    A few things to remember. The DE is a gas operated, rotating bolt action much like an AR. Underpowered ammo, especially .357 range ammo will not cycle the action correctly and .357 bullets were never designed to encounter a feed ramp.

      This. If you gonna buy a Deagle, buy a .44 Mag at least. It’s STILL pleasant enough to shoot, not nearly kick you to the curb like the .50 AE and as long as you hold it correctly and use the Weaver stance, reliable enough and isn’t nearly as sensitive to ammo as .357 Mag. So yeah, go for the .44 Mag instead.

    • @Resident-cb3yz
      @Resident-cb3yz 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@StryderK does it work flawless? I would really like .44 Remington magnum version if it worked. It is a pity that nobody manufactures a working .357 magnum semiauto pistol. Metal alloys are not that expensive. You could literally make a whole pistol from some titanium alloy because it is cheap. No idea how hard it is to modern lathes on that small size. I work in factory that makes 155 mm ammos and lathes eat them few hundreds a day. You can even cut most titanium alloys with small goldsmith hand saw and file it with normal file before tempering.

    One of the first handguns I ever fired was a .357 Desert Eagle back in 1989 I think. I was 14 or 15; the friend who had it reloaded but all he ever used was the 158 grain semi-jacketed hollow points. It was a fun gun to shoot but since he used Winchester 296 powder wow did it throw a big fireball! I don’t think I ever hit much with it as a kid, probably flinched every time!😂. I also remember him showing me that he’d run it a little too hot once: the brass was covered in tiny dimples! A little less powder fixed that!

    Owned several DE’s over the years. .357,44,50AE. Not at one time. Like a lot of Firearms enthusiasts I bought, sold, traded in my younger years to get something. I found the .357 Desert Eagles the most consistently reliable (with recommended ammo) accurate and just plain FUN of all the calibers. It had the perfect combination (For Me) of power and controllability. The 50 AE was a Beast. Fun and pretty reliable (It was designed for DE) unlike the others that shoot revolver cartridges. Had DE’s, LAR Grizzlies, even a Conan and some AMT Automags at one time or another. The one gun I would LOVE to have again someday is a .357 DE. Only thing is price of firearm and Ammo prices. .357 going for 50-60 a box. I miss the days going out with my brother and Dad for an afternoon shooting in upstate PA (Tamaqua) used to be soooo much open land to explore. That was a lifetime ago. Dad’s gone, brother is 63 and in failing health and I’m 53. Seems like yesterday. A little off topic, just reminiscing about how shooting brought us all together and how much fun it was shooting and exploring. Happy New Year.

      I have the .44mag and the .50AE barrel for it. Both cycle FLAWLESSLY with LAX ammo's DE specific rounds. They are FMJ and fully rounded which seems to be the biggest help with the feeding issue. Also have Hornady hollow points for the .50 and they are amazing. After using it for the last 15 years I can say that aside from it being completely impractical, I would definitely feel comfortable using it for home defense.

    So, I do have an all stainless DE L6, which has the muzzle brake, which is how it came. I also bought a 44 barrel with brake and mags, and bolt. I also bought an older model .44 barrel and slide from a Mk7.
    The older slide fit on my frame, but the barrel needed very minor fitting, but it works. It cycles decent, but not as well as the newer slide and barrel
    I have had a handful of malfunctions in the .357, always the same as you are having here, but with the 44, only 2 malfunctions and those were it barely failed to return to battery, basically 1/8 of an inch in the first magazine. After that, 44 has been flawless.
    I have just over 600 rounds of .44 and around 700 of .357 through the gun. And yes ive had to change my action springs and extractor springs out with the newer orange poly spring.
    In studying these guns, I have learned that originally, the Mk1 and MkVII had slides and barrels both specific to the calibers. The frame dimensions were the same but you needed the entire upper to swap caliber along with mags. Then they came out with the Mk19, 50 AE, and when they did this, they also changed the geometry and design of the barrels and slide. This allowed the slide to be universal to caliber just needed a bolt change for 357 to 44, 429 or 50. They stopped making the older slide and barrels around this time and swapped everything over in production.
    The barrel went from a 2 piece to a 1 piece i think, but the newer style barrels sit higher up on the frame, which exacerbates the rounds catching on the feed ramp since as you pointed out is a very long cartridge.
    If you watch the gun cycle in slow mo in .357, the round is thrown around like crazy by the action, and the slide is noticeably cycling faster, and you can see how janky and haphazardly functional the design seems to be for .357 now. I think the older mk1 and mk7 guns are probably more reliable in .357 because of their geometry. The barrels sat lower to the frame resulting in less upward travel needed for the long 357.
    But the current production guns in the other calibers 44, especially .429 and 50, it appears to be much more reliable.
    Having said all of this, I love mine, its been a goat gun since I saw Last Action Hero, Snatch and The Matrix, and its simply a fun range toy. It is not for betting your life on 😂. Though it absolutely is intimidating af, just hope that you dont NEED all the rounds in the mag to cycle. Thats what a 92FS or P99 is for.

