Just a heads up that I was wrong about a detail in this video. The method works great but I stated in the video that it works on every version of Windows and I don't think that's the case.
There were lots of comments from people who it didn't work for. After talking to those people it turns out the old method still works. The old method is simply disabling secure boot.
It looks like if your using 22H2 this method works but if your using 21H2 this method doesn't work but simply disabling secureboot does.
Hopefully this didn't cause anyone issues. If it did, I'm sorry.

Thank you for this. I work in IT so naturally I'm on the hook for the family's tech questions. My little sister needed a laptop for school so my parents asked me for a recommendation. I was not aware that the laptop I recommended was using S-Mode so I spent about an hour Christmas morning trying to get it out of S-Mode, but none of the online guides I found worked, so this is a great tip. Thanks.

At first it didn't work for the 22H2, then I disabled the secureboot and still nothing, but then I redid the steps for 22H2 and it worked like a charm. So having the secureboot off did make a diference, because before that there was no 1 that could be changed to 0, because it already was 0. Thank you so much for this video. I personally am still sticking to Win10 for my own reasons, but this definitely showed me not to install it ever. To be honest not just this, but also the whole setting up part and other things. Keep it up! It's a very lucrative field for people with the patience to learn it. And starting young you'll have plenty of time to advance your career. What's more you really don't need to go to college either. Work experience trumps everything else. If you start out working the servicedesk for a few years it'll give you the experience you need to sell yourself and your skills.
I went to community college, majored in Computer Science, but never finished my degree. Now I've got student loan debt and I haven't even needed a degree to work in IT. Don't get me wrong, college is a good route for some careers. Or if you want to get a formal education for personal edification. I think there is still a real value there. But way too many people take on student debt just to have a piece of paper in an oversaturated field that doesn't get them a great job. In IT there are a few places where a degree will help you move up. But I wouldn't say it's required. Most places are looking for experience above all.
A few things that can help you land a great job, put your relevant hobbies and projects on your resume/CV. Not just random hobbies, but if you wrote a program, if you did a cool tech related project, if you coded an app, put that on your resume! If it's something that could be translated into your work in the IT workplace, put it on the resume. Then once you've got the number of years experience to back you up, no one will be asking about your college degree.

9:59 A better way to do this would be with Applocker, which is a application restriction feature in Windows Enterprise, LTSC and i think Education.
It used to be in the Pro versions of Windows 10, but Microsoft removed it at some point.
It's actually really powerful and thorough, wish they kept it on Pro since it's not just useful for only organizations...
However, i heard on newer builds of Windows 10 and 11 Pro, they brought back Applocker, which you can control through gpedit.
However, be careful how you configure it, you can basically lock yourself out of using basic programs of Windows properly if you configure it incorrectly.

This mode with that information, turns these "laptops" (with S-mode enabled) into an Edgebook, the Windows cousin to the Chromebook. Just the fact that Edge is now a Chomium fork like Google Chrome itself makes this even more true with that mode turned on.
My theory is, if these particular "cheap" Edgebooks were supposed to be sold to educational institutions (Elementary/Primary, Middle/Jr High, and High School, not including tertiary education because you can just bring the laptop from home [unless the student or their parents bought one of these Edgebooks thinking it could install external apps], to school) in bulk as a competing option to a Chromebook. I point out those three levels of school because those are the ones I think are the most restrictive in terms of how students should be using them. If a college student were to use one, pandemonium would ensue.

FOR ANYONE NEW: You'll also need to disable Secure Boot in the UEFI settings after changing the registry key in order for this method to work now.
You can access the UEFI settings from the Recovery Troubleshoot Menu shown in the video. After doing this, restart into Windows 11 and confirm that S Mode is indeed disabled. Then, go back to the UEFI settings and activate Secure Boot again. Restart into Windows 11 and you should still have S Mode disabled. :)

