- In this league you start with a 1-1 count and it was a 3-1 count when the umpire calls an iffy strike. The umpire was upset that the batter argued the call and then strikes him out on a pitch that hits before the plate. In our league, if the pitch hits the plate at all, it is a dead ball, so this definitely should have been ball four and not strike three. The umpire apparently told the scorer that he did it for a reason and he would tell us after the game. When confronted about the call later, he came up with the response "I was trying to make him swing because there have been too many walks"
For people who say you don’t take pitches in slow pitch, go watch the Mens Major World Series and tell them to not take pitches

It's Beer league hit the F'n Ball. The worst thing in the world is slow pitch is looking for walks with hit-able pitches.
Go get training as an UMP ANYWHERE and they'll tell you to call that a strike in the Men's Beer League.
It might have even hit the plate it was that close.

I ref men’s league hockey and I’ve done it for years and it doesn’t matter what skill level it is, I’ll call the game the same because that’s what we are supposed to do. Be consistent with our calls
I work 4 sports at HS Varsity level and beyond and worked my way up from PeeWee and MightyMite to get there.
The league and the level changes the interpretation of the rule, the points of emphasis and the Tower Principle stands regardless.
Not knowing that makes the game about the Ref or Ump not the players.
Your league would be twice as fun for you guys if you used a "swing the damn bat" interpretation (and quit bitching).
If it is hit-able pitch and not dropping straight down like a meteor. Hit it. Who in their right mind wants to see multiple pitches for every batter?

I umpired baseball and softball for 30 years. If I had ever made a call like that, I'd have retired in shame.
I thought the ball has to pass over the plate in order to be a strike. We have been using mats in the league i play in and nothing frustrates me more than a ball that falls before the mat and is called a strike.
And this was the at bat that ruined his path to the majors...
The only reason he called strike 3, is the batter pointed his bat at where strike 2 landed. That's called showing up the ump. Just don't do it and it won't happen. Easy as that.

I’m sure someone else mentioned: On the called strike 2, the batter “drew a line” with his bat while arguing. A big no-no in eyes of umps. Unwritten rule. This will often get you ejected. The bogus strike 3 call is punishment for the line drawing.

Because that's exactly what this man did..."I'm in a position of power so I'm going to punish this person because my little feelings are hurt".

Even if he was equally bad for both teams, it takes the enjoyment out of the game and an ump that unprofessional deserves what he gets.

As a lefty who played a ton of Baseball and Softball you learn quickly that u r played to pull and pitched away. I loved it because now you screwed yourself as a pitcher, and and alot of true hitters thrive on that. I'm stroking it down the LF line for XBH. Just watching your boy up there with no clue as to what to do at the plate makes sense why he got called out. Watching the next batter coming up, u can tell he's a ballplayer and had better results than the scrub that got caught looking in slo pitch SB.

I played in a coed league like 10 years ago and there was one guy we played against that wouldn't swing unless there were 2 strikes on him. Drove me nuts. I batted .850 in that league for God's sake. Swing the fricking bat. He'd get hits a lot of the time when he had 2 strikes too. I stopped playing after we kept getting 8am games. It's not possible to have fun before noon on the weekend.

That’s actually not a rule, unwritten or otherwise. That’s just a person being a prick. The thing I love about baseball is that the rules are very precise and not open for interpretation. Unlike basketball where it’s up to the refs discretion whether a bump is a foul or just a bump. Any ref or ump can miss a call but at least in baseball the rules are clear.

If it’s a rule, even an unwritten rule, then it would be observed every time but it’s not. It only happens when you are dealing with a bad umpire.
No one ever believes me when I say this but in little league I hit 2 grand slams in the same inning. We cycled the entire lineup and that was with me batting 4th. Both teams came to an agreement and decided to call it quits after that. I felt really bad for the pitcher. This is the same year I broke the fields record for most homeruns in a season at 16 homers. I believe I was 13 at the time, "30 now". 3 years ago my hometown record was finally broken and the kid absolutely destroyed my record and set his own at 23 homers.

