I bought that same exact gun in 2015 for one of my Retirement guns, and have loved it ever since! Ordering it over phone with the factory was very easy and the Rep was super courteous!
Funny thing, the Anti-Gun crowd thinks easy ordering means anyone can legally buy a firearm. They ignore that an FFL must be on file to establish a sale between a licensed manufacturer and a licensed gun dealer, so you pay for the gun, and the transfer between FFLs occurs, then the end buyer must pass a background check and inscribe a 4473 form and a few other forms etc. Prohibited persons, felons, cannot legally purchase or own or possess firearms.
@@carminemurray6624 So true! I happen to live in Texas and have had my CHL permit since 1995, so it serves as a replacement for the NICs check, but the firearm still must be shipped from and to an FFL and I must still fill out the BATFE form 4473 in order to take possession. I know I'm reeeaaally late to the party on this one (and I apologize retroactively for the super-long comment), but HOLY COW, the Coonan! I worked at a gun store from the late 80's to the early 90's, and stared at one of these in the display case for months. I couldn't believe no one bought it, so finally I did, and LOVED it..!! There were stories of issues with them, which is why I think people gawked at it every day, always asking to handle it, but no one taking the plunge. The price might've had something to do with it, plus Para-Ordnance had just recently released their hi-cap 1911 frame kits (full pistols came later), so a lot attention was on those among the 1911-ers, leaving the Coonan to flounder as a curiosity. I shot the hell out of it, and it never once failed to function, and along with my trusty Ruger GP100 with the 6-inch full underlug barrel and target sites, I had two of the best .357 Magnums money could buy, as far as I was concerned... And being a woodworker, I made a new set of grips out of jet black fretboard ebony, on which I did some unusual sorta "checkering", roughly 8 Lpi, with the vertical serrations progressively angled (narrower at the top, wider at the bottom) so they were parallel with the front and back edges of the vaguely trapezoidal grip shape, and the horizontal serrations also progressively spaced, getting further apart as they went lower on the grip, to match the vertical ones and maintain the approximately square shape of the 'checks', each of which had a little circular hollow, or divot, in the middle. Also there was a nickel-sized stainless circle with '357' in the middle of the left grip, and 'MAG' on the right one, and stainless Torx grip screws. They came out really nice, and I actually made several similar sets for friends, all ebony, who wanted custom grips for their various 1911's. One last thing I loved on the Coonan, was the stock extended slide and safety levers, the way they almost meet over the plunger tube, very cool touch. I put better sights and a beavertail grip safety on it, along with an extended mag release, cos of that long reach from those stretched out grips. Damn... Yet another gun I really, really regret selling, along with the GP100, a P7 M13, a 96D Centurion, a 10mm Delta, a Nite-Tac LDA, on and on... If I had a nickel....

Was developed to punch through automobile doors and the like at the time. It was also partly a product of people like Elmer Keith who would hot rod the .38 Speial and .44 Special rounds. Elmer Keith is also a big reason why .44 Magnum exists. The .38 Super is a semi-auto counterpart, being a very hot loading of .38 ACP, but the .357 took the spotlight back then.

I know alot of people hate on the gun, some channels say its very unreliable but i have never seen one jam. Yes it only has around 7 rounds. But it is such a good looking gun. To me it seems reliable. Never shot one because i live in Australia.
Been wondering about these for years. Nice to see a good test. Gotta love well machined stainless steel. Pretty interesting engineering job, adapting to a long rimmed cartridge with significantly higher pressure. Great video as always. Thank you
good luck finding one. grizzly, coonan, amt all the autoloaders that came in magnum cartridges are dead. i want kel-tec to make one. lever action polymer build with a drum mag stock. probably bullpup or whatever.
I love This Gun and seeing Hickok45 shoot it just makes me so happy!.. I love taking this gun to the range, it is fun to shoot. I stick with the .357Mag rounds. It gets attention. A 1911 on steroids!.. At the range it sits in my Drop leg holster.. And I like the grips... Good grips.. I know Hickok45 didn't care for them but I do. Still love the guy to death. Personal choice. I avoid the .38 special rounds. I think that is the problem here. You need the .357Mag to cycle this gun and that's how I run my gun. Lot's of fun and really awesome! Dan Coonan did a great job with this gun!..
A fascinating gun, matching the ultimate proven combat cartridge with the classic John Browning design. Personally I prefer the striker fire for dependability, however this mating seems to make better sense than the likes of a Desert Eagle. If there was one 1911 pistol cartridge combo I feel I could trust my life would it would be this one for sure. Reputation is well deserved. Bravo to Buds Gun Shop for bringing this masterpiece to this channel.
It sure is awesome and hey, DPMS- Panther arms!!!! Fighting the good fight!! Now, if only you all can work on your fetchin sad, crazy, tainted, un-American politicians!!! How did what happened this past local MN election actually happen?? Hickok and son John should run next!!! Love the video content as always. Thank you and see if we can vote with our thumbs on this!
I've seen a vid on youtube where someone who owned one for 18 months and fired around 1000 shots, he said other than a few minor extraction malfunctions it never broke down on him.
Jeff Cooper loved 45 ACP, but stated that 357 Magnum was the best general purpose handgun cartridge in terms of lethality combined with ease of use. He conceived 10 mm as the best compromise approaching the overall suitability of 357 Magnum in a semi automatic handgun platform. In other words, a 1911. Y'all look out, it's coming...10mm case less armor piercing incendiary.
@@JoeKurr5 Now I'm never one to get upset at someone for being confused so I'll just clarify for you. The original commenter said that "the 1911 packs a punch no matter what you load". Implying, intentionally or not, that the 1911 itself has something to do with how powerful the cartridge is. Which of course it does not, as I said in my reply, it loads the same ammo as everything else. A 45acp or 9mm is not more powerful coming out of a 1911 than it is any other gun with the same length barrel. I've been silhouette shooting for around 12 years and have owned guns since the 90s. So yes to your question, I am aware. Though you'll see a slight velocity loss when firing a round from a revolver than you would with that same round in a semi-auto.
Good evening to all the friends of the channel so far here in Brazil we still can not have the freedom to still have guns, but the laws are changing, I'm a fan of this caliber .357 MG, I would like to ask for Mestre hickok45 how many potential jails in the mouth of the pipe? I wanted one of these in the 80's when I was 'trying' to buy every iteration of the 357 I could find. Ordered at the local gun shop and waited and waited... never arrived. Coonan was always closing their doors and restarting their business over the years. Today in 2020 they are restructuring and in the process of starting again. I never got my 357-1911 and likely never will. Shame. Nice gun, cool idea.

