Thank you Beckman for this channel. We rescued our BC mix when she was 4 moths old, broken tail and eye, malnourished, covered in ticks and fleas and kept in a cage with 6 other puppies. She was terrified of everything you can think of. I followed your channel step by step. She is 9 months now, and as you always say, it is time to get serious. But because we slowly followed your steps of leaving at the door, gently reminding not to leave us on the walk, we have an amazing dog already, she is still fearful but we followed your advices on fear and fear periods and she is doing really well at the moment, everyone comments what a lovely gentle dog she is. She is extremely clever and is a teenager now, but we set the good ground for her to blossom thanks to you. Looking forward to learning from you and thank you again
I like how you put importance on loose leash walking and then explain reactivity is a result of a tight leash and a dog not knowing what to do, where to go, the leash is tight so there’s no running away, and then bam, you get a nervous, scared, anxious or reactive dog. Loose leash really is the key to everything. For the dog to know, just walk with me, don’t leave me, don’t react.
i might not be the target audience, as I own a mini poodle :) but my dog is reactive. Before I got my dog I watched other dog trainers and was sure I will be always using Positive reinforcement etc. Some things worked with positive training but when i needed to fix leash walking and generally understand my dog's personality - these videos and Beckman's methods are the only ones that work for my dog. I now only watch other trainers for entertainment. I watch your videos for education and practical help. I live in Barcelona now and I wish I could bring my dog to get some sessions with you and Prince. So thankful for these videos for those of us who are far away.
His Rottweiler named Creed video is like the foundation video for loose leash walking and reactivity. And a dog walking tutorial from years ago that's awesome as well. Hope that helps as well.
Of course you are his target audience too. It's not about "can I handle the dog flipping out" because he's small or light enough for me to cope. Every dog should be trained well, and even a perfect big dog can attack if your mini poodle came along and tried to tell him who's boss. That's why I don't understand people with small dogs that don't care a bit about what their owner says. It's not only stressful for both dogs but also for the owner. So I wanted to say thank you for being a good example to 99% others with small dogs :)
@@lisap2405 thank you. Yes It’s absolutely for the safety of my dog and other dogs (even well trained ones). It helped me a lot when Beckman showed small dogs leash walking methods. And it’s the only one that worked for us. I tried at least 10 other methods before. My dog is not only reactive, he is bold, stubborn. He loves dogs and wants to play - but other dogs may not know it or get annoyed by him (he can be too much when playing). It’s every dog parents’ duty to train them. At least some basics - for safety.
I have a mini poodle mix though he is too old for training. He is 15 now and I wish I would've found Joel years ago! I can't help but to feel I failed him a little bit to live a doggo life to full potential. Even though he is spoiled to shit, just not in the right way
I have noticed when dogs are too intent it leads to pulling, which leads to aggression. Lack of socialization could be a key factor regardless of how dominant the dog is. In any case, I love these videos.

Wanted to thank you for your videos. Our 8 year old JRT mix is a sweet boy but on a leash he’s very reactive to dogs and sometimes people. The past few weeks I’ve been working with him at the door before going outside. When I saw your videos, it reinforced training inside before going outside. We got a gentle leader and the “cool” treat bag today. We worked with the leash indoors before going outside. He doesn’t love the gentle leader but it worked like a charm in that he wasn’t darting away. We worked outside the house for a bit before going in the walk. We passed a few people, saw a dog further out and passed by a house with barking dogs. He wanted to react but didn’t. It’s not magically cured but his energy was so much better. I am really proud of him. Probably passing by another dog he’ll freak out but we feel better prepared to work on it with him. Funny thing, in a dog park off leash he is supper sweet with everyone and other dogs. We’ll keep watching your videos and working with him. Thank you, again!
My neighbors found a stray Doberman and I got to help them---what beautiful, elegant graceful creatures!! I said I kind of wanted him (not realistic cuz I already hv 3 big dogs🤪🐾❤️) because of my fave dog trainer, Joel Beckman...and they love you, too!! That pupper is in good hands🐾❤️
Make sure to look at Joel's video on training dogs at different ages. The intensity of training is a gradual process, and these are adult dogs. Puppies have different needs.
So.. I have a 3 year old boxer mix rescue. She is sometimes reactive at random points to random dogs. I think she plays too intense for some dogs and when they try to set a boundary she perceives it as a fight. My big problem is she’s strong as hell and easily dominates most dogs. I’ve been working very diligently with her on discipline, recall and calming her down. I’m having a little success day by day. Thank you.

I worked with amazing dogs for years when I worked at a shelter then the last 5 years I transitioned to being in the veterinary med side of animal care. I love ur content as I’ve met many dogs beyond treats on the verge of euthanasia. I’ve treated wolves on sanctuaries but on the other hand- owners who adopted a “dog” from a wolf sanctuary. Would love to see you or someone else address Zaks recent video on positive only.

While I completely understand the importance to a loose leash, the tight leash is an owner's natural response to dogs who've resorted using their teeth in the past. If you are worried, tightness gives the control to pull the dog away in a moments notice. Thats why owner's resort to it. I think its important to understand that the statememt above is just a point of view from frustrated people. Joel, thanks for your explanation and expertise on how to conduct the meetings.
Amazing dog trainer and psychologist. Everyone wanting a pet dog should watch his videos and learn about how to behave and ensure a nice and playful experience, no stress going out on a walk.
Not just a pet dog, even a competition dog as he uses tools that are allowed at dog shows and not outlawed in so many countries. Even if he does use a tool, like the gentle leader, most of his videos show you how to fade them out, so you can walk into the ring on a regular collar and a very loose leash. Hope that helps.
Your videos are very helpful. Nonetheless I wanted to ask whether you can show us exactly this stuff with a dog that's got aggression/reaction towards other dogs because the dog itself is unsure. Those corrections you gave would be way too much for a dog like ours and I'd like to see what you'd do with a dog like this. Hope my english is not too bad 😅
My problem is I have 2 small dogs who are excited to meet the 'new' dog (whilst on our walk) - and one of them is a 2 yr old male schnoodle - who gets super excited and I never know when he will do a 'growl' greet or just be chill. My 2nd dog (a cavoodle) is currently using a Halti - as she pulls a lot.

