- The Terraria summon everybody should be using... The Desert Tiger Staff. In this video, I take a look at this post Plantera summoner weapon which similar to Abigail's flower in how only one tiger can be summoned at a time, but will become more powerful depending on how many slots are used. With only 3 or 4 summons you can expect some fantastic performance from the minion thanks to it's high damage attacks and extremely fast movement. It's also capable of attacking airborne targets making it viable up until post cultist. If you haven't all ready, you really should give it a try!

@@sleepingoverratedsnohitcha2875 no, thats the chance of the first 2 desert enemies you fight both dropping keys. its probably somewhere around every 1 in 1000 times you get a key you will get 2 (since you can kill multiple enemies in the time it takes to pick it up)
I remember when this summon first came out everyone was saying it was "bad" and "a dissapointment" just because it didnt summon a whole army of minions just to be proved wrong by how fast it killed the bosses with the right equipment
I mean the summon did get buffed twice damage wise since it furstvcame out
I mean, the summon is very slow, can't be really used against Duke Fishron or Empress or even Moon Lord

If you're *really* dedicated in using the Desert Tiger, the best whip for it is ironically the first Hardmode whip you get- the Firecracker. The explosion tag it has combined with the Desert Tiger's pounce gives you one of the most absurd DPS in the game. Granted the Firecracker's range makes it hard to use at that point in the game, but that combination should help you immensely with Daytime EoL if you use it right- which you'll have to do anyway in general if you're fighting her for the Terraprisma.
IIRC the tag effect was the next minion attack will deal triple the damage + it is AoE. Bosses will lose a chunk of their HP based on your whip attack speed. Most effective for Duke Fishron since he always try to get in melee range
Firecracker also works well combined with blade staff, but the problem comes in the form of having to defeat queen slime for it.
@@SomeCowguy Blade Staff benefits more from flat whip tag damage stacking, Desert Tiger and Stardust Dragon benefit more from the percentage increase that Firecracker gives instead.
Many fast hitting minions = low base damage of each minion = flat damage increases work the best
A single/fewer slow hitting minions = high base damage = percentage damage increases work the best
if you stack with a kaleidoscope and morning star, you can get that explosion to crit, which does some pretty haha funny amounts of damage

This was the minion that taught me how meaningless the minion targeting system is. I'm telling it to target Golem and he's all the way outside of the temple attacking random enemies off screen
best way to fix that is to just resummon the minion, right on the boss if possible, usually that forces them to change to your targeted enemy. but its still stupid now they don't instantly prioritize a marked enemy.
But it’s so fast it doesn’t really matter because it’ll kill those enemies in half a second and come back
Slight correction: you only need 1500 sand blocks for a desert biome, not 2000. I built a desert key farm in my recent summoner playthrough, and that was the number of blocks I needed.
Also to make town NPCs think it's the desert biome, you need 1500 sand blocks. Don't ask me why I built an artificial desert biome just for the NPCs

@@arigatiu uhhh i was too lazy to build actual houses in the desert so I went to the desert, mined 1.5k sand blocks, placed them near spawn and all of this just to buy a desert pylon. Eventually though I built the houses I the desert. Yeah I'm that insane cry about it

You can make the desert farm significantly easier if you use the new dangerous walls feature in the new update. Basically you throw sandstone wall into shimmer and it becomes the active wall used in the underground biome that you can’t normally get. Placing only a few of these around you will have the same effect as the 2000 sand with only like 12 walls
It won't technically be a desert biome, it just spawns the enemies
i found this summon when i was playing with a melee build and even if i didnt have the summoner accesories or the whips, it was super powerfull anyways. its definitly my favorite
Even just as a support weapon while using a different class it's helpful. I got it in my first playthrough and despite not using summoner at all this thing was a big help for dealing with enemies.
Tiger staff is my favorite because its really good and comes in a compact cute package. I usually have that, terraprisma, blade, and sanguine to switch between for different situations though.
I was thinking about using this thing once I beat Plantera (currently using the sanguine staff in master mode and got a desert key early on), and it looks like I may have been correct with that idea!

