Well, my PI is at my sisters house (about 300 miles away) and I'll get it next time she visits. She managed to get one for about $10 but it was sent to her house! I've got a 7inch HDMI display ordered for it and I am currently putting together a uBitX that I plan to interface to the PI. But, I may consider VNC from my desktop computer! Really glad that you are still able to keep the TH-cam channel going!!!

Hi, I also connected IC-7300 to RAspbrry Pi 3 B+ (RPi), which is my main computer. I connected to 24" LCD TV via HDMI, and configured Bluetooth keyboard and "Magic Trackpad as main input devices. Most of time, I am using command line interface (CLI), to control IC-7300, with rigctl form hamlib v4.0-git. YOu also can record audio from IC-7300 and send to the rig to be TX on the air, using FFMPEG, which is very useful to record important QSOs. :) Great video, and looking forward for next videos. Hi Kevin., I was setting up a Pi4 to work WSJT-X with my Icom IC-9700. Could not find a specific video for that radio, but I came across this one. So I decided to try your way as the two are similar. My first experience with a Pi, I thought this was going to be the typical fight to get going. Had it running in under 5 mins, only difference that it needed DTR instead of CAT to make the PTT work, and my baud rate was 19200. Thank you so much for putting these videos together. Thanks for the informative video. I was able to set up my RasPi-3 with WSJT-X to work with my IC-7300. However, I would like to know what is the purpose of the FLRIG in this conjunction? The WSJT-X controls the transceiver directly and I selected IC-7300 from the Radio list instead FLRIG. WSJT-X is working fine on its own so is there anything I am missing this way?
My comment is a couple of years late, but: flrig and fldigi do have a bidirectional link - I think you need to set the IC-7300 CI-V or USB setting to “echo back” (which outputs back to the external pc).
Thanks for the great video. I found it informative and easy to follow. Your keyboard sounded like a bass drum pounding into my sound board. Maybe move the mic or insulate the case of the camera or tripod with foam. Keep up the good work
This one is over my head a bit because I've never heard of FLDIGI or that other one. What I need is a basic how it gets hooked up with video of it being hooked up and what each hook up does. I'll look around some more and see what I can find.
Could you show how to set it to key CW, other than having it generate the audio tones and transmit as ssb (i've been doing that, would like to see it key as if there was a paddle)
how can you get the audio from the radio to go into the raspberry pi so that the audio transfers to the computer for remote operation, i am already controlling the ic 7300 remotely but i get no audio transfered to the remote computer, please excuse my ignorance i am not a computer or raspberry pi guru
If you're talking about transferring the audio the Pi is getting from the 7300 to another computer that's controlling the Pi, it may be tricky to set up. Search for Pulse Audio Network Audio. I think you might find something there. The Pulse Audio server has the ability to connect to another Pulse Audio server on another computer for moving audio across a network.

In this video, I setup FLrig to talk to the radio and then under rig control in fldigi I selected FLrig. However, if you don't want to use FLrig, in the FLdigi settings under rig control, you can set your radio up using the same serial device information I showed in FLrig.
Really enjoyed the video and have FlRig / FlDigi talking to each other / controlling with VNC. However, for some reason when I initiate FlRig, it automatically keys the TX and sends out a signal on the IC7300 that remains being sent until I turn the radio off. Any thoughts? Thanks, K6KEC

If you go back and look at my update videos I think it was update 4 or 5 where I showed the inside of the power center, that's where the pie is located. It's simply connected with you USB cables.

There's an option in the setup menus for USB keying, I think. With it on, the radio goes into TX as soon as the serial interface (over usb) goes live. Turn that option off.

Here's the thing... when I try to get my IC-7300 going with the Pi (which you'd think would be ez/pz once I was already successful with the 705),... *something is making the 7300 start transmitting! No, not yet. It's stored in my parts in case I need it. I'm actually going to be doing a mod to my existing regulator to bump it's output voltage up by 7/10 of a volt. I'll be doing a video on that trick.
Thanks for the guide, it helped me to get my Pi taking to the IC-7300. I can now operate from the comfort of the house instead of the shed. One problem I seem to be having is that when I set the mode to USB-D on FLrig, it reverts to USB each time WSJT-X transmits. Anybody had a similar issue and know of a solution?

USB audio mode set to data, USB serial mode set to CI-V. There's several other tutorial vids out there already on setting up the radio end, I didn't want to be redundant.
I don't mean to be a pest, but if you're connecting to a RasPi from another linux machine, you could just connect using the Xserver/X Window System protocol, which is theoretically more efficient and flexible (the RPi windows will be native windows on your linux box, instead of running under a desktop window). Just a niggle. Keep up the good work.
You could also use a program called No machine, if I remember right. But VNC is more Universal, people can use it on any platform, and I always try to focus on the tools that hit the broadest audience.
X is pretty terrible over the network compared to VNC, in my experience. So, so slow, even over local Ethernet. VNC I can do even over slower (4G) links.
@@michaelmichael8406 I didn't realize that! I always figured that native X would be far more efficient. It does have the advantage of using remote windows natively, but if VNC is faster, that's a different story. Are you using vanilla free VNC, or one of the enhanced VNCs, like realvnc? In my experience, regular VNC can be pretty slow, even ver gigabit ethernet.
@@RamLaska I can't claim to have done serious benchmarking, but it's been my experience with realvnc and tightvnc vs native X over the network. Perhaps amusingly, I've been at this long enough to remember when X was news, and amazing. ("You mean I can cut & paste text from windows running vi on different *systems*?!")

Please remember that realvnc and tightvnc are considerably different implementations. They're inter-operable, of course, but the RealVNC server has a lot more features and can actually use modern video compression, unlike standard/TightVNC. I'd readily believe that RealVNC can outrun X all day long, I'm not quite so sure about vanilla/tightVNC. Cheers, and good talking to you. 73

I edited as usual on the laptop, and then dumped the video file into the phone's SD card and uploaded through the phone and the TH-cam app. Worked okay.

FLrig is useful on it's own for rig control, or in conjunction with FLdigi, giving a bit more control over the rigs settings.
OK< so i did all this and i'm decoding nothing but nonsense. My antenna (6BTV Vertical) works fine on SSB. Any ideas?

Hooked up? To the radio? Through a USB rig interface like a signalink or my own Duinovox.

There appears a Broadband router that can work on HF or VHF so you can connect to the internet via a special router and a radio transceiver

You have USB keying turned on on the 7300, I think. As soon as the serial lines go high, it's keying.

They will be in the /dev directory. /dev/ttyACM0 or /dev/ttyUSB0. You also need to add your user to the dialout group to access serial ports.

There's a USB keying setting in the 7300 that is probably turned on. It's keying as soon as the serial port goes active.

Back when I built the linear regulator I did measure it's no-load consumption at somewhere around 23ma. So it's already doing pretty well.