    Desert eagles are semiauto pistols, 357/44 are not designed for much more than 6 shooters so they don’t feed well. This is why magnum research came out with proprietary calibers like 429. I bought my DE .357 in 1985. I put 35,000 rounds through it. Most of it was the reloads that I made. In 1992 I blew up the gas piston on it. I sent it out to IMI and they repaired it for free. They also told me that I got one of the early ones and they had determined the gas ports were too small. They resolved that issue and it has worked great. They also sent me reloading data that made it run smoother than what I used. I also found JSP 158 grains worked the best. It was far cheaper to reload then than now. I carried that for many years. I used it for billing pin shoots and some competitions back then. It was funny one day when I was at the indoor range. A local female officer on the city shooting team was at the range with her fully compensated 1911. I walked in, set up the 4 mags, and did 3 magazine dumps. She came over to me because the big blast of a blue fire ring was extending out the port and those huge cases ejecting behind me. She asked me about the gun and asked me to try it. She fired a magazine and was impressed. She said it shot better that her competition 1911.

    @Honest Outlaw:
    You're definitely correct about the Desert Eagle being very picky eaters!!!! I have tried one box of the recommended ammo brands when I first shot it back in September 2021 and it kept jamming after almost every shot, due to the powder not being powerful enough to reliably cycle the cartridges fully.
    I have used another one of the recommended brands (Federal Premium/American Eagle) in my .44 Magnum awhile back, which performed a little better, but still had a couple malfunctions due to the weaker muzzle velocity. However, the 2 brands that wasn't recomended actually cycled the best, which was the Hornady XTP 240-grain Jacketed Hollow Points, and the Underwood Ammo XTP 240-grain/180-grain Jacketed Hollow Points. All of which cycled through the gun near-flawlessly, except when i'm not inadvertently limp-wristing it (as I had just gotten finished shooting a shotgun just a short time prior). Hell, even their 160-grain Xtreme Hunter's performed flawlessly as well.

    Most 357 nowadays is incredibly watered down. There's a huge variation in powder, burn rates, and charges that are used for it with some of the slower types of powder requiring over twice the charge weight of faster burning powders. Not a problem for a revolver but for an autoloading pistol, especially one that is gas operated, that relies on a specific pressure curve and volume of gas to function, it presents a massive engineering challenge especially with a gas system as short as this one. Imagine a 7.5 inch AR pistol and then getting it to cycle with half the normal powder charge while not beating itself to pieces on full power ammo. The number of manufacturers that load the 357 to it's true potential, can be counted on one hand. Underwood, Buffalo Bore, and Grizzly are the only three that come to mind of the top of my head. Not to mention getting a rimmed cartridge to feet from a box magazine is a tricky proposition at best.

    Love my 50ae Desert Eagle, put almost 800 rounds through it in the one year of owning it. One thing I've learned is that the .50 seems to have function issues when equipped with the integral muzzle brake. In my experience the muzzle brake is great but my friend with the brake has a bunch of issues feeding. We tried most all the ammo brands available and swapped around our mags and even tried an aftermarket mag (don't buy them) but we still had issues with his gun. He bought a solid barrel and hasn't had an issue yet. I think with ammo tuning either barrel is fine, but we are kinda limited in that aspect with .50 cal. Hope to pick up another mark 19 in .357 soon. Love the work!

      I love my .50, too--Stainless version. I purchased the muzzle brake one, and quickly replaced it with the standard solid barrel, also placing wrap-around finger-groove Hogue grips--changed the experience to perfect. Underwood, Steinel, and Big Grains ammo exclusively. Safe shooting!

      Damn that's at least $1600 worth of ammo haha I just went and blasted mine for the first time yesterday and that 50 is stout but not as bad as I thought recoil wise. Super accurate.
      I was blessed to get every caliber conversion barrel with my gun so I'm excited to see how it runs with 44 and 357 especially since I'm already set up to reload 357.
      Gotta love the Deagle. One step closer to my dream of having all the counter strike guns lol