Jokes aside, I'm so thankful that this weapon got the review it deserved. It really is one of the more underrated summons due to how time consuming it is to get.
One important thing to note is that accessories, armors, and whips are game changers for the tiger. Since the tiger is based around how many times you can summon it, things like the necromantic scroll or spooky armor are really great for it. Whips such as the firecracker can also increase the base damage, and pounce damage with the firecracker is absolutely amazing.
Btw, if you use the shimmer on sandstone walls and place I think it was like 200 of them it does the same. It creates an infested variant which is for mob spawning. The same time of wall you would find in the wild. No need to create a full biome worth of sand
It spawns the enemies yes, but it is not a desert biome. You need a real desert biome for the key to drop
The best part is that summoner is probably the most useful class due to you can use summons as other classes, and get up to 3 summons with buffs which allows you to still have a decent amount
So during last playthrough with my friend, we got lucky and got the staff almost immediately after Plantera. It has insane potential. I prefer it over a lot staffs, especially when mining. The tiger has very long attack range and most importantly travels through blocks. As bonus it highlights caves 😁.

I spent so much time beating empress with a Spectre-Blizzard Staff-Razorblade Typoon setup. I mostly fought the empress as a challenge to myself, but it was certainly painful. I honestly would recommend desert staff as well if you’re hoping to save time.
I got it in an "dig up" world and had my base just below the crimson. The level 1 tiger killed all cave mobs all the time, it was very great! The fact it can attack through any walls makes it very nice

Getting the terraprisma was hell for me, dying to the daytime empress, getting prismatic lacewings and repeating this process took wayy too long
Desert Tiger Staff should be used with the Firecracker, not Morning Star. It's the best summon for Golem but it's just not worth getting since Raven staff is almost as good and a million times easier to get. It also gets outclassed by the Xeno Staff straight after Golem.
Really it was nearly as good as the terraprisma in dps against moon lord
@@luzhoothoot2808 That is just incorrect.. Terraprisma is substantially better, it kills Moon Lord 65% faster than Desert Tiger Staff. Don't know where you got that information from.
Raven Staff is overrated.
It doesnt get outclassed by Xeno Staff, both are very different summons that are good for different situations.

@@tear959 Raven is only for golem since it's easy to get (from a ''mandatory'' event) and then after you just get Xeno which does outclass Raven.
On my first ever expert playthough as a summmoner, i was having trouble with the Duke this lil guy just helped me tons. It is a staple for me now.
the desert tiger has always looked like a cool summon to me, but my luck is horrendous whenever i do try to farm for it. i could probably get 20 of each other biome key long before i get a desert key
that’s me with the corruption key. it’s the only one I made a farm for in my 1.4.4 playthrough and the only one I cant get 💀 despite making it up to 600 souls of night
Try summoning a bunch of king slimes, all the slimes can drop a key, got one in about 10 minutes today
I got 38 corruption keys + 21 hallowed keys, this speaks for my pain before getting desert key.

Would be cool if you could post ml shimmer stuff like the forgotten armor and desert tiger staff that are unique but you can't use them late game cause there are better choices
This is actually my best go to weapon to beat daytime EoL, but after that I just go with terraprisma afterwards lol

I tend to use the desert tiger staff for empress, but the terraprisma is just too good compared to any other option available to turn down once you've got it

I love this summon, it's always the first one i go for after plantera when i play summoner
I always wondered how good the Boulder Staff will be, could be amazing crowd control and event killing
I think that this staffs problem is that at that stage of the game you are mainly doing post-plantera and post-golem events, and even though the tiger destroys the enemies, it always leaves you alone and unprotected (not good at crowd control)
Fire Gauntlet + Morning Star works wonderful to dps and knocking out mobs when you're alone. But still you're right with the defenseless point, but I think it's part of the "joke", the summoner class is really squishy without minions to "balance" the game. Maybe the devs always think we mostly play with people and not alone 😂😅

