True story: many years ago my wife and I were eating at one of the Paris restaurants recommended by his guide book. There was an older couple next to us with Rick Steeves guide book in hand. I joked to my wife that the place must make a healthy living from Steeve's customers and that Rick had probably never set foot in the place. literally 2 minutes later in walks Rick and his entourage.
There's a plethora of more 'hip' travel videos out there on TH-cam full of 20-something year olds that get more views and likes. But I always come back to Rick Steves. There's a certain quality of humility and wonder that I love about him.
A depth of knowledge given with great camera work to support it. I have to laugh remembering my first time in Paris and the guide who marched us quickly through the Louvre. She didn’t really care for les Americans.
Gail Owens Yes but some of these shows are really old and this episode is from 14 almost 15 years ago.. some parts of Paris have changed a lot since then and some of the Subways have become dangerous because of robberies and near abductions. There's other stuff going on there with people from countries that really hate the West
It's a very different Paris now........ It turns out my wife and I (plus a 14 month old son and ~ 4yr old daughter) were fortunate to have taken our 10 day trip of a lifetime to Paris when we did (mid May 1999). It was perfect! No rain, warm, no mosquitoes and it was the Paris of glory and charm one dreams of. We were so lucky. Rick Steves videos were our gift from the gods. We also studied the many guide books. We rented an apartment in the 11th Arrondissement, shopped in neighborhood stores, had jambonne and fromage (inexpensive) on the streets, enjoyed cafe's on the avenues and hidden outdoor restaurants and on and on. We saw much of what was presented in this video. We has one scary experience as we were preparing to get some real French pastry from an local urban patisserie. We were standing in line trying to absorb the culinary nirvana of choices flooding our eyes and brains when..... It was the "Soup Nazi" scene right out of Seinfeld! No asking of questions! State what you want and step to the register! Apparently this was a very popular place with a long line of Parisians wanting their goodies. We were lucky to get out of there alive escaping the dreaded "no croissants for you"! We loved that Paris!!!
Ah yes how dare Paris evolve into something else than the fantasy Americans desire huh? France is a country like any other, not a living paint for tourists to enjoy.
@Piatequila Not comparable sorry as Paris is the freaking capital of France and a busy busy city host of 6 million employees and countless of Fortune 500 companies. It's funny to me how New York's reputation of being fast, loud and brash has been accepted by everyone yet everybody complain about Paris.Double standards much? The truth is that foreigners have an incredibly dated and idealized vision of what France is today
I'm from the United States and I love watching videos like this, it's so amazing and so fascinating to me. I'm studying French right now and I've studied a lot of France, French culture and so much more. Such a breathtakingly beautiful city and country.
It isn't possible to better Paris but Rick just did it . It's not just the buildings and boulevards and gardens which make Paris what it is , it's simply the air .Paris breathes a different type atmosphere ,one which is high on culture and chic style , imitated but not surpassed .It leaves you wistful as if wondering if you could take it along with you .
Yeah and then there are the homeless sleeping on the streets , garbage piled up 6 feet high , dirty smelly of urine streets well hidden from tourists....so that you don't see the Real Paris....smh
I had to watch this after hearing about the horrific fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral. I know Rick Steves would have one of the best, if not the best videos about Notre Dame.
Paris, France 🇫🇷 is such a beautiful and historical place to visit. We had such a blast touring this grand city and will certainly return when it's safe to travel.
Wife and I went to Scotland, Sep 2014, for the Ryder Cup and watch the US get spanded by the Euro team. After 2 weeks there, we flew fro EDI to Paris and stayed at Cote Montmartre for a week. Most marvelous week of my life. We walked for hours, railed to Auvers sur Oise to see Van Gogh's and brother Theo's graves, railed to Rouen to spend day, visited Musee d'Orsay, d'Orangerie, le Louvre, etc. Wonderful!!
We went on a Best of Europe Rick Steves tour starting in Paris with our amazing guides Martin and Roy. They taught us how to be a good, respectful, smart and kind tourist which made the trip the most amazingly fun and brilliant one ever! We all loved Paris very much; kind, friendly people, great food, art and music. On one later trip around Notre Dame we saw 5 great music groups in 2 hours. It was magic and Rick and our guides opened the doors for us. We've been back 3 times. THANK YOU!
This video feels so gentle and nostalgic, no one is on their phone and the people are actually reading paper materials and talking looking at each other. It felt so sweet to my heart!!
Danis Tour’s team is incredible! They helped us customize our itinerary and even arranged a surprise birthday cake during our Seine cruise. A memory for a lifetime!
For those who "travel" thru these videos, seeing in person unmatched. I've seen so many pix of the Versailles Hall if the Mirrors, but when I turned around the corner into it, I fell a shock of an overdose of culture !!! No virtual tour would give you that sense. You hv to visit to understand !!!!!
I always took Paris for granted cuz I would always watch Rick Steves growing up, I thought I would get to see the Notre Dame anytime I wanted. Oh boy was I wrong
I'm planning a trip there next year, can't wait! This must have been made a long time ago, I don't see any cell phones, people are reading their papers in the cafe's, I love that and hope not much has changed
Staring at those architectural masterpieces makes me drool. I was imagining how great those people who made those landmarks standing still up to these days. Truly fascinating. All the details are speaking art. I guess there's not much to do from the people back then because there was no internet and all they do is create wondeful art pieces, paintings, and all of these spectacular architectures. Lovely!❤️🥰🤩
Beautiful video for a beautiful city :) My husband and I just returned from a short stay in Paris and it's such a gorgeous city. Walking through the stunning parks, the view at night over the Seine, the flower markets and of course the Eiffel Tower, so many breathtaking sights. It really is one the most romantic places on earth 🌺🌼🗼🌼🌺 💙❤️
A very informative video. I am in love with this wonderful city. I've been three times and I've gotten to know the main sites quite well. I plan to show a good friend of mine around Paris later this year. I've been planning to take he for years.
Of course, one must always be aware of one’s surroundings, men and women alike, but I’ve travelled to Europe especially London, Paris as well, many times over the past 20 years. I would never let threats of terror stop me from going where I wanted to go. Within reason, obviously. I’ll be back in London and Paris next month and cannot wait.
Awesome presentation, like all the others. Thanks Rick! Thoroughly enjoyed. :) Paris has always been my favourite city. Was there only once, so just reliving those moments again through this video and others, made my day!

