Drives me crazy how dog training is made to feel so complicated now for people when in real terms it’s simple and all about communicating in a methods they understand. It’s certainly not with treats for everything that do. Learning online has been partially to blame, you can’t become a good dog trainer without getting your hands on dogs. When you can become a certified trainer in weeks online, that’s a problem and bad for the industry. There’s a reason your channel is growing, people resonate with what you do and it works.
You are so right. I'm tired of the bullshit. No disciple. They don't know how to truly rehab dogs. Their own species correct them but we as humans incl myself as a certified behaviorist and trainer for too many decades ++++ I'm just tired if these idiots always saying no corrections /discipline. I was walking my puppy the other day and saw this with a "Dog trainer" keeping this person's dog at 20ft because any closer would set it off rewarding the dog for waiting at that range not allowing it any closer then this, the dog is still on a harness which adds to the problem as all this dog wanted to do was charge my puppy, not great training from the trainer. Me and my puppy just doing a calm heel work session around the football pitch so I was able to watch, great for my training since he's only 5 months, not so sure if I helped theirs though. I believe older dogs need that touch/"Dog bite" to remind them who's leading the situation and what's acceptable behaviour and what's not. It would have help that dog a lot, luckily my spanador is food driven and young enough to be redirected easily, he's turning out to be a great puppy due to some of these types of trainers on Yt. Thanks to the good dog owners out there.
This is going to sound stupid but if I hadn't found your channel when I did, I wouldn't have adopted my new dog! I was fostering a rescued street dog from another country and he would choke himself on the slip lead and a harness would make him pull harder. I was looking forward to him finally getting adopted and leaving because my arms hurt and I was so tired, mentally and physically. I started using a halti head collar and followed your techniques, the change can not be over stated! He doesn't pull, he doesn't react to other dogs, he isn't possessive nor reactive to cyclists any more. The change was so drastic, I could enjoy walking him. Heck, even my disabled mother is able to walk him now. So he decided we wanted to adopt him ourselves and now he's a member of our family! He's only been with us 5 weeks today so your techniques truly work and they work fast! Thank you so much!
this is fast becoming my favorite channel on youtube. it's like a contractor showing a homeowner how to use certain tools properly, but with dogs. (albeit extremely difficult and patience demanding, Joel's methods work on my Basenji. that's saying a lot.)

@@chonky2129 I’ve had two Basenjis. One lived 16yrs, second 18yrs. Four Dobermans starting 1976. My Basenjis taught me how to work with a dogs mind and motivate with treats and keep sessions short. One must be consistent and the boss, like Joel. Basenjis are extremely intelligent and independent workers. Love the looks they give you “ are you kidding? you want me to do what!” My current dogs, two Dobes ,strong working dogs, love to work for you, but you still must be the boss. I started training classes with all of my dogs early in life, but Joel’s training gives you confidence and the everyday direction you need to make a perfect bond with your dog. That black Kelpie at the end was still pretty freaked out by her! Look at its legs and back, that's a very tense dog there! Some dogs are simply very domineering. These videos make our morning dog walk very interesting.
I don't think the kelpie was freaked out at all. It's just a serious but calm meeter. Smart confident dogs know when another dog is unsure how to act so they put out the energy to let the dog know they aren't going to tolerate disrespectful behaviour. I think the white dog learned more from that encounter than from anything else up until that point.
Thanks YET AGAIN Joel for another great video! This is great for people to watch with dogs like this, where you're not really certain how your dog will react to certain dogs because they show some worrying signs. The owners were right to be cautious. This is a dog that will need monitoring and careful introductions to the RIGHT dogs. She has potential to be bad, but with the right combo of dogs clearly she can be good. Big posing personality. This is a great explanation video where not all dogs are compatible. That's just the reality of it, some dogs get along, others not so much. Always heart warming to see these kinds of dogs make friends because the owners were not certain, but she can be good! Recently adopted a "shepherd mix" that is probably a Belgian Malinois. This is how I planned to intro him to dogs. This video helps refine my plan and reinforce that I'm doing right by a handful of a 1 yo puppy.

