This is the BEST video. I watched 3 others before I found your tutorial. I could not figure it out at all prior to seeing your step by step instructions. You made it so much easier and completely understandable. THANK YOU!! You are terrific....
Another good teacher, imo, is VeryPinkKnits. She keeps things a bit more elementary, and her videos are older - some are 10 years ago. I like seeing different people give explanations- eventually it sinks in.
I am not knitting socks. Just German short rows on a sweater's neck. I am really left handed and knit continental style. This is the ONLY tutorial --and I've watched several--where the instructor actually shows what they are doing and explains what happens. I have watched it every time I need to be reminded about double stitches and German short rows, esp since parts of the authors of this pattern think I read their minds.!
As someone who has ALWAYS given up on socks when I get to the heel, YOUR video was clear, slow enough, and visually understandable! I just completed my first heel EVER!!!! THANK YOU! I FEEL so confident in socks now! I have a TON of sock yarn that hasn't been used! Thank you! Projects will get done!😂
I realize this might be a bit much to post as a comment... I am SO grateful that you, Norman, spend your time making these videos. I tried to pick up knitting for years and have failed repeatedly. I've really wanted to learn, because my mom was an amazing knitter - she passed away while I was still a kid, and this has been a way for me to, as an adult, reconnect with or at least, honor, some of her passions. We did not have a very good relationship, but I want to remember her for all the beautiful and good things she did and was, and knitting was one of her skills and passions. I am proud to say, that I've made my first pair of socks and and currently working on my second - along with a knitted sweater, which is for my 5 yo daughter, whom I partly named after my mother. It feels very full circle and healing, to be able to knit something for my daughter, which she would have done, had she still been here. That was a very long way of saying THANK YOU, but I did want to show the magnitude of something so simple as a craft and for you to know, that while you make a living (I hope) out of this channel, you do SO much more than that. So thank you, from a daughter, a mother and now also a knitter, in Denmark.
Well, actually this channel just works because I have people supporting me on patreon. And even then it's a stretch. I have been considering to stop quite a few times already
Your tutorials always my go to! This short row heel made me enjoy the process of sock knitting. No fussing with flaps or picking up stitches. Thanks Norman!
Well to be fair, there are probably a million ways to knit short rows and it's not like u cannot slip purlwise either. I guess it boils down to which way you find it easier to pull down the working yarn.
"A perfect fit for everone with a slender foot." Slender is the key word there. Thank you for your honesty about that. For those who have a deep instep it definitely needs some modifications.
Indeed. If I am honest here, I never use this heel for myself (only for my mum) and always a flap and gusset heel. I feel it's so much more comfortable and once you did three or four, I don't even see how it's harder to knit.
I can’t tell you enough how much I truly enjoyed this video. I always hated knitting socks because of the heel but this video is a GAME CHANGER. I’m so excited to make so many socks with this method. You did an amazing job. Thank you so much!
This has been the clearest & easiest tutorial for gsr I’ve seen. I started my first sock & had so much trouble with the standard heal flap that I ripped it out. The slipped stitches made the tension far too tight. I was going to do an afterthought heel, but this looks easier than I thought. Plus, there’s no bulk or seam. Danke schoen for this tutorial. Have a great day.
Excellent tutorial! I always had trouble understanding the second half of the turn. That is no longer a problem for me.I liked, and subscribed immediately. You are now my go to for knitting. Thank you very much

Hello Norman, just want to let you know how much your tutorials have helped. I started knitting about 30 years ago and had to lay it down due to family raising and long work hours for 27 years. I recently picked my knitting back up and started with some socks. I’m basically self-taught, and anytime I have pattern instructions I’m not sure about or don’t understand, your channel is the first go-to for me. You explain your instructions clearly and in-depth and your video is set so its very easy to see what you are demonstrating. Please keep up what you are doing. You’re the best!