I know alot of people hate on the gun, some channels say its very unreliable but i have never seen one jam. Yes it only has around 7 rounds. But it is such a good looking gun. To me it seems reliable. Never shot one because i live in Australia.
Entertaining and informative as always! You are my go to when looking for quality reviews! Having said that, I'm going to have to get me a Coonan
Hope they can do one in .460XVR.
The dude can sure shoot!!!
Hickok45 is the best youtube gun channel best rumble shot sound so satisfied.
Made right here in Minnesota.
🎤🎹🥁 Cold like Minnesota 🎶🎵 🤷🏻♀️
It sure is awesome and hey, DPMS- Panther arms!!!! Fighting the good fight!!
Now, if only you all can work on your fetchin sad, crazy, tainted, un-American politicians!!! How did what happened this past local MN election actually happen??
Hickok and son John should run next!!! Love the video content as always. Thank you and see if we can vote with our thumbs on this!
I wonder how this gun holds up to continuous use. The 357 is pretty hot. I wonder if that cartridge puts more stress on a semi auto's frame.
+Nicholas Evans Best comment on here. Love this gun, but the extra pressure will eventually wear the dickens out of that frame. Emergency only! haha
+avitas4 that's what I was thinking. I look at 357 sig Glock's and 10mm
+avitas4 well im sure only after thousands of rounds and years of use.
+Nicholas Evans Seems likely, but if the spring is properly calibrated for a standard 357 I'd hope it would mostly be mitigated.
I've seen a vid on youtube where someone who owned one for 18 months and fired around 1000 shots, he said other than a few minor extraction malfunctions it never broke down on him.
How does he stay SO still?? Truly amazing shooting.
I was amazed how fast you hit the gong! The gun is so loud it's hard to hear the hits.
The dude is a good shot!
I've been wanting one of these for years. I just haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.
i love his reaction to those beastly rounds haha such a boss, the 1911 packs a punch no matter what you load
As much as any other handgun I guess? 1911s fire the same ammo as every other gun.
@@codyallen2838 did you ever find out that not all guns fire the same cartridge?
Enjoyed the review, a good mix of specs & common sense. Great job John on the video production too.
hickok has the long hands for this gun
Was thinking the same thing. The longer round makes the grip bigger front to back.. a flat mainspring cover definitely makes sense for that piece
great camera!!
love all your vids on the 1911 :)
GEEZ. This grandpa is BOLD. No mercy for any target.
This memorial day, take a few minutes to remember the two litres and their service
Man, the 60FPS looks pretty good.
+Carlos Aponte Didn't think there was anyone else in the siren community that likes guns.
Love shooting. Also love sirens. Well met :)
Hickok45, you have to be the luckiest man alive, You have more fun than anybody has a right too..I ALWAYS enjoy your video's
No conocía está hermosa arma y se mira poderosa, saludos cordiales desde México.
Lo unico malo que tiene Mexico lindo son las pinches leyes contra armas y municiones, no debe ser asi.
This, 357 Magnum, is a non military caliber. Legal in Mexico? If not, go 9mm largo. 38 Super.
Good evening to all the friends of the channel so far here in Brazil we still can not have the freedom to still have guns, but the laws are changing, I'm a fan of this caliber .357 MG, I would like to ask for Mestre hickok45 how many potential jails in the mouth of the pipe? I really like weapons as a pleasure to spend an afternoon with friends shooting, for me a .22 would already be of good use, maybe one day I will go to America and meet the Master hickok45, I will feel a lot of joy and admiration, of course autographs and photos , and a shootings, and a barbecue juices and friends, something healthy to be with people of good, thank you for the excellent material of the channel, a hug everyone and stay with the holy Peace of God.
Stupid!
Brazil is a shithole.
Saw an opportunity to show us the .38 when you disassembled. Would have been neat.
Exceptionally Cool!!! I Want One!!!! 🤠👍
I had the same hat until it fell apart. I loved that damn hat.😥
When is the next shooting the breeze coming out?! That is my favorite series thus far
John B Soon.
hickok45 you should test a 460 rowland in your 1911s. it is another 1911 revolver hybrid. its only $200
hickok45 its a $200 barral and spring set to change over your 1911 to 460 rowland
such a sweet piece... but damn, 1,500-1,800 all the way up to 2,000+ bucks, even on gunbroker..... that's a good chunk of change. but still, f"n sweet nonetheless.
the straight grip safety is so classy . love it
Did anyone else hear the first shot skip up from the dirt and ring a steel target down range?!
probably hit a rock, and the rock flew and hit a close metal target.
Yep, heard that.
Love my Coonan! I carry it.. Awesome handgun....
For me coonan is the best magnum 1911 pistol!
0:07 you hit targets even when you dont aim at them :)