I became a dog coach purely from my experience and love for soccer/football. I’m not a “Karen” at all (hahahaha), in fact I only service medium to large dogs because of the physicality I learned while playing and coaching soccer. Did you know that you are teaching in the same way we teach on the soccer fields? We teach knee up all the time, red & yellow cards for discipline and how to play fair. We referee the coming together of humans in this sport and it’s with rules for proper behaviour. Every time you mention the “positive enforcement “ peeps I shudder because they are only doing 50% of the job imo. You don’t send in a “nice” player to cover the zone of an “intense” player. You match up strength, trainer/owner to dog, and teach them how to play the game fair. For example, you say “HEY!” That is exactly what a coach would do to teach us. Now being the coach I get to train dogs with exercise and play. I’m unique because I’m a tough chick, but happily married and running with the big dogs. What does this have to do with you… I found your channel taught me the in’s and out of reading dog body language and the required physicalness to correct behaviours. I’ve watched almost your entire channel adapting your knowledge to my doggy drills and exercise courses I do for dogs. As I watched your video’s I noticed you have sound issues. I know that you’ve tried the lapel, I noticed your video’s have gotten better, I noticed you upgraded your camera and you’ve always acknowledged if there were sound issues. So many times I had to put the volume up or volume down, or there was distortion etc. At least I’ve watched most of your video’s to know that you need a sound producer that has knowledge of the Beckman’s Dog Training world. Even your visits to the dog store were incredibly low, not of the quality you need to be. I’m not a sound magician, I can’t make the planes stop flying over you when you’re recording, but I can normalize and adjust levels so your audience can at least hear you, or read the captions we can place when there is loud noise interference. If you have read to this point I have your attention, and if you are considering a role for a sound producer, please test me and send me a video to correct. Also, I have an idea to use your sayings, “I’ll do this all day” right after your intro, and put in princes and bosco’s barks. And we can keep changing the sayings so it’s funny and fresh. So glad I found your channel Joel. My husband and I have had many dogs over our 45 years of marriage. The vast majority shelter adoptions, and have not has problems we felt unable to handle until now. Last July we adopted a 4 year old medium sized female mixed breed. She has gotten into 2 fights with my sisters 4 year old female Golden Retreiver. Twice given it's taken time to learn our dog is an escape artist. But that's a story in itself. With me on walks she does well with a loose leash. No reactivity with other dogs. We are thinking the problem with our sisters dog is a people resource guarding situation. You've touched on this a bit in other vids but I sure would appreciate more guidance on how to get to where my dog and my sisters dog can get along. Especially as my sister and I have a long history of taking care of each others dogs when we need to be away from home. Is this something you can address/expand on more or am I going to need to find a trainer like you in the Denver area? Fingers Crossed. And thanks again for sharing your knowledge and methods.
He has helped me with my 2 male Dobermans. I use a Hound of the Baskervilles muzzle, which I conditioned over a week's time before ever even clipping it on them. Individually practice of course - smear with liverwurst, cream cheese, get them to stick their nose in it for a treat, etc. Twice a day for a week before even attempting to clip it on. My boys now love their muzzles and never try to fight them or get them off. I also never made them feel bad about wearing one - such handsome dudes! We can now be in the same room without muzzles for the whole night ( I insist they must be calm and in their own spots or beds), and up to 15 minutes outside without them on. But again, progress at the dogs' paces. Like outside we started with muzzles on for 1 minute, working our way up to longer. Ping ponging the times so it's not always more, sometimes going back to one minute, etc. I have always worked everything first with the first dog in the house. So whosever house it is, they get the leash put on first, muzzle put on first, go out first, etc. Good things happen when they're together. Try not to let them rehearse bad behavior, as it tends to set them back a lot. Susan Garrett has an awesome video on a dog's TEMP - that helped tuning in to each dog's body language. I'm an obedience instructor, and it was even difficult for me to see the younger, less confident, more growly Dobe's cues or triggers as they were so subtle. Also, both of you should keep a journal as far as when things happen, what time, what was going on, locations, toys, food, or people around, etc. You have to stay on them too. Can't let your guard down. Also taught a look away cue so you can break that stare. If one of them stops breathing, get on it- something is about to happen - prevent it. If any aggression is recent, check out Dr Jean Dodds and get a full thyroid panel done. If anything bad does happen, it's a general knock it off or that's enough (pronounced E-nuff). Try not to use people names or dog names as it tends to create jealousy. Hope that helps.
Love your videos! I have 5 lbs and 14 yo dogs. Would you do video on introduce small old dogs to bigger dogs / younger dogs too. Some dogs at the dog park have so much energies and some even charged people, that made me hesitate taking my dog meeting younger/bigger dogs.
I started volunteering at a Doberman rescue and I’m hoping to be able to help some of the reactive dogs we have. Is there a good way to see the difference between fear reactive and territorial/ dominant? One of the male agressive boys is not yet neutered so maybe that can help him!
How should I adjust this technique to a dog who barks for England (alert barking that becomes more panicked the closer the dog gets), no agression, just scared of the other dog and really doesn't want to meet the other dog? On the 3 or 4 times we have managed to get calmly close to another dog there is total avoidance of my dog of the other dog. No eye contact, no sniffing, totally ignores his (which I don't mind but gives you an idea of his state of mind). Im happy for him not to interact with other dogs, but I need him to ignore the other dog from the beginning rather than react at huge distances (100 metres plus). Thanks for any advice Joel.
This is My gray area with My dog, cause he is socialized, he knows how to interact with dogs off leash, but on leash, he pulls, he cries very loudly when he sees another dog, if crying doesn't work, he barks to get me to get him closer to the dog. It's like he looses all sense of socialization on leash and I struggle to control him hahaha
Question. I have a French mastiff I follow your loose lead guide and he walks fine loose Leash he is socialised with dogs and plays off lead with other dogs. But when on lead will pull to meet them how do I address this he is 11 months old and get stronger by the day. Great content and such helpful advice on a balanced approach to dog training. I really appreciate this channel, thank you for educating the world! In the video with the bull terrier, how would you explain the body language? Was there any kind of visible warning sign displayed that stood out prior to the biting?
I have had many dogs in my life, most recently a pair of Basenji's I rescued, and always made sure that any dogs in my household knew that we the pack leaders and that seemed to work, but I have more of a question. I had a terrible fear of German shepherds due to an attack when I was young by a pair of undisciplined dogs that had me treed for over 2 hours until the owner came home and dragged them away. I made my peace with my fear of shepherds years later after I won over slowly. He was a guard dog on a heavy equipment lot where I worked named Blitzkrieg. A lot of noise but no real aggression I found that when I felt nervous, at first, that sunglasses hiding the fear in my eyes helped. Do you think this was a valid thought process? It helped relieve my tension which I felt pretty sure not only helped my fear but didn't send him any signals to set him off. He and I became great pals. I was allowed to take him off-site and he turned out to be a great dog. I just always wondered if hiding my obvious fear in my eyes initially helped us both. What's your take? BTW, I just found your videos and you have great insight and ability to read the dogs body language, which I think is vitally important.
NO matter what ya think you hafta make the Pup fear or respect you more then anything else. How? Get some welding gloves. Once he realizes his bite does not hurt you his brain will go into another mode. DO NOT HURT HIM or HER. Pick em up place em into a shower and let it run over them for abt 2- minutes. Pick em up and place em in front of you. Look at them face to face with your eyes into his/her. Just for a second or two. Done deal. After treat em with all the love and compassion you have. Best friend forever.
What kind of dog is the “reactive” dog in this video? I have a dog that looks EXACTLY like him. He acts exactly like him as well. We are having the same behavioral issues. Our dog has escalated to fighting with our other 2 dogs. This is such great advice that we will use. Thank you!
Great video Joel. I have 2 leash reactive Bull Terriers and would love to see a video of working with that breed since they can be a little goofy, stubborn and come on strong with their heads over other dogs when they play(it's confusing! is it play or dominance?).
I know it's not quite the same, but he does have a video of two sibling American Bulldogs that's very helpful, especially since their energies feed off each other when they're together. Hope that helps.
How long should I have to wait before I introduce my new rescue dog to my existing dog? Rescue is a female Rottweiler mix almost 3 yr (55 lbs) who is great with people but was attacked in the summer, sent to vet with bite to thigh. She is showing aggression on leash to other dogs. My dog is male unneutered 63 lb english choc lab ( almost 13 yrs) that has never showed aggression or protection of the property. He is very playful and still asks like a puppy. I’ve had her for 4 days. Keeping them in sep rooms for now. Haven’t seen each other in house. Once up the driveway,passing each other on leashes. My dog wined walking by her. Rescue dog barked and pulled until he passed. Then took several minutes to calm down
I'm new to this channel but I have a Newfoundland who has been with me his entire life. Recently, out of nowhere as far as I can tell, he has started growling when I pet anywhere below his head. He doesn't run away and his tail continues to wag but he has an incredibly intimidating growl. Any thoughts or suggestions?
You said "his entire life" so I'm assuming he's older? Have you been to the vet to rule out pain. I'm thinking about arthritis. There are a number of different treatments for that. For my dog, Adequan worked best, but it's expensive, I'd try other things first.
@@gaileverett Maybe I should have phrased it differently. He's 4 and doesn't have any injuries that I know of. Perhaps I will schedule and appointment just to get him checked out but from what I've seen, he has no problem with visitors petting his back.

