@@digitalsmithy Not sure what type of fence you have. However, I built mine with all treated wood. I hand-picked each board. Also, I used treated 2X4s for the horizontal supports and treated 4X4 for the vertical poles too. I chose to build my fence because all of the prebuilt fences, at the home centers looked like crap to me. I always use "Cabot" stain which is expensive, but, IMO worth it ($200 for a 5 gallon bucket). As mentioned, I stain my entrire wooden fence every 5-7 years and I use a garden sprayer which allows the stain/sealer to get into every nook & cranny of my fence. Lastly, I used stainless steel screws for the entire fence not galvanized nails.
In areas of frost...along with digging your post holes deep enough, you can also bell shape the bottom of the post hole.That will prevent the frost from pushing the post and concrete up.

Tip #7 Have your yard surveyed before even thinking about building a fence. I built my fence inside of my property line 20 years ago and my neighbor recently sued me for adverse possession, (squatters rights) of the land not fenced on the property line. He now legally owns that strip. It was very expensive to litigate.
When I bought my home 30+ years ago. My home's previous owner had tall hedges planted 15 feet short of my property line. My understanding was, my home's previous owner did this because of the utility easement between the two properties and not wanting to cut the grass. One of the very first things I did when I moved into my house was put up wooden fence poles & a fence on my side a few inches short of the actual property line (per my "Plat-Of-Survey" which I received at my home's closing). I was very aware of the issue you described. The neighbor who was benefiting told his wife, who then told me that he enjoyed having a much bigger backyard with my land and did not like the fence.
You can build a wood gate and make it work. A brace at the proper angle, coming up from the hinge side bottom to the top opposite corner and screwing it all together. For added insurance against sagging you can add a 1/4 inch all thread rod in the other direction and raise any future sag.
A couple of these are not necessarily mistakes, but aesthetic choices. A stair step design using pre-made panels can look quite nice, especially on a gentle slope, and in some cases a custom fence that contours the ground that goes up and down just looks like the person didn't grade properly. Transitions can look nice, but its not really a fencing mistake to not have one, as it doesn't really impact the function or longevity of the fence. The rest, completely agree.

He wasn't saying the CHOICE of HOW the contractor decides to build the transition is a mistake, but rather.... making mistakes while trying to do the transition. Looking for some advice on my diy fence project. I plan on using 4 or 5" steel posts, 7' plus below ground of 4', minimum1/8 thick, either epoxy primed and painted or powder coated. Our frost line is three feet, we are in Canada where summer is the best two months of the year. My question is for sake of costs, can I use a cheaper galvanized round tube such as emt or possibly a couple lengths of angle iron to create a cage, and transition to square below the ground with no issues, should that transition be contained within the concrete, I am aware you need to take precautions when welding galvanized metal. I have also been told you should not embed galvanized into concrete because the zinc will react with the lime in the concrete. Curious if you had any thoughts on this type of fence, or proper construction methods. Thanks

I would cut what what ever is there down to the dirt douse it in round up and put rocks over it then put your fence up. After that there isn’t much you can do other than keep the area inside the fence trimmed. Hopefully your neighbor will tear Down the shorter fence and enjoy yours lol
I agree with Dannylex; however, but be sure to discuss your fence plans with your neighbor, especially if they have kids OR pets, to avoid any accidents. I put up a 6' shadow-box privacy fence right next to my neighbor's 4' (ugly) chainlink fence. After a few years, he removed his fence and is now enjoying mine.

Hello there! I’m planning to build a fence for my pet rabbits, which will be about 2ft high. You’ve mentioned to make sure the fence post to be buried deep enough (up to 2ft according the video), but how about for a much lower fence for these rabbits? What’s your recommendation of the depth to dig? I’m a viewer from Malaysia, thank you for sharing these mistakes cause these type of fences aren’t common here! 😄
With rabbits you want to bury chicken wire under the ground to a minimum of 18 inches underground. Rabbits love to dig but they usually don't go deeper than that