I wish you could have clubs of people that follow what you do and want to get their dogs with other dogs. I'm extremely hesitant to have my dogs meet other dogs because I don't trust that the other person has control of their dogs like I have with mine. We need a Beckman's followers club in every state or something lol.
Helpful as always. I love your style of cool and calm/subtle but firm. I have a 5 month old and your puppy stages video has been incredibly helpful. I don’t expect my crazy 5 month old puppy to act like a 2 year old dog. People always say stay calm, but you go further and actually show what calm confident and firm actually looks like. Love it. I was walking my girl with a male friend and I let him take the leash - he wanted to show me how I should be walking my dog. He sheepishly gave back the leash after 3 minutes. His very exaggerated physical and verbal corrections did the opposite what the intent was.
Omg! This is so helpful! My dog is worse than that, and she wears a muzzle at all times but I do want to practice meeting new dogs. I never used the leash with new meetings because I thought it could be a trigger, but this is great. Wow this content is what I needed!!!

Well done once again, Joel. These corrections are so important for a dominant female energy that needs the feedback to have a successful interaction on or off leash with consistency - I especially applaud how you immediately corrected the human for wanting to pet her after that first correction she gave, perhaps she thought you meant for her to say hi but in general there is WAY to much of that going on in the world where the mixed mesages of corrections/feedback for an infraction and the value of human touch and petting the dog immediately after, I tell clients similarly how we need to create clear consistent communication in all aspects and phases of training and behavior education,. bravo 👏
definitely love the dog meetings for the first time. I feel like the first one is the most realistic to what we encounter in real life scenarios but the repetition you do shows the progression really nicely. Curious how well dogs maintain that once leaving your facility where this situation isn't easily reproduced in a quick fire way with many dogs. I struggle to move the needle with my bulldog, he's pretty stubborn or I'm still sucking at corrections
Every Video you show helps me to understand the behaviour of dogs. Seeing the reaction is worth gold 😃 I wanted to mention even though you "new" channal icon is nice and seeing the whole family is great. I personally don't think it's serves the function well. It's at least at my screens so small I don't recognise anything; its only black and white "noise". In my channel overviews I can't assign it to "Beckman's Dog Training" intuitively.
Please do more videos on first introductions for dominant, rough player dogs who take themselves too seriously (esp. herding breeds). I love your channel. Thank you to you and your family.
Really helpful video, we have a 3 year old cockapoo. She seems to behave similarly & also barks aggressively to other dogs walking by. I’am going to ditch the pulling harness & purchase a face harness with lead instead. Been studying your videos about dominant dogs & will be putting your advice to practice very soon. 🤞🤞🤩
Simple answer: don't use a head harness. It can cause really bad injurys on the dog's neck, especially when it is used without an extra leash on a normal collar (like it's shown in this and other videos of this animal abuser). If you lead your dog with only one lead point exclusively at the head harness, permanent tension on the leash can lead to the dog's head being crooked. This causes tension and can even cause damage to the joints and the entire musculoskeletal system of your dog in the long run. In particular, jerky movements on the leash attached to the dog harness can cause enormous injuries to the dog's cervical spine. For example, if your dog suddenly jumps on the leash because it sees a cat or the archenemy, its head will be jerked to the side when it jumps forward quickly. In the worst case, this can even lead to a broken neck if the leash is run long. Every single dog trainer in germany knows that, and if you go to a dog training with a head harness on your dog, you will have to listen to a long lecture, how dangerous a head harness is, and how it damages the communication between you and your dog. Then the trainer will show you better methods to communicate and to change the line of sight of your dog in a better way. But this man here is not a good trainer (well, he has "worked" with wild animals like killer whales for 18 years - have you seen "Blackfish"? He must be cruel an abusive, otherwise you wouldn't do such a job for so many years.). His timing is always extremely bad, his methods are based only on dominance, violence and force, and his corrections, for example when he shows how to work with a leash, are so arbitrarily, that he becomes unpredictable for every dog (I've seen a video from him, in which the leashed dog tries to bite him after a few minutes of "training", because it doesn't know what's the sense of the "trainers" pointless tugging). For what he is doing with his Dobermann (abusing him to "correct" other dogs, what's just a paraphrase for beating them up) in Germany he would be sentenced for animal cruelty. It can be seen in every single video with this Dobermann that this dog is not happy, and that he almost fear this man. I wonder why nobody realized the manifestly body language of this dog (i think it's because i nearly don't understand what the "trainer" is babbling and concentrate more on what I'm seeing). For example watch his video "Learn how to raise dogs like Prince and Bosco" without sound, search my comment there an put it in the google translator.