That happened to me before. It didn't ever hit the plate. It was 3 or 4 inches in front of the plate. The ump cared more about his ego, than getting the call correct. That guy should not be an umpire.

My biggest fluke was in little league, 15 and 16 years of age mostly on these two teams. You know the ole ball/strike clicker. I failed to reset after last batter. Next batter comes up and on his third pitch, 1st being a strike and second being a ball, the third pitch came in as a beautiful strike. Batter took it, I did a quick check and yelled STRIKE THREE! Batter looked back at me as if I was insane, the coach was running out and my 1st base ump yelled, "David - Strike 2!" He got to me before the coach did. After a five second chat with my ump, I had to gracefully yell out, "Ump went to sleep. Count is 1&2. Play Ball!" That was the last time I failed to reset my clicker. Probably shouldn't have relied on it but it did save me a few times as well.

I would say that he clearly made this call because the batter showed him up on the previous pitch by trying to point to where the ball landed, saying the 3-1 pitch should have been ball 4. As someone else stated, this is a big no-no, and it really is no surprise that he was called out on the next pitch to make a point. I have seen this several times before.
This is a great strategy, you gotta wear out the pitchers arm in slow pitch. It's like body shots in boxing.

You can easily see the umpire made up his mind about the 3rd strike while the pitch was in the air. The umpire never did see the ball hit the ground. The ump had no idea where the ball went, he just knew it was going to be a 3rd strike. When umpires make these obvious mistakes, they should expect to be verbally abused by the players.

I mean I agree I'm all for aggressive swinging in slow pitch, step into it and direct it where you want it to go for sure, but that pitch was almost not hittable...he did seem to be taking pitches though, the two pitches before that I have no idea what he was doing, people like that are annoying don't get me wrong. I agree also that it's fairly easy to place a pitch like that, and I was exaggerating a bit when I said it was close to unhittable...I guess I should rephrase that to some hitters would view that as unhittable, as a suprising amount of softball players don't know how to be proactive, step into the pitch, or place the ball as you described. Bottom line this hitter was an ass, and probably a bad hitter too.

Mr. Jay Tv we don’t really take it that seriously. The only reason I posted this was so my manager had the video evidence of one of the many things the umpire did that game. My team just goes out and has fun because it’s something to do. It just sucks when you’re trying to have a fun game but the umpire decides that he’s gonna choose how the game is gonna go

I was the umpire. I literally just worked the men's fastpitch state championship on the plate earlier that day. I got called in to do a favor. It was basement league. No athleticism anywhere to be seen. This kid had been running his mouth all game as a pitcher. Then he drew a line in my box, which is grounds for immediate ejection. But that skinny douche bag isn't worth writing a report on. So I said a prayer to baby Jesus and asked that he drop the next pitch before the plate... Oh my, did he ever answer!!!!! We're not talking balls and strikes on a 13mph fastball. Sit your ass down...
In my game earlier that day, men were throwing 80mph fastballs (fastpitch) and didn't hear boo once... then go to this shit show and all of a sudden I'm the worst umpire ever... GTFO.... I am going to umpire college softball tomorrow lol...

As an umpire, I think he was to proud to reverse a wrong call. He realized it, yet failed to do the right thing... Thats why in 15 yrs as an ump,I had only 1 time a major dispute..If I was wrong, I corrected it and every team knew it. I discussed any dispute with the manager and I was not hesitant to calmly pull out rule book and point out rules and probably reversed my own call if it went against the rules...different leagues will have different rules, so its not uncommon to have to quickly look thru rules when switching leagues of different ages and even local rules...Can't be too full of pride !
Balls and strikes are much different than most other plays. You really can’t change your ruling on balls and strikes once you rule them, that’s not really how it works. As far as most other calls, they can be reversed with a quick little conversation with the other ump. And even with balls and strikes, you can always say to that coach like “yeah I missed that one my bad.” I try to save that one for after the game though.