Ive been doing a combo of his training plus reward based basicly if my dog is doing good I will take and give a treat, if shes reactive I correct until she calms down enough then I get her to do things once she is I Basicly show her seeing a dog means wait for a command
I would because an overly excited dog could trigger a poor reaction from another dog. It’s like Joel said in this video, set them up for success by tamping down the excitement.
@@BDTraining got a question for you, how would you stop reacitivity that results in, play bowing, grolwing if the other dog is growling, tail wag all while having raised hair and being unable to be distracted or stopped before hand like my dog just won't focus your method helped alot but nothing seems to actualy be fixing her reactivity got her to br able to walk past dogs across the street but the moment a dog moves rather then being a statue or a dog is moving period she things shits going to hit the fan, for context she was attacked so many times I cant count. Anymore by a neighbors dog who's constantly off leash ever since I got her at 4 months she otherwise is a perfect sog and has corected males for humping even! I just cant fogure out what her deal was she was none reactive when I got her she walked by just fine pulled to the dog park but that has almost completely stopped for the most part, she just cant get over dogs for some reason and I'm not sure why, I dont have access to people who are willing to do duel training sessions together where in a controlled environment we work with our dogs walking vet around ext training using both of our dogs I might soon but my dog bloody bit off her own toenail so...I got to wait shes 1 year and 2 months now and I'm looking at 1 year 3 months to resume training at the moment unless I bandage up her toe and take her out in hopes she doesnt tear it up she constantly hurts her feet idk why
Would you please do a video about muzzles? I have a beagle and when I put one on him, he gets it off every time. (We put it on him when he would be around other dogs bc he tries to bite them) I got tired of him busting out of it, so I modified it by sewing a lot of reinforcements around the sniffer so it was harder for him to get his snout out of it. I called it the FRIENDSHIP HELMET because there was so much sewn all around it (a couple of eye holes). The friendship helmet worked so much better than a regular muzzle, but he still got out of it. It just took 10 x longer. I would like to see what brand you use and how you keep them from getting it off. TY.

