You forgot the size problem, both of those "keys" are supposed to be the same size as the kingdom key, so the actual size is supposed to be massive like Cloud's buster sword which means it's super heavy
One important thing to remember about the X-blade is that it's actually way bigger than the replica you have, which mitigates the problem of the guard making it akward to use. But yeah, it's less of a sword and more of a reality altering artefact made of pure light and pure darkness combined, so it's understandable if it's focus is less on slashing and more on casting big spells.
It's kinda like the 7 branched sword. It carries a different power than just wielding it in combat. With the 7 branched sword, its ceremonial and a sign of leadership With the X-blade, it comes with powers to alter and destroy reality.
It also wouldn't have the problem of 'not being able to penetrate fully' The replica is already large enough to go most of the way through a person. The full sized version would easily make it through.
Honestly, if there's 1 thing I like about the "X-Blade's" design, it IS how impractical and uncomfortable the damn thing looks to use as a weapon. If I'm right: its function is to command Kingdom Hearts (the big flipping moon heart), and that's it. It just so happens to have so much magic power packed into it to do its initial job, that you're able to do other things with it. And on the design, this blade is supposed to be the TOP Keyblade, you should be able to tell that it is at a glance. And super-gluing 2 of the most iconic keys on it and slapping a blade on top will get that job done. Long story short: I like how it looks like it's just supposed to be a mantlepiece, and yet people insist on fighting with it. It's probably the most impractical, uncomfortable weapon I've ever laid my eyes on, but it definitely leaves an impression because of that
Yes, this is exactly my thoughts on it. It really leans into what I think is the core attribute of KH, which is absurdity. I love how ridiculous and cheesy, and yet still oddly deep and moving these games can be.
The Kingdom Hearts plot makes perfect sense if you follow it in order. The only reason people get confused is because they learn plot details from later games without the years of context they're supposed to have.
what actually is going on in Kingdom Hearts, literally my only exposure to the game itself is watching someone do Level 1 challenge runs and it looks batshit insane to me for requests, how about Areadbhar and some of the other Relics from Fire Emblem Three Houses?
Uhhhhhhhhhh, that's a big ask, but basically, darkness an actual substance in these games starts devouring worlds and spreads monsters known as the heartless. Sora the mc and weilder of the keyblade is the only one who can send the hearts they steal back to kingdom hearts. His world gets swallowed, and he ends up a traverse town . A world where people go when they lose theirs. He then meets Donald and goofy, who at the request of King mickey finds him and starts a journey to rid the world's of darkness. And find their friends who went missing.
Isn't it functional just a bo staff with the added ability to be any length, which is an objective upgrade? I mean canonically it's insanely heavy but that doesn't really matter because Sun Wukong has super strength. Unless you're talking about a specific version where it's different, but Journey to the West has so many adaptations and the character of Sun Wukong has probably twice as many that just he's in, so you really need to soecify.
The fact that NO weapons reviewer in all of TH-cam ever has or ever will say anything positive about the design practicality says more than enough about the design practicality
I know you get a lot of request for stuff but it would so cool for you to review the pure nail or at least the regular nail from Hollowknight. I know it’s really simple but I’d like to see your thoughts on it.
To be fair, this isn't accounting for being able to fly around, make it shapeshift, just generally do cool magic stuff with it, and being able to unlock the ultimate object of power in the universe.
I haven't seen anyone mention this yet so I'm gonna say it. While you're right about much of this you're overlooking the fact that the turquoise segments are also meant to be sharpened contact points of the blade. As stated by others it's a magical weapon without the need to properly obey physics.