@tazer7711 Yeah it’s difficult because someone in the house just had a major operation and needs constant care right now. All the howling isn’t helping. We don’t know what to do to reduce or get control at the least.
I have a 5 months old puppy and she essentially does this, trys to always get on top on her old brother (he doesn't like it) and any other dog that she meets she always looking to dominate or get top of them, is 5-6 months a good age Start corrections with a leash for this behavior? My 5 month old puppy does not have good social skills and greets dogs just like this. But w\so much excitement. I'm having a hard time making good introductions. Should I go buy a gentle leader or a muzzle right away?? She is a pit lab beagle mix.
Its a flank touch not a butt touch. I have been watching the channel since the beginning but if I am wrong please correct in comment. Sometimes he refers to butt and flank interchangeably but they are different area's.

Have seen several videos of trainers saying leash introductions are not good for reactive dogs. Am so confused. Is it ok or not to let my reactive/overly excited dog meet other dogs on leash?
Hi! My female american akita (almost 2 years old) is EXACTLY like this, and I'm like that owner, I don't let her get close to any dog on walks, sadly is beacause we haven't met almost any well balanced dog like Prince so dogs react very bad to her, because she looks bad at them in a "jerky" way and she reacts back; and because people here are very soft with their dogs, so if I correct her like you do, to them is abusive. She has one dog friend, and she is like this to this dog too, we see him almost every day and every time she sees him, she jumps on him and growls, and even if I correct her every time, she keeps doing it. I still correct her and after 10-20 seconds she's good and we go on walks or they play at the dog park, but it is like she feels the need to "remind him" who is the boss. Also she's the type that goes to the neck, not to hurt or latch to the dog, but other owners think she is agressive. Other thing is, where we live people think that if a dog is on a muzzle is because they are deadly agressive, so they don't come close to you, and it is hard to introduce new dogs. I hope you read this Joel, I want to know if this dog friends is enough, because she plays with him almost every day, or if we need to meet new dogs; she doesn't like other females and she's been in 2 fights with males because of her dominance (she is usually good with males). Her triggers are submissive dogs, running dogs, and reactive dogs, and if a dog wants to "challenge" her, she fights. Other than that she is good 😩 haha

I know how you feel about other owners judging you! I've had people comment on just the fact my dog has a halti head collar on, to correcting him like Joel or even just doing a sit and stay while a dog passes by. It seems other people always have something to say about everything and it's annoying! Their dog barks and growls at mine? They pet their dog, reinforcing the damned behaviour! If I correct mine, I'm cruel and abusive 🙄 On the rare occasion I do pass another dog on a halti, we always smile at each other warmly because we know we're used to getting hate for using them but we can see we are safe from judgement with each other! The halti was honestly a game changer for me, paired with these videos!

I’ve only ever seen one female dog hump and that female wasn’t desexed but had litters of puppies in the past. I have a intact male dog and occasionally I’ll have to correct humping, he seems to do it to desexed dominate high energy male dogs specifically and a occasional high energy play with certain dogs. It gets easier the more you give a warning then follow through with a correction but mostly dogs listen to the first warning once they know consequences
Joel, my un-neutered lab falls hopelessly "in love" with perhaps one dog every six weeks. I have to put him on the lead. Even then, as soon as I unleash him, he'll run back, at full gallop to where he saw "that" dog from a mile away. As though it's on heat. They are often males, neutered males. I read somewhere they might have urinary tract infections? One of his former boyfriends walks straight past him everyday now. We owners look at each other in amazement and laugh, what happened to my obsessive stalker of a sex beast? What did the other dog do to turn him off so much! We choose to see the funny-peculiar side of this behaviour, but it really is a pain in the backside and not pleasant for the owners or the victim of his ardour. I recognise it could be dangerous too.
It's disappointing to see that the PP proselytes will not only reject this kind of training, but will continue to pump out dogs that are more out of control than before their training because they reinforce unwanted behavior with rewards