Rick , Have you ever been in Paris on July 14 for the Fireworks at the Eiffel tower .??? Every year on the 14 of July there is a Spectacular Fireworks at the Eiffel tower . WOW. !!
Thank you so much rick steve for this vlog.i love to go to paris and experience its beauty but i can't right now.i enjoyed every bit you showed about this beautiful and historical country.
+Shirley Heath I ve been there many times, in August, many many tourists so if you go to Versaille for example, buy your entry ticket on internet Versaille website, if not you may have at least one to two hours waiting line. Same for the Louvre museum. And know that France all museums day off is the Tuesday.
+Shirley Heath Try to eat sometimes in "real" restaurants and not the tourist places that are along every touristic places. For example you have the " Fouquet " on the champ elysee just in front of Louis vitton huge store. That's where many politians, actors, artists eat. And if one day you want to eat Chinese, the best restaurant is "Diep" very close to champ elysee :) Hope you enjoy your trip as i enjoy mine.
Love chinese food. I will try Diep for sure. I looked it up already :-) Staying near Métro Saint Germain. I hope public transport is easy :-) I make notes of everything I wanna do there. Thanks again dear.
+Shirley Heath ig you mean saint germain des pres, its a very nice area. The owner of a loire castle which has the world largest collection of tomato trees variety more than 600 kind, have a store in st germain few minutes away from the subway stations, its Worth visiting there, the second floor of the store is always surprising. Its call le prince jardinier. If you have few minutes, its worthy.
The greatest part of Rick's travel shows is that they aren't just about travel. They touch on history, art, architecture and religion.
Sociological treats!
I think that's what traveling is all about really.
Food aswell!
Without culture what is travel?

Same here!! They just make me feel so much happier/feel like I actually learned about the essence of the place rather than see its best parts

Same here, I trusted Steve since the first video I saw. The "influencers" umm pass Thanks.
And IF you ever want to see Indian tourism, Harish Bali vlogs are the ones to go for.. similar quality.. almost tom hanks like.
I really like Rick Steves' videos. I can travel when I don't have the money to travel! High quality and keeps your interest!

I wish he would remake some of his episodes, but leave these ones as well, of course! :-)

Finally found a best professional and very useful video about Paris before traveling.
Raise your hand if you watched this show for one of your language classes. I did for high school French, and it was arguably the best part
I hope you didn't learn Steve's accent!