I didn't know this weapon was this good I might try to get it in my next playthrough, you know there's this weapon that would be cool for you to talk about it's called *The Leaf Blower!*
I got this weapon on my very first playthrough on PC (it was just a few months ago) and it worked wonders! To be fair, I was playing on normal difficulty, but it got me to the Pillars no problem before I switched it out for the Stardust Dragon and eventually the Terraprisma before finally killing the Moonlord.
I'm doing a Master Mode playthrough now and just beat The Destroyer, so hopefully the other mech bosses won't be too much of a problem once I get some better gear and start fishing for good potion ingredients! Getting the Rod of Discord should help a lot too now that I can set up an afk farm for it!
I used it during my master mode ranger run, even when i could craft stardust summons, or use the terraprism, he was so cute that i used him to figth moon lord.
Something that I tried that worked magic for getting keys, is using king slime spawners to spawn king slime and all of the smaller slimes and they can all drop the key. Considering that you can kill thousands of slimes in 5 minutes, it’s crazy effective, and although it costs 1 ruby and a few platinum/gold bars and 20 gel per summon, trust me, it’s worth it.
You should study the amarok, it’s underrated

The desert tiger also performs much better with Durendall + Dark Harvest + Firecracker.

My playthrough style is to just go whatever class RNG chooses for me, so when I got a random Desert Key drop while farming for the Forbidden Armor, it was a good excuse to pivot from Mage to Summoner. Can confirm, it’s great. Carried me all the way to Stardust pillar.

Being a Summoner main, who is also quite a big fan of the Desert biome and wanted it to get a biome chest.... The Desert Tiger is kinda perfect for me.
Its cute, unique in its functionality, and its rare, which for me, makes it fun to farm for and get.
I love this thing. I only wish it was even stronger so I could use it even more.
You can also spam the tiget staff to make the tiger use bounce attack on command.
I spammed the weapon during the christmas moon event and I was shocked when it attacks all the enemy multiple time in a short time
Make a video about the paintball gun. It was normaly anoying to use bc it was burst but now that autofire is a thing its a REALLY good pre boss gun.

I farmed for a crimson and desert biome key on the surface during a bloodmoom and got them both in about 5 min
Me and my best buds call the summon Tony (as in Tony the Tiger). And since for our first For The Worthy Master Play through (btw we jumped right into master) I’m playing summoner. So I can’t wait to get this.
I got a desert key by luck when I had an solar eclipse in my world. I was fighting a Mothtron in the desert, in search of the broken hero sword, when my minions killed some mummies and it droped a key. I went to the dungeon, got the desert tiger staff and even crafted a Terra blade. That was a lucky day!

It's like stardust dragon but have a relative more consistency (because is you arw in plataforms with 20 blocks of difernce he won't hit anything, you should use the soaring insignia or use cute fishron with honey to make the tigger deal his max consistency and dps, because he will only fly)

as a summoner, i dont go for the desert tiger staff. i just cant be bothered to get a desert key, so i just go for the xeno staff, which is also extremely powerful. you can kill the EoL in about 30 seconds (with whip stacking)

One of the weirdest things I’ve noticed with farming biome keys, recently, is that I’ve gotten two keys from one enemy multiple times in a single playthrough. There must be something changed about the drop rate of keys, because it’s crazy how many times that has happened to me
I've had that happen with the biome keys too! I think they were corruption keys
Coming in a year late on this vid, I know. It was only recently that I got to see the full power of the White Tiger Staff when playing Calamity. For the longest time I dismissed its low damage for the other modded weapons, naturally assuming they could take on the Astrum Deus more much efficiently. Lo and behold I was beyond wrong. Watching it rip and tear through the boss fight like a green soldier from hell had shown me that it was, in fact, a fantastic weapon and should never be overlooked.
Good thing I got two desert keys pre mech fighting queen slime and getting sandstorms
I had done exactly what you did with the Desert Key, but for me it was the Hallowed one. I was just farming unicorns and pixies for Holy Arrows when they dropped within seconds of each other.
Same with me lol, right after killing wall of flesh going to farm pixies for wings and then 2 in a row hallow keys, sad that hallow key weapon is trash but im still glad with this luck, or maybe its not my luck but developers hiddenly increase chance for this keys
When I play with summoner gear I often prefer ones that summon armies it just feels better. If AI was better and could allocate say 75% to the main target and the remaining 25% to crowd control it would be better. But since when using a whip it's more of a all for one thing I can see why the single summon get stronger approach is better. I kinda wish though that you could upgrade summons to be more powerful as well. It would be awesome to be able to beat the Moon Lord with an army of slimes.
And there is a way to make the Desert Tiger even stronger: using a lot of summon damage boosting and minion slot increasing accessories, you could add a Firecracker whip to the build. After hitting an enemy with the whip, the next minion to attack that enemy would deal 2.75 of its normal damage. With the max amount of them summoned, the Desert Tiger could go from dealing 172 contact damage and 192 pounce damage... to dealing a whopping 473 contact damage and 528 pounce damage! That's before any reforges and summon damage boost, the whip's damage itself, and not even considering how fast the Desert Tiger attacks as well! So the dps could possibly rack up a lot.
There's a "trick" to make daytime empress easy(/-ier). Build a long rail somewhere mid-air, and use the mechanical cart. This way your speed will outrun most of her attacks no problem, and only requires you to jump once in a while with her sword-trajectory attack thing.