Thanks a lot, Norman, for this and every single vídeo that you post ⭐️. Your knitting is so neat and professional, and your teaching method so well recorded and explained, that I learn so much from you. Best regards from the Canary Islands ⭐️💫
Honestly, I was scared of knitting for a long time, but your videos have shaken that fear. I enjoy watching your videos, they inspire me. Thank you for all these tutorials.
OMG, I can't tell you how many tutorials I have watched, but just could not get the short heel row to look right. Until now! Thank you, Norman, for the great tutorial!! My sock heel looks wonderful. I have found my go-to for all things knitting.
I appreciate how difficult it is to explain something so clearly in a second language.... I knitted my first ever sock this week.... but the 'afterthought heel' seems a bit untidy for me so I am having another go. I assume it will work just as well with a toe up sock.... your method really makes sense ( thanks to your mum) . I wish I could knit the way you do with the yarn in the left hand, I have tried but don't have the dexterity.... very skilled. Thank you...
I have been struggling with German short rows for years. I finally found your channel and this demonstration and it all clicked. The key for me was adding the stitch markers. What a game changer. Thank you, thank you so very much for the clear explanation❤❤❤
Excellent instruction!! I wish I'd discovered German short rows on my very first pair of socks! Your video is super clear and I appreciate the repeat of the initial double stitch move!
I realized 2 things I was doing wrong. I knitted only one row around and got holes on the return, now with 2 rounds AND knitting through the back loop I achieved nicer heels. Thank you so much for your work on utube, the closeups are terribly appreciated.
I'm also here to learn short rows for a sweater neck. Always been scared of short rows and avoided them like the plague. This is another clear and concise explanation of the technique from Norman. I'd love to see a separate short video on German short rows only on the other channel but this is great and helps me immensely!!
New to knitting over all, so I was intimidated by sock knitting. Add to that the name of this technique, and I had been struggling to think "how on Earth am I going to understand this in writing?!? Well, thanks to you, I have set the anxiety aside and have a wonderful, clear understanding of the German Short Rows!! Thank you, Norman!!
Normal you are a genius! Here in the USA the knitting teachers do tutorial videos on this German Short Row Hell, but they don't make it easy and once I made a pair of 2-at-a-time, Toe-Up socks and I was so bewildered I made 2 short row heels on EACH sock! HAHAHA! I cannot wait for your knitting instruction class or your book to appear, I so grateful for your written pattern, it is THE EASIEST pattern for this heel I've ever found. Thank You So Much from Colorado
Very talented, I knitted along with your tutorial, produced a heel 😢I could not believe I could do it, but I did 😮, thank you again for showing your kindness and talents, I will have to repeat the process again 🎉.
Oh my God. You have explained and demonstrated the German Short Row Heel better than anyone else I have watched. I hated how the yard looked on the needles by ‘pulling up’ on the yarn to create the double stitch. This is not only better looking but easier as well. Thank you! You bet I subscribed.
Perfect heel for a Christmas stocking-nice even & smooth. It is so hard to find clear instructions in books with pictures or videos with clear instructions or this heel, but you do both!! Thank you so much!! I love love love your videos & they have been so helpful!! You are a really good teacher & thank you for using yarn (mostly light colored) so you can see the stitches on the video & in your instructions!! Thanks again!!
Thank you so much for such clear instructions! My pattern called for GSR but her written instructions AND her TH-cam video didn’t make any sense at all. You saved my project! ❤
Thank you so much for this tutorial! You explain and show how to perfectly do the short rows and how to do the step 3. I really need the visual and was able to execute the heel nicely for the first time. Thank you again!
always! I was taught my grandmother, schoolteachers and my mum for free. So I do feel it would be very insulting to their legacy and the generations that came before to charge for it
@@NimbleNeedles 'Good on you!' as the Kiwis say (where I live), or 'That's the spirit'. Auf Deutsch fällt mir leider nichts Entsprechendes ein. Thanks again!
I was looking for a toe up heel and learned that I have been knitting GSR wrong for seven years now 😂 thank you for this tutorial! It is very easy to understand 😊
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I was so confused reading my knitting pattern instructions and trying German short rows for the first time. You have made it so much clearer!