Joel does have a video on conditioning the muzzle too. Try not to allow them to take it off. It may take longer since the dog now knows he can get it off. I would distract when he tries to fight it, like jolly him up - Oh my goodness, let's go over here and sniff this or check this scenery out, etc. You might also be successful with scatter feeding which allows a Beagle to use their nose, provided he's not a resource guarder. Hope that helps.
Joel, I have a nitty-gritty question, but maybe you have some experience with this: In your experience, are there any particular behaviors associated with a (male) dog being neutered too young?
@@BDTraining Thanks - I'm looking forward to that video. Context: I bought my dog off a woman who got him from a puppy mill. When I Googled the breeder on his paperwork, I found horror stories about the breeder and her sons basically castrating puppies without anasthesia (and they are still in business and selling dogs online!!!). I have no idea when my guy was neutered, but it was already done by the time I got him at 5 months old. And I'm wondering if some of the persistent anxiety I'm seeing in him is due not just to a lack of socialization, but also the careless/premature neutering...
Do you think that there is an age limit to wear reactive dogs can meet, play with other dogs? I have a rescued Rottweiler now almost 5 years old. I can walk him to where as long as no dog barks at him, he will walk by no problem. But he just can not ignore barking dogs even if they are not barking at him. I live in Germany or I would have been to see you a long time ago. I just can't find anyone in my area who works as you do. It is so frustrating. Thank you for your videos
Can you please give me some advice on my 4yr old female staffy. She's normally a golden dog, I can walk with her off the leash and she will see other dogs/cats and will not react. However when she's on the leash it's a different story, she walks by my side on the leash very well but when she sees another dog/cat she pulls and shows aggression. When I see enother dog I don't react, I don't tighten the leash, I just simply watch her and wait to see if she reacts. I correct her everytime by saying "HEY" tap her bottom and get her to sit for a little. I'm very Persistent and I'm incredibly determined to get her to be better and to stop this aggression on the lead. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong and why she only seems to show aggression on the lead.
We have a male dog and he is a french bulldog. he doesn’t like male dogs at all but some he likes. we can’t let him off lead because he doesn’t listen to recall. and he freezes at other dogs
Are there any videos on reactive dogs in truck while driving. I would love to learn how to stop that, I have 2 german shepards that I have to take with me at the same time sometimes, and it's rough, they bark and react to other drivers in cars. It's way worse when they are together.
I have a labradane that I just adopted i was told she lived with another dog and the other dog began to start fights and so this dog learned aggression but she's very gentle with submissive/friendly dogs & cats/kittens. It's just she's very reactive to dominant dogs i was told that she is very protective and will do what has to be done to protect her "person"... she doesn't like men... im trying to do exposure therapy by walking in public with a muzzle is this the wrong approach? She seems to be peaceful when I'm next to her but with men she loses the ability to hear me. And with most dogs (with the exception of a few) she snarls If they get within her walking sphere. I've corrected it everytime it happens and when I can get her attention she kind of stops but you can tell she's stressed because she pants and her eyes get stressed
Do u have any videos or advice on a rescue hoarded dog? She in not aggressive toward people or dogs or cats..just the opposite she freezes in fear. She has no confidence. Jumps and bolts at any noise..or sometimes at nothing. She seems to want to be near me after a month but still stays just out of reach. I can get to her and pet her but only on very slow careful approach..and she doesn't seem to want me there. But again seems to look at me wanting affection..she just never learned how. She does check in with me but I can get her to listen. Basic Training commands are hard because she is not food or play/attention driven . Help😭
I'f my dog gets reactive towards putting on his gentle lead like jumping and nipping what's a good way to get rid of that behavior he hates getting his leash on
Hey Joel, my 14mo Harrier is super socialised and plays with plenty of other dogs at dog parks etc. I’ve noticed she’s started growling a little bit while playing, she’s still playing the same, but do I need to be concerned with the growling 🤔
@@blueflare3848 now that she’s 17-18 months she doesn’t even want to play with other dogs anymore 🤦🏾♂️ She prefers chasing balls etc now 🤷🏽♂️ that growling thing was very off putting to other dog owners though, that was the problem 👍🏾

Thank you Beckman for this channel. We rescued our BC mix when she was 4 moths old, broken tail and eye, malnourished, covered in ticks and fleas and kept in a cage with 6 other puppies. She was terrified of everything you can think of. I followed your channel step by step. She is 9 months now, and as you always say, it is time to get serious. But because we slowly followed your steps of leaving at the door, gently reminding not to leave us on the walk, we have an amazing dog already, she is still fearful but we followed your advices on fear and fear periods and she is doing really well at the moment, everyone comments what a lovely gentle dog she is. She is extremely clever and is a teenager now, but we set the good ground for her to blossom thanks to you. Looking forward to learning from you and thank you again

