This has to be one of the most straightforward explanations of a VVT on the internet. Really good description of how it works. DIY mechanics shouldn't be fearful of tackiing this job. Thanks for sharing
This has nothing to do with variable valve timing though...

Can't thank you enough. I hv been suffering with frequent CEL n limp mode for the last 3 months. No service centre nor "expert" mechanics could diagnose the cause (even with official scanning). Their conclusion was the ECU is kaput n i ought to buy a new one.
After sumbling on to ur video today i opened and cleaned the turbo myself and the issue is fixed.
THANK YOU.
Important to keep in mind: the turbo spins at over 120 thousand rpm, which is 2000 revs per second. A tiniest scratch, nick or bend on the turbine or compressor wheel will throw it out of balance, meaning reduced rpm of the turbo, and damaged turbo bearing.
Best turbo cleaning description so far thanks.
By far, the best video explanation I've seen of how these turbos work and why they have issues. I was hoping the notchiness I felt in the actuator moving was from the actuator rod, unfortunately it's coming from the actuator lever on the turbo/vanes. After watching this, I'm way more confident cleaning the turbo. Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to post this, very informative.
Extremely nice seeing this live with no animation. Even if you already know how VNT / VTG turbos / VGT work, it's great to really see this once. Thank you!
makes me want to go outside and take my turbo apart!! Nice video, well explained!
Navas Huskies that's what ill do this weekend thanks to this.
That’s exactly how I felt when I watched this. Ripped my turbo off yesterday going to take it apart today lol
A very good overview of VNT type turbo and potential fault points. Although Ive worked on a lot of cars over the last few decades this video was a good refresher on the VNT operation.
A clear and practical video. Thanks for the efforts!!
The best video on explaining and cleaning your VNT Turbo
am very happy for this video....
Great camera work, clear explanation, excellent job.
"LIMP MODE" I subscribed instantly after you explained that, I've been having the issue you describe on my Open/Vauxhall Signum 3.0 V6 CDTI 03, I'm a newbie to turbos and all the mechanics around here say don't touch it and buy a new one but I want to learn more about the unit and how to fix it myself, brilliant video, thank you
Personally, I would find a replacement out of a salvage yard. Then take that one apart and study it. Clean it and buy a rebuild kit. Then when you take your old one off you already know what you need to do. Good luck on that beauty!
Thankyou, ive been suffering major overboost/limp mode issues, im not getting full travel on the vnt lever but i didn't understand whether up was open or closed, after watching this video i fully understand whats causing my problems.
Excellent stuff...! VNT Turbo has no mystery left for me now... ! ;) - thanks for your clear nd well illustrated info
Perfect explanation and has given me the total insight as to why mine overboosts as with vacuum connected the turbo arm moves less than if I move it manually, and I can feel it dragging inside...now I understand why....brilliant explanation thanks!
A good video with clear explanations, it all makes sense. Getting at it is not so easy
Must appreciate the effort and the detail with which you've made this video.
Very good work mate
Superb explanation ... I'm a reasonably good home mechanic.. owning a mitsubishi L200...and didn't know exactly how these vanes work .... probably never take a turbo apart ...but it's nice to know how they operate... thanks
Best video seen so far on this. Well explained and good lighten could see clearly. Play in control ring 👍
Watched the theory at 'Engineering explained' and came here to watch the practical. Bravo to both you guys! Excellent work...
Same thing !!! EE overhyped the explanation and i tough the vanes were in the compressor side .. this videos clearly explains and shows how it works !
perfectly explained! Very usefull to limit my charging problems and check the functionality of my vacuum cell
Awesome video man! Really detailed breakdown of the Turbo. Thanks 👍
Very clear and articulate explanation. Thanks for a very useful video.
Just recently found your videos whrn searchinh ingo about limp mode. Best detailed car videos :)
I just did this on my Saab 9-5 2007 and it works now. Thanks
great job. now i have understood what is\how it works a VNT turbo.
Absolutely excellent video ................... very good usable information !! Now i know what is wrong with my 1.7 cdti Honda when it goes to the limp mode
Brilliant video. Answered my question where all other forums failed, and that is "there is no wastegate in these type of turbos". I have been searching for info on the Vito 111 cdi wastegate all week after reading on the Mercedes forum that this is the the reason my Vito keeps going into limp mode. The sticky actuator is for the variable vanes not the waste gate. I wish ill informed people would keep their mouths firmly shut !!