This is the best German short Row explanation and visual I have ever seen. I got a little tripped up not understanding that after the first series of sort rows that I should knit 2 full rounds which included ALL of the sock, not just the heel stitches. It’s not that he didn’t say it, but he didn’t show knitting them all so I thought I was supposed to knit 2 rows of heel in the stockinette stitch flat, which doesn’t work because you have to purl across half of the short row stitches and it looks wonky. I went back and watched carefully and realized my mistake and now all is good. Thank you.
Just in case. Almost all my tutorials have a linked blog post with the written instructions. So, the first link in the description will always take u there.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I will recommend your video for every knitter who has troubles with short row heel 😊 In Finland we call this type of heel 'tiimalasikantapää' i.e. hour glass heel.
Iv seen so many different videos but can’t understand how it’s done but this was explained perfectly and I’m sure il be able to make perfect heals now. Thank you for showing us
Great video tutorial, thank you. I have knitted German Short Rows for nearly 50 years but they were not called by that name. I have been procrastinating knitting socks because of the heel and now I am so relieved and going to cast on NOW thank you
Thank you Norman for a superb tutorial! This is what I’ll be using from now on. Now if I can figure out when to start the heel I’ll be set. That is my biggest struggle and no one seems to have good advice on this.

I wanted to let you know just ho much I appreciate the fact that you showed more than one way to work the double stitches. Options are so abundant and helpful in knitting!
Wow, those German short rows make a beautiful heel! I’ve been knitting for 50+ years but only learned about German short rows this week in Iris Schreier’s Neon Splash Shawl knit-along. She uses German short row technique to make pattern bands that look like repeating leaves.
Best video I found for this type of heel. I must say it’s not my favourite heel to make but it’s a must for some stripped patterns to make the sock look perfect.
I’m on my second pair of socks!! But I’m going to immediately start a third pair so I can try this heel! I can’t wait to show my mother this as well as she desperately wants to make socks. Thank you so much Norman!!!
@@NimbleNeedles yes! We celebrate Christmas and I’m super excited to make many many socks!! I watched your video again last night and I think it’s looking easier and easier and I’m very excited! Thank you!
You are such a brilliant teacher. I have been wanting to start knitting socks for a while now but just couldn't understand the whole 'German short rows' part. Couldn't see the point of pulling the stitch over on a sweater neck back either, except that it must be some kind of place marker. Call me dense. But now I get it and I can start knitting my own socks, finally, and properly understand how to do GSR on a sweater back. THANK YOU!! I will enjoy my affordabel real wool socks. And sweaters.
Hi Norman. Thank you for this great video. I really enjoy this German short row heel for my baby socks. With the first I discovered that although this is a simple heel in theory it is very unforgiving and if, for instance you drop a stitch it is nearly impossible to sort it out. I ended up doing my first heel 5 times. The second heel I paid close attention and deliberately slowed down and got it done in 1. I will confess that I think I did 1 too many rows in the heel, I think watching your video, yet again, you knit across the entire row when you are knitting the two last double stitches together. I have therefore ended up with a couple of little holes. I have played with the yarn and moved it along. But this was my learning for next time. Thank you once again, love this heel, love this video ❤
Thank you for making this video. I think it's the easiest short row heel I've ever done and there are no holes!! Yay! I have made two pairs so far and now I've started a toe up version and can't wait to get to the heel section - which I used to dread. Thanks again so much.
This is probably the best video I watched about the short row heel ! I am German myself but I didn’t quite understand what I was supposed to do in the other tutorials but I think I finally understand how to do it
This is definitely the best boomerang heel tutorial for me as a continental knitter (working yarn on my left hand). Thanks a lot for explaining the tech in such a clear and precise manner❤️❤️!
Very happy to hear that. And I too know the feeling. A lot of tutorials/videos are for English knitters - and that can sometimes be a bit more difficult to translate!