I like how you put importance on loose leash walking and then explain reactivity is a result of a tight leash and a dog not knowing what to do, where to go, the leash is tight so there’s no running away, and then bam, you get a nervous, scared, anxious or reactive dog. Loose leash really is the key to everything. For the dog to know, just walk with me, don’t leave me, don’t react.
i might not be the target audience, as I own a mini poodle :) but my dog is reactive. Before I got my dog I watched other dog trainers and was sure I will be always using Positive reinforcement etc. Some things worked with positive training but when i needed to fix leash walking and generally understand my dog's personality - these videos and Beckman's methods are the only ones that work for my dog. I now only watch other trainers for entertainment. I watch your videos for education and practical help. I live in Barcelona now and I wish I could bring my dog to get some sessions with you and Prince. So thankful for these videos for those of us who are far away.
His Rottweiler named Creed video is like the foundation video for loose leash walking and reactivity. And a dog walking tutorial from years ago that's awesome as well. Hope that helps as well.

Of course you are his target audience too. It's not about "can I handle the dog flipping out" because he's small or light enough for me to cope. Every dog should be trained well, and even a perfect big dog can attack if your mini poodle came along and tried to tell him who's boss. That's why I don't understand people with small dogs that don't care a bit about what their owner says. It's not only stressful for both dogs but also for the owner. So I wanted to say thank you for being a good example to 99% others with small dogs :)
@@lisap2405 thank you. Yes It’s absolutely for the safety of my dog and other dogs (even well trained ones). It helped me a lot when Beckman showed small dogs leash walking methods. And it’s the only one that worked for us. I tried at least 10 other methods before. My dog is not only reactive, he is bold, stubborn. He loves dogs and wants to play - but other dogs may not know it or get annoyed by him (he can be too much when playing). It’s every dog parents’ duty to train them. At least some basics - for safety.
I have a mini poodle mix though he is too old for training. He is 15 now and I wish I would've found Joel years ago! I can't help but to feel I failed him a little bit to live a doggo life to full potential. Even though he is spoiled to shit, just not in the right way

I have noticed when dogs are too intent it leads to pulling, which leads to aggression. Lack of socialization could be a key factor regardless of how dominant the dog is. In any case, I love these videos.

Wanted to thank you for your videos. Our 8 year old JRT mix is a sweet boy but on a leash he’s very reactive to dogs and sometimes people. The past few weeks I’ve been working with him at the door before going outside. When I saw your videos, it reinforced training inside before going outside. We got a gentle leader and the “cool” treat bag today. We worked with the leash indoors before going outside. He doesn’t love the gentle leader but it worked like a charm in that he wasn’t darting away. We worked outside the house for a bit before going in the walk. We passed a few people, saw a dog further out and passed by a house with barking dogs. He wanted to react but didn’t. It’s not magically cured but his energy was so much better. I am really proud of him. Probably passing by another dog he’ll freak out but we feel better prepared to work on it with him. Funny thing, in a dog park off leash he is supper sweet with everyone and other dogs. We’ll keep watching your videos and working with him. Thank you, again!
My neighbors found a stray Doberman and I got to help them---what beautiful, elegant graceful creatures!! I said I kind of wanted him (not realistic cuz I already hv 3 big dogs🤪🐾❤️) because of my fave dog trainer, Joel Beckman...and they love you, too!! That pupper is in good hands🐾❤️

Make sure to look at Joel's video on training dogs at different ages. The intensity of training is a gradual process, and these are adult dogs. Puppies have different needs.

So.. I have a 3 year old boxer mix rescue. She is sometimes reactive at random points to random dogs. I think she plays too intense for some dogs and when they try to set a boundary she perceives it as a fight. My big problem is she’s strong as hell and easily dominates most dogs.
I’ve been working very diligently with her on discipline, recall and calming her down. I’m having a little success day by day. Thank you.

I worked with amazing dogs for years when I worked at a shelter then the last 5 years I transitioned to being in the veterinary med side of animal care. I love ur content as I’ve met many dogs beyond treats on the verge of euthanasia. I’ve treated wolves on sanctuaries but on the other hand- owners who adopted a “dog” from a wolf sanctuary. While I completely understand the importance to a loose leash, the tight leash is an owner's natural response to dogs who've resorted using their teeth in the past. If you are worried, tightness gives the control to pull the dog away in a moments notice. Thats why owner's resort to it. I think its important to understand that the statememt above is just a point of view from frustrated people. Joel, thanks for your explanation and expertise on how to conduct the meetings.

Everyone wanting a pet dog should watch his videos and learn about how to behave and ensure a nice and playful experience, no stress going out on a walk.
Not just a pet dog, even a competition dog as he uses tools that are allowed at dog shows and not outlawed in so many countries. Even if he does use a tool, like the gentle leader, most of his videos show you how to fade them out, so you can walk into the ring on a regular collar and a very loose leash. Hope that helps.

Your videos are very helpful. Nonetheless I wanted to ask whether you can show us exactly this stuff with a dog that's got aggression/reaction towards other dogs because the dog itself is unsure. Those corrections you gave would be way too much for a dog like ours and I'd like to see what you'd do with a dog like this. Hope my english is not too bad 😅
My problem is I have 2 small dogs who are excited to meet the 'new' dog (whilst on our walk) - and one of them is a 2 yr old male schnoodle - who gets super excited and I never know when he will do a 'growl' greet or just be chill. My 2nd dog (a cavoodle) is currently using a Halti - as she pulls a lot.

