as an aspiring artist for a clothing company ive always beena graff writer first and all sorts of art styles are jus tweaked a bit and took to the streets with a touch of there own input and what im really trying to grasp now is the whole philosophy of calligraphy , and this really helped and appreciate your help and obvious sense and passion for art!
I've always be intimidated by handwriting (God bless my hand!), but your "pulling" theory and per-stroke approach is so inspiring. couldn't wait to try out on. thx Mark!
All my years of being a graffiti artist, i never thought of it as calligraphy until quite recently. That thought has opened up a whole world of inspiration though
so beautiful! I've only ever studied japanese and chinese calligraphy styles you've really inspired me into the english style now! you've given me a good starting point!
Rock on man, thanks for the kind words..my definition of art is any expression that comes from the person, so if it feels good to you, go for it and be the master of your style. Various logic is always interesting but your style will always be what comes out of you kind sir.
My mom left me some calligraphy pens and so I've become interested in it as well. Thank you for this great beginners video; you do beautiful work and I can't wait to try some of your suggestions!
I'm glad to see someone else who appreciates the typography used in graffiti, though it is all not so artistic as this many of them learn calligraphy before they do graffiti
I'm here actually to learn the old English style to incorporate into my graffiti! It's this craze called calligraffiti! Gonna use it on the streets thanks!
Hey Mark, I'm a copywriter and I'm wondering if I can help market you? Let me know what you think and we can exchange emails. You can check out my samples and published article on my website, if you wish. Good day! ~Evon Robinson Freelance Copywriter www.evonrobinsoncopy.com justtherightwords14@gmail.com
Absolutely *love* your style. I learned the traditional Olde English Scroll, but it lacks the elegance of what you did in this video. Could you please provide an actual link to your book for those of us who are interested in learning more? I have done marriage licenses, wedding invitations, Bible verses (my personal favorite), baby announcements, etc. Calligraphy is thoroughly enjoyable and is truly an art form. Thank you for your excellence.
Mine is closer to the version of Old English found in the book published by Speedball. New editions have come out since then but my letter M has my own personal touch. Speedball has the best books ever published on calligraphy fonts.
Hi Mark, I've recently been inspired to take up calligraphy thanks to you and other enthusiasts (mainly in the reddit calligraphy community, which you should check out, they'd love you there!). I've been looking for a full alphabet of the M you wrote in 'old English' and can't find anything near the intricately detailed example you wrote in this vid. Did you write standard old english with some extra personal touches? Do you have any references to a similar alphabet that I can use? Thanks :)
wow nice! I was wondering if you could do some tutorials on the capital letters of gothic old english? Specifically E, T and C which I have enormous problems with. Drawing the half moon is so difficult for me.
You can try to become ambidextrous. Besides, left is just as good as right....just lift your hand off the paper when you write. Other than that you could write it backwards but idk how hard that might be for you lol.
Jordan Mulhall I think it would be healthy to treat calligraphy as an entirely different thing than your typical handwriting. And using your non-dominant hand might help you focus more on what you _should_ be doing and less on what you are used to doing. Also, because writing with your right hand has more advantages for English writing.
What a great vid! I'm what you called one of the 'taggers' and what your referring to is called 'HandStyles' and it's usually done with chisel tip markers, Fat Cap spray cans or Mops = (refillable markers that are Super wide, resembling a calligraphy type of letters) trying to learn the basics to better my HandStyles.. I was wondering if there are any books you would recommend for someone who just wants to know the basics ??? Any help will be greatly appreciated and again what a great vid I can't wait to see the next!
Self taught in 10th grade and started making spare cash at it...then I got a degree in Commercial Art and did continue my education in college taking a calligraphy course.
what are all of the books you have looked at? i am very interested in learning calligraphy but i am having trouble finding a source to learn from. how long have you been practicing calligraphy and how did you start? many thanks in advance
hi im a tagger i started caligraphy recently its quite easy their all the same family i bet u could tag if u want to see a tagger do calligraphy type in sure hand selecta
hello, about taggers, theres a style of graffiti/tag that's CALLIGRAFFITI. I think it was created by "Niels Shoe Meulman", and you have also "theosone " and many others. Search for them in the web and you'll see the "tagging" pushed a little further, in a Calligraphic approach. Thanks
I am good at drawing and painting, now i wanna get into calligraphy esp the old english, which i so much love but the problem is knowing which pen and how to use it..
i am using a traditional pen and ink set and one of the main problems i have is that the ink doesn't last long. when i dip the ink and make the first stroke it runs out in the middle of the stroke. someone told me a good way to help with that is to dilute the ink a bit but i guess i diluted it too much because when i use the slightly diluted ink it just makes a big spot as soon as i press the pen to the paper. is there a trick or general rule to help with getting the mix right?
Hey there, being a lefty my handwriting has always been a bit shakey, so this kind of thing does not come very easily to me at all. How much do you charge for say a half A4 parchment sheet of simple gothic writing, signed with an elaborate gothic name in larger print?
Great calligraphy, though from a photographer's point of view you should pay attention on your how you focus on your videos, the focusing is terrible and we miss important details of your calligraphy, like the thiner lines, the edge of the letters and texture of the text. Thank you very much for the video, though. Great designs inspirational.
I like graffiti, I think if they got ahold of the marker themselves so people can hang it on a wall, things like that have been done, but more of it would be rockin. Thanks for your input, thanks for watching, means a lot.
awesome video, couldn't make it all the way through though because of the annoying popups that tell me stupid things like "WATCH THIS NOW". Great skill and technique, just tired of clicking close on unnecessary windows
I'm have you write anything I need professionally done should it ever arise my handwriting is embarrassing however I studied calligraphy in 10th grade art there were lots of styles and techniques.
I haven't forgotten about left handed vid, I am getting there. I have a new page called "World Calligraphy Guild and Typography" on Facebook now. Please feel free to join it and invite anyone else you think would enjoy it as well. Feel free to post your own calligraphy work on that page too, looking forward!
hi im a tagger ive recently started calligraphy i can do copperplate kind of styles i have tried this and im doing ok at it ive learnt quite quick . its all the same family accept we lieve a mark peaple think its odd for a tagger to do this . if u want to see a tagger do calligraphy i will send u a vid.
"Don't feel stuck 'cause you don't have all the stuff." that's a great philosophy. its really encouraging. Thank you