This is such a better tutorial than what I was using for sock heels. I kept getting little gaps I didn't like. Just finished my first heel using this tutorial. Look soooo much better. Thank you again so much, you are amazing.

weell.....i would say then you haven't looked properly. I have to sock tutorials here on my channel. one top down and one toe up and I speak about this very detailed: th-cam.com/video/PxiCUqujZnY/w-d-xo.html
Nicely demonstrated the ever popular German short rows .
glad you found my video was helpful!
So clear explanations... Thank you for showing us this technique! You are a good teacher.
I wanted to let you know just ho much I appreciate the fact that you showed more than one way to work the double stitches. Options are so abundant and helpful in knitting!
I actually am currently working on a new video on short rows with like 10 different ways to knit them (so stay tuned!)
Wow, those German short rows make a beautiful heel! I’ve been knitting for 50+ years but only learned about German short rows this week in Iris Schreier’s Neon Splash Shawl knit-along. She uses German short row technique to make pattern bands that look like repeating leaves.
Oh wow! yeah..i know these kind of pattersn. Can look spectacular if you use a contrasting color!
Danke sehr! Thank you for the easy to follow tutorial! Working on my first pair of socks now 💪
Best video I found for this type of heel. I must say it’s not my favourite heel to make but it’s a must for some stripped patterns to make the sock look perfect.
thanks for your tutorial 😊 you've made knitting socks so simple
that's because it is...heh...at least once you'Ve wrapped your mind around it! :P
Excellent video with simple, clear instructions. I was able to do it on my first try! Thank you!
I’m on my second pair of socks!! But I’m going to immediately start a third pair so I can try this heel!
I can’t wait to show my mother this as well as she desperately wants to make socks.
Thank you so much Norman!!!
and if you hurry, you'll be ready in time for christmas and havve a nice present (if you celebrate that is)
@@NimbleNeedles yes! We celebrate Christmas and I’m super excited to make many many socks!! I watched your video again last night and I think it’s looking easier and easier and I’m very excited! Thank you!
@@masuganut2082 ha! mission accomplished :P
A big THANK YOU you have explained and shown short row sock heels beautifully, I am so so grateful to you. Stay safe and keep well. You are a treasure
Thank you! You too!
Brilliant instructions, the first time ever I understood GSR
awesome! glad you did it!
Great tutorial , well explained, I just finished the heel of my first sock, I never dared knitting socks. Great teacher and great channel
Thanks again so much.
awesome. and you will notice that even the heel flap version I use in the toe-up video is barely more difficult!
Great video! Thanks for helping knit my first sock :)
This is a great way to knit the German short row. Thank you so much
This is probably the best video I watched about the short row heel ! I am German myself but I didn’t quite understand what I was supposed to do in the other tutorials but I think I finally understand how to do it
toll das zu hören. Und wenn es fragen gibt, immer gerne hier in den kommentaren stellen :)
@@NimbleNeedles mach ich danke
Brilliant video Norman, thank you. Clear and concise.
Thank you, Norman! Making my first pair of socks and the pattern calls for a German short row heel. Your tutorial makes it so easy! 💙💙
awesome. Wishing you much sucess with your first pair!
Thank you so much for this video! I couldn't have finish my socks without your instructions!
Great tutorial! I didn't understand what a short row heel was and within minutes, I felt like an expert. 😁
heh. Probably because you secretly already are and it only takes the right words to let your inner master knitter shine!
Love your clear concise demonstration. Thank you!
Thank you for your really clear instructions. This is the best heel pattern I've come across. 😀
Wonderful! I love your presentation. Thank You
Thank you so much❤️👌🙏
Your tutorial makes so much easier to follow… finally I Got It🙏
This is an excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to make it. I have been knitting for years and have never made heels in this way. I am going to start a pair and try it.
Thank you for sharing this technique! It is so much easier than the traditional way! 🥰
you are very welcome gladys! Have fun knitting it :)
Thank you
I think my next pair of socks will be cuff down. I'm afraid for gussets ex ex
Now I See it can be easy
You make my day
