La Tour Eiffel - Paris

The Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris and more generally of France. It was built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World’s Fair. Today it is one of the most visited monuments in the world, it attracts millions of tourists annually. However, the Tower was NOT always beloved. Initially, many Parisians viewed its construction with skepticism and disdain. Many prominent Parisians and artists decried what they saw as a monstrous intrusion on the Paris skyline. Names like Charles Gounod, Guy de Maupassant, and Alexandre Dumas were among the signatories of a petition denouncing the tower as a "useless and monstrous Tower", a "gigantic black smokestack" that would overpower Paris’s famed landmarks like Notre Dame, the Louvre, and the Arc de Triomphe.
When it was erected for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, it was intended as a temporary fixture, not a permanent symbol of Parisian innovation and culture.
The Eiffel Tower’s journey from an unwelcome industrial behemoth to a beloved architectural masterpiece illustrates the potential of visionary projects to alter city landscapes and economies. It stands as a reminder that today’s controversial projects might be tomorrow’s treasured landmarks.
The Eiffel Tower continues to play a central role in Olympic history, serving as a platform for the transmission of sports announcements and talks during the 1924 Paris Games, and hosting several Olympic torch relays, notably during the 2008 Beijing Games.