So much more can be said... but I'll stop here. @@Jenny_Digital Hogwash, really? I don't consider a fully functioning browser the bare minimum requirement for an OS to be useable.
Small list of software I use which (I think) doesn't exist on Linux:
      Foobar2000
      Exact Audio Copy
      iZotope RX8
BES CPU limiter (really important sometimes)
      Speedfan
      Directshow(?)
      Everything search
...and you might laugh, but Microsoft Office Picture Manager, which is still the easiest way to manipulate images (precisely crop, rotate, adjust change contrast, etc)
And that's just if we're being generous, if we're not being generous, let's also include:
Photoshop (which GIMP is really not an alternative to, I know because I use both)
A bunch of games from the 2003-2013 era (not through Steam, because I actually like to own my games)
...And there's probably a few more things in that list, just because you don't use something *every day* doesn't mean it's not useful to have.
Sure, some of those can be resolved with Wine, but seriously - I've used Wine before (I also have a Mac) and it's not a perfect solution in the slightest. For all the other ones, it would be accepting losing a bunch of stuff you like and are used to, and settling with alternatives that can carry out the same tasks.
Sorry for the rant, but sure, if someone barely does anything specialised, they should be fine on Linux, or someone that's just getting into computing, and doesn't have a bunch of workflows, preferences, habits, and preferred software. But for someone that's used Windows for 10+ years, sorry dude, it might be to late for me.

@@andreivaughn1468 I’m sorry you feel this way, but I really do use my computers for genuine serious stuff and get on fine. I suspect you may have struggled to learn a different workflow and said ‘too hard, don’t bother’ but really, any change of scenery will have some of that effect.
I walked away from Microsoft Windows after the W10 betrayal and sure I had to learn some new stuff but now I could hardly remember a better move.
Oh and I’m just guessing here, but aren’t you maybe an artist of some kind who might be better off on Mac? I say this because the computer you choose is definitely determined by what you do with it and I _code_.

After trying many ways none of them take me out of S mode. This is the first time I can't disable S mode.
Your method worked great with windows 11 23H2. Thanks!

Hi. When I. Get to the sky policy required setting my number is already at 0. Can you help on what I should do. Should I just make that a 1. To get out of a mode. ?

95% of the comments: Windows spied on me, now I use Linux... 🤔For some reason I suspect that many of them forgot to say: *and I continue using my Fakebook, Intascam and all other Metacrap products because I really value my privacy and anonymity on the Internet* 🤣

I was going to go through all this to get my new windows 11 home S mode (S meaning "Are you SERIOUS microsoft" or "STUPID". I was getting a "something happened that we coultn't switch" messages. However after logging off my user account and restarting the laptop, it finally switched. So all this dangerous registry stuff may not be necessary. (All this said, the OP did an excellent job of explaining the steps)

I had a customer last week calling us, because he couldn't install some 3. parts software on his brand new Lenovo Windows 11 laptop. It was not even a cheap computer, around $1000 and yet it came with Windows 11 Home S, and the salesman didn't even tell to our customer. Why the F* do a laptop with a pricetag like that still come with S-Mode!"

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's unusual. Typically S Mode comes on the sub $400 systems that have hardware specks that I typically wouldn't even run Windows 10 on.

The short answer is: don’t buy the cheapest PC because you get what you pay for!
The long answer: setting up your PC for yourself is as easy as starting a new mobile phone or tablet for the first time. If you can’t do that, then you probably can’t use the PC anyway.
You also need an Apple/Google account for mobile phone/tablet else you can’t download apps. So they all does the same thing, it’s not just Microsoft.

You don't need a Google account to download and install apps on Android you can easily download them from somewhere else and install them after enabling a setting in settings

and theyre the reason why S mode was created in the first place

Yep it's true, just re-bought my old-ass phone which runs android 4.4.2, google services are broken as hell on it, and so is the Google Play Store - got all my old 3rd party apps back by just downloading the apks and installing them. So no, they don't all "do the same thing".

Hey I can't believe I did it! I feel really smart! Well done video. Windows S mode really makes me feel like repeatedly hitting someone with a baseball bat when I discover all the data they extracted is now stuck to the little tool bar in microsoft, even after wiping my computer clean it's there for life.

Thank you so much. I bought some basic HP laptops to be used at random by different employees for presentations. These are just used and stored - not any person's personal system - just internet and presentation. I could not get S mode off even with a MS account. Now I have office and chrome working.
