Hey look everyone, we got an honest mechanic! Most mechanics where I live won't even bother checking an actuator they just pull everything(turbo included) and replace! Love the videos!
So great for the environment that we get to mine all that extra material and burn energy to make it into metal and process it down to a shitty part that needs to be replaced when a regular old turbo woulda ran for 25 years on an old tractor. Politicians are brainless
Warren ..I had 2 tractors in the last year that were the same deal .. let's just say I now have a spare actuator as well . . Almost need an actuator for diagnostics because it's hard to positively diagnose the turbo vs acuator and of course the new turbos come with an actuator. Thanks for the video
In Europe that issue was traced to the manifold. It was allowing the turbo to move and vibrate too much and destroying the actuator and ring gear JD did a recall or PIP on them and replaced all the manifolds and turbos on 170 190 and 210 with beefed up parts
I’m a field tech for Fresno equipment in five points ca. And that a is a common failure down here. The turbo is moving to far, it shouldn’t move more the 90 degrees from its resting position. I replace a turbo about once a week. I carry a actuator with me. And when I see that code I try the actuator and if it doesn’t calibrate I just replace the turbo. There is a new payload for those engines but it wouldn’t fix that problem. I enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work.
Warren greetings from Eastern Ohio. I love watching your videos. I have worked on Deere tractors for over 25 years. i have had a few VGT turbos that travel too far instead of freezing up. Something that also might help you is Deere releases updated software bundles almost yearly. i dont know how many times that the problem with all the code popping and issue with the R and M series are software related. Keep up the great work you are an amazing mechanic that Valley is lucky to have you.
I had a similar problem on my buddies ISX he had taken it to Cummins several times they put on 2 turbos charged him up the ass still had issues so he brought it me all shit shook I hooked up to cummins insite went through calibration testing etc couldn’t find anything! I checked wires from Ecuador to control, bingo ! I had 12 volts on my meter but when I loaded that circuit with a light bulb voltage dropped down to like 2 volts ! I did an overlay for that wire problem solved! Didn’t make any $$ on it but I got a thankyou! Lol! Great video bud thanks for sharing yeah sometimes we get ass kickers that just don’t make sense! Have a good Sunday take care 👍
Black Smoke I have had trouble with wiring around turbos since Ford turboed the 2.3ltr in the mustang.Good job on load testing the wires , that is a necessity when working with DC voltage over any distance, like in a tour bus .
That turbo looked pretty black, like it might be leaking oil. It's difficult to get operators to let things idle to cool down the turbo before shutting the engine off.
Great video Warren, I know you don’t have a lot of time but maybe you can get one of those large magnets like they use on droplights and hook it up to that tripod your using. That way you could just stick it on your truck bed. Thanks for sharing.
Nice job warren those VGT’s can be a pain . I have found that some times the travel is too great on the actuator it should move 90 degrees. You can reduce the travel by welding a stop to the clamping band and get the lower end of the linkage rod to stop on it and then run the VGT Calibration all should be good 🙂
We had the 6125R on our farm do the same error code and it was the VGT ring in the turbo. John Deere here in Australia recommend to change the turbo to the new updated version.
Hey Warren, thank you very much for your videos and work. You're the best out there. I've had VGT's (of different makes as well) fail the calibration due to OVER travel. The cumulative wear in the linkage to the unison ring causes the actuator to travel beyond its normal range. I can rarely see or feel the wear, but its there. Turbo replacement it is!
Great video young man and with modern stuff going wrong it makes you wonder if all these modern very expensive tractors are actually worth it their cost value in the long run? Because you could buy a properly restored old tech (80's tractor for example) tractor for maybe 1/3 the price of a new one and it would outlast the new one. Many old pre 2000's tractors are still going strong in their original markets or sold into export markets as sued machines. I cannot see modern (The last decade or so) tractors lasting 20,30 or 40+yrs and then going to Africa or Asia for a second life. And on that basis you have to question the economics and "Eco/green" value of remaking new stuff. Still, if they didn't go wrong Warren would loose work and we would loose the videos!
Just realised why I like your videos . No heirs or graces . It is what it is warts and all. The truth videos of a hard working self employed man taking the world along on his daily jobs .
This was a very interesting one to watch . I had problems with the actuator in my BMW, apperantly the turbo carbened up and and the electromotor of the actuator failed eventually.
Software on these type vehicles is so tight now you have enter in calibration numbers just to get the ECU to recognize the part. A Mack MP7 I installed injectors in has to have each injector number entered in to the tool and reflashed just to get the engine to run.
Great videos Warren...I do maintenance also, I wish I had your patience and diagnostic skills...I just want to hit sh*t with a hammer after awhile...lol
ECU will also set codes if there's to much travel. Sometimes heat can change the length of linkages and go outside the ECU's set value. Sometimes wear can do it.
There's a lot more going on via the can bus, feedback travel and load current, maybe the travel is ok but the effort to move may exceed the tolerances thus causing your error. This is a problem with error codes they are very generic and criptic. Swapology is the only cure here. Great video, agree with other commentator a magnetic stand for your camera or even a head cam😉

Hello Warren. What were the symptoms (besides codes) that prompted this work. I'm asking because I have an International 4300 with the DT466 that has a very similar VGT. It runs fine when cold but gets less responsive as it heats up. After a hot restart all hell breaks loose. Sometimes zero throttle response until I feather the throttle, then it kicks in but blows soot. Then it runs only OK and then sputters again. This condition persists the rest of the day. Your videos are AMAZING. Thank you!!!

It seems like the manufacturers nowadays are engineering their products to fail and cause customers to pay more for parts and labor at regular intervals
Another great video Warren. Just thinking about it, when it is giving that error code, instead of a travel issue could it be a resistance issue. As in it is not moving as freely as it should be?. Moving yes but not freely. I know some things that can be an issue am wondering if could be for this as well. How the system determine's that is unknown maybe it is related to draw current or even time to go from full up to full down. I am sure there is someone here who is much more knowledgeable than myself who would know if that is possible.
Guessing: there may be dirty contacts inside the turbo actuator. I'm not sure what kind of signal or feedback is sent to the computer. That turbo looked fine and the actuator travel seemed ok.
Ok so here in the UK we have had some trouble VAG group diesel cars throwing over boost codes down to a bit of wear in the turbo veins or mechanical part of the turbo, we even had it on a factory reconditioned turbo so we only fit new ones now

It'd still be nice to know what causes the computer to throw a code. I'm guessing it'd have something to do with either the travel distance out of range or time to travel stop to stop with a given voltage, too fast too slow. I'll bet you could tell if they'd give you a look at that data in the diagnostic program. It must be really sensitive since you pulled a working one, reinstalled it and then a no go.