Usually bcause a pitcher had a carzy curve that I called to early because I thought it would be impossible for a ball to move so much... I remember one I called a ball to quick and it became a strike... I actually starting laughing out loud, called a time out and called both managers over and apologized for the quick call because I had never seen a ball move that far in my life . I also walked to the mound and told the pitcher, who was in Highschool that was the best curve Ive ever seen and I was actually a college ump just filling in. I think if the batter didnt jump out of the way it might have hit him... I also let the batter know that the pitch really moved that far and was a strike.
I had a very good relationship with all teams in that H.S. division as I was never afraid to correct a mistake and was willing to talk about any call with a manager..
I did call a strike on a player that was nowhere clos on a 3-0 count... The next pitch was a ball and he walked anyway.. I knew his Dad and let him know that the call was the worst call I ever made and no matter where the next pitch landed was going to be a ball.... I think I was so shocked at my brainfart of that ball, I did not have time to process it and change it...
I never had a single arguement with any player or coach my entire career in the High School League..
I was request a lot when I was not doing college games... I made sure that if a pitcher was unhappy about a call, I would talk between innings and let him know what I was seeing,,, I mean.. These were Highschool kids and as a 1 time coach of 5 teams I also thought players should be informed what I was seeing as it would only help them... Its just a game.
My brother lived for softball for 20 years & argued many a bad call, this one would've gotten the umpires a$$ kicked in front of everyone.

Slow pitch softball (in rec leagues) is about if the ball is "hittable" or not... If the ball is hittable whatsoever, it's a strike. If the ball isnt hittable it's a ball. Albeit in a normal game of fastpitch softball or baseball, that'd be laughablly a ball. But, in this slowpitch stuff, if it's hittable it's a strike. Regardless if it crosses the plate or not is irrelevant in most of these. If the ball crosses the 6' high threshold but isn't higher than the 8' threshold (to qualify as a toss) and it's reasonably in line with the plate, and lands within 2-inches of home plate and up to 2.5' behind home plate, then it's a strike. Most all rec-leagues, this is their standard. Some are different than others based on how serious the guys take it, but all in all that's a good rule of thumb to go by, just to play it safe against looser umps.
In this instance, it was definitely hittable, he just wanted to be a little girl and not reach it to poke the ball info play. There's no fun in the game whatsoever when guys wanna stand around taking walks all day. After all, it's a rec game to have some fun and be active.

As a left hander, that was easily hittable had he stepped into it. He has 2' of box in front of him to step into and dig the hit out of if need be.
In ANY hitting sport (softball, baseball, slow pitch, etc) you cannot rely on an umpire whatsoever (this is a prefect example of why). You're always told that "when your count is tight, swing at literally anything even remotely coming in straight, unless its gonna hit you or its over top of the opposing batters box", and this is a beautiful example of why we're told that from AAU all the way up to triple A/minors.
In ANY serious travel leagues (baseball, not slowpitch) that's what we're instructed to do. Given that our umpires were very serious and actually paid well, I can only imagine how loose and careless these rec umps would be, hehe.

When I started playing it was single wall one piece only and no end cap. Had fun in the '90s. I stopped playing because it wasn't fun anymore. This actually happened to me, ump called a ball ROLLING ON HOME PLATE a strike
We had a tied game, bases load, a power hitter up to bat. He jumps out to an 0-2 count and works his way back to 3-2 the ball hits the plate, bounced up and the catcher dropped the ball. He calls it a strike but since the catcher dropped it everyone starts running. The ump the proceeds to say the catcher caught the ball and sent everyone back to their original base. That was our number three and the other team scored a run off of an error and won the game. Umps are bullshit sometimes.

As a beer league player since you start the count at 1-1 if I already have a strike on me as long as that ball is even close you gotta swing at it. Everybody is out there for fun so why try to walk? The third pitch maybe you swing at, but if you’re not good at driving outside balls, maybe let it slide. That last pitch though a guy could definitely drive it. I know it’s short of the plate, but with two strikes gotta do something. He could’ve stepped in the box during the pitch to hit it. It’s pretty common to see people to that.
