  • We source and install a two-way self closing gate latch. A huge upgrade from a cheap standard latch and a simple way to fix a hard to open gate.

    We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version th-cam.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

    Thats a great idea. I have the same problem with my back gate and I have been looking for ways to attach a better latch ( using a metal wire thats runs over the top of the gate) it's useless and my dog has gotten out several times due to poor latch installed. I also want to attach a gate spring closure device but with the gate being uneven like your I havent found a usable spring. If I add a block of wood like you did to even it out thats should work. Thans very much, very helpful.

    Good job, and a good latch. But with a chunky midrail around the fence, I wondered why - instead of a random thickening block on the gate style - that midrail was not continued across the gate. It would be aesthetically more pleasing than adding a random block to mount the latch. It would have looked less like an afterthought....Function and form' is harmony!

    Is there a typical distance between the gate and the fence part for the latch to be installed correctly? The is a small notch on the latch seems for the purpose to stop the gate (not to go inside), but to use the notch the slit between the gate and the fence should be very small. I'm afraid if the wood will get wet in rain it will spread and the gate door is too tight against the fence part. Thank you for a great film.

    • @jofalltrades1816
      @jofalltrades1816  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the comment. The latch itself is very thin, about 1/4" or 6mm thick with the 2 pieces together, so the gap between the gate and the post can be quite small and it will still fit. If the gate posts did shift around it could certainly bind the gate when opening and closing. My gap between the gate and the post is 3/4" (19mm) and it might go down to 1/2" (13mm) when it moves. The gate is tighter to the hinge side to allow room for the latch.
      If the gap were to get wider, you can adjust the strike on the back that goes into the latch to compensate for this. Hope I understood you correctly.

    • @olenaerhardt7725
      @olenaerhardt7725 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jofalltrades1816 I see, thank you. My gap on this gate was about 3/8" or 10 mm. I installed the latch though, hopefully it won't be too tight after rain. Probably the purpose of that notch on the latch is different that I thought it is for. It will be less guessing for the 2nd gate I need to do after your explanations. Thank you again.

    Nobody ever talks about the minimum gap needed to install paddle latches. If the gap is too small, the paddle will run into the gate on a double gate install then the edge of the gate has to be notched out. I hate those large gaps in fence gates.

      @@jofalltrades1816 Thanks. But my gate/doors are "French door" style. Both doors can open, like if you want a larger opening to let an RV through. They are solid metal with only a quarter-inch space between the doors when they're shut. It has a simple latch that works...but you can't open it from the outside because you can't reach through the door. Really dumb design I guess. Thanks for the reply.

      Sounds solid and secure. Another idea is a locking latch that I've seen work on double doors, but would involve drilling a hole through one of the gates and they would have to open outward. Good luck!