I used Winns turbo cleaner spray. Sprayed a whole can in the turbo while the engine was on idling. Gave it 10 min took it for a spin and i can't believe it did the job. Easy cheap fix. And no service gave me this cheap option it was a last resort thing to see if it worked. They wanted me to recondition the turbo...car works fine now.
On which side of the turbo have you sprayed? Intake or exhaust? Did you leave it for 10 minutes at idle with the spray in? Thanks.
Abia acum am observat ca esti tot roman. Mersi Gabi.
Great video thanks. Just replaced my turbo and now I know why.
Hi, you r good, probably the best teacher. Fantastic information & clear video. Now i can put parts to words. Will also do some cleaning on mine. Greetings from the United Kingdom!!
Great vid thanks......gonna start pulling mine apart then clean with mr. muscle and finish with carb cleaner, hope it works.
God of turbos! Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Needed this video!! Perfect video!! Just what I needed and helped me figure out that my vanes were stuck.
Wow this is the real video which i was searching for... 👍🏼
A very clear explenation. Well done
Very informative and beautifully presented.
Super told.
For the first time i had understand how it's work.
Thank you.
I have a issue with a overboost.
I had mounted a gauge vacuum on the line to vaccum acuator.
When i press the clutch i have a little to 90% vacuum and after small pitch the vacuum drop to 20 or 10.
After 100km/h, i had limp mode with error overboost.
It's seems that the vane are not clossing.
The actuator moves ok, but as i understand from you, i can have that gap, that keeps the vanes open a little...
Hmmm, i have to dismantle...
In the summer i think...
Thanks again...
Excellent tutorial, Thanks!!
Thanks bro love from Kenya 🇰🇪👍
really excellent explanation, many thanks for helping me understand
FN amazing! I have a twin-turbo Mercedes and I will try to dial in both sides by using the adjustment nuts--if I can see them.
Great video. Really glad I found this. Saved my ass and turbo.
Very informative video. Thanks a lot for your effort.
Excellent and very informative!
Your video was very helpful. Thank you
yes brilliant explanation of how a turbo works
Excellent video. My Insignia has intermittent power loss and a P003A fault code. Basically, the car doesn't know where the vane position is and goes into fault, dumping the boost. Going to use Revive Turbo cleaner and see if it works out.
Thanks for all this informations . Keep the good work
Amazing video man.. you solved all my doubts about VNT turbos... And btw please make the video on how tthe solenoid works in This VNT mechanisms
Thanks a lot really helpful and straightforward.
If you are doing this yourself at home mark the oil inlet position on both housings before you take it apart, saves problems on reassembly.
The Transit is the first Turbo I've owned with a VNT. I bought a new one and had it replaced, never knowing really what it did. The magic words here were 'a VNT system doesn't have a BOV" or something to that effect.
excellent video...
Brilliant video, very helpful, thankyou.
thanks i been clean a few turbo all is done well
Must admit that I have removed the exhaust flange and filled the housing with "Mr Muscle" oven cleaning foam. Left it for a couple of hours then cleaned out with brake cleaner and an air line. Next day, refitted flange and road test. Loads of black from exhaust but it does clear.
Hi there ,great informative video, thanks for posting it ,I have a honda crv deisel that go's into limp mode on hard acceleration, also there is a whistle coming from the turbo,
I have been looking for a video that explains the workings of the turbo and now I will attempt to clean the veins. Many thanks Frank
Perfect explanation!!

Briliant ! THANKS A MILLION
Great video!
You are the boss. Thanks so much.
Great info man
awesome vid. thank you
Well explained👍
great video! you have another subscriber ;)
great info , thanks
Thank you! How much play is too much play on the actuator arm lever in that ring?
At 13:09 the "control ring " is in upside down. The notch that the control lever sits in on the control ring sits between two holes. One is a "slot" and the other is a "round hole". The round hole should be on the left. I'm certain this will not allow correct amount of travel.
Good video. Mine is very hard to move. Need to take it out again strip and clean it.
Brill video already been informed by main dealer I have a bad bog turbo among other things . This indicates the likely issue . One being likely lots of carbon build up .......I get noises only while driving its like a vibration (sound of ) buzzing hard to explain that happens more often snd less often at diff times ....maybe the vanes I'm not sure ..Great video indeed mazda mention they'd put a new turbo kit in and clean what they can . Iys removing ut that I'd not want to do as it's at the rear tucked away . A nightmare inc the oil feed
more than helpfull!! thanks