Straightforward sensible way to show how to do this beautiful writing. Thank you so much. Lovely.

so beautiful! I've only ever studied japanese and chinese calligraphy styles you've really inspired me into the english style now! you've given me a good starting point!
This is some majestic stuff, could watch it all day.

I have been interested in caligraphy for awhile. Your video has gallvanized me to try it out. Thank you so much.
Hi There

Don't give up!!! keep having fun with it. It's only hard at first but you do get use to it.
I'm glad to see someone else who appreciates the typography used in graffiti, though it is all not so artistic as this many of them learn calligraphy before they do graffiti
love your style very beautiful. I just started doing calligraphy and I love the old English style and chancery, great tutorial!!!
Nice lesson! Good description of the thick 'n thin principle. Nice work too, bro! Anxious to see more.
I'm amazed at the fact that he can do this AND speak at the same time. I can't multi-task and wright at the same time.
Hi Mark, unfortunately all your Lesson videos are blocked by TH-cam in germany :-(((
I love your art!!!! Simply fantastic!
Very cool, check out video three in the description as well and thanks so much for your input!

This was a great demonstration, now I'm fascinated with old English, I can use this in school.
@Artic3buster That's awesome! Get in there and show your stuff!
That is really beautiful writing, I am going to give it a go! I'll let you know how I get on!
Absolutely *love* your style. I learned the traditional Olde English Scroll, but it lacks the elegance of what you did in this video. beautiful lesson - i am getting back into calligraphy again. thanks so much for this
I love this style. Can you tell me how to find examples of the whole alphabet of this particular style??
look up free calligraphy fonts online and search for gothic/chancery
Thanks Kelly
Can you do a tutorial for all the letters? :)
Mine is closer to the version of Old English found in the book published by Speedball. New editions have come out since then but my letter M has my own personal touch. Speedball has the best books ever published on calligraphy fonts.
I just started learning Gothic, or Blackletter. I want to learn the style Seagram's uses in their name . I also want to learn Copperplate style.
I'm a writer and I'm trying to learn calligraphy to apply to my graff. Maybe one day you'll see my stuff.
The dip pens are fun!!! keep at it!
Its so beautiful!!! I love it!!
Looks really fun, I'm the kind of guy who could sit there for hours writing epic stories in this style of writing.
@yasmin silva yeah we do
I saw you on the freeway and by the way your content is awesome, please keep it up God Bless you
Jeeez...I bought the same set of pens and I'm nowhere near to write as cool as you, specially italic style...good work, man

hi mark what is the official meme for the old English font you use --I've looked and can find many similar but not the same as yours
I like your tutorial very much because it's "lite" if I may say so, so relaxed. Thank you very much.
But I'm left-handed. How will I pass art?
You can try to become ambidextrous. Besides, left is just as good as right....just lift your hand off the paper when you write. Other than that you could write it backwards but idk how hard that might be for you lol.

Matt McConaha You may want to tell that bologna to the best calligraphers in the world. Most of which are left handed.
MrTerminalX Hello...I'm a lefty too...just put a piece of paper under your hand and you can write trouble free! ;)
+Evon Robinson Well done.
Thanks so much, I worked really hard to give it that look. means a lot that you mentioned that. Thanks over and over
Awesome video man, can't wait to get started ....

I actually prefer writing with a traditional pen, nib, and ink :) If you haven't already, you should try some day!
If can't get a calligraphy pen what would be next best thing? I really enjoyed your video btw.
Self taught in 10th grade and started making spare cash at it...then I got a degree in Commercial Art and did continue my education in college taking a calligraphy course.

do you need to turn the pen when writing
Maybe just have fun with it at first...my very first calligraphy came out pretty sloppy but it was a blast.
Where did you get your marker?
Is it possible to do calligraphy if your left handed?
I like graffiti, I think if they got ahold of the marker themselves so people can hang it on a wall, things like that have been done, but more of it would be rockin. Thanks for your input, thanks for watching, means a lot.