My name is Crystal Favel and I live in Canada on the Pacific North West Coast in Squamish, B.C. I became a dog coach purely from my experience and love for soccer/football. I’m not a “Karen” at all (hahahaha), in fact I only service medium to large dogs because of the physicality I learned while playing and coaching soccer. I have coached children age 5 and up to European men age groups how to reach their potential, then it dawned upon me, I could use my coaching and agility skills for dogs. Did you know that you are teaching in the same way we teach on the soccer fields? We teach knee up all the time, red & yellow cards for discipline and how to play fair. We referee the coming together of humans in this sport and it’s with rules for proper behaviour. Every time you mention the “positive enforcement “ peeps I shudder because they are only doing 50% of the job imo.
You don’t send in a “nice” player to cover the zone of an “intense” player. You match up strength, trainer/owner to dog, and teach them how to play the game fair. For example, you say “HEY!” That is exactly what a coach would do to teach us. Now being the coach I get to train dogs with exercise and play. I’m unique because I’m a tough chick, but happily married and running with the big dogs. I have nothing to prove it’s all a passion from the inside out. I’m not affiliated with anyone, I’m there for the dogs. I’m not afraid, I’m intrigued. Let’s get Ruff!
What does this have to do with you…
I found your channel taught me the in’s and out of reading dog body language and the required physicalness to correct behaviours. I’ve watched almost your entire channel adapting your knowledge to my doggy drills and exercise courses I do for dogs.
As I watched your video’s I noticed you have sound issues. I know that you’ve tried the lapel, I noticed your video’s have gotten better, I noticed you upgraded your camera and you’ve always acknowledged if there were sound issues. So many times I had to put the volume up or volume down, or there was distortion etc. At least I’ve watched most of your video’s to know that you need a sound producer that has knowledge of the Beckman’s Dog Training world. Even your visits to the dog store were incredibly low, not of the quality you need to be.
Before I became a Dog Coach, I used to own a multimedia company as a performing artist and did all my own sound. I have earned awards for best audio work in Canada as an Indigenous woman. I truly believe in your style of dog training, I’m doing it right now. I believe in your team so much, I could help you with your sound so your messages and teachings would be more consistent. Your family who does your video now is doing a great job. My job would be to fix audio issues, levels and enhance the sound that is already there. Maybe work on your archives and work on the sound issues you already posted, totally up to you! Plus I do have a few sound ideas for your intro.
I can’t tell you how many times I hear “HEY!’ And it distorts the sounds loudly in my ears as I watch. Wouldn’t it be great just to mute the yell and put the word “HEY!”instead to save your listener’s ears. I’m not a sound magician, I can’t make the planes stop flying over you when you’re recording, but I can normalize and adjust levels so your audience can at least hear you, or read the captions we can place when there is loud noise interference.
If you have read to this point I have your attention, and if you are considering a role for a sound producer, please test me and send me a video to correct. Also, I have an idea to use your sayings, “I’ll do this all day” right after your intro, and put in princes and bosco’s barks. And we can keep changing the sayings so it’s funny and fresh. That’ll help sell your t-shirts, if you’re planning on merch.
I’m just so inspired by what you do and your no-nonsence approach, it’s who I am as a coach and a person. Let’s work together and improve your sound so we can hear and read everything you say.

So glad I found your channel Joel. My husband and I have had many dogs over our 45 years of marriage. The vast majority shelter adoptions, and have not has problems we felt unable to handle until now.
Last July we adopted a 4 year old medium sized female mixed breed. She has gotten into 2 fights with my sisters 4 year old female Golden Retreiver. Twice given it's taken time to learn our dog is an escape artist. But that's a story in itself.
With me on walks she does well with a loose leash. No reactivity with other dogs. We are thinking the problem with our sisters dog is a people resource guarding situation.
You've touched on this a bit in other vids but I sure would appreciate more guidance on how to get to where my dog and my sisters dog can get along. Especially as my sister and I have a long history of taking care of each others dogs when we need to be away from home.
Is this something you can address/expand on more or am I going to need to find a trainer like you in the Denver area? Fingers Crossed. And thanks again for sharing your knowledge and methods.
He has helped me with my 2 male Dobermans. I use a Hound of the Baskervilles muzzle, which I conditioned over a week's time before ever even clipping it on them. Individually practice of course - smear with liverwurst, cream cheese, get them to stick their nose in it for a treat, etc. Twice a day for a week before even attempting to clip it on. My boys now love their muzzles and never try to fight them or get them off. I also never made them feel bad about wearing one - such handsome dudes! We can now be in the same room without muzzles for the whole night ( I insist they must be calm and in their own spots or beds), and up to 15 minutes outside without them on. But again, progress at the dogs' paces. Like outside we started with muzzles on for 1 minute, working our way up to longer. Ping ponging the times so it's not always more, sometimes going back to one minute, etc. I have always worked everything first with the first dog in the house. So whosever house it is, they get the leash put on first, muzzle put on first, go out first, etc. Good things happen when they're together. Try not to let them rehearse bad behavior, as it tends to set them back a lot. Susan Garrett has an awesome video on a dog's TEMP - that helped tuning in to each dog's body language. I'm an obedience instructor, and it was even difficult for me to see the younger, less confident, more growly Dobe's cues or triggers as they were so subtle. Also, both of you should keep a journal as far as when things happen, what time, what was going on, locations, toys, food, or people around, etc. You have to stay on them too. Can't let your guard down. Also taught a look away cue so you can break that stare. If one of them stops breathing, get on it- something is about to happen - prevent it. If any aggression is recent, check out Dr Jean Dodds and get a full thyroid panel done. If anything bad does happen, it's a general knock it off or that's enough (pronounced E-nuff). Try not to use people names or dog names as it tends to create jealousy. Hope that helps.

