    Aw, he keeps missing the radios and phones. I know this isn't an exciting game, but there's important clues, and you won't get the whole story if you just beeline it.

      Pokerface You are basically telling me that I played it wrong. As I even say during the show, when surrounded by the mundane why would I do anything buy follow the extraordinary, like a floating glowing orb? Obsessive exploration of every nook and cranny is a habit of gamers today because modern game design dictates that we must, but who is to say that was good game design to begin with?

    • @LnPPersonified
      @LnPPersonified 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** I didn't mean to say you were playing it wrong. I suppose you're right, game design should anticipate a player's path rather than dictate it. I just hate it when you miss stuff I know is there.

    • @farfromsubtle
      @farfromsubtle  9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Pokerface My point is I was giving an honest attempt to do what I felt a person in my character's(?) situation would do. Unlike games where the player must survive enemies or the elements, I did not feel any need to scrounge for supplies or clues for an escape or whatever. I had absolutely no direction. Heck even Stanley Parable has a bit of "Get me outta here!" motivation.

    I always find it funny when a game forces you to walk at a snails pace and even the "run" button really only takes you to normal walking speed, it's like they know how short the game is so they artificially lengthen it. Might pick it up when it's on sale, I mean I actually enjoyed Gone Home.

    If they are going to play a walking sim I would have liked to see what they thought of Gone Home. They might be into the stories and setting a bit more, but it is a pretty polarizing game. Also it takes place in one house so it has less empty spaces.

      Gone home is the pinnacle of its genre, next to stanly parable. Even if you don't like these types of game you will most likely still like gone home

      Crazytaxi01 Can't agree with that. Gone Home was pretty mediocre, even for a game genre meant to have minimal gameplay and more focus on story. When it comes to these types of games, the story is the meat, and Gone Home's meat is boring and way too predictable.

    I'd say, a good book is much more interactive than this. Books require you to construct whole realities with your imagination in tandem with the descriptions given. You fill in the blanks, you interact with by the exchange of elements; the book as the building blocks and your mind as the tools. This game doesn't really give you any of that - you can't interact with the world to construct your own narrative, you don't really exist in it's world, because you, as a player character, don't have any resemblance of a personality, a voice, that which would give you a reason, a presence in the world. You don't seem to interact in this game, you just watch as something unfol... Actually, no, you don't even do that. You watch echoes of something unfolding in the past, but you are not given any human element outside of the voices to navigate your experience through the game.
    Of course, you can say that the game, as the book, also expects you to fill in the blanks, but in this instance, the blanks seem to have already been filled: There is a world that exists/existed before you, you observe it, yet you have no bearing in it whatsoever. There is already a world with characters and visual design in here, the game just won't give it to you. You don't see the characters with whom you are supposed to feel connected with. You have been given the world's building blocks, but some of them seem to have been sucked to the vacuum cleaner, and the developers just don't bother to empty the dustbag because they think that the experience is now somehow more whole. I can appreciate avantgardist and abstract storytelling, but these guys want to have their cake and eat it too - they want to engage us to the characters in an emotional story, but they don't seem to want to feed the imagination and the immersion in any real, visceral way. Sure, the silent protagonist is a trope that can be done well, even in a walking simulator, although with my limited gaming knowledge I can't really name any off the top of my head of that genre.
    That is why I'll make a comparison to a completely different game with a silent protagonist instead, and also, because we have the voice of amazing Merle Dandridge to work as a very flimsy segue; Let's compare this to Half-Life 2. Yes, Half-Life 2 is an FPS rollercoaster ride ride, which at first glance doesn't really have a lot of common with EGTTR. But hold on, because HL2 is a shining example in enviromental storytelling. HL2 presents the key points in it's road movie-ish action narrative, but it also has a vivid backstory, which can only be learnt if you listen to the npc conversations and shift through the settings with some newspaper clippings and pictures from the times past. You can only get the bigger picture of something like the Seven Hour War only by inspecting your surroundings. You, as Gordon Freeman, act as a witness to the current events, but also as a witness of a past that has already unfolded - and that does magic to your investment in the story, and I think that is what some "walking simulators" forget: You need something to connect the past to the present, and that is, actual gameplay and the feeling that your choices make a difference. That choice doesn't need to be about killing. It can be about finding audiologs, finding text logs, experiencing the new events, experiencing the stillness - but it needs to be an experience about something, not just an echo of a past experience.