    I had a 357 Desert Eagle when they first came out. Triggers were very heavy so the Smith at the range put a Ruger Redhawk "yellow" spring in the trigger/hammer mechanism. Also filed down the half cock spur so it went from a lowered sear face to firing. I'm not condoning this sort of thing, but that was the early Eighties. I was a reloader with a Chrony; therefore, always seeking fastest 158 to 160gr velocity. W296 and H110 were the fuel and primers came out FLAT, but Velocity was always more than 150 fps faster than any similar barrel revolver. One thing i don't remember was failures, and i shot it in a few bullseye matches. Unfortunately, I sold it to buy one of the first Freedom Arms 454 Casulls. That was and still is the most accurate handgun I've ever owned. Never felt the need to load it hotter than the load sheet from Freedom Arms. 🤣

    I have a 44mag Desert Eagle. Have had it for 30 years. Have never had a malfunction with it. Have shot brass but mostly, over the years, Blazer aluminum case with no issues. I don't know if 357 is just not enough energy for such a heavy gun with a bolt and twin recoil springs. Not sure. I would think hotter ammo would work well. As I said, not one malfunction in my 44 ever.

    Some AR bolts especially the phosphate it will have feeding issues like what this gun is exhibiting. There is just enough grip from the coating that the base of the cartridge is grabbing and cannot slide up the bolt face. I've fixed a bold like that by just using flitz and some micromesh on a piece of porcelain tile to polish the bolt face. Solved the problem.

    The 7.5 FK Brno psd pistol should make this totally obsolete. Its very very reliable, extremely well built, and shoots ammo that can drop 300 lb hogs at 100 meters with hydrostatic shock. That is all anyone could ever expect a pistol to do. And as a military sidearm the ammo is lighter, the range is better, and...oh ya....it actually works.

    I recommend polishing the feed ramp, a thorough cleaning and lubing, then hand-cycle the action while you're watching youtube videos. I had a rough 1911 that smoothed out after hand-cycling the slide several hundred times

    It appears that the cartridge rim may not be reliably feeding up under the extractor. Rim thickness/hardness could be an issue. That would explain why the aluminum feeds more reliably. Just a thought.

    To add on, you’re right about the ammunition though. How the Desert Bird (eagle) works to me is that you have to find weighted ammunition in order for the slide to work properly.
    In the near future, I’m going to try grain ammunition that is higher than 158.
    to see if it shoots fluently.

    Love my .44 DE. Soon as you take it out the firing range starts to quiet and then you have the feeling like your being watched and then start sending lead down range being chased by the 15" flame I easily is the crowd pleaser. 6 years ago I took t to a range and brought 30 rounds of ammo and I only got to shoot 10 of them. The rest I let other shooters get a taste...great gun.

    I have DE L5 .357. 158 grain brass is what I use, FMJ of course. You need that much powder to cycle it. You showed two of the best rounds. It takes breaking in. It likes to be a little wet. I have never had a jam with mine! It is super accurate and massively fun. I am a wheel gun lover. .357 Magnum is my favorite round for the reasons you gave. I carry a S&W 686+, also super accurate and fun...7 for sure. The L5 is a great target specialty gun. It turns heads at the range, and yeah, best shoot distant target...it can hit them, and fast! 😁 👍Thanks for the review.👍

    With the interchangeable barrels.
    I can do change it from a 9mm to a 357,to a 44mag or a 50cal , I give $4,500 for this gun back in the late 90s or early 2000s. Now every other barrel and magazine cost me more money as well, but I love this gun.

    Love the channel. I want to start this by saying that I have never fired the 357 Desert Eagle. As someone with 15,000 rounds through my Desert Eagle 50AE I can tell you one of the reasons for the failure to go back into battery. At about 6:35 in the video you gave a close-up of the open bolt. It appears to be very dry. The Eagle doesn't like that. Oil the crap out of it. The bolt and the plunger. When you think you have a little too much oil, put some more on. Everyone likes to grip the gun high, but that causes your right thumb to rest just under the slide stop. That will create enough friction to keep it from going back into battery as well. Lastly, only use Magnum Research mags. The Pro Mag people should be beaten with their magazines as they suck!
    Keep making the great content!

    All disappointments aside, one nice thing about the DE is that a would-be red dot sight would remain static and not reciprocate on the slide. That can be a VERY BIG advantage!

    I have an mk xix .50ae but no muzzle break. It is a gun I always wanted. I got a reload a Dillon 550. To be able to afford to shoot it.
    It is fun to shoot. I have lil baby hands so it looks silly and I don't often one-hand it.
    If any jams happen it is because of me or my reloads. The gun functions pretty well otherwise.

  • @BrianMcKinny
    @BrianMcKinny ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'd suggest that perhaps it's not just a feeding issue with the feed ramp being the culprit, but also you might look into heavier recoil springs. That's a heavy slide and it requires a lot of force to reciprocate it forward once the energy of the fired round has been expended. Look into getting heavier recoil springs for it and see how that helps you with going back into battery after firing. Another great video from you and the missus! You guys are a great team! Happy New Year to you both. :)
