Hi Suzanne, I just wanted to pop in a quick comment to let you know how very helpful your tutorials are to me. I'm in my mid 60's and my goal for this year was to knit my very first sock. I have made 2 (odd) socks, using them as learning tools/samples until I figure out what is right for me and which method and result I enjoy more. Your easy to understand tutorials are my absolute go-to for help and learning. I thank you so much for taking the time to do these... even on your 4th of July celebrations! Happy 4th to you and yours. I'm in Australia, so it's just another Sunday here lol... and I'm working on 'just another sock' ... using Addi Crasy Trio for the first time which I'm really liking, but deep down I think I shall continue to be a Magic Loop gal with my ChiaoGoo's lol
Feels good to have completed my first pair of socks. Bravo to you from the UK. My mum is wearing them in her last hours at 99 1/2, feels great to have made her something special and useful.
This tutorial was a huge help to avoid the center stripe! Ive been knitting for years and I love this channel because I learn cool tips that were not as accessible before. Thank you!
HI Suzanne, I just wanted to drop you a line to say THANKYOU for your tutorial. I have been knitting socks for many years now and it did not matter what i did I always ended up will holes when doing the heel. You have shown me the way, I can now do it whithout the holes. I will be eternally gratefull. THANKYOU.
I was about to give up and frog my sock until I found your video! I took the heel out and worked it while watching your video. I am so happy with it now!! Thank you for generously sharing your expertise! I could not have done it without you! ❤
I’ve found that the extra rows in the middle of the heel ( because you can’t stack the double stitches) makes for a very nice fitting heel compared to other short row methods.
I've never knit a sock, nor have I ever wanted to. In fact, when this video came up in my email, I thought, although I'm a devoted fan of Suzanne, maybe I should just skip this one. But then I came to my senses and thought it's always good to learn something new. I must say, you've tempted me...even more than the pretty sock yarns that I see when I go to my LYS. I still need to work my way through a bunch of UFOs (that's my promise to myself during lockdown) and then perhaps I'll try a pair. As always, thanks for making it do-able.
omg, thank you so much! I was trying to do this by changing yarn for each instep round and ended up with a hot mess of yarn tails 😂 you’re a superstar lifesaver!
I've only been knitting a couple of years, and I can't begin to tell you how helpful your tutorials have been! I'm making my first pair of socks and used this video to guide me through the heel. Your tutorials are so clear and easy to follow, thank you SO MUCH!
I'm new to knitting, in my sixties, and time to learn something new,😉 I am watching all the videos out there for techniques and tips. I have to say that I find following your videos very helpful they are the most clear and simple videos I've seen. When watching other videos I sort of get the gist and then I watch yours and everything comes into focus. Thank you so much for what you do.
So good to understand another technique for doing heels had not realised that their was so much to knitting socks but I can see they can be quite addictive. Thank you for giving me another arrow in my arsenal.
I watch on TV, so it's rare for me to go to my computer in order to leave a comment, but I just had to say thank you! I've spent the last 4 days cobbling together all the techniques for a pair of socks for my grandson, and this was the final mystery. How do I knit a German Short Row sock without that stripe in the front? You're a wizard! Thank you so much!
Have seen the German Short Row Heel demonstrated before, your instruction is clearer. I use another method but will give this a try, always game. Thanks Suzanne, enjoy the rest of your weekend. Be safe and happy.
Thank you, so much! I am just learning how to knit socks, and up until now I didn't understand how to knit the heal. Your explanation is so good! Now I can knit socks, and I am so happy!! 😊🙏🏼🇩🇰
Thank you for this tutorial. It has helped me so much with a pattern asking for wrap and turn which I wasn’t getting but you have helped so much and the German short row looks so much better.
Susanne, your tutorials are the best. I have been using other short row tutorials but was left confused. I love your second technique and will give it a try. I like the look of a garter stitch heel and assume that wouldn't be a problem using your technique. Thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into your tutorials.
Thank you for another great video! Working the heel the second way is obvious - now that you showed me. I let ads play, thumb upped, shared on Knitting Paradise with the video title as the thread topic. I want you to stay "in business" for a long time. PS I thought your color choices worked very well for demonstrating.
Thanks so much for all your videos. I love the way you explain everything. Although I’ve been knitting socks for quite awhile, I’m getting ready to knit my first short row heel and it will be with a contrasting color. Your instructions are so easy to follow so I’m not afraid to attempt this.
Amazing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!! ❤ I just learned how to knit this heel but I wasn’t very fond of the stripe in the middle - now you have shown me how to do it without the stripe .
Love your tutorials, I am also in my mid sixties and love to see new techniques. Knitting socks has always been an absorbing task for me. I now understand better how cable type needles are used but love the four needle technique. The down side is looking after the tension carefully. Thank you
Yes, I am currently knitting a pair of socks on 4 needles, but my favorite is two circulars. when making a video, I have to choose which method to us. It is always a gamble. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I found it so hard to find a good tutorial for my Toe Up with a GSR heel, in my own language. Googled in English, found you, and you saved me! No I also need to get the better stitches too, but thank you. Thank you also for seeing it through to how to finish it up nicely, those holes and all. My foot has a "high wrist", so I also need to find a way of nicely increase the width proportionally, preferably on the instep side just opposite from making the heal, not many sock patterns bother about that. I guess I must create my own pattern for my own feet, of course. Any suggestions otherwise? I made it with my first socks ever and your video, using the first example also, colours fitted nicely into the contrast colours. Thanks again!
