that I had NO IDEA existed and I'm hooked! I'm going to look into your courses!
😊
I Love you Ken
You are the best teacher
Thanks, my friend!
You are so honest and straightforward and that’s refreshing - thank you ☺️
I appreciate the kind words, Paula!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy you are genuine, you can’t put a price on that, God bless you 💚
I practice singing in my car. LoL. I recently downloaded a heap of karaoke tracks for songs i really wanna sing. That way i can sing loud and not worry about anyone hearing me, i've also got a dash cam so i can listen to myself later. It ain't perfect but it works a bit LoL.
I find singing the karaoke track better, because if i'm singing along with the artist A: i can't really hear myself because i can hear the artist more than myself. and B: When i'm singing along with the artist, i tend to try and sing like them. Whereas with no vocals i can find my voice, and i can add my own flair to the song.
There's a couple of songs now i do a little different to the original artist, and i kinda like it! Just a change in the note here and there, increase pitch instead of decrease, change key instead of keeping it normal. When i'm a bit more confident i'll post a video on the forum :D
Definitely investing in this course once I regain work as I want to learn to sing properly and belt! Tempting to get the Gold Course just to met Sensi Ken face to face!
Carl Wells I'll be here when you're ready! kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
I have been using your tips and already getting better. Just have to get over the shy part.
That is great, April!
Man I love your work so much! I just found out about you recently and I wish I could be trained vocally by you in person. I am learning a lot but I would love to expand my singing under you!
PhazeRCIL- That is great to hear!
Those are very translatable analyses on proficiency, glad I heard them
Thanks for the visit! 👍💜😀
Done deal, sold. Goal set, working on it now.
Troy McKibbin- Awesome!
My math teacher said the same perfect practice thing .... This is some crazy coincidence
It your math teacher taking my course? ;-)
This is just what I needed, thank you so much ♡︎♡︎
I'm so glad!
💜hi Mr. Tamplin,
I Thank you.
👏👏👏
Ken thanks a lot for these videos I keep getting better at singing or at least more confident in it when I watch ur videos and then take your advice. I been watching your videos for 5 or 6 months now and I can tell you they definitely work well. I'm still trying to get your course though even though it's taking a while to save for it but if the free info this good I can only image be how good the paid info is gonna be thanks for caring and making these videos for everyone ur so cool
So happy to hear you are making progress. Good for you! Keep up the hard work. I'll be here when you're ready.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy thanks Ken I appreciate that :)
Always very useful to hear candid thoughts on practice schedules. nuts and bolts
Glad it was helpful!
Ken I’ve found the absolute best place to practice your course. The car on the way to work. This means you have no excuse for not practicing. With the radio you control the volume so you can get the plane prop effect for pitch. You can hear yourself with your voice bouncing off glass in front of you. Your seat for posture. The mirror for tongue placement. You can’t annoy anyone else your with crazy work out. Thirty minutes to work thirty minutes back means an hour a day for sure to practice
Where there's a WILL there's a WAY, Bennie!
Really useful class Ken! I've tried to learn to sing with distortion, but even with a very qualified teacher I didn't. Today I don't even try anymore, only clean voice. I've learned how to sing in head voice, chest voice, mix voice and falsetto as well as how to train and practice, to get better. But drives... I really didn't. I've tried to practice, but didn't find the right way to study this technique.
Time to look into my course, Joe. I teach you how to build a voice that can be soft or driven. I give you practice routines that will grow and grow your voice, over time.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy How can I know more about it Ken? About the price and how to be a KTVA student living in a far country.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy I've entered your website Ken, and found more information about your course. Today I don't have enough conditions to get it, notwithstanding the price is really cheap for a course like this. But when I can, I'll take it. While I wait for this I will keep watching to your free lessons. God bless you Ken!
It's not that easy to practice. I love my mom's singing (She is Basically from an ancient Carnatic based music background). She studied for having fun at her childhood to make them busy. But, never been able to keep up without practising often. Practice makes everything perfect!! Absolutely honest point is that you can't achieve singing in over a night. Loved it! Need more videos like this!
Thanks for your kind comments, B! Interesting story about your mom.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Thank you! I conveyed it to her. You've been awesome everytime!!
Peace to you too ken!
Simply perfect explanation!
Thanks for your kind words, Thiago!
When you said A PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, I went to think "but perfect doesn't exist".....
But at singing, sometimes you hear some perfect singing performances that you say "THIS COULDN'T GET BETTER, IT'S PERFECT" !
Thanks for the vid, Ken, I'm getting more and more convinced to, when I have more money (starting a new job soon), choose KTVA over local singing teachers, because you and your students just PROVE IT SINGING. The catchphrase is perfect, proof really is in the singing :)
Jędrzej, thanks! Looking forward to you rocking your voice!
Thanks Ken awesome advice..Intelligent approach for sure peace..
Thanks, John! I appreciate your comment! Rock on!
Thanks KEN I like your teaching style so much bcoz you explain all things easily always love you and God bless and my name is zamir from India.😊
So nice of you! Thanks for the visit! Happy New Year! 🎉🥂🍾🎈🧨
Thanks man, you are a gift!
Thank you, Jorus!
Hello Ken :D i would like to thank you for everything, your courses, your forum, i only made the youtube videos beggining at the start of february of this year, i was about to give up singing before i heard that phrase "A singer is only a singer because they have guts to be one" one year with only the youtube channel content i have progressed that i have not learned in 5 years, so i can't even imagine what will be when i buy the full course :D i'm anxious
Walter, your mind will be blown when you experience the vocal growth that you will get from my actual course! The beauty of my course is that the longer you keep doing it, even years from now, your voice will continue to grow and improve. It's just a question of when do you get started on that journey?
I'm decided to buy the full course at the end of this year, thank you very much Mr. Ken :D
So much respect
Thank you, Rami!

