    Nice video, very cool finds! Two things to point out, one is that star or replacement notes don't have the same serial number as the bill they're replacing, and secondly, a brief explanation for the dates that have a letter after them: the dates on paper currency don't work like coins and aren't changed every year, instead you get a "series" date, and back in the day you would get a letter A-Z for each year after the series started, so 1957 would just be "1957", 1958 would be "1957 A", 1959 would be "1957 B" and so on. So your 1957 A note is actually from 1958!! Cheers, good luck, and happy hunting!!

    Not a gold certificate
    They had a gold seal
    Yellow seal was a North Africa series printed in $1 $5 and$10
    For use by GI's during WW2

    Back in high school I worked at one of the local food joints, one day an older gentleman came in and paid for his food with a 1928 $5, red seal. Wasn't gunna let that slip away, bought it from the register, still have it to this day. Probably not worth much since the bill itself is pretty browned from age, but its still really cool.
    Edit: Just looked at it again from looking at yours, but mine is entirely different, where yours has the big "5" on the left hand side of the note, mine has the red seal there.

    I check my change every time. here in the UK we have plenty of anniversary coins. etc. I've got about 20 quid (that's slang for British pounds) in coins, and it's worth approximately 3-4 times that. no paper though. although if you google engraved 5 pound note for the UK. they're worth 50,000!

    I just came from the coin shop yesterday,funny you would discuss old bills today. My brother worked at a gas station in the 70's and has many gold and silver certificate dollars he collected while working there. I generally dont check my bills. I did see the coin shop had many mint defect coins for sale $6 each or something like that. I ended up buying $100 worth of .999 one oz silver rounds and squares. I save them as investments only. I do have a list of coins that go with my other collections that I need to buy or get to go into my collection. I like to cash in my coins I collect to the bank then go buy more silver. I hate having loose change but still save it in an old cashew glass decanter. I must have well over a $100 in coins in that thing. We used to roll them and use the money to go on trips out west.

  • @cool2443
    @cool2443 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    To my knowledge, I don't believe star notes have the same serial number as the bill they replace. Also, I don't believe that the series number is the age of the bill. I think it's the "series" age. Meaning it could be newer. A series 1950 dollar bill could be printed in 1955. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

    As a cashier at taco bell I found a 1953 blue certificate 5 which my manager took, and I found 2 oldschool 20s from the 60s in perfect conditon but my manager slightly ripped one to see if it was real because our safe wasnt accepting the old 20s. The money I was able to get is a 1950 $10 bill, a 1918 wheat cent and a 1902 Indian head cent. This is from only working one day a week because I have another job

    That 10 is not in fact a gold certificate as gold certificates had yellow seals. That is still just a normal federal reserve note. It's just that the obligation clause present on all federal reserve notes back then just so happened to say "redeemable in gold on demand at the United States treasury, or in gold or lawful money at any federal reserve bank" The obligation clause on gold certificates say "this certificate is a legal tender in the amount thereof in payment of all debts and dues public and private". They removed the gold part of the obligation clause in 1934, and then changed it outright in 1963 where it became the one we know today "this note is legal tender for all debts public and private".

    I'm a new subscriber, and I have really enjoyed the 2-3 videos I have seen on your channel. I plan on going back to watch some of your archived videos. I have a question, and I'm sorry if you covered this already in a past video, but is there a soap or cleansing solution that you would recommend to soak dirty coins in to clean them without rubbing them? Would you be willing to cover this in an upcoming video if you have not done so already? Thanks and keep up the great work. You will be up there with NuggetNoggin and Beau Chigg in a New York minute!

    • @JDsVarietyChannel
      @JDsVarietyChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind words. I can tell you that soaking pennies in olive oil for days/weeks can help remove stubborn dirt naturally, and preserve the coin more. Works for copper/bronze coins. There also a peroxide boil method that is amazing on those types of coins. It's tricky when it comes to nickels and silver. Normally I just rinse them with water to remove loose dirt and pat dry. You can always shine them up with bake soda or many other cleaners, but it will generally decrease the value if it's a rare coin. So I don't recommend it.