Sie hat nichts anderes getan als exakt das, wofür er in seinen Videos ständig seinen eigenen Dobermann mißbraucht (was der Typ "Methode" nennt und wofür er sich selbst ständig feiert) - nämlich den anderen Hund, der ein bißchen "drüber" war, zu korrigieren, als er ihr zu sehr auf die Pelle rückt. Eigentlich hätte er selbst den schwarzen Hund, den er ja sogar selbst führt, korrigieren müssen, das wäre konsistent. Hätte dieser Hund sich dem Dobermann auf diese Art genähert, hätte er seinen Prinz direkt angestachelt, dem eine drüberzuziehen. Aber nichts, er reagiert überhaupt nicht auf das übergriffige Verhalten, auch seine Reaktion auf das Knurren kommt viel zu spät, er steht nur dumm rum und labert irgendwelchen Müll, der nur über seine Inkompetenz hinwegtäuschen soll. 30 Sekunden später zeigt sich das wieder - die Leine des schwarzen Hundes straff gespannt, aber keine Korrektur von ihm, nichts. In anderen Videos mit Kundenhunden hätte er schon lange angefangen, da brutale (und stets schlecht getimte) Leinenrucks en masse zu verteilen. 4:36 Prinz hängt sich in was rein, was ihn nichts angeht. Eigentlich hätte man ihn hier schon fortschicken müssen. Vom "Profi" mal wieder null Reaktion. Also übernimmt die weiße Hündin die Aufgabe, dem (leider ziemlich gestörten) Dobermann klarzumachen, daß er sich raushalten soll. Hier kommt dann auch endlich mal eine Reaktion vom "Profi", nur leider mal wieder eine völlig idiotische: "good job" gerichtet an den Dobermann. Wofür genau lobt er ihn also? Genau, für das, was er so richtig geil findet (der Tonfall ist bezeichnend) - Stunk provozieren. Und dieses Lob trifft den Dobermann auch noch genau in dem Moment, als er dem schwarzen Hund gegenüber so richtig übergriffig wird und ihm auf den Rücken klettert. Toller Profi.

Simple answer: don't use a head harness. It can cause really bad injurys on the dog's neck, especially when it is used without an extra leash on a normal collar (like it's shown in this and other videos of this animal abuser). If you lead your dog with only one lead point exclusively at the head harness, permanent tension on the leash can lead to the dog's head being crooked. This causes tension and can even cause damage to the joints and the entire musculoskeletal system of your dog in the long run.
In particular, jerky movements on the leash attached to the dog harness can cause enormous injuries to the dog's cervical spine. For example, if your dog suddenly jumps on the leash because it sees a cat or the archenemy, its head will be jerked to the side when it jumps forward quickly. In the worst case, this can even lead to a broken neck if the leash is run long.
Every single dog trainer in germany knows that, and if you go to a dog training with a head harness on your dog, you will have to listen to a long lecture, how dangerous a head harness is, and how it damages the communication between you and your dog. Then the trainer will show you better methods to communicate and to change the line of sight of your dog in a better way.
But this man here is not a good trainer (well, he has "worked" with wild animals like killer whales for 18 years - have you seen "Blackfish"? He must be cruel an abusive, otherwise you wouldn't do such a job for so many years.). His timing is always extremely bad, his methods are based only on dominance, violence and force, and his corrections, for example when he shows how to work with a leash, are so arbitrarily, that he becomes unpredictable for every dog (I've seen a video from him, in which the leashed dog tries to bite him after a few minutes of "training", because it doesn't know what's the sense of the "trainers" pointless tugging). For what he is doing with his Dobermann (abusing him to "correct" other dogs, what's just a paraphrase for beating them up) in Germany he would be sentenced for animal cruelty. It can be seen in every single video with this Dobermann that this dog is not happy, and that he almost fear this man. I wonder why nobody realized the manifestly body language of this dog (i think it's because i nearly don't understand what the "trainer" is babbling and concentrate more on what I'm seeing). For example watch his video "Learn how to raise dogs like Prince and Bosco" without sound, search my comment there an put it in the google translator.

@tazer7711 Yeah it’s difficult because someone in the house just had a major operation and needs constant care right now. All the howling isn’t helping. We don’t know what to do to reduce or get control at the least.

I have a 5 months old puppy and she essentially does this, trys to always get on top on her old brother (he doesn't like it) and any other dog that she meets she always looking to dominate or get top of them, is 5-6 months a good age Start corrections with a leash for this behavior? Its a flank touch not a butt touch. I have been watching the channel since the beginning but if I am wrong please correct in comment. Sometimes he refers to butt and flank interchangeably but they are different area's.

Have seen several videos of trainers saying leash introductions are not good for reactive dogs. Am so confused. Is it ok or not to let my reactive/overly excited dog meet other dogs on leash?
Hi! My female american akita (almost 2 years old) is EXACTLY like this, and I'm like that owner, I don't let her get close to any dog on walks, sadly is beacause we haven't met almost any well balanced dog like Prince so dogs react very bad to her, because she looks bad at them in a "jerky" way and she reacts back; and because people here are very soft with their dogs, so if I correct her like you do, to them is abusive. She has one dog friend, and she is like this to this dog too, we see him almost every day and every time she sees him, she jumps on him and growls, and even if I correct her every time, she keeps doing it. I still correct her and after 10-20 seconds she's good and we go on walks or they play at the dog park, but it is like she feels the need to "remind him" who is the boss.
Also she's the type that goes to the neck, not to hurt or latch to the dog, but other owners think she is agressive.
Other thing is, where we live people think that if a dog is on a muzzle is because they are deadly agressive, so they don't come close to you, and it is hard to introduce new dogs.
I hope you read this Joel, I want to know if this dog friends is enough, because she plays with him almost every day, or if we need to meet new dogs; she doesn't like other females and she's been in 2 fights with males because of her dominance (she is usually good with males). Her triggers are submissive dogs, running dogs, and reactive dogs, and if a dog wants to "challenge" her, she fights.
Other than that she is good 😩 haha