Love your videos! I have 5 lbs and 14 yo dogs. Would you do video on introduce small old dogs to bigger dogs / younger dogs too. Some dogs at the dog park have so much energies and some even charged people, that made me hesitate taking my dog meeting younger/bigger dogs.

How should I adjust this technique to a dog who barks for England (alert barking that becomes more panicked the closer the dog gets), no agression, just scared of the other dog and really doesn't want to meet the other dog? On the 3 or 4 times we have managed to get calmly close to another dog there is total avoidance of my dog of the other dog. No eye contact, no sniffing, totally ignores his (which I don't mind but gives you an idea of his state of mind). Im happy for him not to interact with other dogs, but I need him to ignore the other dog from the beginning rather than react at huge distances (100 metres plus). Thanks for any advice Joel.

This is My gray area with My dog, cause he is socialized, he knows how to interact with dogs off leash, but on leash, he pulls, he cries very loudly when he sees another dog, if crying doesn't work, he barks to get me to get him closer to the dog.
It's like he looses all sense of socialization on leash and I struggle to control him hahaha
Question. I have a French mastiff I follow your loose lead guide and he walks fine loose Leash he is socialised with dogs and plays off lead with other dogs. But when on lead will pull to meet them how do I address this he is 11 months old and get stronger by the day. Great content and such helpful advice on a balanced approach to dog training. My dog can be reactive on lead. The worst is when both dogs are on leash and the get tangled. I now refuse to meet other dogs when both are on leash.

Making better dog owners with every video
I have had many dogs in my life, most recently a pair of Basenji's I rescued, and always made sure that any dogs in my household knew that we the pack leaders and that seemed to work, but I have more of a question.
I had a terrible fear of German shepherds due to an attack when I was young by a pair of undisciplined dogs that had me treed for over 2 hours until the owner came home and dragged them away. I made my peace with my fear of shepherds years later after I won over slowly. He was a guard dog on a heavy equipment lot where I worked named Blitzkrieg. A lot of noise but no real aggression I found that when I felt nervous, at first, that sunglasses hiding the fear in my eyes helped.
Do you think this was a valid thought process? It helped relieve my tension which I felt pretty sure not only helped my fear but didn't send him any signals to set him off. He and I became great pals. I was allowed to take him off-site and he turned out to be a great dog. I just always wondered if hiding my obvious fear in my eyes initially helped us both. What's your take? BTW, I just found your videos and you have great insight and ability to read the dogs body language, which I think is vitally important.
NO matter what ya think you hafta make the Pup fear or respect you more then anything else. How? Get some welding gloves. Once he realizes his bite does not hurt you his brain
will go into another mode. DO NOT HURT HIM or HER. Pick em up place em into a shower and let it run over them for abt 2- minutes. Pick em up and place em in front of you. Look at them face to face with your eyes into his/her. Just for a second or two. Done deal. After treat em with all the love and compassion you have. Best friend forever.
What kind of dog is the “reactive” dog in this video? I have a dog that looks EXACTLY like him. He acts exactly like him as well. We are having the same behavioral issues. Our dog has escalated to fighting with our other 2 dogs. This is such great advice that we will use. Thank you!
Great video Joel. I have 2 leash reactive Bull Terriers and would love to see a video of working with that breed since they can be a little goofy, stubborn and come on strong with their heads over other dogs when they play(it's confusing! is it play or dominance?).
I know it's not quite the same, but he does have a video of two sibling American Bulldogs that's very helpful, especially since their energies feed off each other when they're together. Hope that helps.
How long should I have to wait before I introduce my new rescue dog to my existing dog? Rescue is a female Rottweiler mix almost 3 yr (55 lbs) who is great with people but was attacked in the summer, sent to vet with bite to thigh. She is showing aggression on leash to other dogs. My dog is male unneutered 63 lb english choc lab ( almost 13 yrs) that has never showed aggression or protection of the property. He is very playful and still asks like a puppy. I’ve had her for 4 days. Keeping them in sep rooms for now. Haven’t seen each other in house. Once up the driveway,passing each other on leashes. My dog wined walking by her. Rescue dog barked and pulled until he passed. Then took several minutes to calm down

I'm new to this channel but I have a Newfoundland who has been with me his entire life. Recently, out of nowhere as far as I can tell, he has started growling when I pet anywhere below his head. He doesn't run away and his tail continues to wag but he has an incredibly intimidating growl. Any thoughts or suggestions?
You said "his entire life" so I'm assuming he's older? Have you been to the vet to rule out pain. I'm thinking about arthritis. There are a number of different treatments for that. For my dog, Adequan worked best, but it's expensive, I'd try other things first.
@@gaileverett Maybe I should have phrased it differently. He's 4 and doesn't have any injuries that I know of. Perhaps I will schedule and appointment just to get him checked out but from what I've seen, he has no problem with visitors petting his back.

