  • All about nerves, how they happen, and what to do to deal with them. This is actually a pretty complex topic and there's still a lot we might find out in the next few years!
    By the way, I didn't say it in the video, but remember to take a deep breath! That also might help a lot :)

    As a 1900 chess player i had a winning position with only 3 min vs a 2300 elo in a tournament.
    I had been studyoing seriusly for the first time and i won a 3 point advantage and i was in a position where i just had 1 way to fuck up and i felt that but as i was getting anxious and with 5 min on the clock i started to panick so i consciously spent 1 min to calm down.
    Thoughout the game i felt slowly going out of the flow state as my position improved and my time went down (mainly bcause of the time) but right now i was with 4 min and a middle game position with queen + 1 past pawn vs bishop and rook.
    I managed to get my king in the pawn structure that could be check-mated without realising and then fked up not defending of it because i had to move (5 sec clock)
    That day is the day i learned that i had to learn how to calm myselve down. Now when im on a winned position i play them over and over again and on tournaments i slap (literally slap myself) to calm down xd

    • @eloaba57
      @eloaba57 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Also, i don't just slap myselve but i felt that at this point if i try to make some excercice to calm down it just doesn't work so i do the slap THEN calm down its like for making It feel like something is forcing me to stay calm

    Reframing also helps. I tend to shake incredibly much, yet I have a skill I call "shake control". That is, being able to hit stuff, despite crazy shakes. Everytime I now start shaking uncontrollably, I make it a challenge, to hit stuff despite the shakes, kinda reframing the goal. And ironically, that makes me less concerned about them (they become a challenge instead of a negative feedback loop). I hope that makes sense.

    This is a really great video. So my takeaway is that I just have to convince myself that I have the ability to hit that difficulty because I have practiced it enough times. In short, it is about confidence. And when you know there's an aspect in the map that is difficult for you or outside factors, such as having a different setup that you aren't used to, just don't think that you cannot do it with your current ability. An example of this is mrekk performing great despite having a different setup from what he's used to; I think the clip was from the round table shi. This is a really simple concept, but because it is, we have neglected such an easy fix for nerves. This comment of mine has probably butchered the lesson from the video, but the video has expanded more on nerves and provided scientific evidence and jargon. TYSM bro for this knowledge. Have a beautiful day! *proceeds to break out of 6 digits*

    Great video. Imo nerves are the fun part of the game. I dont really have much fun if there isnt something potentially cool happening. Idke put it best I think, "To stop having nerves you must genuinely not care". The downside is of course, if you dont care, its not as much fun as if you do care.

    I'm not even an osu player, but watching the first part of the video made me realize something
    I haven't played Ultrakill in months, but I want to derust, and I've gotten to the point where the only thing that I haven't done yet is perfect the hardest level. I know I can do it, I've done it before, and on my very first attempt I almost did, but once I mess up once I can't recover. And I realized that was due to nerves, but not only nerves.
    When I'm saying how stupid I am or thinking about how tough this level is, I also pay less attention to the gameplay itself, and I can't multitask at all.
    So here's what worked for me: SHUT UP. If you simply stopped speaking you would automatically be paying more attention to the game, additionally, try to suppress your thoughts whenever you have them. And finally disable all notifications and make sure you can't see new messages on your second monitor or something like that.
    Also, the theory on performance rising with stress until it drops off instantly might explain why I can't perform well for long periods of time, and I haven't even considered stress to be a variable!
    Overall, great video, made me consider what I hadn't before

    What helped me somewhat control my nerves better is playing 1v1 osu tournaments. You are constantly under pressure and need to perform on a higher level than your opponent. Playing in this kind of scenario gets your brain used to this kind of pressure and makes you slowly but surely improve at pressure situations.

    Usually when I miss a note that would keep me from getting a score I end up playing the map better than I normally would. I think that has something to do with all my nerves being gone and I'm just playing the map for the fun of it

    My nerves is so bad to the point when i'm going for FC i looks like i'm having a seizure, my entire body is shaking so much that i can barely sit on my chair, not even talking about keeping my hands under control, i have a 5x3cm area on my tablet for osu and my cursor is shaking literally through the half of the monitor, how tf i'm supposed to FC maps with this? if not these nerves i would play as Azer, but thanks to them i can barely FC 4-5* with such a big effort and pain and it also can take a damn YEARS to FC just one damn map (recently i finally FC'ed a map, which i choked 3 years and 4 months ago!!!!). I'm just mentally suffering and hate this universe for giving to me this "gift", it's unfair, i have a great skills but they're being multiplied by zero because of my nerves. I literally CAN'T achieve my goals, i can't be pro, i'm doomed to be a mediocrity and loser

    Very interesting video! I have one question though; I have something called hyperthyroidism, it means i produce an increased amount of adrenaline. Do you think something like that makes the flow state harder to achieve? I have obviously been in the state alot but i always seem to snap out of it at a certain point in extreme nervousness

    • @flyinosu
      @flyinosu  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's an interesting question! I just did a little research and I couldn't find any answers about it there at all. I would expect (this is my theory not fact) that the flow state itself is probably not harder to reach due to you still having an optimal and personal "zone", regardless of how much adrenaline you naturally produce. I do wonder if the effects of nervousness are increased and/or prolonged for you though.

      @@flyinosu It's like this; For others, nerves is a nuisance, but can be worked through to an extent. However when nerves set in for me, its so extreme that it's basically a death sentence. That also adds to overthinking and whatnot. Not to say it's impossible to get lucky atleast, but i'd say the game changing, wall climbing moment where you truly push your limits are very often ruined for me, so improvement has gone slower i'd say.