Absolutely, it’s just not worth the risk. It’s a free service and is typically performed within 3 business days. There’s no reason to take a chance! Great question!
I just replaced both my gates with wooden frames using the existing wooden posts. There was no need to replace the posts. I used some high quality hinges that can easily be adjusted to compensate for future sag which was the key to the whole thing. For new fences, I agree that using metal posts and frames for the gates are the way to go. I still have to do the staining and sealing but I'm real happy with the results and peace of mind knowing it can easily be adjusted. The original fence frame was made very poorly and used inferior hardware so no wonder it fell apart. My neighbor had a brand new fence installed and their gate was a metal frame gate on wooden posts, and that thing started to sag almost immediately because of terrible hardware for hinges and undersized lag bolts to the wooden posts. All the little details matter. I used 1/2 inch galvanized carriage bolts on mine that go through the entire 6x6 post to hold my super hinges.
Hey Joe I have a question I'm hoping you can get answered for me so there's a 10-ft empty section from two wooden posts where this lady wants a gate put in now she said she don't want the gate as tall as the rest of the fence it's just to keep a little dog in the yard now is there a way I could make that transitioning piece into a gate itself or how would you go about that
That’s likely going to depend on your city and county’s regulation. In most of the cities in our area, fencing in the front yard has to be 4’ tall or less. The front yard is defined as any part of the yard that is forward of the front corners of the dwelling.

I mistakenly used a brad nailer when I did my fence obviously I'm having pickets back out now... what type of nail gun do I need for the pickets? A lot of what I read online says 2 inch framing nailer but there's no way at 2 in nail is not going to stick out the other side sense the pickets are less than half an inch and a two-by-four is technically only an inch and a half wide. Thoughts?
I know you probably already finished but if someone else has this question I would tell you to shoot them at an angle. It will also help prevent them from backing out. Alternate too shoot one at an inside angle one at an outside angle. So they look like a V shape or an upside down V shape
I had a pressured treated wood fence installed here in south georgia by a coworker. He and his brother ran a fence building business in Florida for years and my fence was done to perfection. You dont mention, but they strongly recommended putting foil tape around the posts to protect from acidity/alkalinity? of cement (we used Quickwrete). I dont know if the carbonate bedrock of Florida had anything to do with it. Also, naphthalene and other phthalates are carcinogens, so Ms. Horizontal fence building wonder and post dipper should be wearing a respirator!
I plan on using the tips because the fence put up by the prior owner the top and middle 2x4 twisted and made the man made fence slats twisted now. it is a mess. I am not sure why the 8 foot 2x4 twisted.
Ahhhh man don't do it. Our neighbors had that done yrs ago, & when you wanna replace/repair it, you gotta jackhammer through it... So not fun~ even watching was backbreaking. He gave up & rebuilt/moved the fence line inward, which relinquished valuable property & space. Not to mention if a fence line exists like that for several years, it becomes the new property boundary. Not good!! I know that because as a kid my dad's neighbor had his fence on our property to graze horses, but when the property sold we couldn't move the fence bc it had been there too long & became the new boundary, so we lost 30ft of land along that side of our property.

Here in Texas all fence builders last the top 2x4 flat and they warp like crazy. Why don't they install vertical like the other two? Send to me the fence would last longer . My neighbor behind me decided it would be a good idea to attach hanging baskets to my pressure treated 4x4 post. I asked them to stop but will the current baskets or screws into the post cause a problem?
@@JoeEverest Thank you. I am also concerned about the elephant ears they have planted next to my fence with soaker hoses that keep the soil moist for the elephant ears. Is that something to worry about? The 4x4 post are cemented in the ground and I imagine at least 2 feet deep. I can't tell if the ground around the poles is real wet or not. I guess I need to dig a little to see how much moisture is in the ground but the plants are actually on my property as my property line is about 14 inches beyond my fence. I don't want to make an issue out of things that are not an issue but at the cost of lumber I can't afford to replace this 8 foot privacy fence.
Is it normal to have a gap in the gate of the fence? I had a 6' shadowbox fence built to enclose the backyard of my end unit townhouse, I called the builder back because, while the fence itself is correct and I'm satisfied, there is a gap in the gate where it opens and closes. The builder came back out and said that there has to be a gap that wide so that the gate can close properly but it's like anyone can stand there and see right into my backyard from the gap. To me, it appears that the gap can be closed a little because there are holes near where the hinges were placed that looks like the hinges could be moved over a bit to close the gap. Any thoughts on this?
Yes, typically there are gaps both on the hinge side and latch side. These accommodate the expansion and contraction of the materials throughout the different seasons of the year.

Clear sealer! You can power wash it every year or two, cleaning it and refreshing the beautiful nature color. Then quickly roll or spray on a new layer of clear sealer. The maintenance is more frequent than when staining, but it's far easier because NO sanding is required.
I wish I would have watched this a couple weeks ago. The only thing that I am doing bad is using 4x4 pressure treated posts set in 3 80lb bags of concrete for the gate posts.

