    I'm with you on the shooting board. Mine is basically three pieces of salvaged hardwood ply glued and screwed together. I made it many years go and is used quite regularly for end grain trimming and occasionally for long grain on thin stock. I sometimes wish it was a bit longer.

      Thanks Richard. It's good to hear someone else went for the quick and pragmatic approach. 👍

    Enjoying the blogs Graham, keep up the good work. Nice to see you working in a realistic space rather than something the size of a commercial workshop. 😂

      Hi David! Thanks for checking in. It was tempting to make the space more "video friendly" but it would be a distraction from what I enjoy, and as you mention, less relatable.

    I have a Stanley router plane and my college have the record version. Both suffer the same problem with the blade coming loose, so we recently bought some Veritas ones, I have to say while they feel very well made they still do suffer a bit of the same problem. I very much like the blades as they are easy to sharpen and a nice low angle which slice through the material very well. I recently purchased one of the router planes which you speak of by a quite famous TH-camr which look like an almost identical copy of the Veritas, it is a massive improvement on the Veritas as there is no slipping of the blade. Cost wise it works out cheaper than the Veritas as it comes with the attachments that you pay extra for, mind you I have no use to make grooves with it as I use a plough plane. The router plane is easily as high quality as the veritas and I think it is worth the money. It is a direct copy and looks very much the same save for the improvements.I have always been happy with my Stanley's and don't really see myself buying the premium bench planes but took a punt on the router plane to see what it was like, will it be worth more than I paid for it? I don't really know but I am in no hurry to move it on just yet. Just my honest opinion of the router plane.

      Gary, that's some worthwhile feedback. It's not often we get to hear the experience of skilled people like you.
      Credit to the new router. Those initial impressions sound very promising. I quite like my wooden router because I can stick any iron in from my wooden plough.
      Perhaps Veritas might improve their design. So far so good with mine.

    I inherited some vintage Ashely iles carving gouges from the 80s or 90s.. they are honestly fantastic! I'm just getting into carving and relief work.

      Nice score Jack! There are so many avenues woodworking can take you. I hope the carving proves to be rewarding.

    Tell Peter if he is feeling extra charitable, he can send some tools my way, I promise they will be going to a good home. Lol.
    Man, when it comes to shooting boards, the internet can really over complicate it, like most things I guess, my simple shooting board made of a peice of plywood and mdf has been amazing.
    Cheers myfriend, appreciate the content as always.
    Oh and for me personally I think the sound is fine.

      Thanks! Who knows, Peter is the man. The saw is very nicely prepared, a real credit to his skills.
      Shooting boards can be super simple. After the first basic version we can then decide for ourselves if we need something more specialised.
      Glad the sound was okay 👌

    I have had quensheng planes and found them to perform well my mate had a lie neilsen so we tried them out side by side my mate was so impressed with my plane he went home unhappy. But the choice is yours there is lots to choose from my favourite plane is an infill panel plane sith a ward iron ,

    • @faceedgewoodworking
      @faceedgewoodworking  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a nice plane Peter. A panel plane is not something I have any experience with. I've thought a 51/2 as a cheap substitute?

    Functional is definitely my design approach, I am very lacking in artistic talent and I have no visual imagination so would never be able to come up with anything unique or innovative!
    At best, I can combine elements from other people's designs in to something that meets my needs.

    • @faceedgewoodworking
      @faceedgewoodworking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tim. Nothing wrong with that at all. Being able to draw and execute fine work of original design is rarefied air.
      The good part about this is that you know it. Others think they can design but the results are a car crash.

    Graham my saws are always sharp due to when I was a joiner out on the job we only had handsaw for most of the time plus the saws we bought like all our tools cost a lot of money .if anyone wants to come to me I will teach you how to sharpen saws .

    Microphones. The Boya BY-MM1 is a good mic for less than £20. You could have it pointed at you from your camera/phone or have it on the bench. It’s directional so as long as it’s pointing at your face the audio should be good.

    Sweet. Is it sad I look forward to watching your vlogs when I see a new post from you ? lol!
    I have a question about installing a vice. I just got a real vice(was using a homemade moxon vice I mounted under the bench top), same style as yours, it has a 7 inch wide face. How much larger of a face board can be mounted to it with out ruining the integrity of the clamping pressure? I was hoping to get a few extra inches on each side and one inch above.

    • @faceedgewoodworking
      @faceedgewoodworking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      😂 glad I could be a ray of sunshine for you to look forward to.
      Regarding the vice I wouldn't go too big with extra overhang. 3/4" at the top and and 1" or so each side if great. Much more than that and there is a lot of leverage on the jaws that end up making things worse.

    If your bench is pretty flat u can just prop your work piece up on some timber with a stop block nailed to it and just let the plane ride the bench. Honestly don't see a need for a complicated shooting board unless your a guitar maker (wish I didn't need a big stupid shooting board but alas)

    • @faceedgewoodworking
      @faceedgewoodworking  ปีที่แล้ว

      Broadly I'm with you. I think that's why spending £100 to £170 isn't the best use of my cash. Nor is a complicated build a good use of my time.
      I don't use mine much. It's useful when I do. I never see much mention of them in older books. If they do come up it's for planing thin long grain joints.

    • @elguitarolerno
      @elguitarolerno ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@faceedgewoodworking that's exactly what a guitar maker would use it for. Shooting long, thin edge joints for completely seamless fitting is just so much easier on a long, flat well made shooting board than in a vice. Other than that I wouldn't bother, getting square edges to timbers I find a waste of time for the most part, that can be easily done in the vice