Honestly, I think the χ-blade being impractical in combat is perfect. It wasn’t designed to be used in combat in the first place; it’s more just a happy accident that it has so much power to perform its intended function that it is powerful enough for people to still use it for combat despite its design flaws. Since combat wasn’t its intended purpose, it makes sense that its design is poorly suited for it. The actual purpose is to control/summon Kingdom Hearts, aka the heart of all worlds. As a key to the series’s namesake, it naturally incorporates the most iconic weapon/item in the series: the Kingdom version of the Keyblade. (This is also representative of it being a key to the Kingdom Hearts.) It is also meant to represent a balance between the light and darkness in people’s hearts, hence the use of two keyblades (one of light and one of darkness) fused together and it having a line of perfect symmetry. The keyblades are crossed in the shape of a χ, both indicative of its name and as the metaphorical X that marks the spot of the Kingdom Hearts. They aren’t parallel or antiparallel because light and darkness do, in fact, meet each other, but they aren’t collinear because they are still opposing forces to each other. Light and darkness are constantly in conflict, but they are also bound to each other. Light will create darkness through shadows, while darkness can never blot out the light entirely. The intricate… I-don’t-know-what-it’s-called around where the keyblades meet could be like a pair of wings, akin to either an angel or a demon, or rays of light to indicate its power and that the “true nature” of Kingdom Hearts is, ultimately, light, and how light ultimately prevails over darkness, but I think it looks more like a grid converging to a point, indicating how all worlds meet at Kingdom Hearts, and light and darkness meet at the χ-blade. It is also needlessly complicated, much like the entire plot of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, and the convergence could also represent how all the side-stories and spin-offs are all canon and ultimately converge into one larger plot. After all, the χ-blade is the key to Kingdom Hearts, not just the in-universe thing but also the franchise named after it, and, together with the Kingdom Hearts it leads to, it is ultimately the point where everything in the franchise converges. The fan-thing also looks relatively fragile compared to the rest of it, representing how delicate and fragile the balance between light and darkness is. My headcanon is that the pointy part is intended so it can sit tip-down in a pedestal or something like the Master Sword or the Sword in the Stone. Like, I’m just picturing it sticking out of the tip of a mountaintop in the Keyblade Graveyard while the 7 Lights and 13 Darkness fight for, towards, and around it in a neverending struggle, and only the victor is capable of removing it from its resting place. Design-wise, aside from the singular keychain attached to the handles (though by two chains that link together), it is the only part that there isn’t two (or more in the case of places to hold it, tips, blades in a general sense, and wardings) of-two handles, two key-blades (as in the blade of a key), two shafts, two bows/guards, two fan-things, two places where they composite keyblades meet (one at the intersection of their shafts and one where their bows meet), and two chains (connected to a singular keychain-bobble). This could represent how, despite being made of two keyblades and two forces (light and dark), it is just one χ-blade, not two blades. It’s also the only part of the χ-blade that looks sharp or stabby, perhaps to represent how its existence instigated both the massive Keyblade War fought in the distant past in Kingdom Hearts lore as well as the major conflict(s) of the series as a whole that we actually do get to experience in the games; it is incredibly divisive, turning former comrades against each other (according to the lore of the aforementioned war as well as in some modern examples, like turning Xehanort against Eraqus, Vanitas against Ventus, and Isa/Saïx against Lea/Axel), and the ultimate-albeit often indirect-cause of many deaths and violent conflicts. Its pointed tip-especially when combined with that fan thing if we think of it like fletching-makes it act like an arrow for pointing, which, much like its cross-shape, reflects how it points the way to Kingdom Hearts. This sharp tip is hollow, which could be another representation of the idea of convergence, much like the cross-shape the keyblades form and the fan-thing: the two blades converge to a sharp point, prior to which they are separated. However, I like to think it is hollow to represent how attaining it is a hollow victory. In the Keyblade War, so many died that whoever won would have done so at such a high cost that one could reasonably wonder if it was all worth it. For both Vanitas and Xehanort, they managed to attain the χ-blade but wound up losing anyways soon afterwards, so it was a hollow victory. For Sora and the gang, they won but at great cost, and any feelings of satisfaction or pride or anything like that from their victory are muted as a result. They’re all rather hollow victories in the end. It could also be like the railroad tracks that appear to converge in the distance, or like looking at half of an intersection, thinking its a V when you’re only looking at half of an X. What appears to be the endpoint turns out to be just another event in the timeline, too; what looks like the final destination and where it all ends is just the beginning of a new story. Then there are the two chains that combine into one chain attached to a singular keychain-bauble. I think that they represent the chains of fate that bind people together, both in the sense that they bring people together and that they force people to follow their destinies. These chains can unite people together, but they can also ensure that two foes/rivals will meet each other in conflict, likely repeatedly, and that is inevitable. It also represents the fate of those who walk the path of light or the path of darkness, bound to fight those who walk the other path in an endlessly repeating war between light and darkness. But it can also represent the chains of fate that tie friends together, again representing the true nature of Kingdom Hearts as being of Light. No matter how physically distant two friends may be, their hearts are forever bound together by their bonds of friendship.
Well, considering magic exists in KH, something being designed for the aesthetic isn't an issue. Another thing to consider is that the prop you have is just not in scale with the X-Blade in the game. Also, I know people joke about the plot of Kingdom Hearts being complicated, but really all you have to do is to play it in release order. It flows much better that way than any other way.
I can't remember if you guys have covered them before, but I'd like to see what you think of the practicality behind the Kunai knives used in Naruto. Would the design that we typically see in pop culture actually be practical in a fight?
Well you need to take into consideration that Sora literally sliced sky scrapers in half despite the blade being very blunt. They both hit very hard and use magic in their final battle as well and the key chains I believe enhance your magic or strength depending on the Keyblade
I will say in canon these issues aren’t really an issue. Basically the X-Blade is able to transform itself to the whims of the user. So the issue of not fully puncturing someone is a nonissue as the blade can just grow in length until it does. Same with the guard as it will bend around your arm to allow proper blade alignment. IRL it’s god awful though.