Amanda Feinner Awesome!
Thanks so much! I am simply a person who enjoys singing to the radio and wants to not sound like a tortured animal. Lol. But I really love your teaching style so subscribed! You have a great vibe. I love the description of stages.. Makes sense. I'm definitley unconscious incompetent! 😂
I'm very honored that you susbscribed, Chris! I have lots of tutorials. I'm glad that you find them helpful! 😊

( lol,, not like how that sounds), but very important things with my family are happening right now. I have to focus on that, presently.
And, I don't like wasting time, or others.
I'd Also like to say to you, that this is very informative, an Awesome outline, of what your training has to offer.
You have a good one. Alright!
* l believe it harder to like, than love. 🙋
just sayin'. 💝
Janet, it's nice of you to share your heart and feelings and to express that you "get it": what I'm trying to express to people. You can see a glimpse of what my full-on training is like. Just like what I do in my TH-cam videos, but more in-depth and all part of a larger whole, that all fits together into this giant, interlocking system of musical art. When I practice singing, it's like when a doctor practices medicine, or an attorney practices law. We DO it, but they call it a "practice".
Love this video! You're a very real teacher
Kjo- Thank you!
Nice I see your all videos
💜hi again!
I know you have more extensive warm-ups!
But still,,
I just liked this one a lot 😁💜👏

Hey Ken. Thanks for the awesome video and enforcing that even top performers need to practice every single day.
You also touched on the subject of setting goals and being aware where one is and where one wants to be over time. Apart from range, what are some other abilities a singer should develop?
I could write a long essay about this, but there are a myriad of things you need to learn to perfect so that they all come together in your voice. That's why I have my course. To walk you through all of these items and train you how to do them until they become second nature for you.
Indeed a lovely lesson from a lovely person. Your style of training is the best in the world sir. I request you to please cover Simple Man from Lynyrd Skynyrd or Kings Fall by Michael Kiske or Rod Stewart Sailing.
Thanks for the requests and the kind words, Mango!
Wow good job

Ken, I've been practicing and the distortion is growing good! Thanks to you!!!! But I noticed that to sing something more more emotional to be more difficult than sing a rock distorted tune. Do you agree?
This is a great conversation for the forum, please consider posting there, you'll get great feedback! forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/

You're welcome, kevinjml!
yes, practising can be very frustrating. I teach myself recording songs. Some songs I can sing within two or three sessions but sometimes I try songs that I feel I can sing them with lots of practise and sometimes I focus too much on the technique than on the story of the song. At the moment I am working on a song that's quite difficult for me. I try to stay relaxed but when a high notes comes I am focussing to much on the high note. I have to find the right balance.
The story is very important, but a story with poor technique may not come out so well, unless you are Bob Dylan or someone like that. Good technique can help you to better tell the story without the distractions of poor singing. Get your technique up to speed, and then work on song delivery, utilizing those good techniques.
Thank you for the advice. I main things I have to consider are support, a relaxed throat/neck and the correct resonance placement, if I am right.
practice also makes permanent

You're welcome Sarah, but I am your servant!
Man i love your videos. Shame I can't get the real program. You should hire someone to email people back so I can get more than just the tip of the ice burg.
Teacher Ken, can you give me correct and how long should I practice daily. Example how long should I vocal exercise after that how long should I practice singing, for my daily practice.
An hour per day, 5 times a week on exercises. Then however much you feel like singing after that.
Could I see a big improvement just by doing your youtube tutorials and exercises or only your singing course would help?
The TH-cam videos are samples of what we go over in much greater depth in my course. My free videos will help you, no doubt. My course will walk you through every aspect of your voice.
I didn't know you were a Christian man. That's awesome! Keep up the great videos. I just bought your beginner course and I am excited to get started 😊