For "high arches" I find that heel flap with turn and gussets is easier to alter to give more stitches around the instep. Make the heel flap 2 or 4 rows longer and therefor pick up more gusset stitches. This gives the extra circumference at the instep. Happy knitting.
Hello Suzanne. You’re one of the most skilled knitters I’ve ever come across so it’s only natural to go to you with my question. I’ve searched high and low but can’t find a good guide for the following : A sleeve cap knitted with GSR and stripes - changing color every 2 or 4 rows. I need to learn this technique so make symmetrical stripes that matches the body of a sweater - I hope I’m explaining it in a good way 😄 If you know a good technique please point me in the direction of it .. either here on TH-cam or online otherwise. Thanks for all your wonderful videos ❤️ Kind regards, Mie
this is a great question. I think your best bet would be to learn how to do contiguous sleeves. This would allow you to carry stripes from the body to the sleeve perfectly. The short row method, whether GSR or otherwise may not match exactly row to row from the body to the sleeve. Also, changing colors at each end of the short rows is going to present their own set of problems and may not look very tidy. I think you will love the contiguous sleeve method. Google it.
I’ve searched your videos and was wondering if you’ve done one on after thought heels. That’s something I’d be interested in seeing your explanation for.
Thank you for the tutorial, great job. Have a little problem though. I believe I follow the instructions, (well I guess not), but when I finish the heel (second method) I have the main color on the wrong side. I cannot figure what I'm doing wrong?
I watched your video and it has helped me but I wonder after you did the wrap and turns and skipped to the end of the heel... Did you just continue knitting straight back and forth to finish the heel? I knitted all my double stitches together, did the wrap and turns and am stumped. I realize that knitting the rest of the heel is not that much work and can easily be ripped back and re-knitted but if I don't have to I'd rather not.
Thank you Suzanna for ur videos. I still have a question about the heel stitches, do they have to be the first half of the round? Or it doesn’t really matter, which half should be knitted as the heel or as instep. Bcz in the beginning of the video, you mention that the tail of the main color should be on the left side.😢
This is a great question. You can choose one long circular and use magic loop, 2 24" circulars and use two at once or dpns. It is personal preference. The techniques are the same.
Thank you so much your videos have taught me so much about knitting and I love learning new things and new ways of doing old things. 😊 I do have a question, I knit my socks on one needle, is it possible to do this method on the one long needle? Thank you again 💓
This is such a great question. I have seen short row heels with additional rows at the leg edge, but they really do not increase the depth of the instep, which is the problem with high arches. I have exceptionally high arches, and although I can wear short row heels, I much prefer heel flap and gusset style heels. If the sock is a plain sock with no particular patterning happening over the instep, you can get away with the short row heel, but if there is stranding or any other type of patterning that will fall over the instep, the short row heel will cause the fabric to stretch over the instep and distort the patterning. Look at lots of hand knit socks on feet, with attention to the instep and you will see what I mean. This would be a great video topic. Thank you Elaine. Happy knitting.
thanks for this super-duper video! One question: this type of heel can be very shallow depending on the foot, if you knit the second type the instep has two fewer rows no? The use of the neon yarn is genius!
Thank you for your observation. Actually, the traditional German Short Row Heel, as shown in the first example has two more rows than other short row heels, due to the two rows which go all away around the sock. The second example, because of the added two rows to compensate for the loss of the stripe around the foot, has exactly the same number of rows as the first example. You can even count them in the cover picture if want. But, overall, your comment is correct, short row heels are shorter than heel flap/gusset heels. I have really high arches and prefer the heel flap/gusset style fo heel, but can still wear short row heels if I have to.
@@SuzanneBryan For some reason I thought the second way without the stripe around the instep would make the heel just a smidge deeper and that could be a good thing. Now I don't know. lol
To follow-up on heel depth w short row heels - if we initially divide the stitches with the center section a couple of stitches less will that make a slightly bigger/deeper heel? For example, starting heel with 36 st = divide them 13, 10, 13? Or too lopsided?
recently i've been trying the short row toe method and i really love the look of this heel but not sure on how to do it on a toe with the two stockinette rows.
I'm not quite sure you would do the the extra rows when doing a toe, since you don't have an instep. Cause your foot goes in where the extra rows are . I LOVE the GSR toe , it fits me so well lol and I think it's pretty. I could be wrong about this I'm still kinda new compared to most people but just from my experience in GSR toes I don't think the extra rows are possible.
It is personal preference. I use double pointed needles, 2 circulars or magic loop. they all work pretty much the same for me. But each person has their preference and that is just fine. Knitting is for everyone and there is no one right or wrong way. Happy knitting.