Ive been doing a combo of his training plus reward based basicly if my dog is doing good I will take and give a treat, if shes reactive I correct until she calms down enough then I get her to do things once she is I Basicly show her seeing a dog means wait for a command
I would because an overly excited dog could trigger a poor reaction from another dog. It’s like Joel said in this video, set them up for success by tamping down the excitement.
I’d do it similar while being a bit more patient because the motivations are “good” in comparison to “bad”.
@@BDTraining got a question for you, how would you stop reacitivity that results in, play bowing, grolwing if the other dog is growling, tail wag all while having raised hair and being unable to be distracted or stopped before hand like my dog just won't focus your method helped alot but nothing seems to actualy be fixing her reactivity got her to br able to walk past dogs across the street but the moment a dog moves rather then being a statue or a dog is moving period she things shits going to hit the fan, for context she was attacked so many times I cant count. Anymore by a neighbors dog who's constantly off leash ever since I got her at 4 months she otherwise is a perfect sog and has corected males for humping even! I just cant fogure out what her deal was she was none reactive when I got her she walked by just fine pulled to the dog park but that has almost completely stopped for the most part, she just cant get over dogs for some reason and I'm not sure why, I dont have access to people who are willing to do duel training sessions together where in a controlled environment we work with our dogs walking vet around ext training using both of our dogs I might soon but my dog bloody bit off her own toenail so...I got to wait shes 1 year and 2 months now and I'm looking at 1 year 3 months to resume training at the moment unless I bandage up her toe and take her out in hopes she doesnt tear it up she constantly hurts her feet idk why

Would you please do a video about muzzles? I have a beagle and when I put one on him, he gets it off every time. (We put it on him when he would be around other dogs bc he tries to bite them) I got tired of him busting out of it, so I modified it by sewing a lot of reinforcements around the sniffer so it was harder for him to get his snout out of it. I called it the FRIENDSHIP HELMET because there was so much sewn all around it (a couple of eye holes). The friendship helmet worked so much better than a regular muzzle, but he still got out of it. It just took 10 x longer. I would like to see what brand you use and how you keep them from getting it off. TY.
I use a Hound of the Baskervilles muzzle. I conditioned it over a week's time before ever even trying to clip it on. Twice a day for a week, smear with liverwurst or cream cheese, get him to stick his head in it to get a treat, etc. I never make my Dobes feel bad about wearing one either - such handsome dudes! Joel does have a video on conditioning the muzzle too. Try not to allow them to take it off. It may take longer since the dog now knows he can get it off. I would distract when he tries to fight it, like jolly him up - Oh my goodness, let's go over here and sniff this or check this scenery out, etc. You might also be successful with scatter feeding which allows a Beagle to use their nose, provided he's not a resource guarder. Hope that helps.

Context: I bought my dog off a woman who got him from a puppy mill. When I Googled the breeder on his paperwork, I found horror stories about the breeder and her sons basically castrating puppies without anasthesia (and they are still in business and selling dogs online!!!).
I have no idea when my guy was neutered, but it was already done by the time I got him at 5 months old. And I'm wondering if some of the persistent anxiety I'm seeing in him is due not just to a lack of socialization, but also the careless/premature neutering...

Do you think that there is an age limit to wear reactive dogs can meet, play with other dogs? I have a rescued Rottweiler now almost 5 years old. I can walk him to where as long as no dog barks at him, he will walk by no problem. But he just can not ignore barking dogs even if they are not barking at him.
I live in Germany or I would have been to see you a long time ago. I just can't find anyone in my area who works as you do. It is so frustrating.

Can you please give me some advice on my 4yr old female staffy. She's normally a golden dog, I can walk with her off the leash and she will see other dogs/cats and will not react. However when she's on the leash it's a different story, she walks by my side on the leash very well but when she sees another dog/cat she pulls and shows aggression. When I see enother dog I don't react, I don't tighten the leash, I just simply watch her and wait to see if she reacts. I correct her everytime by saying "HEY" tap her bottom and get her to sit for a little. I'm very Persistent and I'm incredibly determined to get her to be better and to stop this aggression on the lead. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong and why she only seems to show aggression on the lead.
We have a male dog and he is a french bulldog. he doesn’t like male dogs at all but some he likes. we can’t let him off lead because he doesn’t listen to recall. and he freezes at other dogs

Are there any videos on reactive dogs in truck while driving. I would love to learn how to stop that, I have 2 german shepards that I have to take with me at the same time sometimes, and it's rough, they bark and react to other drivers in cars. It's way worse when they are together.
I have a labradane that I just adopted i was told she lived with another dog and the other dog began to start fights and so this dog learned aggression but she's very gentle with submissive/friendly dogs & cats/kittens. It's just she's very reactive to dominant dogs i was told that she is very protective and will do what has to be done to protect her "person"... she doesn't like men... im trying to do exposure therapy by walking in public with a muzzle is this the wrong approach? She seems to be peaceful when I'm next to her but with men she loses the ability to hear me. And with most dogs (with the exception of a few) she snarls If they get within her walking sphere. I've corrected it everytime it happens and when I can get her attention she kind of stops but you can tell she's stressed because she pants and her eyes get stressed
Do u have any videos or advice on a rescue hoarded dog? She in not aggressive toward people or dogs or cats..just the opposite she freezes in fear. She has no confidence. Jumps and bolts at any noise..or sometimes at nothing. She seems to want to be near me after a month but still stays just out of reach. I can get to her and pet her but only on very slow careful approach..and she doesn't seem to want me there. But again seems to look at me wanting affection..she just never learned how. She does check in with me but I can get her to listen. Basic Training commands are hard because she is not food or play/attention driven . Help😭
I'f my dog gets reactive towards putting on his gentle lead like jumping and nipping what's a good way to get rid of that behavior he hates getting his leash on
Hey Joel, my 14mo Harrier is super socialised and plays with plenty of other dogs at dog parks etc. I’ve noticed she’s started growling a little bit while playing, she’s still playing the same, but do I need to be concerned with the growling 🤔
Play growl, your dog is having a good time for sure!
Some dogs are more vocal when they play. This sounds like a play growl.
@@blueflare3848 now that she’s 17-18 months she doesn’t even want to play with other dogs anymore 🤦🏾♂️ She prefers chasing balls etc now 🤷🏽♂️ that growling thing was very off putting to other dog owners though, that was the problem 👍🏾