I know how you feel about other owners judging you! I've had people comment on just the fact my dog has a halti head collar on, to correcting him like Joel or even just doing a sit and stay while a dog passes by. It seems other people always have something to say about everything and it's annoying! Their dog barks and growls at mine? They pet their dog, reinforcing the damned behaviour! If I correct mine, I'm cruel and abusive 🙄
On the rare occasion I do pass another dog on a halti, we always smile at each other warmly because we know we're used to getting hate for using them but we can see we are safe from judgement with each other! The halti was honestly a game changer for me, paired with these videos!

I’ve only ever seen one female dog hump and that female wasn’t desexed but had litters of puppies in the past. I have a intact male dog and occasionally I’ll have to correct humping, he seems to do it to desexed dominate high energy male dogs specifically and a occasional high energy play with certain dogs. It gets easier the more you give a warning then follow through with a correction but mostly dogs listen to the first warning once they know consequences

Joel, my un-neutered lab falls hopelessly "in love" with perhaps one dog every six weeks.
I have to put him on the lead. Even then, as soon as I unleash him, he'll run back, at full gallop to where he saw "that" dog from a mile away. As though it's on heat.

One of his former boyfriends walks straight past him everyday now. We owners look at each other in amazement and laugh, what happened to my obsessive stalker of a sex beast? What did the other dog do to turn him off so much!
We choose to see the funny-peculiar side of this behaviour, but it really is a pain in the backside and not pleasant for the owners or the victim of his ardour. I recognise it could be dangerous too.
My dog is awful about this 😪 and she is a huge biter. It's sad really since she's a good dog she's just so wired up she wants to fight 🤦♀️

Warum soll bei 4:06 die weiße Hündin korrigiert werden? Sie hat nichts anderes getan als exakt das, wofür er in seinen Videos ständig seinen eigenen Dobermann mißbraucht (was der Typ "Methode" nennt und wofür er sich selbst ständig feiert) - nämlich den anderen Hund, der ein bißchen "drüber" war, zu korrigieren, als er ihr zu sehr auf die Pelle rückt. Eigentlich hätte er selbst den schwarzen Hund, den er ja sogar selbst führt, korrigieren müssen, das wäre konsistent. Hätte dieser Hund sich dem Dobermann auf diese Art genähert, hätte er seinen Prinz direkt angestachelt, dem eine drüberzuziehen. Aber nichts, er reagiert überhaupt nicht auf das übergriffige Verhalten, auch seine Reaktion auf das Knurren kommt viel zu spät, er steht nur dumm rum und labert irgendwelchen Müll, der nur über seine Inkompetenz hinwegtäuschen soll. 30 Sekunden später zeigt sich das wieder - die Leine des schwarzen Hundes straff gespannt, aber keine Korrektur von ihm, nichts. In anderen Videos mit Kundenhunden hätte er schon lange angefangen, da brutale (und stets schlecht getimte) Leinenrucks en masse zu verteilen.
4:36 Prinz hängt sich in was rein, was ihn nichts angeht. Eigentlich hätte man ihn hier schon fortschicken müssen. Vom "Profi" mal wieder null Reaktion. Also übernimmt die weiße Hündin die Aufgabe, dem (leider ziemlich gestörten) Dobermann klarzumachen, daß er sich raushalten soll. Hier kommt dann auch endlich mal eine Reaktion vom "Profi", nur leider mal wieder eine völlig idiotische: "good job" gerichtet an den Dobermann. Wofür genau lobt er ihn also? Genau, für das, was er so richtig geil findet (der Tonfall ist bezeichnend) - Stunk provozieren. Und dieses Lob trifft den Dobermann auch noch genau in dem Moment, als er dem schwarzen Hund gegenüber so richtig übergriffig wird und ihm auf den Rücken klettert. Toller Profi.
