I just took my bricked Xperia Play out of the closed today and installed original 2.3.3 ginger bread ROM and it came back to life, all the preinstalled games, like Brecue Lee, Sims, Fifa still downloadable same with Crash Bandicoot. Have also some APK of early GTA 3 and GTA vice city Android version, time for memory lane revisit :)
Yes it can, I do have myself one apk 1.3 version () and it works fine, though performance is not really so great, lucky you can reduce resolution in settings but it would be mostly ps2 level performance around 30fps
I used this as my daily driver for YEARS, basically until it broke down and I couldn't find anyone who could fix it. I mostly played emulators on it, I used stand alone emulators for most things and it worked really well with apps I got from the app store. I would LOVE it if a new phone with proper gaming controls came out. I really don't like the whole fold out, lock onto the side thing. It's just not as convenient.
So, it's been a few years since my Xperia Play has been working but I seem to recall that if a game allowed you to map buttons, you could use the Play's controls. As they were just android buttons...and most games greatly benefited from having actual controls in my opinion.
From what I remember reading, it seemed as if there were some compatibility issues around launch, but a ton of games eventually adopted the input support. But, yeah, for the games I've tried that make sense to play with a controller, the physical controls are definitely preferred.
Hello there, first of all great informative video 👌🏽 I just picked up an Xperia play after looking for one for years. Would you be able to provide me with the process for downloading the original crash bandicoot files as well as how to run ps1 games through the native Xperia play app ?
Unfortunately, I can't link to the Crash files directly (since that'd be like sharing ROMs). However, for the general process, check out the final link in the video description to the collection of articles referenced in this video. The PSXperia folder in that collection should give you the info you're looking for.
I remember so much vitriol from gamers targeted at the psp-go because it didn't play psp discs and had such small capacity with expensive memory. that probably further pushed gamers from giving the xperia play a chance at all. i remember thinking the psp-go was such a downgrade from the psp despite being smaller. of course, hindsight is 20/20 and the only psp i own now is the psp go, because i don't really enjoy collecting disc-based games and i enjoy the premium handfeel so much.
I did actually own one back then. Loved its size. The biggest issue with the Xperia Play was the performance The processor was SLOW, the memory and storage simply wasnt enough. It was really slow compared to other Xperia phones. Also it hadnt been out for that long before android updates for it was discontinued
It was called the PlayStation phone first then Sony didn't want Ericson to use that name because they believed it would compete with the PSP market but they had already certified it so .... They called it the Xperia play "PlayStation certified" 😅😅
@@Stylez-13what’s funnier is there’s actually 2 PlayStation certification jars. And 3 ways certification is checked that are only relevant in specific situations, and are only going to work on different sets of devices 😂
If the Xperia Play is a failed product back then, it wouldn’t be a success today. Baking a new OS would also be a problem, since using Android would just not be profitable at all. What’s surprising is how the PlayStation Portal isn’t a smartphone. It was a Remote Play device only, making it a smartphone would work the best.
I don't think a modern gaming phone would be popular, because there are so many of those controller attachments you could buy, negating any need for the controls to be built-in phones.
Nope it would failed today because apple and google rather have no 3rd party stores on their platform and their just gonna block them from being accessed on web browsers or internet
@@omarguerrero6417 I can run the Google Play Store and the Amazon app store without hindrance. Apple I believe Google to a lesser extent but that being said, I can still run multiple stores on the same platform from what I've experienced and seen. Whether you can and whether the Googles and Apples of the world want you to would seem to be two different propositions.
@@sircrab6962 that's weird because it comes with a case that I can toss into my backpack. Crazy they would do something like that to make a portable. Insert sarcasm here.
Fun Fact: When Minecraft: Bedrock Edition was launched in 2011 it was initially exclusive to the Xperia Play.
If it was a good phone it wouldve sold like gangbusters with good advertising. The game pad needed work too.

Because no one still knows what "PlayStation Certified" means

No

A phone with a game sir X2 is not good compared to a phone with an integrated joystick.
It's not as portable.
