A manual car can be stopped without the main foot break by dropping it into 1st gear and using the engine to slow the car to a speed where the hand break will stop it.
That's true but you also take a chance of over reving the engine and destroying the entire power train lol although when watching the show I think they tried to put it into reverse without using the clutch. Why didn't they use the engage the clutch put into reverse and them release the clutch that would in theory do the trick instead of grinding the gears
@@terryduling4773 You are correct there is a risk of causing the engine to jump to high revs as if you drop strait to first but this is an emergency step when you don't have the time to go through each gear in descending sequence first. As for the clutch this should be used no matter what gear you are changing to and can be used to reduce the over revving slightly. On modern cars if the wheels are in forward motion there is a safety system inside the gearbox that blocks entering reverse even if the clutch is pressed.
35:00 the tennisball trick used to work on older cars. Saw it done in school at a crime and safety event we went to to show us how easy it is to gain access to a vehicle. Think it only works on older locks from the 70s or 80s though.
@jordanknutson3244 I'm old, so it was when "keys" were actually "keys" that had to go in the lock and not just buttons on a remote. Maybe it was a trick, but it wasn't as simple as having a button to press at the same time in your pocket or by someone else. I've had a look since, and I think it only worked on a specific model of Volvos from the early 80s. Wasn't about making sure we locked our car. That trick and others they showed us were about getting in even though it's locked. It was pointing out that it's pretty easy to get into cars quickly, so you shouldn't leave anything in your car that can be seen. Plus, car windows break easy, so don't leave your wallet on the dashboard or something silly like that.
@pawemichalski5043 ??? Modern keys don't even need you to press a button, just have it in your pocket when you grab the door handle. I just mean it was on a car that didn't have a key or key fob with a button to remote unlock.
It absolutely worked, I saw cctv of someone breaking into my car this way around 20 tears ago. It was demonstrated on the popular car TV show top gear on my specific car model and within 3 months of the TV show my car got broken into 4 times
I like how they can buy the skull of a real human being, punch it and make every kind of stuff to it and it's okay, but somehow stabbing a bible it's "offensive"
If anyone is curious what would happen, there is actually a way to put a automatic into reverse while going forward. In drag racing there is something called a transmission brake or transbrake. It's used to engage 1st and reverse gear at the same time. The result is the car won't move. The idea is this allows the driver to apply alot or even full throttle at the starting line to help accelerate the car from a dead stop. If you were to do this with the car in motion one of two things will happen. Either the transmission will brake/blow up or the drive wheels will lock up which would be the same as locking up the brakes on those wheels. In other words, at best you would have just the drive wheels lock up as opposed to locking up all four tires with the brakes and the car would stop it would just take longer than with the brakes.
Car lock myth was true as long as pneumatic central locks were in use. It simply can't work with electric actuators and it would work with pneumatic only if certain model was using vacuum to open and pressurizing to close so when pumping air into the lock you'd be actuating lock piston the correct way otherwise you'd need to suck air off the lock.
This assumes that the lock is somehow connected to the pneumatic system and not actuating a valve... this also assumes that there are no leaks between the door and the covers on the inside, I find it really really unlikely that such a car existed ever..
@@SuperUltimateLPno it was included in like, safety seminars at school with the local cops. it's a lie told to children to get them to lock their things when they're older.
21:00 - "Things didn't go exactly according to plan....but it couldn't have gone better." YES THEY COULD HAVE, ADAM! You JUST described how they could have gone better!
The reverse stopping myth does work on older cars. Back in the 80's use to go in reverse then slam into Drive. Would do awesome burn outs Only downside is blowing the transmission
That doesn't work cause you can't run an engine in reverse. If the transmission doesn't break then the engine will. But that won't happen cause the forward momentum of the car will easily overpower to grip of the clutch. The clutch plates will just bounce off each other as they did with the mythbusters or the drive train will snap. It's not the designed to take the force of a car at full speed. After all the force applied to the clutch and drive train is as if you were to try to go from a dead stop to full speed instantly which of course the car isn't powerful enough to do. It would just be excess weight to make the clutch and shaft 100 times stronger than the maximum power the engine can give.

To put the manual in reverse you'd have to lock up the drive wheel so if rear wheel drive use the handbrake and then switch to reverse and clutch dump as you release the handbrake
Well if you put the car into reverse while going forward you just rip the teeth right off the gear in the transmission. No Idea what happens in an automatic or dual clutch sequential transmission though but I reckon it's similar. If you find yourself in a runaway car for whatever reason your best chance of stopping would be, putting the car into neutral i.e. knocking it out of gear, this way the car can't accelerate anymore, and then you just joink the handbrake. That should stop the car even if the engine is at it's rev limit. Happened to my mom once in an old VW Bus when the spring underneath the gas pedal broke and would just go flat.