Hi, please recommend to me (to us everybody who watches your videos), a good brand of stain and sealer for fences and treated wood, I would like to stain my fence and my gazebo poles. I am planning to apply that kind of stain that is fluid almost like water, that is not applied with brush but with small towels. And for fence post: Can I use galvanized tube poles instead of wooden ones? will metal poles last more than wood? Thanks in advance.
How can I build a custom fence that backs onto the neighbors fence on 3 sides. We had our fence installed by the contractor but its not to code. We had the framing side facing outward toward the neighbors fence with the nice side facing inwards. The inspector did not approve it and we must take it down and reverse the process. How can we do that if the 3 neighbors fence is directly against our property lines? We can't nail the boards on the outside because their fence is in the way.
If you went with a vinyl fence product, they look the same from both sides and can be installed from the inside, but they're also way more expensive. Otherwise for wood, you would have to pre-make panels and then attach them with 4 1/2"-5" long screws or lag screws from the inside of the 4x4. It's not ideal, and a major pain to do, but I've had to do it on several jobs that I've done, where I had the same situation :(
When you're the last one to build, your only choice is to move your fenceline in far enough so there's enough space between them to get in and nail up your boards.
@@FrostyCardi Can I install 24" wide vertical boards? I have to correct the the work of the previous contractor there are alot of boards to remove as is. If I can put up 4 fence boards per 8ft wide fence panel, that would save me a whole lot of time.

Build it deep enough that the rabbits do not go under, and predators cannot dig underneath to eat the the rabbits.

Like the ones you see on highways for noise reduction but obviously not that big of poles just lil ones for a yard thanks

Where do you actually get individual pieces for a fence(compared to prebuilt fence panels)? I’d like to do mine but idk where to start
I just replaced both my gates with wooden frames using the existing wooden posts. There was no need to replace the posts. I used some high quality hinges that can easily be adjusted to compensate for future sag which was the key to the whole thing. For new fences, I agree that using metal posts and frames for the gates are the way to go. I still have to do the staining and sealing but I'm real happy with the results and peace of mind knowing it can easily be adjusted. The original fence frame was made very poorly and used inferior hardware so no wonder it fell apart. My neighbor had a brand new fence installed and their gate was a metal frame gate on wooden posts, and that thing started to sag almost immediately because of terrible hardware for hinges and undersized lag bolts to the wooden posts. All the little details matter. I used 1/2 inch galvanized carriage bolts on mine that go through the entire 6x6 post to hold my super hinges.

Hey Joe I have a question I'm hoping you can get answered for me so there's a 10-ft empty section from two wooden posts where this lady wants a gate put in now she said she don't want the gate as tall as the rest of the fence it's just to keep a little dog in the yard now is there a way I could make that transitioning piece into a gate itself or how would you go about that

Question ok we want to build a fence on the side of my neighbor in the front . Does it have to be 4 feet in height or can we build it 5 or 6 feet .
That’s likely going to depend on your city and county’s regulation. In most of the cities in our area, fencing in the front yard has to be 4’ tall or less. The front yard is defined as any part of the yard that is forward of the front corners of the dwelling.
Our minimum depth here is 4-6 feet, because of the Frontline. This transition looks excellent!

Both, it just depends on who you ask. We prefer to use ring shank nails.
I mistakenly used a brad nailer when I did my fence obviously I'm having pickets back out now... what type of nail gun do I need for the pickets? A lot of what I read online says 2 inch framing nailer but there's no way at 2 in nail is not going to stick out the other side sense the pickets are less than half an inch and a two-by-four is technically only an inch and a half wide. Thoughts?
I know you probably already finished but if someone else has this question I would tell you to shoot them at an angle. It will also help prevent them from backing out. Alternate too shoot one at an inside angle one at an outside angle. So they look like a V shape or an upside down V shape

How do you keep it from bowing and warping
I had a pressured treated wood fence installed here in south georgia by a coworker. He and his brother ran a fence building business in Florida for years and my fence was done to perfection. You dont mention, but they strongly recommended putting foil tape around the posts to protect from acidity/alkalinity? of cement (we used Quickwrete). I dont know if the carbonate bedrock of Florida had anything to do with it. Also, naphthalene and other phthalates are carcinogens, so Ms. Horizontal fence building wonder and post dipper should be wearing a respirator!

I plan on using the tips because the fence put up by the prior owner the top and middle 2x4 twisted and made the man made fence slats twisted now. it is a mess. I am not sure why the 8 foot 2x4 twisted.

