  • Thanks for giving 20 minutes of your worthy time, I hope you will enjoy this process.
    On the Public demand I forged a Damascus Cleaver But the challenging part was stainless steel forging with Carbon steel. I used Rulers for making the Billet and most of the rulers belongs to martensitic Stainless steel family which are rich in carbon content but magnetic also.
    The Core of Cleaver was made of 5160 High carbon steel and the outer layers were ''Rain Drop stainless steel Damascus''.
    I made this Japanese style cleaver for my own use and it is NOT FOR SALE sadly but very soon I am launching my store so, stay connected to enjoy the beautiful stuff.
    The handle was made with Japanese style, using hard wood with hexagons texture.
    The guard was made of 304 grade stainless steel which is very durable against rust attacks and belongs to austenitic family but has low carbon content.

      @@tadaaaa952 1095 may be a fine blade steel, but it wasn't tempered nor was that a proper heat treat. Using plain water makes it brittle. What he used in the video certainly looked like water to me anyway.

    • @user-mz9rd5wg2w
      @user-mz9rd5wg2w 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I hope he tempered off screen. Especially for a chopping knife lol. Points on the creative san mai technique though. May not be traditional based on what I've seen, but effective nonetheless and achieved the same goal.

    • @jeffhicks8428
      @jeffhicks8428 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tadaaaa952 1095 is outdated obsolete high Maintenace low performance for a knife steel. The only half decent thing about it is that it's tough as nails so if and only if you treat it correctly AND grind the blade thinly enough, it can do decent, but still a kitchen knife, even a veg chppoer like this, doesn't a very high standard for toughness. Basically if he did this right, in terms of heat treat and grind, it can be okay, but still rusty and will go blunt at the edge faster than basically any other steel. The good news it's easy to sharpen, very easy, and will likely never experience edge failure or chipping.
      Folks dont understand.. the reason those forging steels are selected isn't because they're the best steels for a knife, it's the totally opposite. They're chosen because they're the easiest for a human to hammer on all day, back when knives were made in such a crude manner. The best steels for a knife literally can not be hammer forged period.

    • @jeffhicks8428
      @jeffhicks8428 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tadaaaa952 Even the most low grade stainless aka chromium steels have a lot more "edge retention" than any carbon steel, and even the low alloy steels like 52100. It's not an opinion, it's a fact. Find me one person in the world that is making knives out of those high alloy/stainless powdered steels you mentioned using the same process you see in the video. It doesn't exist. You're going to burn your puny little forge and power hammer out before you figuratively make a dent, and the end product would be garbage. That's not how this works. Those steels can only be made by a handful of companies and only be forged by a handful of mills in the world. I could make and forge 1095 in my backyard. Knife makers who work with those materials buy them and grind it into a knife. How much better is the end product? Well, it can be a lot better in various quantitative and qualitative ways but for one thing "better" is a preference and also most users don't actually "demand" very much from a knife anyway and thus don't need all that, so it's often just for bragging rights basically.

It's incredible TWENTY MINUTES make this look so simple and easy, but omg the real time and tooling and skill and effort it all took to create this amazing cleaver is sooo awesome, I've run out of praising words! It's refreshing that such trades exist amid the politics and drama of western life. Once again, thank you guys for what you do!!!