    I really wish they'd play The Vanishing of Ethan Carter like they planned to. It has a similar setup to this game, but there's a clear goal to pursue, intriguing side puzzles to solve, and a character who can actually walk fast. It's a great game that would fit well on the show.

    I agree with the conclusion that Fraser came to with this game. And I am also not against "walking simulators", they can be done really well as proven by The Stanley Parable and (the beginning of) PT.
    The problem with Chinese Room is that they value being obtuse above all else and never answer the mysteries they set in their story. The pacing is just beyond terrible and as for the game part, you might as well be listening to an audio-book instead. At least then you would get the bits of the story without aimlessly wandering around and hoping that you will accidentally trigger the next line!
    Oh and by the way Fraser and Becky, Dear Esther (Another Chinese Room game) is in fact WORSE than this game, because at least here you have some understanding of what is going on and how it relates to your environment! Dear Esther is basically the same game as this, but instead the lines are random and do not form a coherent story, nor do they in any way relate to the areas around you. So in that regard this game is actually a significant improvement... (and still really, really bad)

    I was sold pretty fast to this game, went to check Steam store if they had it and then discovered it's not even on PC. Ah well, maybe someday it will. I'd very much like to play this.
    I have no problem with Fraser not liking it, these games certainly are not for everyone. I just think it was a bit of a poor taste to jump to the ending and then having a laugh at it.

    I still feel the Chinese Room's best game was Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Lots of their similar tropes they like using a lot, but still has a pretty creepy atmosphere and intriguing story (you can probably guess where it is going, but it still leaves an impact).

    One reason that i personaly find the whole "why is this game and not a movie" wrong, is the exploration part. Here u can even miss a lot of the story by not fully exploring the town, houses etc and u can also do it in any order u like, at your own pace. You can't do that in any other medium.

    For good "walking simulator" game, Stanley Parable, as mentioned few times for the absolutely funny writing. I'm happy you played it when you did. But I can also recommend The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. It has that "aaahh that's why" feeling despite feeling odd and out of place at some points, and actual "stages" and some play-ability. Also it is absolutely stunning. I really like both of these, for different reasons, and it's a pity Vanishing of Ethan Carter passed your radar or you never had the time to give it a try.

  • @kgill147

    The game's concept is intriguing, but its execution seems to be its downfall. As Fraser and Becky said, the visuals, music and voice acting is excellent, but the parts are ultimately greater than the whole and, as the saying goes, the medium is the message. This game is like a minimally interactive book. The bits of people's stories are interesting, at first, but with virtually no way for the player's actions (or inactions) to have consequences, the plot and subplots seem to dissolve and lose any gravity for the player. What is in it for the player, why he or she should feel invested, is the bog question, and, perhaps if this story was used in another medium it could have been better, because the user's expectations would have been different.

    These types of games might not be that fun to play for some people, but at least to me they are entertaining to watch. I was far more intrigued by this (as a viewer) than I was by either Batman, or GTA5, which are fun if you're the one playing but dreadfully boring to watch.
    Although I've got to say this looks far better than that Beyond Eyes game. What I've seen of that really just comes down to walking around aimlessly in repetitive (if pretty) environments and getting stuck on bushes and fences. Here, at least you do get lore and bits and pieces of the story at every corner, rewarding exploration. Yes, the walking speed is dreadfully slow, but it's not a failure at every level as far as I'm concerned, presentation and voice acting are Top notch and the mystery is intriguing enough to get one invested. I get that it's not everyones cup of tea, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad.
    Maybe it would have worked better if they gave your player character some sort of backstory and motivation to find out what happened, though.

    The balls of light flying around make me feel a lot less immersed. It's like the game wants me to feel part of the world, but a the same time it drives me to this magic light, and then these light people show up. I know it's supposed to be part of the plot, but it's distracting. I wish the developers had something more realistic in mind when thinking about guiding the player. Anyway, the game looks gorgeous, voice acting is great and the story seems quite original, just wish it was a bit more interesting and engaging.