You should’ve used the firecracker with stardust armor for whip range. The firecracker makes a little explosion that makes your summons attacks do 2.75x damage for that hit. That’s roughly 1250-1400 damage per whip hit. It’s ridiculous. (If not stardust armor, tiki armor for whip range).

I never bothered with the weapon, but this has changed my mind.
I feel like this key has a waaaaay higher drop rate, cause I've gotten several, per recent playthrough, whereas the normal keys take grinding.
The most efficient option for opening the biome chests is to just turn them into regular chests you can open. So efficient you can do it pre hardmode.
its also most authentic summon that when you say "release the hounds !"
If you don’t want to place down 200 sand tiles then you can use treacherous sandstone walls
The probelm is, Pygmey Staff (that drops from Plantera), after recent buffs gets better DPS than Desert Tiger, even against some of the faster enemies. And so does literally every other Post-Plantera summon and also Tempest Staff, all of which got buffed in Labour of Love. And if we're talking Post-Golem, there is absolutely no reason to use it instead of Xeno Staff. Desert Tiger is not bad, but it is outclassed by everything on its level of progression. If you want a good Biome Chest summon weapon, Frost Hydra is the best pre-Moonlord sentry. Not that any of the pre-Moonlord sentries are actually good, but free damage is free damage.
the past couple days, almost every time i got a key i was still building the farm. usually when i'm almost finished
I kinda like the tempest staff because once theres like 3-4 of the sharknados it can anilate enimies
I got lucky on my world, was fishing in crimson desert, got crimson and desert key, and first desert chest had the staff and on that world I was playing summoner
i got the dessert key without trying barely into hardmode

The desert tiger staff is one of my favourite summoner weapons and I have quite a few tips for anyone wanting to use it.
The easiest way I found to get a desert key was to fight king slime in a desert biome. The slimes he spawns can drop the key, and he spawns like 30 of them each. You might need to do a little bit of mining for the gold/platinum and ruby for the crown, but by this point mining is a minor annoyance.
the firecracker is by far best whip to use with it. Unlike most summons, the tiger attacks far too infrequently for the extra tag damage to help much. The fire cracker is basically perfect for it, as it gives a 3x damage for the next attack, which pairs perfectly with the tigers slow high damage attacks. It's a bit high risk for certain bosses, but I'd say it's worth the reward (except for ml).
The tiger's pounce cooldown gets reset if you re-summon it, use this for extra damage when you're out of the firecrackers range.
Wouldn't recommend for events unless you built an arena that deals with most of the fodder enemies. Crowd control is not it's strong suit, and even using a whip like the mourning star for crowd control can still leave you vulnerable. It is good for shredding the boss enemies if you do have a way of dealing with the fodder, but it can still be pretty unreliable.
When whips got introduce summoners became a good class
I do like the desert tiger as a suplementary DPS for non-summoners, but I normally end up with either terraprisma (at endgame) or stardust dragon. But I never dia a summoner only play, so no idea if it is good to give up more minions for one buffed.
After playing a master summoner only run of terraria and spending the time to farm this weapon post plant I can safely say
It isn't good enough still it really struggles with the increased spawn rates of post plant events and it's attacks struggle with tracking, it will often fall off it's target or fly past it completely and often ignores your whip marks leaving you defenceless, it's much better to keep with the new buffed optic staff until you can get an upgrade like duke tornadoes or crows to fight pillars then getting teraprism after getting dragon
since you mentioned terraprisma i wanna ask, what is the chance to get it out of the treasure bag?
