      Not Hui, Uighur, however it was most likely created by a cook from sichuan or Hunan living in Xinjiang.

    Although we did not have this dish, the combination of veggies and chicken in a tasty sauce brings back fond memories of our time in Karamay. There was one dish (whose name escapes me) with potatoes, onion, carrots, peppers, garlic served in bowl of hot oil with a lump of waxy fuel underneath. It was brought to the table, the wax was lit, and the dish got hotter as you ate it. Mmmm...beautiful! Thanks again, Josh. Yeah-no chicken feet for me!

      @FarWestChina  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! So glad it brings back good memories for you, Bob. I'm not sure what dish you're referring to in Karamay but it does sound delicious :)

    Chicken feet is good. One of my favorite Cantonese Dim Sum is chicken feet, commonly referred to as phoenix claw.

    • @FarWestChina
      @FarWestChina  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! I just don't get the whole chicken foot thing. It seems like there's NO POINT! :-)

    • @PomegranateChocolate
      @PomegranateChocolate 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The point is to eat the texture, just like pig's ear, the crunchy cartilage. Dim Sum phoenix claws are also marinated with a special sauce, so you also eat the taste. You should try it ;)

    • @lemonarry
      @lemonarry 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The POINT of eating chicken foot is sucking the juice and flavor out of the soft skin, which is "supposedly good" for your own skin. It's NOT about eating meat because there isn't any.

    Probably my favorite dish in China, but I never been out west and here in Guangzhou, they always make it with star anise. Nice video. I noticed a metal detector on your way out of the restaurant.

    • @FarWestChina
      @FarWestChina  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, we have metal detectors in every restaurant, grocery store and small hole-in-the-wall nowadays. It's annoying but just part of life now.

    Hello Josh,
    Great video!
    I had this dish in China but not in Xinjiang, good dish but I did not like the foot and the head.
    Loved the Beef noodles in China, it is a wholesome dish, is it available in Xinjiang?

    • @FarWestChina
      @FarWestChina  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Antony! I agree - the head and feet aren't my favorite, but everything else is awesome :)
      Yes, you can find LOTS of beef noodles out here!

      Ha! I wouldn't go that far, but I feel blessed having lived here so long. The 第一盘 that I visited in this video is on 南湖北路70号 (70 Nanhu Beilu).

    Hi Josh.
    Is the dish Muslim-friendly?
    I have small stomach; do restaurants there allow a few people, say 4, to share one plate? One-to-one, there would be leftovers and wastage.

    • @FarWestChina
      @FarWestChina  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is halal! The dish is a Muslim dish so most any restaurant where you eat it is halal.
      Also, as far as sharing goes, it's perfectly normal to share a dish between many people. In fact, it was a bit weird for me to eat a plate by myself ;)

      Agreed! I've eaten DaPanJi elsewhere in China and it's just not the same. Also, I believe you are right - the birthplace of DaPanJi (at least what I've been told) is here in Xinjiang. Thanks for the comment!

    Hui people called in Russia and Central Asia DUNGANS, 'cause the word Hui on Russian mean a very bad word

      Yes, they used to be called Dungans in China as well, but they've switched over to calling them Hui for some reason.

    • @gearsau
      @gearsau 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because, I'm fussy what I put in my stomach. I have experienced food poisoning too many times in my Asian travels. Korea, China, Japan. Even got food poisoning from my cooking when I lived in Tokyo. I'm careful about keeping all the cooking utensils clean etc., but something slipped through. So, nowadays, I stick with what I know. I never eat KFC, except in Thailand. Its fantastic there . In Bangkok, at the Seacon Square shopping centre.. Amazing . No chicken feet though :-)

      Chicken feet ......Not on my bucket list, I'm afraid ...