    Yeah, this isn't my kind of game. Honestly the most frustrating bit was just the way people who try to defend this game try to defend it. It's fine if people like the game, everyone has different tastes, but with games like these people always get hyper defensive and misrepresent what other people say about it.
    Someone in the chat said multiple times that Fraser told people to distrust reviewers who like it. That's not at all what Fraser said. Fraser said that he'd be curious to see if critics who liked this game condemned other games in the past for padding out gameplay. That's a legitimate question and not at all the same as "distrust reviewers who like this game".
    It's frustrating. I get that the people can just be defensive, but it really comes across as "You don't like this game so your argument must be terrible". It really comes across as just a different version of the whole "you don't get it" responds to arty things. It doesn't matter if people meet your arbitrary requirement of "getting it" or not, art is interpretive and that game bored people. Everyone has different tastes, no person's taste is superior.
    EDIT
    The more and more I watch, the more the person in the chat who will go unnamed just misrepresents everything Fraser said. Fraser says that he isn't sure he can call the Stanley Parable a walking simulator because you don't really explore. Person in chat says multiple times that it is then says "But because it's better paced, or more interesting to you, doesn't make it not a walking simulator". That's not even remotely what Fraser said. Fraser directly said that he isn't sure he'd consider it one because of a lack of exploration, that has nothing to do with interest. Oh but that person's one definition of a subjective game genre is law and everyone else has to listen to their one answer. I've become pissed off, I'll stop adding to this now.

    • @yostoyou
      @yostoyou 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Isaiah Stephens
      I don't think Walking Simulator is a negative description at this point.
      I'd call Stanley Parable that because it really is hard to give it any other label.
      It shares similarities with things we have called walking simulators, so why not?
      But Stanley Parable doesn't suck. It does everything that we should expect from a good walking simulator. Interactive story, entertaining and interesting story with multiple outcomes. It uses the medium to its advantage and doesn't have to claim that it isn't a game, it's something else.
      Also, don't group all of the people "bashing" this game. Ignore idiots, and focus on the people with an actual opinion on the game.
      There are idiotic bashers for any game so hopefully you won't have too much of a problem this time.

      Also, I know for a fact that people do use the label Walking Simulator to describe games as a different genre. It's not negative or positive, just a new kind of genre. Of course, the name probably sucks, but it works.
      I think they even call other games they did like walking simulators in this video (I think, because I'm not trusting my own memory right now, so I might be wrong).

    Biggest problem with this game (to me, the only thing wrong with it) is that because you can't move at anything more than the most glacial pace, you end up getting frustrated and skipping important items and interactive elements. It's the cause of its own undoing.

    Interesting. I have hatched the video, the ending to the game and I found it quite serene and beautiful. A neat little story. I wonder what was the exact moment that made you chuckle, I cant seem to Guess what it was exactly. Could you give a time?

    I feel like these type of games are more about the journey than the ending and they can be a hit or miss for someone depending on the pacing, the mystery, the story and overall the vibe. I can understand how someone might like walking around and puzzle together the story and what happened to this town, but personally this is not my cup of tea.
    I have to say though, @ 1:27:24 Fraser says: "If you find a reviewer who gave this a good review, make sure to monitor he's future reviews". I seriously don't understand this, yeah some people might prefer this over the Last of us or Bioshock because this might be more up their alley. Why would they need to be MONITOR because he or she enjoyed a game that you didn't like and gave it a great score is simply beyond me. People have different kicks, this is not one of mine and having some reviewers love this type of game is fine by me. Let's not be close-minded and being suspicious of people who enjoy this.

      @SakuraAvalon 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      titicou Because he wants to see if this game got a free ride for being different. Hence why he wanted people to monitor the reviewers to see if they gave games like Bioshock and Last of Us negative feedback for things this game does(even though they gave it a positive review)

    Man.. the chat wasn't exactly very.. well.. nice this episode eh? I get that this game isn't for everybody but claiming that it isn't even a game just because they don't personally like it? A bit extreme if you ask me.

      A game that has no failure state of any kind cannot be classified as a game. That's the whole point of a game... to win and lose.

    • @JoaquinStick
      @JoaquinStick 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      kuntay88 Then explain how a game can be classed as such if there's no way to win or lose?

    • @kuntay88
      @kuntay88 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Journey, Heavy Rain and many graphical or text adventure games old and new..
      none of these have a state of winning or losing, just a beginning and an end, not unlike "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture".
      games are and can be so much more than most narrow minded definitions people define it by.

    Before they play Apollo Justice or the Miles Edgeworth Ace Attorney Games, they should use the Phoenix Wright Rhythm Heaven Fever as their preview..l since they used Mystery Skulls Money as the Trials and Tribulations Preview before they played it.
