  • And now we return to blood vessels. In this episode, we start discussing what blood pressure is, how it can become "high", and what that means for our health. One of the more interesting points is that your body has ways of dealing with high blood pressure, but they're not ways we want our bodies to operate on a full-time basis. And why can't we butter our bacon? WHY!?!?!

This'll probably sound really weird, but I feel like learning about biology really helps you to have a positive body image.
In my case at least, the more I learn about human anatomy/physiology, the harder it is for me to see my body as anything other than this incredibly complex 'machine' that needs to be cared for. Whereas before, I'd have looked at my reflection and noticed so many flaws I can barely count them, I now can't help but admire how all of these complex processes work together to form a functioning human. Eating's become about providing my body with the nutrients it needs to thrive, rather than a time when I worry about how many calories X has.
Does that make sense? Probably not. Excuse my ramblings.

I've thought the same thing! It's hard to remain caught up on your insignificant flaws when you know how incredibly complex your body is, AND how hard it is working to keep you healthy! Nothing but gratitude for it xD

Em Penrose yes the same thing happened to me when I started learning about all of this. It makes me so sad now to be mean to my body, when it is constantly working so hard to keep me going. It is just so incredible. I want to make its many jobs as easy as possible... it motivates me to eat healthy and exercise.

What helped me understand the visual difference between LDL and HDL cholesterol:
LDL is low-density lipoprotein, meaning it's less packed together. Think of this like throwing a handful of pudding on a wall. It will stick and slide down the wall. Same with your blood vessels.
HDH is high-density lipoprotein, meaning it's more packed together. Think of this as a baseball. If you throw a baseball at a wall, it will bounce off the wall; same with your blood vessels, it will just continue on its way.

Watching this video actually inspired me to go for a blood pressure test after I'd felt a few symptoms for the last several weeks. It was recorded at 160/90!!! (seriously high, especially as i'm only 19). 3 days into medication + swimming and it's down to 120/80

Overall, another nicely produced, insightful video. However, the caption at 5:38 unfortunately contains an error. Stimulation of beta receptors (specifically beta 2 receptors) in the blood vessels by epinephrine and norepinephrine actually causes vasodilation, while it's the stimulation of alpha receptors by these same hormones that leads to vasoconstriction. Usually the alpha receptor action predominates, which is why epinephrine and norepinephrine leads to vasoconstriction and increased vascular resistance.
So while beta blockers lead to modest reductions in blood pressure on account of less forceful contractions of the heart and slower heart rate, they do not lead to dilated blood vessels (with the exception of beta blockers that also have intrinsic alpha blocking properties, such as carvedilol). It should also be noted that while beta blockers are used to treat hypertension, they are no longer first or even second-line therapy in situations that lack another compelling indication for them (e.g. heart failure, coronary artery disease - a.k.a. "heart disease").
I'm sorry if this seems like nitpicking, and I hope your fans don't pile on this comment - it really is an overall great video. I just don't want any viewers to get confused if they find it contradicts their textbook.

@ 5:57 Juxtaglomerular cells of the kidneys release renin, which can convert angiotensinogen released by the liver* (and not the kidney) into angiotensin 1 which is then converted to angiotensin 2 by ACE in capillaries. The angiotensin 2 is what raises blood pressure.

Is there any consensus on how similar any two people's circulatory systems are? I know things like cancer can grow their own blood vessels so at the smaller scales it's got to be pretty flexible, but there are lots of named blood tubes too. So at what point do things fade into a unique, person-specific arrangement?

  • @Nightraven26

I have low blood pressure, it's way better than having high blood pressure. I'm at lower risk for a ton of different health problems.
Conversely though, exercise is hard for me because blood doesn't get as fast to my body parts as most other people's would, and if I get up too fast I'm at risk for fainting.
What's really scary though is that most of the diseases that cause low blood pressure are really dangerous. Right now we don't know. Might be hypothyroidism.

At 4:43 when he says: "when blood pressure stretches due to high pressure" is this stretch a reduced radius (vasoconstriction)? So my question is why use the word stretch when the vessels are becoming smaller in radius? When I heard stretch I think of expansion
(increased radius). Hopefully someone can answer to this!

I don't know if it's too late but whatever. He's talking about when the blood pressure is too high, it will push against the walls of the arteries (in this case the carotid where there are baroreceptors). The force against the artery wall will cause it to stretch a little. When I say stretch I mean that the artery itself is expanding because there's just too much blood moving through it, you can also think of it as ballooning out. The stretch and force is detected by baroreceptors which send signals to the brain; if the force against the artery wall is really high (causing them to stretch) then that means the blood pressure may be too high and it will vasodilate to lower blood pressure. It can also signal the heart to decrease heart rate to decrease flow.

after years of watching crash course(the same videos over and over) i randomly decided to read the tabs in the intro. Whoever in thoughtcafe did the graphics for the intro randomly added in Evel Kneivel is from Montana. Ammm ok what does that have to do with A&P lol.

I am exactly the same way. Especially since sometimes I do get anxiety thinking about my heart and whether or not it is healthy.

interesting to think, though, that regular exercise, which increases heart rate and blood pressure, is actually good for you in the long term.

When your heart gets too strong I think the walls weaken too because they are overstretched and are too thin. Kind of scary. That is why hypertension is a big deal.