      Hi, I was wondering how much that $1 bill with the blue seal is worth? I had one of those for years.
      I also had an indian head coin with the front being silver colored and the back side was copper. Any idea what it could have been? I think it had an eagle on the back and it was probably a penny or a dime, I can't remember. Unfortunately I lost them both in a storage unit three years ago.

    • @Poisson4147
      @Poisson4147 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LuSeal Rooks Wow! You almost never see money that old still in use, but $50 bills don't circulate a lot and sometimes old ones still show up. Most $50 bills from the 1950s aren't worth much more than face value unless they're in really decent shape. OTOH if it doesn't show a lot of wear OR has a little "E" next to the date, it could be worth as much as $75 or $80 retail. A dealer would offer less, of course.
      Most bills didn't have "In God We Trust" on the back until the early 1960s, so an older bill without it is normal. As far as the border is concerned, standards for cutting paper bills were pretty lax back then. If the whole image shows and isn't cut off on one edge, unfortunately it doesn't add any extra value.

    The bill that was printed crooked wasn't printed crooked. Serial numbered bills above 96000000 were printed in sheets of 32 bills and were sold that way to collectors. Evidently someone cut the sheet by hand and probably cut it crooked on purpose to sell it for more than face value. I've seen this done before. All sheets of currency that are printed and sold as sheets are the high serial numbers of 96000000 and above. These sheets were intended for collectors and sold as sheets by the US mint. You can look it up online. I have quite a few sheets myself and all serial numbers are high. Keep up the videos and HH.

      Jddubber I am surprised we havent gone to plastic bills also. The process of making dollars out of rag cloth is going up to the point its going to cost more to make the dollar than what the dollar is worth. That is the case of pennys,yet they still make them,and out of a garbage metal,much like the romans did just before the fall. It was so bad,soldiers would defect because no one would honor the coins that the rulers face was printed on. They tried hiring german conscripts but eventually many joined the other side because the pay was better. Thus Rome was open for invasion from mogals and other marauding armies.

      USA is no longer on a Gold Standard ... not even on a Petrol~Standard.
      USA is now on a Iraqi Resource Standard. What? Yeah imagine that. Look it up. Find out for your self.

    JD are there any particular years of the paper money to look for? What's the year that's considered "old"?

    I believe the $1 note with a serial number that starts with 999 came from a full sheet and was cut to make a fake error note.

    I'd like to point out that people can buy sheets of uncut dollars or 2 dollar bills and can cut it themselves. Is there a way to know if it was cut by the govt or by a citizen?

    This happened to me in the year 2013 I went to a chase bank and I was looking for old bills money and the bank teller told me we have 2x 1934 $500 dollar bills someone gave it up and I told the bank teller I will take the $500 dollar bills so I gave a $1,000 in $100 dollar bills and I got 2x $500 dollar bills and conditions is extremely fine about uncirculated brand new crisp so I went to a coin shop and I sold them each $500 dollar bill for $800 dollars each so in total $1,600 I got but I really miss the $500 dollar bills so much!

      Not unless they were star notes. There's so many UNC $1 bills out there. People can buy sealed packs of 100 sequential bills quite easily.

    those miscut errors are typically worthless with newer years as you can miscut an uncut sheet yourself

  • @alberthanson1971
    @alberthanson1971 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The one dollar bill which you said is diagonally miscut is not an error. The dollar bills with serial numbers beginning with 999 come from uncut sheets. There's unethical people who miscut these sheets to dupe people into paying big bucks for worthless curiosities.
    And, the bill you claim is a gold certificate is not. A Gold Certificate will say 'Gold Certificate' where your note has 'Federal Reserve Note'. When this bill was placed into circulation the US was still on the gold standard and exchangeable for gold coins until 1933. Then the US went off the gold standard and it became illegal to own gold coins unless they had collector value.