Ahhhh man don't do it. Our neighbors had that done yrs ago, & when you wanna replace/repair it, you gotta jackhammer through it... So not fun~ even watching was backbreaking. He gave up & rebuilt/moved the fence line inward, which relinquished valuable property & space. Not to mention if a fence line exists like that for several years, it becomes the new property boundary. Not good!! I know that because as a kid my dad's neighbor had his fence on our property to graze horses, but when the property sold we couldn't move the fence bc it had been there too long & became the new boundary, so we lost 30ft of land along that side of our property.

Here in Texas all fence builders last the top 2x4 flat and they warp like crazy. Why don't they install vertical like the other two? Send to me the fence would last longer .
Also can you get better strength with using deck screws. It's it worth the cost since I don't have a nail gun?

My neighbor behind me decided it would be a good idea to attach hanging baskets to my pressure treated 4x4 post. I asked them to stop but will the current baskets or screws into the post cause a problem?
@@JoeEverest Thank you. I am also concerned about the elephant ears they have planted next to my fence with soaker hoses that keep the soil moist for the elephant ears. Is that something to worry about? The 4x4 post are cemented in the ground and I imagine at least 2 feet deep. I can't tell if the ground around the poles is real wet or not. I guess I need to dig a little to see how much moisture is in the ground but the plants are actually on my property as my property line is about 14 inches beyond my fence. I don't want to make an issue out of things that are not an issue but at the cost of lumber I can't afford to replace this 8 foot privacy fence.

Is it normal to have a gap in the gate of the fence? I had a 6' shadowbox fence built to enclose the backyard of my end unit townhouse, I called the builder back because, while the fence itself is correct and I'm satisfied, there is a gap in the gate where it opens and closes. The builder came back out and said that there has to be a gap that wide so that the gate can close properly but it's like anyone can stand there and see right into my backyard from the gap. To me, it appears that the gap can be closed a little because there are holes near where the hinges were placed that looks like the hinges could be moved over a bit to close the gap. Any thoughts on this?
Yes, typically there are gaps both on the hinge side and latch side. These accommodate the expansion and contraction of the materials throughout the different seasons of the year.

Clear sealer! You can power wash it every year or two, cleaning it and refreshing the beautiful nature color. Then quickly roll or spray on a new layer of clear sealer. The maintenance is more frequent than when staining, but it's far easier because NO sanding is required.
I wish I would have watched this a couple weeks ago. The only thing that I am doing bad is using 4x4 pressure treated posts set in 3 80lb bags of concrete for the gate posts.

I'm trying to find how to repair a section of a fence panel that caught fire, I just need to repair the boards not the whole fence, and I need to replace the boards with freshly treated ones. But cannot find any videos on that. No one explains how close to put a freshly treated board up next to the other one to keep it from warping or spliting, or what size or type of screws or nails to use,

Hi, please recommend to me (to us everybody who watches your videos), a good brand of stain and sealer for fences and treated wood, I would like to stain my fence and my gazebo poles.
I am planning to apply that kind of stain that is fluid almost like water, that is not applied with brush but with small towels.
And for fence post: Can I use galvanized tube poles instead of wooden ones? will metal poles last more than wood?

Hi Joe, How much do you charge to put a fence?
How can I build a custom fence that backs onto the neighbors fence on 3 sides. We had our fence installed by the contractor but its not to code. We had the framing side facing outward toward the neighbors fence with the nice side facing inwards. The inspector did not approve it and we must take it down and reverse the process. How can we do that if the 3 neighbors fence is directly against our property lines? We can't nail the boards on the outside because their fence is in the way.
If you went with a vinyl fence product, they look the same from both sides and can be installed from the inside, but they're also way more expensive. Otherwise for wood, you would have to pre-make panels and then attach them with 4 1/2"-5" long screws or lag screws from the inside of the 4x4. It's not ideal, and a major pain to do, but I've had to do it on several jobs that I've done, where I had the same situation :(
When you're the last one to build, your only choice is to move your fenceline in far enough so there's enough space between them to get in and nail up your boards.
@@FrostyCardi Can I install 24" wide vertical boards? I have to correct the the work of the previous contractor there are alot of boards to remove as is. If I can put up 4 fence boards per 8ft wide fence panel, that would save me a whole lot of time.

How about building fences with 4x4 posts. It's done so often here in Canada and so many fail. Fences on expensive houses have 5x5's.
