      you know.... All this complex, integrated, and functional development that happened to occur randomly. But If I claim that a factory exploded in the middle of no where, and please don't ask me where this factory comes from, and after millions of years I told you that in the rubble I found a perfectly functional rolex (against the second law of thermodynamic) would you not look at me like I'm crazy. Do you know much more complex one simple cell is in comparison to the finest rolex. But they'll teach this foolishness as fact and call you a religious nut or fool if don't believe it. In some countries you can't even receive a high school diploma if don't believe in this forced foolishness.

    • @mrconch7238
      @mrconch7238 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      not an appropriate comparison at all. Biological/evolutionary processes have the ability (so to speak) to 'throw out' forms and functions which do not work. More importantly, forms and functions which do work are kept. Also, its billions of years - a number large enough you (and I) cannot really comprehend.

    • @TimberWulfIsHere
      @TimberWulfIsHere 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Matt Contreras it's not comprehendable because it's not true, there is overwhelming evidence against the belief of millions of years. Millions of years also do not bring new functions or traits in all species, natural selection and mutation can only use information that is there or remove information.

    • @mrconch7238
      @mrconch7238 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I wasnt talking to you originally, I was speaking to "rationalthinker".
      Millions of years is not a "belief": its a conclusion based on observation and evidence.
      Otherwise I'm not sure I understand what you are really talking about as it's not articulated very clearly, sorry.

    Thank you so much Hank Green and the whole Crash Course, you are my favorite teacher of TH-cam. Here's my general process of working with your (mainly chemistry, biology, and anatomy) courses: watch each video several times, read on the same subject in one of my science books, lather, rinse, repeat. I'm 20 years out of school but have never had the total understanding then as a student of these subjects then as I do now. Learning for the love of it is so much more effective than rushing to take it all in for the next assignment, quiz, or exam, and that it what your courses help me do.

    • @sion8
      @sion8 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Me too! I have always wondered why do we have control of our breathing while also being involuntary, yet not of our heart beats? Both are needed to life but we can stop breathing voluntarily meaning not that much O2 while that happens.

    • @RockSprites
      @RockSprites 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Uzumaki Naruto Just goes to show how susceptible our minds and bodies are to suggestion.

    • @Timka09
      @Timka09 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      sion8 I think it's because we need to be able to temporarily stop breathing when we're submersed in water or surrounded by smoke. You don't have complete control of your breathing though, you can't hold your breath for too long for example. There isn't any reason for us to have such control of our heart rate, none that would have made it more likely for our ancestors to reproduce anyway.

    • @RockSprites
      @RockSprites 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, when considering heart rate -- it can be regulated by will and thought. It is advantageous in certain situations to control heart rate. Fear and anxiety help us in survival situations, but too much fear/stress can be harmful and prevent us from solving problems. So, regulating breathing and heart rate are useful in other ways, right?

    • @Timka09
      @Timka09 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RockSprites Our nervous system control the heart rate involuntarily much better than we would do voluntarily. Or it would if our lifestyles didn't change so rapidly in the past few thousand years (or maybe tens of thousands). The human population didn't have enough time or selective pressure to adapt to these changes. Besides, when it comes to stress and anxiety it's better to control the hormones in your blood rather than directly controlling your heart rate.

    Breathing actually has a lot of things to do with amblyopia, a neurological disorder that shuts down one of your eyes. With basic stretching of your nostril on your weak side you get big improvement. I don't if that's a solution to amblyopia but it definitely helps. Our brain only takes one side of oxygen, try it for yourself, you only breathe through one nostril.

    So how does the body deal with food/liquid/objects that accidentally fall through larynx/trachea?

    • @GarethField
      @GarethField 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Coughing

    • @AlexanderEmmanual
      @AlexanderEmmanual 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gareth Field I mean what happens when it falls through the trachea?

    • @GarethField
      @GarethField 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Oh, well, if it gets deep down there, the immune system will surround it in mucus and destroy it, and remove the resultant stuff via the lymphatic system. If it's not so deep, it can still get surrounded in mucus and coughed up. If the immune system fails to deal with it, either it will just stay there, or the person dies from infection or something. I think that's the gist of it.

      The epiglottis in your body will prevent that. If it does happen to get past the epiglottis (probably cause u ate too fast or you were talking while eating) u will violently cough it out.

    • @VirginiaMay94
      @VirginiaMay94 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Basically what Garth field said. You have several reflexes in your body that keep food/liquids from going where they shouldn't go, even if it manages to get past the epiglottis you still have your carinal reflux to help expel it (where the two bronchi stem off from). If you get to much fluid, like if you vomit and then it goes down your lungs, or you have a near drowning experience, you can get pneumonia. But in general if it's just a little fluid that wouldn't happen.
