I think it is necessary to understand that in Persian sufi poetry, the word "lover" [`âshiq] means being a lover of God. And in the paths of sufism that view the mystic seeker as the lover and God as the Beloved, it means a true dervish. Therefore, "the lovers" are the lovers of God. So in this sense Mevlana and Shams the two men in the poem certainly were "(spiritual) lovers."
Is this a limitation due to translation? In English and Spanish when two individuals are addressed as lovers it is always between themselves. There is the concept of being a lover of a god, love or something abstract but for those instances the author has to specify that they are lover of X (what ever it might be) so there is no ambiguity. Otherwise, without escape, it means lovers between those mentioned.
Really pulling for these guys, gals and non-binary pals when they can get back in business post-COVID. Not big on clubbing myself but these parties look legit fun and I'm really happy to see people finding joy in just being with others who know where they're coming from and dancing the night away.
