Sir Edward Elgar : Mina. John Atkinson Grimshaw : Paintings.

  • The "Mina" of the title of this piece was a cairn terrier, one of the dogs that became the focus of Elgar's life after the death of his wife Alice. The piece itself is quite charming and is played here by the Northern Sinfonia of England, conducted by Richard Hickox.
    The paintings are by the English artist John Atkinson Grimshaw, the "Painter of Moonlight".

    I visualize EE strolling around his lovely garden with doggie Mina at his side, he is thinking of past times, his departed wife, his muses, when suddenly Mina would scamper off and break EEs train of thought. Gorgeous . I am a great fan of Grimshaw.

    A very great master of twilight and moonlight... John Atkinson Grimshaw. A pennyless railway clerk he would paint at dark after work for pleasure... He started to sell his pictures... A least four of the pictures shown here have a large house seen by darkness at distance..
    .. John Atkinson Grimshaw bought himself a lovely huge mansion with the money from his painting. Well done John!

    i find it so sad yet beautiful. Although the light melodies are scattered throughout there is something so melancholic about this. This is just my interpretation but i believe the contrasting minor chords are used to maybe depict how despite all the joy his dog brought to him, his wife's death brought a filter of sadness to even the purest friendship between man and dog. Its so lighthearted yet the deep reliance and love he has for his pets is something many people can identify with if you have lost someone close to you.

    • @davidharris2844
      @davidharris2844  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thank you for your thoughtful comment (and the phrase "filter of sadness", which I find quite beautiful). I too have always found this a reflective piece, a looking back at something that has been lost. It was actually written twelve years after his wife's death, but some aches fade but little.

I can't but imagine a cute romantic scene in the 19th century, where two charming persons meet each other in a magic, stunning summer night and then each go their way, in light steps, with a silly smile on their faces while looking at the stars, thinking of each other as people madly in love do...

    “Mina” is a sweetly pretty piece, and you’ve presented an extraordinary collection of paintings to accompany it. Grimshaw clearly spent a lot of time painting studies featuring tenuous light, wet pavement, mist, and tall, bare wooden objects. The seventh painting, where the road crests in a glory of gold is especially striking, I think. It’s now now tied with my initial favorite of his paintings. I feel indebted to you, David, for re-posting this video sooner, rather than later. The search is on..

      Grimshaw did paint some very evocative paintings. I have a print of one of his "maiden loitering in lonely contemplation under moonlight" efforts which I never tire of looking at.
      I've just reread The Deserted House for the first time since my schooldays and only now realised that it's a metaphor for death. Better late than never, if you'll forgive the pun.

    Mina is a dear creature loved, that can only remind one of the other, even dearer, love. I hear this sadness of the dear one gone. That final extended note is a kind of finality. It's the last dear one... there won't be another... Our own Terrier was killed by a deer and my wife and I separated, I know that they were the last ones... I don't know how old Elgar was at this time, perhaps I'm projecting my own reality... but it sounds exactly how I feel... given my age...

    I know the piece was written "about" a dog, but I think it was used wonderfully as the theme to the BBC's David Copperfield in 1974. Evocative of that Novel's themes of the varied forms of love and the passing of time, albeit written in different eras.
