    From the band's Web page:
East Coast Racer is about how “75 years ago, on 3rd July 1938, a streamlined locomotive called Mallard set the world speed record for steam trains, travelling at 126mph on a straight, downhill stretch of the East Coast Mainline.” Greg Spawton observes that “it wasn’t so much Mallard but the people who designed, made, fired and drove her that interested me. And it is their tale we tell over the 15 minutes or so of East Coast Racer.
It is a story with a wonderful list of main characters; designer Sir Nigel Gresley, his assistant Oliver Bulleid, fireman Tommy Bray and driver Joe Duddington. Alongside those with starring roles was a community of engineers and railwaymen who all played a part in the making of a legend. But, in the end, we come back to Mallard.
Émile Zola said: ‘Somewhere in the course of manufacture, a hammer blow or a deft mechanic’s hand imparts to a locomotive a soul of its own’. In this short sentence, Zola puts his finger on the connection between the maker and the machine. Mallard has outlived its creators but in it, this company of men and the work they carried out, lives on.”

Been a Passenger for quite a few years. If you liked this version, listen to the live version from King's Place from 2015. I like it even better. On another note, on October 2nd, a memorial and new gravestone for Joe Duddington and his wife was dedicated in Doncaster Hyde Park Cemetery. Joe and his wife were buried in an unmarked grave. Greg Spawton, bassist and songwriter, helped spread the word to their fans about this project. Donations from all sources allowed them to purchase not only the memorial, but a wooden carved bench depicting the Mallard was commissioned. The Big Big Train Facebook page is probably the most well run page on that platform. Just waiting for their first trip to North America, which is hopefully going to be announced in the near future.

Wow, pretty impressive. Not heard of them before.
I know you don't need another new band on the list but, i think you would like Riverside (Shrine of New Generation Slaves).
So now I have another band to explore, fun times!
You know, I missed so much music in the 90's and 2000's, raising a family and having various successes and failures in business.
Playing drums in a pub band here in NZ and AUS, and so on, but now I can relax and relive those lost decades of music and also revisit
my teenage music years, listening to the memories via good headphones and being totally astounded by how good it sounds.
Even in comparison to drug infused trips of the past.
So I am in a similar music journey to you, I guess, and it sure is nice to share this with you :-)

Their masterpiece in my view. You should delve into MASTERS OF LIGHT which is a live album of some of their best work. Their new album WELCOME TO THE PLANET sees them branching out into new and interesting areas. Their songs are quintessentially about the English community and tell stories about both ordinary and extraordinary people. This song is about the team of railway engineers who build a train that breaks the world speed record. Another track I adore is THE TRANSIT OF VENUS ACROSS THE SUN. There is a lovely and very moving version of it on TH-cam which is a rehearsal. Sadly David Longdon recently died in a tragic accident who is the main singer and one of the great creative forces - a terrific composer and multi instrumentalist as well as a great singer. This band has had a lot of setbacks but thorough it all they continue to make sublime music.

An absolute masterpiece. For me it should be up there with all the major prog classics.

Glad you liked it, and I can tell that you're totally feeling it the way we BBT fans do! Just after you say "this song is just soaring" the climactic lyric comes in with David Longdon singing "She flies!" - it's one of the great moments in modern prog music.

Surprised I missed this one. I checked out BBT a couple years ago( Folklore) and liked what I heard. I finally returned to them recently .... I've been enthralled for several weeks now. This one in particular just....... perfect.
Also realized I wasn't subscribed....not sure how that happened 🤣been a busy year!

I'm so glad you like this one. I think this is my introduction to BBT. Their new singer is great and they're working on new music with him. Not sure how or why YT unsubscribes people. It's always nice to see you here on my channel, you are an early supporter and I appreciate that and you. Let me know if there is anything I can react to that you think I might like, Todd.

This song is just brilliant. As a prog fan and railroad enthusiast this song gets me everytime.. Imho, best representation of modern Symphonic Prog Rock.

The live version is arguably much better; Merchants of light album.
